In the standoff against the Chinese Type 055 destroyers now entering the Gulf of Oman, the U.S. Navy has a secret advantage that renders traditional naval ranges obsolete. Meet the RIM-174 Standard ERAM, better known as the SM-6. This isn’t just a missile; it is a three-in-one ‘Swiss Army Knife’ of naval warfare. While most anti-ship missiles require a direct line of sight from the launching ship, the SM-6 is designed for networked lethality. By linking with an E-2D Hawkeye circling miles away, the USS Frank E. Peterson can fire an SM-6 at a target hidden behind the curvature of the earth. Traveling at speeds exceeding Mach 3.5, the SM-6 can intercept incoming aircraft, drones, and even terminal-phase ballistic missiles. But its most lethal role in the current blockade is its anti-surface mode. It allows U.S. commanders to reach out and touch Chinese warships at ranges over 230 miles, effectively outranging the primary sensors of the PLAN task force.
