News Editor Shane McGinley explains whether ongoing US-Iran talks mediated by Pakistan could lead to a breakthrough deal on nuclear and Strait of Hormuz issues.
Transcript
00:00It's probably best to look at Pakistan because, like you said, they're the moderators and, you know, they're not going
00:05to be using these sort of bombastic statements that we see coming out from Trump and from Tehran.
00:11But, yeah, Pakistan's army chief was in Tehran on Wednesday to sort of give the position of the U.S.
00:20and what both sides are thinking.
00:23And the issues that were obviously at the forefront is the issue of nuclear weapons and obviously the Strait of
00:30Hormuz.
00:30So on both of those issues, there does seem to be some sort of movement.
00:35Reuters reported that some senior Iranian officials had told them that there was greater hopes that the ceasefire would prevail
00:44and that, you know, there would be some steps made on both of these issues.
00:50And so if you look at, for example, the nuclear power issue, the Iranian sources have said that they're willing
00:59to hand over some of the highly enriched uranium stockpiles.
01:04And on the issue of the timelines, apparently the disagreement was that the U.S. wanted 20 years and Tehran
01:11was offering sort of three to five that they wouldn't engage in any sort of nuclear weaponing.
01:18And there has been reports coming out of, well, not even reports.
01:21Trump was just talking to reporters before we came on air and he was saying that they were going to
01:26agree to 20 years.
01:28But I'm just looking at the Reuters free that we have running at the moment.
01:32Iran has not responded to what Trump has said.
01:36And we have seen in the past, obviously, when he originally spoke, that there was, you know, brilliant and excellent
01:42and, you know, amazing talks going on.
01:44And then Iran came out and said, well, I don't know who you're talking to because you're not talking to
01:47us.
01:48So I'm kind of hoping that by the end of the show, we don't see Iran coming out and, you
01:54know, rebuffing what Trump has said and, you know, the movements that have been made on both sides in terms
02:01of nuclear power.
02:02And in the Straits of Hormuz, the sources had said as well that they were willing to allow ships to
02:08use the Omani half of the waters going through the Straits.
02:12So I think if both of those issues can be resolved, then that will be a positive move.
02:19And Donald Trump had said that he foresees that there could be a deal done in Islamabad this weekend and
02:26that if that happens, he will personally fly out to oversee it.
02:30So, again, I want to be optimistic that that's going to happen.
02:34But I think we just need to watch all of the news that comes out of Iran, whether they sort
02:41of are positive on what Trump is saying and endorse it or whether they, as we've seen before, whether they
02:46come out and completely reject it.
02:49In terms of Hegseth, I'm not a huge fan of his.
02:53You know, I kind of just see him as the war, Kendall, and I don't really take him seriously.
02:58But when he was saying, like, Operation Economic Fury, well, if you just look at the reaction to, you know,
03:04a lot smarter oil analysts, the price of oil has gone up 5%.
03:08And I wouldn't be surprised by the time I get to work tomorrow morning, it's over 100%.
03:15So that's not a good sign.
03:16And even to show how serious they're taking this, the Trump administration is meeting with a lot of the oil
03:24companies in Washington to see if they can drill, maybe drill a bit more to get the price to come
03:30down, which at the end of the day, that's what impacts MAGA voters.
03:35So, yeah, there's a lot going on, but I really, really hope that we don't see a rebuttal by the
03:42Iranian side by the end of the show tonight.
03:44So there's a lot to play.
03:48So there's a lot to play.
