00:00We are here with Bear Grylls. I'm so excited to talk to you about the show. I was just saying
00:04I'm loving this season so far and you have a great another great lineup of celebrities coming
00:09on. I'm curious as to how that lineup kind of comes to be. Do they reach out to you? Do
00:15you
00:16kind of have an input in who you want to come on? How does that work? I think the show
00:20has been
00:21lucky in the sense that from the get-go we always had top level people want to do it. You
00:28know we're
00:28now on season nine I look back to when we started you know probably the first ones you know we
00:33had
00:33like the Will Ferrell and you know so many great people from the beginning and you know someone
00:39like Matthew McConaughey is our first episode for this one like he wanted to do a few years ago which
00:44is trying to get diaries to align. But I think something attracts these top tier people to the
00:52show and it I know what it is. It is the wild you know it's the real star of the
00:57show is the outdoors
00:58people want the experience you know they they don't need the money or the fame they're not
01:02there for that they they want to learn some skills they want to go somewhere incredible and also they
01:08want to share sort of their lives and their life journey and the struggles and the battles as much
01:14as a triumphs and it's it's different to a chat show where you know you sit on a couch and
01:20somebody's
01:20telling a funny story for three minutes and I'm promoting a film you know it's different you sit
01:24around a campfire with someone you talk about the real stuff yeah and I think people now know the
01:30show well enough that they are kind of come on it ready to share those things and that's become the
01:36beating heart of Running Wild is that it opens people up and then it lights people up. First one
01:41opens with Matthew McConaughey as you said you guys are on a glacier in Norway now Matthew said you
01:46guys have been talking about doing this for for 20 years how did you guys first meet? I think
01:50someone was when we were living in California at the time and we were doing another show and had
01:55a young family there he just got married to Camilla they had a young family somebody introduced us and
02:02we hung out a little bit but he was he was always great there was always a nice connection and
02:06he
02:06always said I'm definitely gonna do the show I really want to do it and it's you know sometimes
02:11with the guests it takes a few seasons it takes a while and to get it the stars to align
02:16but he was
02:17true to his word and as she ended up bringing his son as well to Norway and after we finished
02:23they
02:23went we sent some of our team and they went off on a little fishing trip and you know it's
02:27so great
02:28to be able to do that you know and I think like I say that's what often the guests like
02:33they want the
02:33whole experience people talk about it that's the other thing it's that Hollywood actually is as you
02:38know it's got a small club I mean I'm definitely not in it I dip in and dip out but
02:43I see it that
02:44they all talk to each other the stories always grow and I love that you know it's like they're
02:49really proud of what they've done and then somebody says you've got to speak to so-and-so they would
02:54love it and then it's sort of just just we've been really lucky you guys were chatting he he told
03:00you
03:00the story of how he came up with the all right all right all right line I drop it and
03:04drive and I
03:04think to myself I got three of my favorite things already all right all right all right
03:11and that was the three affirmations for the three things I did that first three words ever said on
03:17film watching him say that kind of to your face must have kind of felt like watching the Mona Lisa
03:22get
03:22painted I feel like what was that moment like for you well he's such an icon Matthew isn't he and
03:28he's one of these people whatever he says he can make it sound epic and also in terms of storytelling
03:33there's not a better storyteller on the planet and therefore if you're going to go into the
03:38you know backcountry with someone there's no one more fun in that sense and it's all righty all righty
03:44all right I mean he's got there's such to be also so many of those stories and each of them
03:49better in
03:50the light when I saw the final edit it was like oh there's so many we haven't actually we could
03:54have
03:54done about three episodes worth with him but he was great it was cold it was actually a tough journey
04:01and I don't know you see what people are like after a day or so when everyone's cold and tired
04:07and wet you know and you've got to get in another freezing glacial lake and swim across this thing
04:12and he was great he was just tough he always had a smile on his face he said sometimes you
04:17have to
04:17take a deep breath and go all right let's do it here we go but it was a privilege to
04:22journey with him
04:23one of those crazy things that you guys did um what you guys ate you ate reindeer testicles
04:31reindeer gifts huh reindeer gift from the bull perfect what part of the bull I knew he said
04:39I'm bringing a hip flask it was um so I don't even know what it had in it I think
04:42he's got a really
04:43good gin or rum so he bought some of that which is great I said I'll supply the food I
04:49bought some
04:50some reindeer testicles I actually put them at the top of a cliff on our route so you know he
04:56it was a pretty committing climb and he managed to get them and then we carried on our way
05:00cooked them up boiled them up I mean it's not great what do they call them rocky mountain oysters is
05:07that
05:07right that's kind of like the sanitized version of it we had a slightly more raw version of it yeah
05:11um but again he's got such a great way about him and he was all in he'd go bring it
05:17on he said it
05:18wasn't that bad he's like I could take this from a six to an eight with some good seasoning
05:21there you go that's a great line right there
