Discover how the upcoming Fable reboot by Playground Games is taking a unique narrative approach by including mockumentary-style interviews, a technique directly inspired by the beloved comedy series 'The Office'.
Transcript
00:00UK-based game maker Playground Games is really, really leaning into the Fable series' signature
00:05British whip, even going as far as copying the mockumentary-style interviews seen in
00:09countless comedy shows like The Office.
00:11Cast your mind back and you'll remember the Fable trailer that follows a giant version
00:15of Richard Ayoade while he sits down in an interview and waxes lyrical about the nature
00:19of heroes.
00:20Another has Matt King doing the same as an ex-hero who's been forced out of retirement.
00:24That wasn't just a cheeky quirk used to advertise the upcoming reboot, however.
00:27You've maybe seen in our trailers that we have a sort of mockumentary-interview-style.
00:31Playground Games chief Ralph Fulton told Xbox Wire, I think a lot of people assume we just
00:35did that for those trailers, but it's actually a device we use throughout the game.
00:39Fulton explains it was something the team kind of nicked from The Office, a workplace British
00:43comedy that had its dry employees awkwardly talking to the camera.
00:47It was of course famously adapted into The Office US, I've never seen it in games before, but
00:55it allows you a way to really neatly tell a joke or drop a little bit of character detail
00:59in a way that would feel really clunky in a dialogue, but suddenly feels entirely natural
01:03when you do it to camera, the studio head confirmed.
01:06We're all for seeing big budget games take wild swings like this, and we're even more
01:10excited to see how it'll all work in the final game when it launches later this year.
01:13I'll see you next time.
01:13Let's get started.
