00:00This is a really sad story, because a 15-year-old boy is dead.
00:05Mike Krzyzewski, the legendary coach at Duke, his grandson got a DWI down in Carolina
00:13and unfortunately hit a 15-year-old kid who's on an e-bike down in Durham, North Carolina,
00:19and the 15-year-old passed away, died.
00:21So obviously send our prayers and thoughts to his family.
00:25But it turns out that when police showed up at the scene of the accident,
00:30Mike Krzyzewski's grandson, 26 years old, was charged with misdemeanor DWI.
00:37That's going to be upgraded now to a felony, a felony death by vehicle,
00:42which I think is a manslaughter charge.
00:44And here's the real problem with it.
00:46The accident happened at 9 o'clock in the evening.
00:49There is a claim that the victim on the e-bike may have accidentally cut in front of Krzyzewski's grandson's
00:57car.
00:58It may have happened.
00:59So it may have been a legitimate accident.
01:01But.
01:01The problem is that when they brought him back to the police precinct,
01:05because they thought he might be impaired,
01:07three and a half hours later, he blew a .11.
01:12The legal limit in Carolina is a .08.
01:15So if you're still over the legal limit, three and a half hours after the accident,
01:21you can imagine how drunk he was at the time of the accident.
01:26Yeah.
01:26So even if the young man who passed away did accidentally ride his bike in front of the car,
01:33that's not a defense.
01:35No.
01:35Because you were driving while impaired.
01:38He's going to prison and should.
01:39Yeah, it's unfortunate.
01:41That's a horrendous story.
01:42And the thing is, I don't want to be a hypocrite.
01:43When I was 26, I flat out will admit there are times where I drove over the legal limit.
01:48I think we all probably did.
01:48But Ubers didn't exist when I was 26.
01:51They didn't exist when you were 26 either, Craig.
01:54And neither one of us had wealthy fathers who said,
01:58I'll pay for your Uber.
01:59I'll pay for your cab.
02:00Don't get in a car if you've been drinking.
02:02Exactly.
02:02And that's where it's no excuse anymore.
02:04So I'm not being a hypocrite.
02:05I'm not saying I'm better than this guy.
02:07Right.
02:07Maybe that very well could have happened to me.
02:09It didn't.
02:10But when you have it in 2026, there's no excuse for drunk driving anymore.
02:16There's no excuse.
02:17You have an Uber.
02:18And to me, the fact that it still happens shows that maybe our entire mentality is messed up.
02:24Like this happens too often where people still drive drunk when they have so many other options available to them.
02:30Yeah.
02:31Look, it's immaturity for sure.
02:33It might be cockiness.
02:34I don't know.
02:35But I know that police will be able to determine with, you know, I guess like toxicologists.
02:40If you're a .11 three and a half hours later, three and a half hours later, what were you three
02:45hours earlier?
02:46It ain't going to be a good number.
02:48And this isn't the kind of thing where you could write a check, you know, which I'm sure the Krzyzewski
02:53family would love to do.
02:54Not when somebody dies.
02:55No.
02:55Someone's dead and you were drunk when you hit them.
02:58Yeah.
02:58So I feel horrendous, obviously, for the family.
03:00And look, you know, the Krzyzewski family, I don't feel as bad for them, obviously, but their grandson's life is
03:08forever altered because of a bad decision.
03:11And it's just a shame that, you know, family got a phone call last night that their 15-year-old
03:15wasn't coming home.
03:17Yeah.
03:17Because somebody on the road was drunk.
03:20So it's one of those things that sadly we deal with every day of the week.
