00:00Let me say good morning to Kevin Sheehan, host of the Kevin Sheehan Show from 10 a.m. to 1
00:05p.m. on the Team 980.
00:08Kevin, what's up? Good morning.
00:10What's up, boys? How you doing?
00:12What's up, Kev?
00:13Great. How are you? Just waking up?
00:15No. Sitting here just waiting for you guys to call.
00:18He's probably... What time do you get up?
00:19So excited about it.
00:20What time do you get up? About 6.30? 7?
00:23I still haven't been able to shake, you know, what you guys still go through.
00:28So I... The difference is I don't have to get out of bed when I wake up at 4.25.
00:34Are you scrolling, though? Are you doom-scrolling?
00:36Yeah, of course.
00:38Yeah.
00:38It's the worst thing to have that phone.
00:40It is. It is.
00:42If I had any discipline, it would be in the next room, but I don't, and it's right next to
00:46my head,
00:46and I pick it up in the middle of the night, and I rot my brain further.
00:50Yeah.
00:52All right. So first of all, we've got to get your comments.
00:54I know we've seen some of it on social media.
00:56I'm not sure if I listened to you live talking about it, but your overall impressions of what was unveiled
01:01yesterday.
01:03I mean, it looks like our team again, you know, and that's...
01:08We saw it last year with the throwbacks against Seattle, Denver, and Dallas, and...
01:14I mean, look, February 2, 2022, it felt like an expansion team replaced the team that I had rooted for
01:21my entire life,
01:21and I have felt that way ever since, this is a really, really strong step because they can't do what
01:28I'm sure they know would be the home run move
01:31because I don't think the league will, you know, allow it.
01:33I don't think the name Redskins is ever coming back, and, you know, they could have done this back in
01:392022,
01:40just, you know, kept the uniforms, or they didn't have to change the color scheme and the uniform look,
01:46and I think what was most significant is that Commanders isn't on any of those jerseys.
01:52Definitely.
01:53You know, they understand how off-putting it is for a significant percentage of the fan base,
02:00and by the way, I don't think they like it either, but it's a hard thing to fix, but I
02:05like them.
02:05I'm not a uniform guy, really, but it looked like my team.
02:12Yeah, this is great.
02:14The thing is, is I feel a little bit defensive for them in the sense that other teams have changed
02:20their color scheme slightly,
02:21and there hasn't been the blowback.
02:23I feel like the blowback was so big because we all hate the name.
02:27You know what I mean?
02:28And they were forced to do it.
02:30Yeah, and so that's where I think, you know, like we've mentioned,
02:32so many of the Niners have changed their colors slightly, the Buccaneers have, the Seahawks,
02:37like other teams have done it, and there isn't, but man, there's no doubt at this point
02:43that was an obvious move, and they made it.
02:45So tip of the cap to them.
02:47Give us your take, Kevin, on how you feel like there's still a window to the old logo,
02:52because that doesn't make sense to me.
02:55Yeah, it doesn't make sense to me either, because there was never anything controversial about the logo,
03:01about the Blackie Wetzel logo.
03:03It was not, you know, it wasn't dictionary defined as racist or insensitive or pejorative.
03:09None of that.
03:10The only thing that makes sense to me is that it doesn't necessarily tie directly to the current team name,
03:17although I think you could stretch the current team name into making it into, you know,
03:22the head of some Native American tribe, a commander.
03:25But yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if they start to work that back into rotation somehow,
03:34maybe down the road when they open up the new stadium, maybe it ends up back on the helmet.
03:38I mean, I have no idea, but there's nothing wrong with that logo, other than it's not, you know,
03:45a natural tie to the team name, and maybe they just don't want, you know, a lot of Native American
03:52imagery.
03:52I don't know.
03:53Do you think if they're willing to do that, would they maybe, like, float a trial balloon
03:59by putting it as, like, a shoulder accent on one of the uniforms, like, as a warm-up to maybe
04:05it winding up back on the helmet?
04:07I don't know. I'm just thinking out loud here as far as utilizing that logo.
04:12I'm not, I don't think about those things in terms of uniforms.
04:15I'm not into the, you know, deep dive on, you know, shoulder stripes and helmet colors and the whole thing.
04:23I mean, helmet stripes, et cetera.
04:24But I do think that the logo could get worked back into some part of the branding.
04:29Have you bought any commander's gear yourself?
04:33Never.
04:33You haven't?
04:34Your team never on commander's gear?
04:36Why is that?
04:37You are such a big fan.
04:39Well, not.
04:40I mean, I'm just not a fan of, I don't have the same level of passion that I used to
04:46have.
04:46The name for me was definitely a big deal.
04:50It still is to this day.
04:51I don't feel the emotional, you know, sort of attachment overall to the team that I once did.
04:58But, you know, part of that was sort of in process just because of all the losing and all of
05:05the shenanigans during the Snyder years.
05:07I mean, I think a lot of people got chased away even before the name was lost.
05:12But I'll never purchase anything.
05:15I can't imagine purchasing anything with commanders.
05:17I have purchased a few things with the W on it.
05:21I don't mind the W.
05:23Oh, that's okay.
05:24I don't mind the W.
05:24That's what I meant.
05:25That's what he meant.
05:26That's what he meant.
05:26So you just have a line of demarcation where you...
05:30With commanders.
05:30With commanders.
05:31Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:32Okay.
05:33Yeah, exactly.
05:34Got it.
05:34Anything that represents Washington is good.
05:36But I wouldn't...
05:37Yeah.
05:37Exactly.
05:38Yeah.
05:38Okay.
05:39So you're just like the current ownership where they still have the W, but they've basically delisted commanders off of
05:48the uniforms.
05:50Pakes, that was meaningful.
05:52Oh, I agree.
05:53I mean, that tells you...
05:54That was calculated.
05:55I mean, it's not like it wasn't obvious already, but they've had to deal with this since they acquired the
06:02team.
06:03Now, it hasn't hurt the valuation.
06:04You know, the sale of the Lakers and the soon-to-be sale of the Seahawks and anybody else.
06:10I mean, that team is now worth probably $8 billion, not $6 billion.
06:14But it's been a challenge in terms of, you know, revenues, etc.
06:20It's been a major stumbling block for them.
06:22And there's not an easy answer if you can't bring Redskins back.
06:25There just isn't an easy answer.
06:27But I thought it was significant that it wasn't on anything.
06:30And it just reinforces that they understand it's a problem, too.
06:35So, Kevin, we were just talking about Daniel Jeremiah's latest mock draft where he has the commanders trading to $16,
06:41so the Jets would move up to $7, and the commanders would require a second-round pick and a fourth
06:47-round pick.
06:47Would you be for that or against it?
06:53So, Jets, you said, traded up to $7?
06:55Yeah.
06:56Jets, $7.
06:57Commanders would get $16, $44, and $103 would be the return.
07:03Yeah, so they pick up a second-rounder and a early fourth.
07:08Yeah, I mean, I'm assuming the math makes sense based on those draft, you know, value charts.
07:14But, yeah, I mean, I think the more – here's what you don't want to do, I don't think, is
07:18pass on a player that you think is generational if there aren't going to be any left after number seven.
07:24You know, it doesn't mean they're going to be right, but it's what they think.
07:28You know, this draft is, you know, two-thirds wrong for everybody involved in it.
07:33But the idea of that you're going to be wrong two-thirds of the time means the more picks, the
07:38better, because you're not really sure which one out of the three is going to hit.
07:44But if they really think that, you know, a David Bailey, if he were to drop, or a Reese, or
07:51a Stiles, or a Caleb Downs, or a Jeremiah Love is generational, they shouldn't pass on it.
07:58I think a lot of our fans would go back and take Chris Alave right now instead of trading back
08:03with the Saints, or take J.J. Watt instead of trading back for Ryan Kerrigan in 2011.
08:10So you have to be careful from that standpoint.
08:12But, yeah, I think in general, the more picks, the better.
08:15And, Kevin, do you think that Adam Peters –
08:17Who did they have him taking at 16?
08:20They didn't really – oh, actually, who did they have?
08:23Was that one of the receivers?
08:24Jeremiah.
08:25Yeah.
08:26I'm going to have to double check.
08:26We've got to look at that again.
08:28We were just kind of looking at the traits scenario.
08:29Is there one guy, if he's there, you can't pass up on him, no matter what?
08:33At seven, yeah.
08:35Bailey would be the one for me.
08:38He would be the one, but I don't think he lasts until seven.
08:42Hey, do you think Adam Peters, can he afford the risk of drafting Reuben Bain in the wake of these
08:48driving accusations that have come to light recently?
08:51I know that teams have been informed about it.
08:53Yeah, they knew of this news a couple months ago, but he just came to light publicly.
08:57Part of drafting is mitigating risk.
09:00I view him as just a risky guy now.
09:04Yeah.
09:06That's a big thing.
09:08Like, did he learn from it?
09:09Was it – you know, does he still not necessarily understand what he did?
09:13Look, the short arms are the reason that he was going to drop anyway if he started to drop.
09:19But if you watched him – and I know, Jason, you didn't, and I think you guys did too –
09:23he was a dominant, dominant college football player.
09:27Or, like, the one that you couldn't take your eyes off every time Miami was on the field defensively.
09:35So, yeah, I don't know how he'll get evaluated because of that.
09:38But the short arms were already going to knock him off a first-round board for a lot of teams.
09:43Are you against Jeremiah Love because they went out and signed a couple of RBs and the running back room
09:49looks pretty decent right now?
09:50I mean, there's no superstar, but it's pretty deep.
09:53But if Love is there and all those other good defensive players are gone, if they're not going to trade
10:00out of seven, are you okay with drafting Love?
10:03I mean, I don't know anything, just like nobody knows anything when it comes to this thing.
10:07But I don't think he's B. John Robinson or Saquon Barkley or Christian McCaffrey.
10:13So I wouldn't take him that high because of the positional – lack of positional value.
10:19I know that every draft expert believes that he's in that category.
10:23I think he's going to be really good, but I don't think he's that, you know, tremendous elite, like kind
10:31of all-time, you know, level back.
10:34So I wouldn't take him at seven, but if they did it, he's going to be good, and he'd be
10:39a tremendous addition.
10:40The running back room wouldn't have anybody that resembles him in it right now, I don't think.
10:45Yeah, it's true.
10:47I think the running back room looks pretty good now, and I think we were just talking to John Kime.
10:53Couldn't win with those guys, but if Peters and DQ look at Love and go, man, he's just a game
11:00-changer, like they said about Jaden,
11:02then I could see them taking him.
11:05Yeah, I mean, I could definitely see it.
11:07At this point, I still feel like Ayuk's going to end up here, and I'm all about it.
11:14Now, whether he's any good or not, I have no idea, but I'm willing to roll the dice.
11:18If they're kind of convinced through the grapevine, is that enough, though?
11:23Wait, who are you talking about?
11:24Brandon Ayuk.
11:25Yeah, Brandon Ayuk.
11:26I'm still convinced, ultimately, he's going to end up here, because he gave up so much money, seemingly, to do
11:32so.
11:34Yeah, I mean, I don't know that he gave up the money for that specific reason.
11:38I mean, it's idiotic what he did.
11:40I mean, the judgment alone of basically tossing away $35 million is crazy.
11:44It's insane.
11:45But I'm kind of with you, too.
11:47I just kind of feel like he's going to end up here.
11:49And the 49ers, I guess, have no incentive to do anything with him until August 31st.
11:55They don't owe him any money until September 1st.
11:58Would Adam Peters and Dan Quinn be willing to wait until then?
12:03Because you don't give up compensation for him.
12:07You have to pick him up off waivers and then totally give him a prove-it deal.
12:14Right, but then is that enough?
12:16Or do you have-the thing I hate about, like, oh, we'll get a receiver in the third or fourth
12:20round?
12:20Well, okay.
12:21You're more likely going to get another, you know, like a Luke McCaffrey.
12:24He's a nice player, but not who you need.
12:27You know what I mean?
12:27You need impactful players.
12:30Right.
12:31Yeah, I mean, they need-it starts with defense.
12:35They've added a bunch of players.
12:37You can't go wrong drafting more defensive players if you really like them.
12:41They were so bad defensively last year that, I mean, even if everybody's healthy next year,
12:50which obviously they weren't in 25 on offense, you know, you're not going to win 12 games again
12:56with that kind of a defense.
12:57So, I think the offense, if you improve defensively, is going to be good enough as long as it's healthy.
13:05I mean, the reason they weren't any good last year is that their best players didn't play.
13:09So, I'm with you, like, on another weapon for Jaden, but if they went defense-defense
13:17throughout, I wouldn't have a problem with that.
13:20They've got to get better on that side of the ball.
13:22Joined by Kevin Sheehan, host of the Kevin Sheehan Show, 10-1 right here on the team, 980.
13:28I want to just do rapid fire for you on three questions, okay?
13:32Yep.
13:33Kevin Sheehan, was the Wizards' season a success?
13:37Yes.
13:38Yes.
13:38Will Ovi be back?
13:41No.
13:43Next Thursday, the Commanders will draft who?
13:48Sonny Stiles.
13:49Well, that'd be a good pick.
13:51Love those.
13:52All right, Kevin, we appreciate your time, man.
13:54Thanks, as always.
13:55People can listen, of course, on the team, 980, 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. today.
14:00Thanks, buddy.
14:01Great stuff.
