The state government has cast doubt over when it will deliver on election promises for areas that didn't vote for Labor M-Ps. Six weeks out from the state budget, it's considering the timing of 300-million-dollars in commitments for Murray Bridge and Mount Barker. But the comments have sparked accusations of political favouritism.

00:02Big promises for SA's growing cities.
00:05Technical College, police station.
00:07Before the election, Labor pledged $100 million for Murray Bridge and $200 million for Mount Barker.
00:13But it wasn't enough to convince local voters to elect Labor MPs.
00:17And with the state budget looming, the government's now reviewing its priorities.
00:22We proposed things that people did not support in some parts of South Australia,
00:25so we'll have to look at all those things in terms of timing.
00:28It is appropriate for the Treasurer to carefully examine that.
00:32Mount Barker as well.
00:34That needs to be very carefully looked at,
00:37particularly given the economic circumstances that we face.
00:40The Premier says he's committed to the two cities.
00:42It's just a matter of timing.
00:44Mount Barker's new MP says the sooner, the better.
00:47We can't wait another 18 months or have these delayed
00:49because there are already things that are overdue.
00:52He says there's community support for the plans,
00:54including a new high school and $80 million intersection upgrade.
00:58The fact that these are not Labor seats
01:00shouldn't impact on the government's decision to action the promises that they've made.
01:05I think what this says to communities across the state
01:08is that they're only willing to deliver on their projects
01:10if and when it suits their political purposes.
01:12The commitments that we made in Murray Bridge,
01:14which we're absolutely committed to
01:16because we do believe they're the right thing to do.
01:18The government is facing pressure on a number of fronts
01:20when it comes to its June budget.
01:22It has to make good on its election commitments,
01:25along with factoring in the fuel crisis,
01:27interest rate rises and calls for more cost-of-living relief.
01:30Then there's the flow-on effect of rising construction costs,
01:34with several major infrastructure projects underway,
01:36and all this needs to be balanced with an eye on the state's rising debt bill.
