00:00we got a lot of good stuff draft two days away we're going to do some lions obviously i think
00:05we're we're developing a team mike team rico discussion it's not an argument but you need to
00:11there's two silos and you got to pick which one of these draft strategies you prefer more we'll get
00:17to that at three uh we are going to discuss with kenny cott kenny losing his temper angrily speaking
00:23with me last night uh and it's red wing related and i i would like to know what this team
00:29could
00:29even do or can they do anything to make you happy or is the presence of the gm just too
00:34much to
00:35overcome we'll do that later i want to start with a piece of audio okay so i was driving this
00:40morning
00:41and jim costa went to war and i i like their topic because i think it's an interesting talking point
00:50i don't like the topic because no matter what you say it will feel like an overreaction from game one
00:57which i'm i'm not doing my feelings on this person have been consistent all year long but i want to
01:06do this but before we do let's get a laugh first of all john crawled under the table wanted no
01:12part of
01:12this smoke and it was jim versus a guy named caller bobby yeah yeah i heard this i was in
01:20my office
01:21listening to this laughing this is good yeah but they were doing a discussion about is jaylen durin a
01:28max player and we're going to get an answer to how expensive durin is when the all nba teams are
01:35released in a couple of weeks for our purposes right now he could be paid a maximum of five at
01:41240
01:4240 million a year for reference cade makes 50 so you would be taking not quite 60 of your salary
01:52cap
01:53and you would have it in cade and durin and the cap is not going up that's already been announced
01:59now if jaylen durin it makes one of the all nba teams it accelerates what he is not entitled to
02:08but what
02:09he could get five at 290 that's a whole different thing right i want to have a discussion about what
02:18you want to do with durin because as a restricted free agent you don't have to do really anything
02:24he could find his market value you could match any offer and then if you don't want him here for
02:32what
02:32you matched you make him a part of a trade and look the risk their teams like the sacramento kings
02:40i mean i i they they maxed out zach levine i mean so i want to play this call though
02:47because
02:48there was a lot of people upset at the very discussion and i don't think anger needs to be a
02:53part of it so i want to play this just for fun this is jim versus a beautiful man named
03:00bobby in
03:01detroit take a listen to this
03:20let's go to bobby
03:25you
03:33you
03:35I have 22 years now, and they're going to talk to you.
03:38If you're talking about the murder,
03:40that's what I'm going to do with that,
03:42because you guys got that back.
03:45You guys need to touch the man.
03:47I don't know.
03:49I don't know.
03:55I don't know.
04:20Okay.
04:25Okay.
04:26So that beef sticks.
04:30I don't know where John went.
04:33Listen, I want to have the discussion with the people,
04:36because I think as we're working our way through this playoff series,
04:40I mean, yeah, there's a lot of money on the line,
04:42but Jalen Dern had a really nice season.
04:44The question is, is he regular season good or playoff good?
04:48And if you're going to max a guy out, what you do in the playoffs matters.
04:52Can you be a championship team with 60% of your salary cap, Cade and Dern?
05:02That's the question that they will have to answer.
05:05And you will have to answer because no one is arguing.
05:08I want to be clear.
05:10You always say this people in the back.
05:13We all like Jalen Dern.
05:15This is not, I don't know where, but we're a bunch of haters.
05:18You know that, right?
05:19No, I just,
05:20I think we've arrived at a point where if you want to have honest conversations
05:23about Detroit athletes, there's a sector of fans that is just, I don't know,
05:28they're incapable or unwilling of doing it.
05:30Yeah.
05:31Jalen Dern is, he is the latest in what I like to call the fan base
05:36and the team are kind of held hostage.
05:39You'll want the guy, but you don't want the guy for the price,
05:42but you don't want to lose the guy, but you know,
05:44it's, you're going to have to overpay for this guy.
05:47So you're kind of in team limbo.
05:49You're being held hostage for a guy who really can't get you over the hump,
05:55but you don't want to be without him because he's a good player.
05:58It's what I call the NBA trap.
06:01This is something I brought up briefly yesterday.
06:03The system is broken.
06:05Brian Windhorst did a really extensive breakdown of this.
06:08And it's the idea of the money's flying in because of the rights deals,
06:13but it's bad for the sport.
06:16Meaning you're telling guys, we're going to pay you more.
06:19You'll play less.
06:20And with the system being what it is,
06:23we're going to have a hundred million dollar basketball player.
06:26Very soon.
06:27A guy like Jalen Dern is do a raise.
06:30There's no arguing, but a guy like Jalen Dern,
06:33who is an old school center.
06:37Can you really max that player out in a new school NBA?
06:41Because what you need to put around him, that's going to be the challenge.
06:48And just, just so you guys understand the average NBA starter, right?
06:52On an AAV standpoint makes about 22 million a year.
06:56So an average starter, that's what they're getting a year.
07:00So when you start to piece your salary cap together,
07:02if I just pay three other average starters, 22 a year,
07:07the Pistons are essentially capped out.
07:10Can you win a championship with K Dern and average?
07:14No, you can't.
07:15So it's an interesting conversation of, I like the player.
07:21And he's only 22.
07:23While you're years away from prime, here's the problem.
07:27You have to project that Jalen Dern at some point is going to take a summer or three
07:34and find a way to be a 35% three point shooter where he can take and make,
07:39you know, two of six every night.
07:42I don't see that.
07:44Right.
07:44But yet I can't get rid of them.
07:47Exactly.
07:48You're in limbo.
07:49You're in a trap.
07:50I don't know what to do because your, your mind says, no, we can't keep him here.
07:58Absolutely not.
07:59Your heart says, yes.
08:01Yeah.
08:02He can get better and he can learn to hit a three and he's the glue to the team
08:07and he's one of the cornerstone pieces.
08:10And yeah, you're right.
08:11There is the trap because if you pay him, there's a good chance you've overpaid for
08:17him and you're not going to get the results back for what you're paying him.
08:21And the first apron is at one 90.
08:24So you, you have to begin thinking about how am I going to procure the true number two for
08:30this team?
08:30If during the, the number three, they can be a championship team.
08:35So I wanted to have the conversation.
08:37I thought Jim did a very nice job with it, but the, the only way you get the two now
08:44under
08:44this scenario is you got to get lucky and draft a two.
08:48That's gotta be a trade Rico.
08:50You have, you would have to liquidate.
08:52If you're going to plant your flag on Duren, what are you gonna do with a Sir Thompson?
08:56We're gonna do a Ron Holland.
08:59Like I think Costa said it best, David.
09:02Bye.
09:02No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
09:05But it's, I want to know from you guys, right?
09:09While we wait for game two is Duren a max player five at 200, or if he makes the all
09:17NBA team and his representatives demand, he be paid the max of five at two 90.
09:25Uh, here's my question to you.
09:30Let's talk about it.
09:31It's no anger.
09:32No one dislikes him, but this is the reality of NBA basketball.
09:37Now where you don't really negotiate in a free market, you're negotiating to these max deal.
09:44Like not every team has a max player, but every team has a max.
09:50You know what I'm saying?
09:51Like there aren't 29, 30, 35, there aren't 40 max guys in this league.
09:57No, I'm just waiting for that one NBA player who says, you know what?
10:00I think I'm gonna buy an NHL team.
10:02I got enough money.
10:03Jalen Duren would make enough money to outweigh the entire wings payroll.
10:08No, that'll be Shea Gilgis Alexander.
10:10When the new extension kicks in, he'll make 70.
10:14Yeah.
10:14Yeah.
10:15I think Wimby will be the first 100.
10:17Yeah.
10:17And that's just timing.
10:18Yeah.
10:19And how the, the CBA keeps expanding, but I think it's a nuanced conversation and you got
10:26to tell me how you feel.
10:27And if you want the guy, it doesn't mean you're wrong or bad, but you will have to answer the
10:33question.
10:33Are you a championship team?
10:35If you're two highest paid players are Caden Duren.
10:39And what is the way forward building around that?
10:42I don't have that answer.
10:44I told you I didn't, I would have stopped at 30 million bucks.
10:48And the problem is Duren went out and had a really good year.
10:50So now you probably got to give him 40 and you better pray.
10:54He doesn't make an all NBA team because if he does him and his representatives, let me
10:59also be clear on this too.
11:00They have every right to demand that money.
11:03You have to make the choice whether you want to give into the demand.
11:06Two, four, eight, five, three, nine, 97.
11:08I said, we're going to start with that.
11:09Bye.
11:10Bye.
11:11Bye.
11:11Bye.
