00:00RFK Jr.'s Maha movement just got its own executive at a fast food chain.
00:05Is this the most political a burger joint has ever gotten?
00:08Here's what's happening.
00:09So Steak and Shake just hired a chief Maha officer.
00:13It's a new executive role focused on ingredients and nutrition
00:15named after the Make America Healthy Again movement championed by RFK Jr.
00:20Their alignment with the health secretary is nothing new,
00:23switching to beef tallow as their main fry oil in February 2025,
00:26in line with Maha's movement to eliminate seed oils like canola.
00:31The company said in a post on X this week,
00:33the move marks a major step in the company's efforts to restore the original spirit of American fast food,
00:38food that is simple, real, and delicious.
00:40Now this matters because this isn't the first time politics has seeped into fast food.
00:44Chick-fil-A's ownership drew national controversy over opinions on same-sex marriage in 2012.
00:49But that was a person making a statement.
00:51Steak and Shake put a political movement's name directly in an executive title
00:56and issued a press release about it.
00:58That's a different level of commitment, but the numbers suggest it's working.
01:01Same-store sales surged over 15% last quarter,
01:04leading the industry while most fast food struggled to stay flat.
01:08The company insists this isn't really political,
01:10and that cleaner ingredients and better food are things everyone wants, regardless of party.
01:15But the science is still up for debate.
01:17Nutritionists opposed to the movement say swapping seed oils for saturated fats
01:21doesn't actually improve your health and may make things worse.
01:24Regardless, Steak and Shake might just be making the most openly political hiring decision in fast food history.
01:29And so far, customers are eating it up.
01:31So the big question?
01:33If they're seeing success like this, should more restaurants get political,
01:36or are they riding a wave that's bound to crash?
