01:48Morning, Sid.
01:50Oh, hi, Jim. Morning.
01:51Say, it's barely light out.
01:53It's awful early for you to be up and around, ain't it?
01:55Mm-hmm. Tom was yawning to sleep.
01:57I could even put a pillow over my head, but I could still hear him.
02:00Wrong place to put it.
02:02Where should I put it?
02:03Over his head.
02:05Oh.
02:09I wonder what's troubling him so much.
02:26I dreamt that Injun Joe was coming for me and Huck because he found out we saw him do it,
02:31and he will come after us if we ever tell anyone.
02:33What we saw last night wasn't no dream.
02:37Injun Joe murdered Dr. Robinson.
02:40Oh.
02:47Now it's time to settle the score.
02:49Huh?
02:50Go.
02:59I think I better get it.
03:00Nobody crosses Injun Joe.
03:05Hmm?
03:09Hmm?
03:11Hmm?
03:12Hmm?
03:13Hmm?
03:14Hmm?
03:14Hey, wake up, Tom.
03:15It's only a dream.
03:18Hmm?
03:23You awake?
03:24Mm-hmm.
03:26Listen, Tom.
03:26Where'd you and Huck go last night?
03:28What?
03:30Tell me, Tom.
03:31I won't tell nobody.
03:33I woke up real late and you were gone.
03:35Where'd you go?
03:38Look, I promise not to tell Aunt Polly or cousin Mary.
03:42I won't tell anybody at all.
03:44I swear I won't.
03:45Couldn't sleep so I went for a walk and then I came back.
03:58Hmm.
03:59Is something wrong, Tom?
04:00No.
04:02Seems to me you don't have much of an appetite this morning.
04:05Not hungry, that's all.
04:07Hmm.
04:09You usually eat more than any of us.
04:11Why, what's the matter, Tom?
04:13Are you sick?
04:13No, I feel fine.
04:15Sure, I'm glad you ain't sick because today is the day you promised me to go fishing down
04:19at the pond.
04:19What time you want to go?
04:21Go where?
04:22Fishing.
04:23You said that you'd take me fishing today down at the pond.
04:26We'll go tomorrow.
04:27You forgot about it, didn't you?
04:29Mm-mm.
04:31Just don't feel like going today.
04:33Well, if you ain't sick, what is wrong with you?
04:36Nothing.
04:37Nothing.
04:38It's obvious to all of us you're not yourself, Tom.
04:40I'm going to get an appointment for you to see Dr. Mitchell.
04:45Yes, Mary.
04:46Perhaps you'd better.
04:48Don't need a doctor, Aunt Polly.
04:50We'll let the doctor be the judge of that.
04:53The truth is that you don't like Dr. Mitchell very much, do you, Tom?
04:57Not particularly.
04:58Then I'll just make the appointment with Dr. Robinson instead.
05:01Uh, Mary, I can't do that.
05:04I want to see Dr. Mitchell.
05:05So I'll never see Dr. Robinson again.
05:07I mean, uh, Dr. Mitchell will do fine.
05:15Now, I know you made plans for today, but I think we have a real problem here.
05:19What is it?
05:20I'm quite worried about your brother.
05:22I've never seen him act so strangely before.
05:25Tell you what, Sid, I'll be working in Dr. Mitchell's office.
05:28If Tom starts acting up again, see that he comes in.
05:31I will, Mary.
05:32Well then, see you later.
05:33Bye, Mary.
05:38Poor Dr. Robinson.
05:40No one will ever make another appointment with him, that's for sure.
05:43Cause right now he's lying stone cold in the graveyard, deader in a doornail.
05:48Engine Joe did him in.
05:49And if I don't tell somebody soon, I'm gonna bust.
05:52But I can't tell nobody or I'll drop dead right on the spot.
05:56We do solemnly swear we will keep mum about this
05:59and we wish we may drop down dead in our tracks if we ever tell and rot.
06:04Cross my heart, spit in the ocean, hope to die.
06:07I swear I'll keep this promise till the end of time.
06:09Me too.
06:11What am I gonna do?
06:13What am I gonna do?
06:16Aww.
06:38Huck was scared as I was and for a mighty good reason.
06:42We'd seen something horrible in the graveyard that night.
06:44And the same thing would happen to us if we was ever found out by Engine Joe.
06:55Smokin's bad for your health.
06:58Huh?
06:58Yeah.
07:03He's a bad and all right.
07:04Bad as they come.
07:06Murder!
07:07Murder!
07:08Help somebody!
07:09I found the body!
07:11It's murder I tell ya!
07:14It's murder!
07:16Go tell the sheriff right away!
07:18It's murder!
07:20Help!
07:21Help!
07:31Sheriff Collins!
07:32Sheriff!
07:34You look like you've just seen a ghost, Mac.
07:36What's wrong?
07:36Sh-Sheriff Collins, someone's been killed down at the cemetery.
07:40Yup.
07:40I found the body myself.
07:42Any idea who it is, Mac?
07:44The man who was killed?
07:44Yes, sir!
07:46It's plain as day!
07:47He was young Dr. Robinson, no doubt about it!
08:06Considering what happened the last time I was at the cemetery, I was almost too scared to go.
08:11But after I heard the body had been found, I just couldn't seem to stay away.
08:17Hey, Pat!
08:18Yes, Sheriff?
08:19Found this next to the body.
08:21Know whose it is?
08:22No.
08:23One of those men will probably know.
08:26Go ask him.
08:26Right.
08:28Anyone know whose knife this is?
08:30Take a look.
08:36It's me!
08:36Huh?
08:40I kinda figured you'd show up.
08:42I ain't the only one.
08:43What?
08:44Look.
08:45Poof!
08:49Do you know what he'd do if he finds out we saw him do it?
08:52Sure do.
08:53Wait a minute.
08:54That's Muff's knife.
08:55Hmm?
08:56You saying this knife belongs to old Muff Potter, the town drunk?
08:59Yeah!
09:00How do you know for sure it's his, Albert?
09:01He was whittling the other day and he showed it to me.
09:04Come on, Albert.
09:05Better go tell Sheriff Collins.
09:07Sheriff?
09:08Albert here recognized the knife.
09:10Says it belonged to the old drunk Muff Potter.
09:13You sure?
09:14It's his all right.
09:15I'm positive.
09:17You know, come to think of it, I saw a Muff this morning down at the river taking a bath.
09:21Huh? A bath? Muff?
09:22He only does that about once a year.
09:24Probably trying to scrub off the blood.
09:27You better go tell the Sheriff.
09:29Sheriff, there's something I gotta tell ya.
09:35Poor Muff.
09:36Poor Muff.
09:36They're gonna jail him.
09:37Reckon so.
09:39Oh, I didn't mean to do it.
09:41I never meant no harm to anybody.
09:45Oh, no.
09:46You won't tell anybody, will you, Joe?
09:54All right, man.
09:56Heave.
09:56A little higher to get her over the rail.
09:59That's the way.
10:01Over here.
10:03Straighten that line.
10:04Bring her down slow.
10:06There you go.
10:09Hey, wake up, Muff.
10:11There's something we gotta talk about.
10:13Come on, Muff.
10:14Wake up.
10:15Yeah.
10:16Now wake up and pay attention, Muff.
10:17What I'm gonna ask you is very important.
10:22Listen carefully.
10:23I want you to answer a few questions, all right?
10:27Work me, Sheriff.
10:30I swear, I ain't no murderer.
10:35Kind of funny that you knew what I was here about without me telling you.
10:39I'm wondering why a man who hasn't been accused starts yelling about how innocent he is.
10:44Tell me the truth, Muff.
10:45Did you do it?
10:49Well, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to take you in, Muff.
11:08Oh, yeah.
11:24Got a few questions for you, Joe.
11:26I'd like to talk to you down in my office.
11:29Getting the ace of spades is bad luck.
11:32Heh.
11:32By somebody.
11:34You know what this is all about.
11:35Well, Sheriff, I suppose that Muff must have told you I was with him and Dr. Robinson out at the
11:40cemetery last night.
11:42You're the only witness, Joe.
11:43I want to know exactly what happened last night.
11:46Well, I wasn't getting very good cards, anyway.
11:50Ah.
11:57It was all working out just the way Injun Joe had planned it.
12:01Since he was the only witness, the Sheriff will ask him what happened that night and Injun Joe will tell
12:06him a bunch of lies.
12:08And every word he says will be another nail in Muff Potter's coffin.
12:15The murder had everybody upset, but Doc Mitchell a lot more than most.
12:20The Sheriff needed an official report about how Dr. Robinson had died, so Doc Mitchell had to take a real
12:25close look at the body.
12:27Reckon it shook him up pretty bad.
12:31Good afternoon, Dr. Mitchell.
12:33Afternoon, Mary.
12:41What a terrible thing.
12:43Indeed it is.
12:46Are you certain it was murder, Dr. Mitchell?
12:49Yes.
12:50He was stabbed with a knife and died instantly.
12:53What a pity he was such a young man.
12:56He was young, and he had great ambitions.
12:58And that's what led to his downfall, I'm afraid.
13:02I don't understand what you mean.
13:04I believe Dr. Robinson was looking to gain a reputation as an expert in the field of pathology.
13:10He needed a body to carry out his research and experiments.
13:14So he opened the grave?
13:16Evidently, Muff Potter and Injun Joe were there to help Dr. Robinson load the body onto a wagon.
13:21Then they were going to take it back to his office, I guess.
13:24And that's when they had the argument.
13:26My goodness, what a pity.
13:29I think when they check Dr. Robinson's records, they'll find that wasn't his first visit out to that graveyard.
13:34Really?
13:35He did it so he could be a better doctor, but I can't say I liked his methods.
13:39I've heard that they arrested Muff Potter.
13:41I can't believe that he'd commit murder.
13:43Muff confessed, said he was so drunk he didn't know what he'd done until he woke up with that knife
13:47in his hand.
13:48He's done several nice things for Tom and a few of the other boys in town.
13:52I can't imagine him hurting anyone.
13:55Hmm.
13:56Yep, always seem harmless enough to me, but I guess you never know.
14:04Well, that's the whole story, Sheriff.
14:07To the best of my memory, that's exactly what happened.
14:19Joe, I want you to read this deposition and make sure it's just the way you told it.
14:23If evidence is right, I'll need you to sign it.
14:26Don't you trust your deputy, Sheriff? He took it down the way I said it, didn't he?
14:30Go on.
14:32Here.
14:33Where do I sign, Sheriff?
14:35Right there.
14:42Of course, you'll have to swear to it in court, so don't leave town until after the trial.
14:46All right, Sheriff.
14:48You'd better go and lock him up, Pat.
14:54You heard him, Muff.
14:57Let's go.
14:59Sorry about this, Muff.
15:01But once you confessed and named me as a witness, I had no choice but to tell him, did I?
15:06That's right, Joe, and I don't hold it against you.
15:09Guess there's no doubt that I'm guilty.
15:11Funny thing is, I don't feel like I killed anybody.
15:13Course you don't.
15:14Why, you couldn't hurt a fly, Muff, unless you were drunk like you were that night.
15:18Now, don't you worry, cause that's exactly what I'll say at the trial.
15:21Well, it wasn't you that done it, it was the liquor.
15:25All right.
15:26Go on inside, Muff.
15:38Oh, God.
15:46Now that everybody heard about what happened, nobody had much of an appetite.
15:51Except, of course, for my brother, Sid.
15:54This sure is good, Aunt Polly.
15:59Ain't nobody else gonna eat?
16:01You don't know what you're missing.
16:02Aunt Polly?
16:03It does look wonderful, Mary, but it's no use.
16:06I just can't eat.
16:07Yes, Mother, I understand.
16:09It's that I'm so upset about what happened to young Dr. Robinson,
16:12I just can't get over it, Mary.
16:14I still find it difficult to believe that such a thing could happen right here in St. Petersburg.
16:19Yes, I feel the same way.
16:21Gosh, Mary.
16:22Lucky for you, Dr. Mitchell wasn't the one who was murdered.
16:25What?
16:26You're talking nonsense, Sid.
16:28What on earth do you mean?
16:29Well, after all, you worked for Dr. Mitchell, right?
16:31And now his practice will be even larger,
16:33cause Dr. Robbins' patients will all be coming to him.
16:36Why, that's a terrible thing to say.
16:38If I didn't know you better, I'd think you had no feelings at all,
16:41judging from the way you're stuffing yourself.
16:44Now take a look at Tom.
16:46He usually eats more than you, but not tonight.
16:49And the reason is that he feels just as badly as we do about what happened to Dr. Robinson.
16:54Isn't that right, Tom?
16:56Uh, yeah.
16:58Tom didn't know about it this morning, and he didn't eat then, either.
17:02Say, that's right, you didn't.
17:04Are you feeling sick? Do you think you might be coming down with something?
17:08I already told you, I'm fine.
17:10It's just that whenever I think about what happened in the graveyard that night, I get...
17:18Now I'll settle the score, Doctor.
17:22No!
17:24I mean...
17:26Guess I'll go to bed. I reckon I could be sick after all.
17:29Told you so.
17:30You haven't touched your dinner. You gotta eat, Tom.
17:33I couldn't keep it down, Aunt Polly.
17:35Huh?
17:35Hey!
17:37Excuse me, everybody.
17:42I have the feeling he's hiding something.
17:45I agree.
17:46It has to be something more than Dr. Robinson's death.
17:50I think we'd better ask Dr. Mitchell to have a look at him.
17:53Take him down to the office tomorrow, will ya?
17:55Alright.
17:57Everybody thinks Muff killed Dr. Robinson, and the worst part is Muff believes it, too.
18:02Ain't no doubt about it.
18:03If me and Huck don't tell the sheriff what really happened, Muff Potter's gonna hang for murder.
18:08I gotta do something.
18:10But what?
18:22By this time, everybody knowed that the reason Injun Joe was at the graveyard that night was to help Doc
18:27Robinson dig up the remains of Hoss Williams.
18:30Round these parts, most folks think that the grave robin's just about as bad as murder, but nobody said nothin'
18:36about that.
18:37It was plain as the nose on your face.
18:40Me and Huck weren't the only ones afraid of Injun Joe.
18:56Poor old Muff Potter.
18:58I felt like it was all my fault.
19:00He was sittin' in that jail on account of me.
19:02I just had to do something to make him feel better.
19:05And I guess Huck was thinkin' the same way.
19:07Cause he showed up just around the same time I did.
19:11Good evening, Sheriff.
19:13Huck!
19:13Evening, Pat.
19:14Oh, uh, be sure to finish up that report.
19:16I want it on my desk in the morning.
19:18Yes, sir.
19:18Good morning, Pat.
19:59Evening, Muff.
20:02Sheriff just left, and I'm going to catch me some shut-eye.
20:05I'll be back to check on you in a couple of hours.
20:07If there's anything you need, now's the time to tell me.
20:09I sure could use a drink, Pat.
20:11All we got is water, but I guess you never drink that, do you?
20:28Muff. Hey, Muff.
20:32Listen up. It's Huck. Huck Finn. Can you hear me?
20:38It's over me, Huck.
20:39Uh-huh.
20:41Shh.
20:42Hi there, Tom. What are you doing here?
20:45I brought something for Muff. What about you?
20:48I've done the same thing. What did you bring? Can I have a look?
20:51You first.
20:52It's tobacco.
20:53He loves smoking, so I brought him some tobacco leaf and a pipe to smoke it in.
20:58I thought he might get hungry, so I brought him some ham.
21:02Well, what are we waiting for? Time's a-wasting.
21:09Muff, it's us.
21:10Huck and Tom, listen, we got something for you.
21:13Up here, Muff.
21:16How you doing?
21:18Well, now, look who's here. It's Huck Finn.
21:21Yeah, and Tom Sawyer.
21:24We didn't forget you, Muff. Huck got you some tobacco, and I got a nice ham for you.
21:29Here.
21:30Well, hmm.
21:40Quick, why nobody's looking?
21:42What?
21:42The one I'm worried about is Engine Joe.
21:49I didn't mean to do it. I swear I didn't.
21:52I don't remember nothing that happened that night. I swear, I don't remember nothing.
21:59Sure wish there was something we could do.
22:01Yeah.
22:03Well, can you think of anything, Huck?
22:06Not a thing, Tom.
22:08If we tell the sheriff what happened, then Muff would, huh?
22:11Huh?
22:12Huh?
22:13You kids shouldn't be out here so late. Could be real bad for your health if you're not careful.
22:19Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh.
22:21Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
22:29Ooh.
22:30Here goes a murderer.
22:35Help! Help! Help!
22:54No! Blood everywhere!
22:59I swear! I won't tell anybody! I swear!
23:01What?
23:02I swear it!
23:16It's about time.
23:24No! No!
23:33No!
23:36No!
23:38Hm.
23:39Hmm.
23:54Nooooooo!
23:56That does it. I'm gonna go sleep in the kitchen.
24:29That's it. I'm gonna go sleep in the kitchen.
24:40People are born in the middle of the night.
24:42People are born in the middle of the night.
24:47People are born in the middle of the night.
25:07That's it. I'm going to go sleep in the middle of the night.
25:11I am gonna sleep in the middle of the night.
25:22And I'll be back to you, and I'll be back to you, and I'll be back to you.
