00:04oh no come on now I do worry that oh now there's another one right totty hey look
00:14I don't know look what's going on trouble what's going on Roy is that you ah have
00:20attracted them both they're not even paying any attention to me and I paid
00:24for both of them I'm always a great believer that if a dog runs up to
00:28someone they're a really nice person or just running away just running away from the robbery
00:37and we're off trawling Britain's sheds this is absolutely unbelievable for the most intriguing
00:46I have never ever seen one of these the most exciting oh now that is a naughty car the most
00:55surprising classic cars it is very you I love it we're gonna buy them fix them up
01:03go and sell them for a tidy profit nice little earner hey this is shed and buried classic cars
01:18we're off to Wiltshire on our latest search for a classic car we're going to meet a chap called
01:25Denny now Denny hi has a penchant for uh British classics does he yeah sort of it's gonna like you
01:33yeah so mostly mostly 50s and 60s British classics a smattering of 70s and maybe a little sprinkle
01:40of earlier stuff roots group stuff roots group we're talking sunbeam singer hillman humber okay so look
01:48we're going to Wiltshire for some Britishers I've looked at the photographs but I couldn't quite see
01:54into the depths of his sheds and his sheds look large do they yeah okay mate all right hey look
02:02as far as
02:03I'm concerned it'll be quite fun yep this is going to be good whether we find something rootsy or cutesy
02:10who knows but Denny's place in Wiltshire here we come Denny I'm really excited about this what's your poison
02:21it started about 40 years ago when I got into um something rapier convertibles him and minxes that
02:28seems English stuff yeah what was it about the roots group stuff that attracted you the word I think of
02:33is cute oh okay minxes rapiers are cute cars is everything for sale well quite a lot but not
02:41everything some have a lot of sentimental value and it just would be hard to wrench away from me okay
02:46other ones I just feel happier to let them go what we'll do is we'll have a little rummage and
02:50then as
02:51always hopefully we'll have a haggle at the end sure yeah brilliant great stuff all right well look
02:56we'll venture in all right yeah you'll call me if you need me thank you so much okay so here
03:02we go
03:02another treasure trove of british cars oh that's red leather but this time no austin's or morris's in
03:10sight it's absolutely mint instead we'll start with a gorgeous rover p4 that might be uh beyond our
03:20means what would you mean by that they're lovely things but one that's just been re-trimmed it means
03:26that well it's well how much would something like that go for i think eight maybe nine ten sort of
03:34maybe ten ish kind of thing and they are a beautiful place to be inside there you've got
03:39you've got lots of leather you've got wood you've got chrome it's conducive to uh to a good long
03:47driving experience that's the first thing of interest next as denny promised it's a hillman the
03:56first of his roots group classics oh you little minx oh is it it's easier an early minx the hillman
04:04minx is one of the most long-lived models in british car history released in 1931 as a low-cost
04:11family
04:11saloon it went through many different variations in its 40-year life this one looks late 30s
04:18can you imagine somebody in the boardroom saying what should we call our car cheeky little minx yeah
04:27but now obviously uh that's part of history it is yeah that interior is beautiful
04:34it is take a look at that i think this probably has been re-upholstered so it's not the original
04:41and it's from that era that people have just forgotten now i know people go for vintage stuff
04:47which is pre-1934 generally but these in the middle in the middle lands they don't like them
04:53nobody likes a midland should we give it a roof chop and put some big wheels on it a v8
04:58in it i need
04:59to educate you here why don't you just turn around not all the way that's it there we go right
05:06now what's
05:07that from minx to super minx okay but this is post-war yes this is so this is 1960s we're
05:15now
05:16right at the point where the roots group is well should we say dabbling in americana a little bit
05:24so you've got the fins out the back there wait a minute wait a minute so roots group were what
05:29hillman turned into but no the roots group owned a number of car brands so hillman singer sunbeam
05:39humber as well so all of those were all roots group anyway so this now i because i can read
05:46it
05:46is a super mint that's right yeah right now i think these are great the hood has seen better days
05:53but
05:53uh would you just hold that yeah sure just let me have a quick look
06:01anything underneath yeah it's not bad news all right what i will say is most of the structure
06:06under there is good yeah maybe a little bit of a little bit of a job in the center of
06:11the cruciform
06:12there a minx is renowned for a little bit of rusty yeah so we'd have to do some dealing with
06:18the bonnet
06:19now possibly so but you know it's all part of its charm all right you know when things get a
06:24little
06:24bit older they get sort of pockmarked and creased and grazed and they don't look as lovely as they
06:30once did are you having a go no you'll think you might be now is that one younger
06:39denny's slightly newer kids on the block include a sunbeam rapier now this is a lovely car yeah but
06:47what we've got a little bit crispiness around the sills and the successor to the p4 the rover p5
06:57are you feeling diplomatic no i've never felt diplomatic no i don't suppose you do but this
07:02was your diplomat special transport of the 1970s yeah oh my gosh look there's loads of cars with
07:08stuff on them yeah two volvo p1800s
07:15made famous by roger moore in his tv series the saint the volvo p1800 was one of the most successful
07:23scandy cars of the early 1960s as well as the two-door model there was a hatchback or shooting brake
07:32it's in this state and they have very long legs on a motorway they are a real great cruiser i
07:39used
07:39to drive one of these and on a regular basis this color as well did you yeah i did i
07:44tell you what
07:44they're really good for as well storing stuff they are yeah yeah well it's got the longer roof you've
07:49got a bit more of a shop denny come come in here now look fuzz is eulogizing about these 1800s
07:55has
07:55it got the the sort of ornate jensen style cowhorn bumpers they are at the back of the shed so
08:01it's
08:01probably a jensen built one so yeah a west bromwich special which means that it's quite a survivor
08:08actually so why do you love these denny my dad when we were kids had a volvo amazon estate so
08:15that got me
08:15into volvos we had a lovely cream one with red interior yeah and then later on i sort of started
08:22looking around and like the 1800s and that was it yeah that was it so i thought one estate one
08:27saloon
08:27when did this last run 15 years ago i'd say okay okay yeah all right recent then when i brought
08:33it
08:33from a brief previous shed and brought it to this one oh right okay so it ran because you drove
08:38it in
08:38here it ran yeah yeah great denny thank you so much now i know there's one more shed to look
08:42at
08:43come on then fuzzer let's gonna have a look denny's final shed is another trip back in time
08:49to the era of the classic british saloon these look ready for action okay so look this is a singer
08:58yeah now this is a uh a car named after you after your proportions and the gazelle
09:07released in 1956 the singer gazelle was billed as the luxury end of the roots group's model range
09:14with a high spec interior and snappy performance these are accomplished they've got decent engines
09:21they're good family saloons solid this one looks worse than i think it is yeah i think it's a lovely
09:28period piece there are a couple more p-series rovers in here but i think we've seen enough
09:35yeah i just want to do a deal i'm really excited yeah okay so look in here we've got the
09:40gazelle yeah
09:40right in the other shed yeah the pre-war minx pre-war minxie and then there's the super duper
09:47minx yeah i like that that's a convertible what else we got there was the sunbeam rapier it's a
09:54little bit crispy a little bit crispy underneath should we go see yeah come on then
10:08okay where should we start do you think do you know there was the sunbeam rapier with the red
10:14flash needs a bit more work that's quite close to my heart all right that's okay um so look your
10:19little
10:20singer tell me about that the gazelle the gazelle yeah i mean i'm happier in a way for you to
10:25relieve
10:25me of that oh really okay less emotional connection for some reason all right i think we're talking
10:32under four ish we're talking sort of three six ish okay only 26 000 miles what from you yes where
10:38are we
10:38me that's all right um super minx in red yes yeah i think four two okay four two okay okay
10:47there's the
10:48volvos either of those for sale i can tell no they're they're more expensive cars they're up in the teens
10:54really just because of what they are no absolutely but also he inhaled just then yeah yeah well i
11:00know you know i know i know you're not going to get a good if someone inhales you don't get
11:03a good
11:03deal no no that's true no that's not okay what about can i just steam in uh you can yeah
11:09three two for
11:23the singer we're in wiltshire with denny in his eclectic collection of classic british and swedish cars
11:31we've bid 3 200 on a singer gazelle but he wants 3006. why don't we meet in the middle at
11:41three
11:43and a half yeah i mean you could go for the singer and not the song three and a half
11:48come on well yeah
11:50okay yeah i like okay there we are fantastic yeah
11:58two days later back at the shed we show off the uh not so goods
12:07do you like me antelope your gazelle what your gazelle
12:12a singer like a sewing machine is it the same thing no oh don't be stupid the singer sewing machine
12:18uh
12:18company was uh originated in the united states whereas this well he came from coventry i bought
12:25this for two reasons right uh one it was cheap uh what was the other one what was the other
12:31reason
12:31it was closest to the door yeah i personally think that actually it's done what is it 28 000 miles
12:38or
12:38something it's supposed to have done but i've been looking at this or is it 128 i think it might
12:43be
12:43128 000 miles because the driver's seat is really i was going to say the same fuzz that is tattered
12:50that doesn't happen in 26 000 miles and can i put can i point out the plethora of blue paints
12:58at the front i think at some point this may have had a little bit of a shunt because also
13:03the front
13:04wings don't quite fit and the bonnet look the bonnet's arch there it's had a front end it's a bit
13:09like you know you know rod hull and emu when emu did that sort of like thing where he pulled
13:13his
13:13beak up that's like that yeah i can't see any dents in it i thought we could turn this we
13:21could just
13:22give it a polish spqr exactly let's let's see what we can get out it looks so much better with
13:28a nice
13:28polish of course it will yeah you know once guy and you have polished it it will be great
13:35so it's rough on the outside but what about the mechanicals
13:40let's see if we can get it started shall we let's see if it's got an engine oh don't be
13:44like that
13:45honestly you lot are just all ganging up on me for no reason thank you very much it looks quite
13:51tidy
13:51fuel parts off the air filters off yeah so something's going on here isn't it um should we
13:58just turn it over to see if we got yeah let's turn it okay are you ready give it a
14:03go
14:06and again
14:09okay okay so no first time starter and even with a squirt of easy start it's not happy
14:19hold on what i think that the pump's not working i think there's probably some dirt underneath one of
14:26the valves probably yeah shall we put a different fuel supply tanks right yeah and see if we can get
14:32get the fuel to to go through via gravity and perhaps dislodge anything in there can i just add
14:38to this conversation yeah i've had a rummage in the dash there's a lovely owner's book very lovely and
14:44there is a workshop manual now weirdly the pages that have been ripped out and placed on the top
14:49yeah our fuel system oh there we are let's hope the joke is not on us
14:59there we go hang up on that
15:03fuzz connects up the dummy tank
15:07but there's no instant joy
15:11okay nothing at all no so we've got a duff pump yeah we've got a duff pump so we need
15:16to take that
15:16off and clean it out and try and coax it back to life back to life yeah next fuzz de
15:23-rigs the pump
15:24but there's nothing obvious wrong with it
15:29it sounds like it's making the right the right noises this is this is the input if i put my
15:34finger over
15:34there then operate it it gets to a point where maybe the little arm wasn't located correctly in
15:42the engine fuzz yeah i think that might be the case so let's just put the fuel supply on there
15:46and see if we can uh okay to suck it up
15:51yes it's working it's working it's working bloody hell it's working it's coming out that's great
15:56it works perfect it might just be that it was uh assembled wrongly
16:03back on goes the remote tank and fuzz does the honors
16:08there we go
16:12sounds lovely it does doesn't it
16:15not rapidly at all i told you it'd be beautiful i told you let's go for a test drive okay
16:22well we'll
16:22connect up the fuel system and make sure that it draws in fuel from the tank
16:29fuzz re-plums the pump and de-rigs the temporary tank
16:37struggling a bit but without the external tank the fuel just ain't flowing
16:45okay
16:47okay oh oh dear what happened there suddenly the pump filled up and then it just stopped
16:56it's not enough though is it no i think we need to get an airline on it yeah yeah let's
17:00give it a go
17:01the other possibility is that a fuel pipe is blocked out comes the air compressor and an improvised bung
17:11right so i've got some rag around here just going to press it against here i'm going to blow some
17:16air
17:16through
17:23nothing yet
17:27yes that took a little while okay i think the pipe might be quite a small diameter pipe
17:34but let's see if we can connect it up again and see if we get the action out of it
17:38all right
17:54so we'll have to take a take a view on that in the meantime let's put the filter back on
18:00and then we'll have to replace the fuel pump or at least rebuild it yeah so uh we'll have to
18:05take a
18:05take a view on that in the meantime let's put the filter back on and uh perhaps have a little
18:11test
18:12yeah definitely on goes the air filter
18:17and clunk goes the bonnet god that reminds me of a 1960s children's tv show what the clangers
18:30bagsy yeah i'm a passenger oh no i'll drive it you drive yeah okay me and skill in the back
18:35all right
18:35yeah let's go in we go i've got to tell you that sounds smooth it does sound smooth and off
18:46we go
18:49we're going up to second gear look fuzzer okay let's try this really nice
18:54sorry you lot well it's a driver's car yeah it is a driver's car it's a driver's car it's not
19:01it's not
19:02an admirer's car is it
19:07the gazelle was a classic mid-range model more upmarket than a hillman not so aspirational as
19:14a sunbeam it's quite peppy isn't it yeah yeah it is really do you think that mileage could be
19:21original because it doesn't rattle or smoke at all well i think most of the things that did rattle
19:25have fallen off that's a successful first little spin happy i think it's lovely yeah it will be
19:38all right i'm glad i'm inside it and can't see the outside yeah that's right that's the great thing
19:43about this car once you're in here yeah it's rather charming that's right let's just try a
19:48wiggle spin on your driveway and embrace the outside okay can we okay by cleaning it and making
19:56it lovely okay in the wild gazelles keep comfortable and parasite free through a mixture of social
20:06licking and dust bathing i think they've gone for the latter on this one we could be ready for the
20:16jet wash in a minute i think so yeah do you think do you want to get it revved up
20:22prior to our visit this gazelle has spent lord knows how many years on denny's farm so there's
20:29a lot of crime to banish oh yeah that's a good idea get in there mate yeah be careful though
20:37it might snap
20:38it might come up straight through the spot
20:45joking aside the washing is only stage one polishing has got to come next
20:53it needs a little bit of a cut on it doesn't it we should get guy to polish it because
20:58he's really
20:59good yeah that's a good idea actually very good he is very good at this sort of thing but there's
21:04one
21:04thing about this gazelle though what it is living up to its name because it was a little deer
21:14so we've got our gazelle running and i've got to admit looking a bit better it'll definitely benefit
21:20from some skid and polish but whether we'll ever get our three and a half grand back remains to be
21:26seen
21:41we've got our singer gazelle running and riding but it still needs work before we try to sell it
21:51then me and assistant rob encounter a close relative
22:00where did this come from i thought you'd be happy why would we be happy basically you've made a mistake
22:08once so you've decided to make the same mistake again so that it looks like you've done it on all
22:13right okay so hang on before i can tell you're gonna start this is utter madness no because
22:19if you make a mistake yes if you don't learn from it yes you're technically mad you've gone and bought
22:26what looks roughly the same maybe a bit older it's a more or less more i know that's a hillman
22:31and this
22:31is a singer but it's more or less the same car and you're expecting a different result firstly i don't
22:37believe that i made a mistake with the singer and also if i did it's your fault as well me
22:43and rob
22:43uh was summoned by my mate james who works in the pub and he says i've had this for about
22:5015
22:51years do you want it you've been down the pub and bought a car yeah that is not the best
22:55place to buy
22:56is it fuzz the only thing is you won't have been drunk is the only thing no no i was
23:01sober as a judge
23:02obviously really nice inside it is i like this better than i like this i think i agree yeah
23:08probably works better condition all right okay look it doesn't run okay it has been in his garden for
23:1315 years or in his garage i hadn't seen it but apart from the first i'll give you 500 quid
23:18for it
23:18he goes cool okay mate okay so i gave him 500 smash little monkey there yeah and um me and
23:25rob went to
23:25pick it up obviously that's why i haven't been around fiddling with that oh can i take a look under
23:30the
23:30bonnet of course you can i think for 500 quid that doesn't look all right i thought you're going
23:34to say you paid 1800 it's not heavily no i think it's 500 quid is 500 quid i think it's
23:40all right yeah
23:44by the mid 60s the hillman minx was the slightly poorer relation of the gazelle
23:50basically the same car with lower spec trim and a different badge and grille 15 years in the garage
23:57has done this one no favors do the brakes work ah do the brakes work rob not at all does
24:05the clutch work
24:06clutch no throttle throttle i haven't tried anything now we have okay somebody's been having a fiddle with
24:11this all right so i think we need to continue with the fiddle to fiddle and fiddle we do yeah
24:20okay let's
24:21try it on easy start let's uh switch on the ignition like the gazelle the engine will run on easy
24:27start
24:27yes yes oh listen to that straight away 15 years but again there's a blockage somewhere in the fuel
24:38system the pump has pumped nothing we fetch the compressor and give it a blast ready yeah okay here
24:46it comes it's blocked isn't it yeah absolutely nothing happening this end no so fuzz goes down
24:53under cuts the pipe that comes out of the tank and then uses a wire to unblock it oh i'm
25:00right up there
25:00now god blimey i could have been a surgeon you know i could carumba the blockage is vanquished
25:10so what i need to do now is bridge the gap uh in the bit of fuel pipe that i've
25:15removed and then
25:19we can try again see if we can get it to get it to run on some actual petrol this
25:24time
25:2410 minutes later we're ready for a second attempt ignition on starts it up contact start
25:37it's amazing yeah smooth that's running on fuel yes yes we're on a roll and when skid uses a blow
25:50torch to loosen the clutch cylinder we've got a moveable clutch oh there we are fantastic yeah it
25:54works fantastic we could go for test drive it is a bit of a squeeze with rob in the back
26:01but off
26:02we go this is going rather nicely it's really smooth i'm a bit scared about get i'll try second what
26:08gear am i in first first how smooth is that oh how smooth is that hey that was amazing
26:16the foot brake doesn't work but the handbrake might try the brakes now
26:23is there nothing on the pedal does it go to the floor no no it just goes right to the
26:27floor i'll tell
26:28you what the gearbox is uh sawed itself out gearbox is sweet man i like this car so do i
26:37it drives
26:38really nicely go on try for third i like the layout as well i like the bench seat there's third
26:44yeah
26:44all strong isn't it it's beautiful fourth yeah this isn't a bad little car you know this is nice 500
26:52quid it's an absolute bargain it's just amazing there you are no synchro needed just beautifully
27:01hang on oh when this has got brakes it's gonna be pucker all right okay well i know what my
27:09next job
27:09is then back at base we get out the blow torch again and heat up the brake master cylinder
27:16not getting any resistance not yet no it's moving up and down so it's doing something being shushed now
27:22at first nothing happens but after a bit of spattering i'm definitely getting something
27:28let's see now yeah the brakes are working yeah i'm pulling it forward you're stopping the car move
27:35the brakes are working hey i think everything's fixed it's charging it's ticking over the brakes are
27:42fixed yeah it just needs some new tires that is a proper result this car you know mate honestly
27:47i think you did really well i know yeah thank you so very very
27:53next day the great work continues as we make a determined effort to clean up both cars
28:00alan focuses on the minx look at that skid gives the gazelle a mop and a moan
28:06i am trying to t-cut this car but the problem i've got is every car i've t-cut before
28:12has actually
28:13had paint on it you can't t-cut bodywork and fuzz preps the wheels for the new tires which should
28:21be
28:21turning up shortly look at that it's been off the road for a while i meanwhile are back on rattle
28:29can
28:29duty touching up the minx's wheels this is what's called in the trade wafting just go around the rim
28:36like that but when dougal arrives the new tires will be on it and it'll look lovely
28:44half an hour later dougal and his assistant adam are here with some very special tires for our hillman
28:51minx perelli skin tomatoes or cintoratos oh right okay i like those very distinctive tread pattern on
28:57those 1952 so what year is that car that one is about 57 58 oh your bobby dazzle perfect oh
29:03maybe
29:03maybe 59 so if you could afford them in the day yeah it was like the coolest upgrade you could
29:09do
29:09to your car what was that radials well radials and particularly prelli cinturato
29:15developed in the early 50s the cinturato was according to perelli's advertising so safe you could
29:22drive with your eyes closed adam starts by using a portable jig to remove the old tires
29:29there's the bead seat that the tire sits on there and there it is on the other side and then
29:35this
29:35is the bead of the tire and then that is the well of the tire so when adam puts the
29:41tire in and pulls
29:42the the the tire over the rim he's pulling the other side of the bead into the well here to
29:48enable
29:48the tire to go over the rim then he puts on a brand new tire and it's corresponding inner tube
29:55modern cars don't use inner tubes modern tires have got lower profiles the flex in the sidewall
30:02is in a smaller area of the tire so it's not suited to inner tubes but when you're on a
30:07tall profile tire
30:09and your wheel isn't suited to running without an inner tube you need to put a tube in back in
30:15the day
30:15these tires were the favorites of ferrari and maserati and thinking about two world famous
30:21performance cars has given me an idea you've got to ask yourself when you're looking at two virtually
30:27identical cars which one's the fastest depends who's driving it well very true very true so i thought
30:36we would return to that lovely little track in stand lake yeah little time trial well i was thinking
30:43more banger racing that track but we're not going to do that we're just going to race each other and
30:48see who's quickest yeah and we can pick who goes in what with the power of those cars surely the
30:56weight
30:57of the driver is going to be utterly critical i'm not going with him i'll guess
31:05in the final stage adam balances the wheels
31:11then once fuzz has refitted them and skidders polish to set a new hubcaps
31:16down goes the car and everything goes back in position
31:20dougal your tires look amazing that looks fantastic doesn't it what a transformation
31:28hey indeed do you know what i really genuinely think seeing as that's been in a hedge for 15
31:32years yeah i don't think that's bad do you i think it's fantastic mate this one i think
31:38we're quids in that one on the other hand is a depreciating asset that's quids out yeah i think
31:43that's yeah i think that's all right but hey which one is the fastest that's what we need to know
31:50so both cars are looking better and with its new boots the minx is particularly smart
31:56which one though will be the fastest and equally important will they both make the 10 miles to the
32:06racetrack
32:18two weeks ago we found a singer gazelle in a shed in wiltshire we fettled it cleaned it
32:29and founded a mate today the time has come to take them both racing
32:36okay so are they gonna make it to the track well that's the first test isn't it really
32:43it's sedately yeah i think what could go wrong okay well they've got fuel in them yeah new tires
32:49the brakes work do they yeah oh result what on both of them i believe so yeah oh that's great
32:55so look what are you two going in the um antelope we can do can't we yeah we are we
32:59know they're
33:00quite happy really we can nurture it we can nurture it okay nurture uh right i'll drive the uh oh
33:05no you're lark and telling his eyes no it needs a bit of sympathy it does need a bit of
33:09mechanical
33:09sympathy on the gear change yeah there's a little there's a little bit of a problem with the uh with
33:13the clutch shall we lead then we'll go are we leading do you know the way no okay let's go
33:20let's go
33:29do you realize this is a momentous occasion what because this is going to be the first time
33:37that this car has been out on the open road oh yeah for well 15 years yeah at least that
33:46it's just over 10 miles from base to stand lake arena touchwood we'll get there
33:55holding up the rear alan and skid are looking at a home in the gazelle
34:03it's rather pleasant isn't it i think it's delightful
34:11until this happens
34:26well i think we should pull the body and we all have to pull in what what's happening
34:32we've got a fuel blockage i think so okay we've blown the fuel to fuel back through this way but
34:37now i'm going to put some pressure in this side right and if al cranks then hopefully the pump will
34:42pick up okay and uh we'll get and do its thing we'll get some action we'll stand here and look
34:46ready yeah looking be hopeful okay we're ready
34:56what do we live to fight another day we're good to go guys you're really good isn't it yeah let's
35:03go
35:09once again fuzz has been able to blow through the blockage and the rest of the journey is thankfully
35:15uneventful
35:1810 minutes and five miles later we reach our goal the stand lake arena only for the gazelle to conk
35:26out
35:26yet again it was going really well until it stopped
35:34fuzz reattaches the compressor first to the front
35:41and then to the tank sounds like you old age and blockage
35:46it until finally yes yes yes yes fuzz you are something just incredible has it come out there
35:55then yeah yeah it has it's come out all over alan
36:02before the gazelle breaks down for a third time we get ready for that all essential pre-race briefing
36:09what we do is we're going to have a couple of timed experiences okay so the two drivers
36:17start like a lemon start by the tractor yeah you get in let's say all right you do two laps
36:24yeah you pull in get out swap over drivers yeah two laps and then finish whoever wins is the fastest
36:36one of the drivers sounds simple but our roots group all-stars are not quite race prepped
36:43so you two are going first remember swap over two laps matt is gonna do the old honors here
36:49just setting you off rather than the cars are you ready to roll yes okay on your marks get set
36:56go
36:59look at alan running he's locked the doors go on now we're off look at that wheel spin he's off
37:12and away
37:17stand lake is a former gravel pit that has been used as a race track since 1972
37:25that sounds like it's running on one cylinder absolutely flat out have you done his car no
37:34i haven't no i haven't no you have no i haven't nobbled it
37:41the oval track is just a quarter of a mile long but it still takes them an age to get
37:47to the swap over
37:53here we go here we go here we go this is it all right there you go change over quick
37:58come on
37:59wait let's get on with it going on one cylinder oh no go on get on one cylinder for the
38:04first
38:05lap whatever just making excuses there we are oh hang on go on this is it
38:13look at that look at that whoa
38:22souped up gazelles were occasionally used for rallying mainly in australia and new zealand
38:29it's not ideal first time i'm in here on a track
38:35this one though is thinner gruel
38:39we're coming in now right let's have the flag ready matt
38:51two minutes we want to rerun we had one cylinder for the first lap i'm sorry if you haven't prepared
38:56your car properly then that's your trouble my go is perfect al's was rubbish sorry it's all about
39:03the preparation yeah that's right can i just work on your car for 10 minutes then please uh no uh
39:08two
39:09minutes 32 i think it was it's derisory our turn hey
39:21two minutes 32 to beat okay on your marks yeah get set yeah go quick go on
39:27god butter i hope it doesn't start i've never driven this before
39:39don't push the clutch all the way down i'm not very poor wheel spin
39:54how are we doing doing all right under the bonnet the minx and the gazelle are pretty much the same
40:01car but our revived minx runs that little bit better yeah i'll tell you what it's quite fun though
40:12yeah tell you what it's going to be close did you reckon yeah
40:18i've got a great idea what you just slide across and i'll run around okay okay got it when we
40:24change over
40:29first two laps 96 seconds go i can't really stop i hope his brakes have seized on
40:44nice nice
40:51with fuzz at the wheel the next two are even faster
40:57i'm driving exceptionally
41:02here we go but by the end of the second lap the brakes have well and truly given up
41:09we're coming through yeah well we can't stop very well can we no we're just gonna need a
41:16let's just do a victory lap shall we yeah they've got that again what is going on here
41:22let's wait as we come around for our victory
41:25we don't actually know the timing yet no i think i think we've got it in the bag haven't we
41:30yeah we
41:31have yeah there we go let's go and uh revel in our victory
41:40can i just say we've had a bit of an issue
41:44what because i stopped the stopwatch oh early i stopped it after one lap for the second driver
41:50i got excited so i haven't really got a clue of the timing so you've either got to go again
41:56or it's a draw i'll have a draw i did completely foul that up i'm sorry that's the reason why
42:04i gave
42:05you the stopwatch hoping that we might get a little advantage yeah we got a massive advantage that's
42:10right yes and i'd like to believe we have actually won hey fantastic anyway let's get back and find out
42:17how much they're worth next day we do just that when our local classic car dealer chopper roy comes for
42:28a gander they both run and ride we've tested them greatly yes yes haven't we don't tell him where
42:35is that how much for the singer um five or six hundred quid and that's only because i want the
42:47chrome
42:48off it for another one sorry so you're gonna break it is what he's saying it's that bad he's gonna
42:58break
42:59it can we just talk about the uh minxie yes very desirable quite good lovely patina new new tires
43:08brand new brand new tires somewhere between three and three and a half so 603 and a half yeah yeah
43:15have i made a hundred quid did i not say at the very beginning you might be lucky to break
43:19even
43:19actually you've surpassed yourself and made a hundred quid i have i mean and i've got me chrome and you've
43:25got your chrome you've got your chrome everyone's happy everyone's happy but i've got to tell you
43:29though this was three and a half and now it's fine oh dear yeah well next time i think we'll
43:39take a torch
43:40under a quid pro oh my god it's just so depressing all that work very well
43:47you
