The Sports Junkies break down the latest Washington Commanders news.
Transcript
00:00And, of course, we're talking NFL draft all week.
00:02We're just three days away from the first round.
00:05We're going to have a watch party, draft night,
00:07with the Junkies and Grant and Danny's at Honor Brewing in Loudoun.
00:12Cool spot.
00:1442-604 Trade West Drive in Sterling.
00:17We've been there before.
00:18It's been a while.
00:19So come join us.
00:20We'll be on the air live 630 to 8.
00:24Grant and Danny on after us as we get ready for the Commander's first round pick.
00:28Right now, they are slated to pick number seven.
00:31The question is, will they trade down to acquire more picks?
00:35They only have six picks in this draft.
00:37They don't have a second rounder.
00:39I know about a week ago, Daniel Jeremiah, one of the top NFL draft guys,
00:44put out a mock where he had the Commander's trading with the Jets,
00:49in which case they would move from 7 to 16 in the first round,
00:53acquire the 44th pick and the 103rd pick.
00:56There seems to be increasing buzz that they might trade down.
01:01Well, here's a guy, Charlie Campbell, who's a draft analyst at Walter Football.
01:06And if you believe his bio, of course, we all know about Walter Football.
01:11That site's been around for a long time.
01:12He claims he led all NFL media for mock draft accuracy in 24, 22, 19, and 17.
01:19He says he came in second in 21 and 25.
01:21So, he's kind of all in the upper echelon there, if you believe it.
01:26And why not?
01:28He tweeted yesterday afternoon, speaking with some league sources today,
01:35Washington badly wants to trade down from the seventh overall pick.
01:39Now, who knows what's true or not?
01:41He says the Commanders are without a second round pick.
01:43If they could trade down, a top target for Washington would be LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane.
01:49I don't think most think he'll go in that top six or seven.
01:53And so, if you could trade down maybe to 10, 11, 12, maybe you could still get him.
01:56He's considered by many the top corner in the draft.
01:59That might be a move.
02:01Now, everyone knows Mendoza is going to go one, right?
02:05It appears from the people that I've listened to have been reading, and I even asked Gemini.
02:12I went for it again.
02:14You went with the AI.
02:14I went for Gemini.
02:16I said, give me the best consensus top 10 based on all the available current online mocks.
02:24The projected top 10 consensus, they all include Mendoza 1, Reese, Bailey, Love, Stiles, Downs, and Tate.
02:36That's seven guys right there, right?
02:38So, if Mendoza goes 1, and there's nobody else involved, like no offensive linemen,
02:44some people have maybe Spencer Feneau maybe going in there.
02:47Was there another guy, Mauga, whatever, whatever his name is, Francis Mauga from Miami.
02:51Miami, right.
02:52If those guys, then you really might have some choices.
02:55But if no offensive linemen goes, you're right now, right now, you're guaranteed to get either
03:02Reese, Bailey, Love, Stiles, Downs, or Tate, or even Delaney.
03:07Right.
03:08You're guaranteed to get one of those.
03:09Sure.
03:10And if two of those offensive linemen go, you might really have something on your hands.
03:16And then maybe you do trade down a couple picks.
03:18It appears that the Jets are still the team that would be most interested.
03:25Apparently, they're infatuated with Carnell Tate.
03:29They're infatuated with them.
03:30They want to have them, and they'd be able to get them.
03:33I think in all likelihood, they'll be able to get them at seven.
03:36Do you like the idea of trading down?
03:38I'm going to say I do.
03:39Depends on who's available.
03:39When we talked about this potential trade with the Jets.
03:43Yeah, you like that.
03:44I like it, and here's why, and we'd love to hear from people, 1-800-636-1067.
03:48If you're a Commanders fan, you'd be upset if they trade out a number seven, and I'm going
03:54to say a mid-round, a mid-first-round pick.
03:57Okay?
03:58I wouldn't want to trade the number seven pick, and then the top pick that they have is number
04:0230.
04:03I wouldn't want that.
04:05No, I think the Jets are likely.
04:06They pick, like, 16.
04:08Is that correct?
04:08That's 16.
04:08Correct.
04:09But if you give me a top 20, I think you can still get a really good receiver, because
04:16it seems like people talk about Tate, they talk about Tyson, they talk about Lemon, they
04:21talk about Cooper, and Concepcion's another one.
04:24So I think if you believe there's not much separation in those top receivers, and you see
04:31different scouts and different draft experts kind of juggling those five guys, it does
04:38seem mostly, most of them have Tate number one out of those five receivers, but you see
04:43a lot of differences there.
04:45I think if you get a top 20 back, and you add a second-round pick, and potentially a fourth
04:52-round
04:52pick, I think it would be worth it if you're going receiver.
04:56It depends.
04:58If Jeremiah is available, I don't think I'm trading out.
05:00Because what they did in free agency allows them to go offense.
05:03Yeah.
05:04It does.
05:05I just, I wouldn't want to go further down than about 16, though, because I think once
05:10you get down to 17, 18, 20, 22, I just don't think you're getting that impact player that
05:15you could get in the top 15, especially if a guy like Reuben Bain slips a little bit.
05:20I know he's got some off-the-field issues going on.
05:23He might be a great target if he slips.
05:25But he could slip.
05:26Correct.
05:27And then what if down slipped?
05:29What if down slips down?
05:31And maybe it's not just 16.
05:32Maybe it's 14.
05:34Are you willing, though, to go?
05:35Maybe it's not a lock that the Jets trade up.
05:38Maybe it's someone else inside of the Jets that trades up.
05:40Are you willing to go through this draft without drafting a wide receiver before the third round?
05:48Because if they take Sonny Stiles at number seven, and they stay with what they have, they're not
05:57drafting a receiver until the third round, which is what they did with McCaffrey, right?
06:02Yeah.
06:03Yep.
06:03I would think that...
06:04They took Lane in the fourth round.
06:05I would think that I would be okay with it because I think you can still get a decent receiver
06:11in the third round.
06:13But if you're going to get a stud at seven, I think that outweighs whatever you're going to get, you
06:18know, later in the draft.
06:19And if you don't want to get a defensive stud at seven, and it's all about acquiring picks that are
06:26okay, I just don't want to go deeper than about 16.
06:29I don't want to go 18, 20, 22.
06:33I'd rather go top 15.
06:35All right.
06:35Let's bang out some of these calls here.
06:36I'm willing to do the trade.
06:38Like, I don't have to stay at number seven.
06:40What about you?
06:42I think it would be spectacularly stupid, personally, to make a trade today.
06:47I have to do it on the clock.
06:49Well, sure.
06:49I have to see how the board...
06:50But the Giants just did it.
06:52But I wouldn't do that.
06:54I have to see how the board plays out.
06:55If one of my guys is available...
06:57The Giants, though, traded a disgruntled player.
06:59I know.
07:00I understand.
07:01And got a pick as they are rebooting the team with a new coach.
07:04Right.
07:04There's a reason why they did it.
07:05But if you're asking me in a vacuum, trade down.
07:08No, I wouldn't trade down right now today.
07:10Would I trade down right now?
07:11Let's say the Jets came to me right now.
07:12I would say no.
07:13Call me when we're on the clock.
07:15Because if a couple offensive linemen go, and now I have some choices there for some of these other guys,
07:20then I might.
07:21But if they're at seven, and Tate and Jordan Tyson are still on the board, and maybe one of these
07:28other stud defensive players...
07:29Well, certainly Delane might still be there.
07:31Delane might still be there.
07:32And a team really wants to jump up to get a Tate or Tyson, then I would be fine with
07:38it.
07:38But I don't want to lose out on both Tate and Tyson if I slip down, if all those defensive
07:45guys are gone.
07:45All right.
07:46Let's bang on to this call.
07:46You know what I mean?
07:47I want at least one of those studs.
07:49But if you drop down to 16, then Tate's probably gone.
07:53Tyson's probably gone.
07:54All those stud defensive players are probably gone.
07:56You can get a receiver.
07:58At 16, you'll be able to get a receiver.
08:00You can.
08:01It might not be your favorite, but it's going to be a highly rated wide receiver.
08:05True, but it might be like the fourth receiver on your board.
08:08And I don't know if that's worth trading out and just getting a second rounder and a mid-round pick.
08:13That's just my opinion.
08:14Let's go to Chris in Brandywine.
08:17Chris, what's up, buddy?
08:18You're on with the Junkies.
08:21Hey, good morning, gentlemen.
08:22I'm of the belief that we do not trade out if there's a blue chip player on the board.
08:27If there's thousands on the board, if there's thousands on the board.
08:31And, I mean, even Tate, if they're blue chip number one in their position, just take the player.
08:37Because we have enough Jags on the team as it is.
08:40We only have, like, one or two blue chips on the team.
08:43Right.
08:43I kind of agree with that.
08:44And we need to get all pros, not just regular guys.
08:47I kind of agree with that.
08:48All right.
08:48Thank you, Chris.
08:49Appreciate it, buddy.
08:50Let's go to Tony in Clinton.
08:54Tony, what's up, buddy?
08:55You're on with the Junkies.
08:57Hey, what's up, fellas?
08:58Look, man.
08:58I'm tired of this quality player stuff.
09:01This quantity stuff, man.
09:02And, listen, we don't have – name the playmaker on our team.
09:06Right.
09:06Like, name the guy that's going to take the ball from five yards to 75 yards in the blink.
09:11Or the guy that's going to make an impact play.
09:13We don't have him.
09:13Well, I think Terry can.
09:15Terry showed that two years ago.
09:18I mean, okay.
09:19But we need, like, an absolute playmaker.
09:22And so, like, stay at seven.
09:24Take the stud.
09:25Forget that quantity.
09:26Which stud do you want?
09:29The best player available.
09:30Because they need everything.
09:31Best player available offensively?
09:35No.
09:36Either side.
09:36We need both sides of the ball.
09:37So, it's like, if Jeremiah Love, if Tate is there, then fine.
09:41If any of those defense – in that top seven, it's one of them places in, like, a draft
09:45where you're going to get somebody a stud and blue chip at his position no matter what.
09:50And there isn't a position on our team where we can't use it.
09:52Right.
09:52So, it's like, if you're going to have an instant impact player at his position, you take it.
09:57Forget trading down to 16 and get somebody that's going to develop.
10:00And which comes just for the sake of having a second rounder who you don't know who's
10:03going to be there, man.
10:04If you know you got a guaranteed guy on paper that's going to be an instant plug-and-play
10:08dude that has the potential to be great, don't overthink it, man.
10:12Take him because we need it.
10:13I tend to agree with that.
10:14Right now, again, Mendoza's going one.
10:17That means we are guaranteed to get either Reese, Bailey, Love, Stiles, Downs, Tate, or
10:24Delane.
10:24I believe pretty much all those guys, top-ranked guys, at their position.
10:27Yep.
10:28Guaranteed to get one of those guys.
10:30Correct.
10:30You can't miss.
10:31Correct.
10:31So, I'm not sure –
10:32Well, you can miss if they don't work out.
10:33They might be, yeah, right.
10:34We're going to have Daniel Kelly, the former NFL scout from the Jets on at 8 o'clock.
10:38He doesn't think Sonny Stiles is going to be –
10:40He hates everybody.
10:42He's entertaining.
10:43I can't wait to have him on, but he hates everybody.
10:45Yeah, I want to hear what he says about guys like Tate and Tyson and Lemon, the receivers
10:50that could be there.
10:51All right, let's go to Jack.
10:53Jack, what's up, buddy?
10:54You're all with the junkies.
10:56What's up, man?
10:57I love you guys.
10:58Thanks, man.
10:59Like I was saying a second ago, I do not want them to trade out a number seven because
11:04there are some studs that both offense and defense and, of course, the Tate, the receiver.
11:12But to get to the core of what we're talking about, the only way that I would trade out
11:17a seven is that if everybody is off the board, however, if someone at the last moment would
11:24offer them some juicy, you know, gym, you know, they'd have to make that decision right
11:30within 10 minutes, but overall, just like y'all were saying, you know, these guys are
11:36a once-in-a-lifetime play with most of them, and we need some strong push on defense to
11:44go after their quarterback and put the pressure on them because I don't care how good a quarterback
11:49you got.
11:50If you're running for your life, you ain't going to make the pass.
11:54You know, it's not going to happen.
11:56So, the only way, like I said, I would trade back is if they were all gone and something
12:02amazing was offered to us.
12:04All right.
12:05Appreciate it.
12:06So, of those guys, the one that I've heard that there seems to be the most questions about,
12:13and it's just in terms of how big the upside is, is Tate, right?
12:18So, Reese, Bailey, Love, Styles, Downs, most people think they're going to be pretty good
12:24players.
12:24Most people think.
12:26They think Tate will be good, too, but most people are making the argument that he was
12:30never a one at Ohio State, which doesn't really mean anything because it's Ohio State.
12:33And if you look at the history of their receivers, they've got a bunch of number twos and threes.
12:37They go out and they're still.
12:38They're impact players.
12:39But for whatever reason, that is tainting him.
12:41So, if you take that and just say people are correct on him because he doesn't have outstanding
12:45size.
12:46He doesn't have outstanding speed.
12:47He's very good, but he doesn't really jump out of you at any one thing.
12:50Got great hands.
12:51Got great hands.
12:52Maybe that's the best.
12:54If you take Tate out of it and you swap in Delane, wouldn't you be happy with any of
13:02those guys?
13:03Delane, Downs, Styles, Love, Bailey, Reese?
13:06Of course.
13:07You're guaranteed to get that.
13:09You're guaranteed to get any of those guys.
13:11So, what if a team...
13:13We've never had one.
13:14I know, but what we're kind of tossing around is there's this growing buzz that they want
13:20to trade down to acquire more picks because they don't have many picks.
13:26I think it depends on who they really like and if they're still available and if they
13:30think he's going to be available when they trade down.
13:32Right.
13:33Under my scenario, which was the Daniel Jeremiah mock trade down to 16, at 16, they should
13:41be able to get Hooper or Lemon, one of those receivers.
13:45Now, you're missing out on an elite playmaker on defense, which is attractive because we
13:50know they don't have that.
13:51I mean, two years ago, I would make an argument that Luvu was that guy.
13:54Last year was kind of a down year for Luvu.
13:57And we'll see what Owe becomes and, you know, these guys that they've added.
14:03But man, if you could draft a first-round wide receiver that you feel good about, you
14:08fill that hole and you don't have to worry about the Brandon Ayuk possibility because
14:12that just seems to keep going and going and it might be until August until you find out
14:16now with Brandon Ayuk.
14:18Yeah.
14:2016, I just think that's as far as I would go.
14:24What if the Chiefs at nine really liked the lane or they liked Tate or whoever, and they
14:30want to jump up just two spots and you could still acquire a second rounder?
14:34Oh, I think I would do that.
14:35Yeah, because then you can still get one of the guys that you're targeting and you're
14:41picking up an extra pick.
14:41Hold on.
14:42Let me see.
14:42One, two, three.
14:43Now, maybe you're not getting a second rounder, but maybe you're getting a third rounder.
14:46I would assume you're getting a second if you're allowing a team to trade up in the
14:50first.
14:50If you throw Tyson in there, I'm just so scared about Tyson's health.
14:54He's almost like foobar for me for first round, but I know people are going to take
14:59him.
15:00Yeah, I wouldn't worry about that.
15:01If you throw Tyson in there, you're guaranteed to get somebody great at nine.
15:04I mean, Tate had some injuries too.
15:07I mean, guys get hurt.
15:08I don't think it's going to be.
15:10He just seemed to have the chronic stuff more.
15:12I don't know.
15:13I would take him.
15:14I get what the previous caller said about quality versus quantity.
15:17And of course I want quality, but this is a team that needs more players.
15:23And so it just, it'll be frustrating.
15:27I think if you draft, let's say Sonny styles at number seven, and then you got to wait all
15:32the way to third round and you know, you still need a receiver.
15:35Right.
15:35And you know, you need to still address the defense.
15:38Yep.
15:39You're right.
15:40All right.
15:40But maybe they're okay.
15:42Maybe they're okay with going into the season with the receiving core that they have right
15:51now, because two seasons ago, Terry didn't have a great number two either.
15:56You know, they were two years ago when they made the NFC championship game, it was guys
16:01like OZ, you know, contributing, Noah Brown contributing.
16:06They're going to take a crack at one.
16:07If they don't get one the first round, I'm convinced they'll take a crack at one later
16:10and we'll just see how it, and then they'll sign some free aid.
16:12You never know.
16:13That could pop.
16:14It's not something you could rely on.
16:15I mean, there's still some bigger names that are available.
16:16They're going to add some pieces.
16:18There's the guys like Diggs and Ayuk and Jennings.
16:20Those guys are still available.
16:21You never know.
16:22Let's go to Jason in Gaithersburg.
16:24Jason, what's up, buddy?
16:25Y'all with the Jumps.
16:26Hey, good morning, guys.
16:27Hey, man.
16:28What's up?
16:29Hey, guys.
16:30Yeah, stay at number seven and select Jordan Tyson.
16:32I know about the injuries.
16:34I've heard about it.
16:35The collarbone doesn't really bother me too much that happens in sports.
16:39Yeah, I agree.
16:40He has a hamstring.
16:42That's what bothers me.
16:43Yeah, he has a hamstring thing, but he's coming into his own.
16:46He's coming into his own, and they just dropped his workout tape from yesterday.
16:51I saw.
16:52He made that catch in the end zone.
16:53I'm just like, holy smokes.
16:56That's Terry's successor right there.
16:58So, I don't know.
16:59I think he has the best potential, the highest upside AP swing for the fences.
17:04Let's go get Jordan Tyson.
17:06All right.
17:07Thank you, Jason.
17:08Appreciate it.
17:081-800-636-1067.
17:12The NFL draft is three days away.
17:14We're going to be hosting a draft party at Honor Brewing in Sterling.
17:18Hope you can join us.
17:19The question is, there's this buzz that the commanders want to trade down.
17:24Are you on board with that, or do you want the commanders to stay at number seven and take
17:29the best player on the board?
17:311-800-636-1067.
17:34More of your calls next, here on the Junkies.
