SA Labor promises significant Mount Barker infrastructure upgrade if re-elected in March

The South Australian Labor Party has promised to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on infrastructure upgrades in Mount Barker if it is re-elected in March. The Premier says the package is future-focused but has acknowledged investment in the area hasn't kept pace with its rapid growth.

00:09The Premier in campaign mode in the Adelaide Hills,

00:12alongside Labor candidate, Mount Barker Mayor David Leach,

00:16unveiling a $200 million plan for the area.

00:19There are things that have to be done, they need to be done now.

00:22The pledge includes an upgrade to the notorious Adelaide Road-Hawthorne Road intersection,

00:27a new police station and a TAFE trades workshop,

00:30as well as a redevelopment of Mount Barker High School,

00:33the purchase of land for a second campus and establishment of a local 24-7 pharmacy.

00:39There was a lot of growth that occurred in Mount Barker

00:42without the appropriate investment from government.

00:44And we are committed to making that investment.

00:47This is Labor's problem.

00:49They've had 20 years to do something about it, they simply haven't.

00:52Mount Barker is in the seat of Carville.

00:55It's never been held by Labor, but the party's making a strong play for it

00:59at the state election in two months' time.

01:02The current MP here, Independent Dan Cregan, is retiring from politics.

01:07And while Labor hopes its well-known local candidate will win over voters,

01:11the Liberals also have their eyes set on winning back the seat.

01:16Their candidate, Bradley Orr, is also a member of the Mount Barker Council.

01:25Now, we hope that a lot of people can take our time to come.

01:28We hope that there's no idea of international debate,

01:30but that that fits all.

01:32So we will try to do a third-night study.

01:34We hope that there are a lot of people who are involved in this event.

01:36And then we have a few people that want to get to the right,

01:37and you can definitely get to the right.
