00:00But we were discussing Chris Sims' latest mock draft
00:03where he has the commanders moving up from 7 to No. 5
00:07to grab their guy, Carnell Tate, before the Giants can get him.
00:12The problem with moving up, just the perception is,
00:16and I'm part of that, is it feels desperate.
00:20It feels desperate when you move up, right?
00:25Or you're just fixated on a guy,
00:27and you want to make sure you land that guy.
00:30What's part of the desperation that you think that you've identified
00:33one guy that you must have?
00:35It doesn't necessarily have to be Tate.
00:37It could be Jeremiah Love.
00:39If you feel like other teams, and we're hearing buzz,
00:41that Arizona wants to move out of that,
00:43or they want to pick him,
00:44and other teams might want to jump into the No. 3 spot
00:47to get Jeremiah Love.
00:48Are you into that for any of these players that are coming out?
00:52800-636-1067 is the number.
00:56I'm just so convinced that they're going to get a very, very good player
00:59if they just stick.
01:01I'm kind of against it, but I'll support it.
01:04If they do it, I'll support it.
01:05If Washington had nine picks or ten picks in the draft,
01:08and they had a boatload next year.
01:10Then you're more of a candidate.
01:11Correct.
01:11But since they only have the 1, the 3, the 5, the 2-6s, and the 7,
01:16I mean, the 2-6s and the 7, I don't know.
01:18They may not even make the teams,
01:20but I wouldn't be that anxious to move up.
01:24Yeah, not having the No. 2...
01:25Even if I really loved a guy.
01:27Definitely hurts them.
01:28Because I guarantee they love more than one guy.
01:30100%.
01:31But you've got Laramie Tunsil as part of giving up that second-round pick,
01:35which is great,
01:35but you'd still love to have the second-round pick.
01:37So I think they're much more in the business of,
01:39let's move back off of 7,
01:41if we have a group of guys that we really like,
01:43that we can get at 10 or 11,
01:45let's try to get that second-round pick back.
01:47I think that's a much more likely scenario than moving up.
01:50I really don't think that they're in a position where they're like,
01:56we've got to get a corner.
01:57We've just got to get a corner, like in the first round.
02:00You know what I mean?
02:00Right.
02:00First pick has to be a corner.
02:02Or first pick has to be running back.
02:04Or first pick has to be wide receiver.
02:06I don't think they're in that position,
02:08so that does lend you more to move.
02:11Now, if there was a huge hole in it,
02:13we've got to get a quarterback.
02:14Okay, then you move up.
02:16Right.
02:17Then you move up.
02:18All right, 800-636-105.
02:20800-637, want to hear from you.
02:22I am that guy that I will question it,
02:25but I'll support whatever they do.
02:27I will support whatever they do, but I will question it.
02:30Let's go to Ron.
02:32Ron, what's up, buddy?
02:33You're on with the junkies.
02:36Good morning, fellas.
02:37First of all, this year's draft is probably the most intriguing draft
02:42that I can recall being a Washington fan.
02:45What are we going to do?
02:47What if?
02:47What if?
02:48Why is that?
02:49I don't see it.
02:50I just, I mean, there's so many players that we can get
02:53at that particular position at number seven.
02:56I don't agree with going up.
02:58Absolutely not.
02:59We need the draft picks, what we do have.
03:02There was a mock draft that, I don't know who it was,
03:06said that we could possibly trade with Dallas
03:08and move down to 12 and get to 20.
03:10Absolutely not.
03:11We do not trade with the enemy to get them their best pass rusher
03:14to go after our franchise quarterback.
03:17I don't agree with that at all, even though we do need to pick.
03:20Now, with the Jeremiah Love situation, great player.
03:23We've got a stacked running back room.
03:26My concern is how well is he going to do with an offensive line in the NFL
03:32compared to the offensive line that he had at Notre Dame
03:36and the number two running back that's projected coming out.
03:41It doesn't look for Notre Dame too.
03:42So that's telling me them hogs was doing their job for those running backs.
03:46Not taking nothing away from Love.
03:48But my personal opinion, I don't have a problem moving back a little bit
03:52to get a cornerback where Sonny Stiles is there.
03:56You've got to get Sonny Stiles at number seven.
03:59People love Sonny Stiles.
04:00Yeah, I just don't think Stiles is falling to seven.
04:05I don't think he's falling out of the top five.
04:09I mean, I think if Adam Peters and Quinn
04:11really want Sonny Stiles,
04:13I feel like that's a guy that they have to move up for.
04:16I don't think they have to move up for Carnell Tate.
04:18I just feel like there's a good chance if you stay at seven
04:21and keep it in your pants, Carnell Tate,
04:23there's a good chance he's there for you.
04:26Now, that could blow up in your face if Cleveland wants to pick,
04:29you know, like a stud that went to Ohio State.
04:32It's a good story.
04:33Stays in Cleveland.
04:34Okay, then you have to pivot.
04:37But these groups of personnel people,
04:40they don't just have their heart set on one player.
04:42Like, they've been war planning and war gaming this for months.
04:46Yeah.
04:47You know, like if somebody snakes a player away from them,
04:50it's not like us having somebody snaked away from us
04:53in a goofy fantasy draft.
04:54Oh, what do we do?
04:55They're going to be fine.
04:56They're not going to panic.
04:57They have a plan.
04:58Well, if everybody's all in on Stiles,
05:01I almost feel like Bailey's a can't-miss-er.
05:04If a guy like him slips, here's why I sit in Stiles.
05:07Because he's gone two or three in every month that I've seen.
05:10If I'm Peters, I know that I get one of these six guys.
05:15That's what I said yesterday.
05:17Stiles, Love, Tate, Downs, Reese, Bailey.
05:20Yeah.
05:20I get one of those six.
05:21You're getting a stud.
05:22Yeah, I just don't have to do anything.
05:24Guaranteed.
05:24And one of them falls in my lap.
05:26We're always in the lane, too.
05:26The number one corner in the draft.
05:28Yeah, man, it's Jordan Lane.
05:29Like, I didn't even put him on the list.
05:31But I know I'm getting one of those six studs.
05:33That's why I said stick.
05:33I know it's a certainty.
05:35That's why I stick.
05:35Why would I move?
05:36Stick and pick.
05:37Why would I move off of seven?
05:39Stick and pick.
05:40Stick and pick.
05:41Stick and pick.
05:42If anything, I'm moving down to nine or ten.
05:44Stick and pick.
05:45And getting more picks.
05:46Or move down a couple picks.
05:48I mean, if three of those guys are available.
05:51Maybe.
05:52And the Jets are calling.
05:53Look, I said yesterday I wouldn't want to go past about ten.
05:57JP said he'd go down to 16 to get the Jets pick.
06:00And then to get a second rounder and a fourth rounder.
06:03I said, that would be the furthest I would go.
06:05That was the Daniel Jeremiah mock thing.
06:07Yeah, I don't think I'd go down to 16.
06:08I would do that.
06:09Look, I was looking at last year's draft.
06:11There were four draft day deals in the first round.
06:14The Jaguars moved up to select Travis Hunter.
06:17They swapped picks with.
06:19The Browns.
06:20The Browns, who got the number five pick.
06:23They swapped like a second rounder and a fourth rounder and a future first rounder.
06:28So they paid a hefty price to be able to get Travis Hunter.
06:32They drafted Tootin and a safety in the sixth round.
06:38You had the Giants move up to take Jackson Dart.
06:41Now that was the 25th pick.
06:43But they traded a second round pick and two third round picks to move up to the first round.
06:50You had the Rams always trade away their first round pick.
06:54The Falcons traded up to get the number 26 pick in the first round.
06:58And then the Eagles moved up just to pick.
07:01Right.
07:02They were 32nd.
07:03They moved up to 31 to draft linebacker Jihad Campbell.
07:07So we know there are going to be teams that move up in the draft because they covet certain players.
07:14All right, let's go to Mark.
07:15And I think he's calling from Clinton.
07:18Hey, Mark.
07:18What's up, buddy?
07:19What do you think?
07:20What's going on, guys?
07:22Good morning.
07:23I was just talking to Draft.
07:25And I think everybody's talking around this.
07:28I think it's going to be Downs.
07:31He's going to change their life.
07:34I've thought that for a long time.
07:36Downs would be a great pick.
07:38Yeah, EB, you and I think alike.
07:41But we've got to stop talking around this thing.
07:44They're not drafting a wide receiver at seven.
07:46It's not happening.
07:48Okay?
07:48But I'll call back and me a Copa.
07:51I can do that.
07:52But I think it's going to be Downs.
07:54If Downs is gone, then where do you go to?
07:57Do I?
07:59I mean, if Downs is gone and the defensive players are gone, then we've got to take Tate if he's
08:05there.
08:06You just said they're not going to take a wide out.
08:08You just said they're not taking a wide out.
08:10I give him the benefit of the doubt.
08:12No, no, no.
08:13No, no.
08:14Hold on, guys.
08:15I want Downs, but I said they're not going to take a wide out.
08:19They might love Tate at that spot because of what's left.
08:25We don't know what's going to be left.
08:27Right.
08:28Well, there's still going to be a really good player left at seven, even if Downs goes.
08:32I mean, most of these drafts have Downs going later than seven.
08:36I know, but I like him at seven.
08:39Evie, what do you think?
08:41Of what?
08:42Of Downs at seven?
08:43Downs at seven?
08:44I mean, I think, you know, unless like a Bailey's there or somebody that's just maybe a little
08:49bit more impactful, it'd be hard for me to have an argument against Downs.
08:54They say he'd be the leader of your defense right away.
08:57He's instinctive.
08:59He's ahead of everybody else.
09:01He's a stud at two different huge programs.
09:04I mean, it's a no-brainer to me.
09:06And that's what I was saying, and I was talking to Drav, and I'll get off.
09:10I'll let you guys go.
09:11But, I mean, ask Valdez.
09:13What did Ed Reed do for Baltimore?
09:15Of course.
09:15That could happen for us.
09:16Of course.
09:17We saw what Sean Taylor did here.
09:18I mean, safeties can be—I think a lot of times we sleep on safeties.
09:22I know I do at times.
09:23No doubt about it.
09:26But I was really—see, everyone's saying Sonny Stiles is Dan Quinn's guy.
09:30I remember early on in this process, Dan Quinn raving about Caleb Downs.
09:35Now, he raved about all the Ohio State guys, but the stuff he said about Downs really resonated
09:40with me, that he's like, right away, he's your smartest guy on your defense.
09:45Right away, you know, he's the leader of your defense.
09:49They don't really say that about rookies very often.
09:52Yeah, here—this is what Todd McShay said about the Commanders at seven.
09:55If Sonny Stiles is sitting there for the Commanders, I'm told I'm pretty damn good authority
09:59that Dan Quinn, that's his guy.
10:02Stiles is going seven to Washington if he's on the board.
10:05And I actually believe that's if Jeremiah Love were on the board, too.
10:08That's what I'm hearing strong.
10:10End quote.
10:12Who?
10:12I'm sorry.
10:12Who's saying that?
10:13It's pretty strong.
10:14Oh, McShay.
10:14Todd McShay.
10:15Just getting back to Chris Sims' possibility, and I don't blame these guys for throwing this
10:20stuff out there in mocks.
10:21It's what they're doing.
10:21They're putting out different mocks all the time, throwing out different scenarios.
10:24It's fair.
10:26I think traditionally, though, when they've researched it, trading up in the first round
10:31has more often than not backfired.
10:35If you use Pro Bowl as a metric over a five-year span, teams that traded up in the first
10:41round
10:4228 times, okay, only four of those players went on to make a Pro Bowl, right?
10:49I mean, certainly you can point to instances where you trade up and you get a Pat Mahomes,
10:54maybe you trade up and get a Tristan Wirfs, but then there are also the Trubisky's, the
11:00hell, the Robert Griffins, the Trey Lance's.
11:04Big bust.
11:05You know?
11:06Yeah.
11:06I think they moved up big time to get Julio Jones.
11:08That works.
11:10But wasn't it Jones that they traded up?
11:12That one definitely worked out.
11:13That one works.
11:14Big trade with Cleveland, I believe.
11:15I think on the whole, trading up, more often than not, backfires.
11:20And teams are aware of that.
11:22They know sort of the history of that kind of thing.
11:25But if you're desperate, what are you going to do?
11:27You don't have a quarterback.
11:28You got to go.
11:29Now, this is not a quarterback-driven draft.
11:32We may not see a lot of that.
11:33Although some teams are potentially going to trade up maybe into the later part of the
11:37first round to get like a Ty Simpson.
11:39Yeah.
11:39And I think that's going to hurt Peters and company that there aren't a bunch of quarterbacks
11:44to be selected in this draft.
11:45Yeah.
11:46Because someone would like to get up to seven.
11:48Yeah, because if you're sitting at seven and there's four quarterbacks that people love
11:50and want in the top 15, then that seven pick becomes more valuable than it already is.
11:55But if there's one running back that's head and shoulders above everybody else in your mind,
12:00like if there's a cliff in another position, then you might trade up.
12:05I'd be stunned if the commanders traded up into the top five or top.
12:08Like if you hear on draft night that the commanders have jumped from seven to three
12:13to get Jeremiah Love, I'll be stunned.
12:16I'll be stunned, but it would tell me, man, they must think this guy's the next Barry Sanders.
12:20I'm all in.
12:22Yeah.
12:22I'll find a way to get behind.
12:24Well, he better be because you're probably giving up next year's one to move up four spots.
12:27And if you're Adam Peters, that could be like a job-defining type of moment for you.
12:33Like it either keeps your job for another three or four years, or it loses your job if it doesn't
12:38work out.
12:38But that's a long, long, long shot that that would ever happen.
12:41Totally.
12:42But if they did it, just know that that means they think that guy is clearly the best fit for
12:50them,
12:50and they cannot afford to pass up on him.
12:52So at that point, I just got to be all in.
12:54Yeah.
12:55I got to be excited.
12:56Yeah, you got to trust him.
12:56If that happens, then the crowd at Honor Brewing on Thursday night would definitely go wild
13:01if the Commanders jumped into the top three.
13:04Right.
13:04Because if they jump into the top three, it's to take Jeremiah Love.
13:08Yeah.
13:08It's not to take Carnell Tate.
13:10It's not to take Sonny Stiles.
13:12What if it was to take David Bailey?
13:13I don't think they would do that.
13:14I don't know.
13:15Again, you might be able to sit at seven.
13:17Bailey could just fall down the board to you.
13:19If David Bailey's there at seven, that's going to be hard to pass him up to.
13:22I mean, 14 and a half sacks in one season, if you could do anything close to that.
13:26Out of all the teams that could possibly trade out in the top seven, I think the number
13:30one team that would do that would be Arizona.
13:32Arizona is a prime candidate.
13:34Yeah.
13:34If I had to rank the teams that would do that, I don't think the Jets would trade out a
13:38two.
13:39But I think that the Cardinals could trade out a three.
13:41All right.
13:42Coming up later, we'll continue our draft coverage.
13:44Paul Dottino covers the Giants for WFAN.
13:46Ben, he will join us coming up at 845.
13:49And Ben Standing, he'll talk Commander's Draft with us at 925.
13:53Five.
