00:18Voids, voids, and more voids, but we won't be avoiding them tonight on an all-new edition
00:23of my sit-down exclusive with Rick and Marty, joined by Craig Tester.
00:28Guys, thanks for meeting with me again.
00:29Hello, Manny.
00:29Hi, Manny.
00:30You know, I'm hearing a lot from fans.
00:32They love this feature.
00:33They love being able to get some pregame, you know, some inside information stuff that
00:38we don't see in the episodes.
00:39And there's a lot to talk about before we move on to the episode that we're about to
00:42hit.
00:43I want to talk about last week.
00:44You guys go to Eagle Canada, and we start seeing the results of the seismic.
00:49So let's jump into it.
00:50Here is the lay of the two 3Ds and the 2D line, mega bins up there to the north, and
00:58then the
00:58we're orthogonal down here to the south over the money pit.
01:03So here's the mega bin.
01:05This is definitely the largest anomaly in this data set so far.
01:10It's roughly 50 meters long, so you're in the 150 to 175 foot length.
01:15And seismic is paying off, right, Craig?
01:18Absolutely.
01:19You know, we were concerned that we wouldn't see any images, or the data quality might
01:24be poor, but the data quality was great, and we did see images.
01:28Can you dimension that?
01:29Yeah.
01:30Here it is.
01:32We're around the 40-ish, 50 foot depth there.
01:35So like the anomaly is this.
01:38You've got a hard reflector on top, hard reflector on the base.
01:41Is that consistent with a chamber, with a roof and a floor?
01:45Yeah, it is.
01:47Wow.
01:51And you two, in the very first episode of this, our little pregame interviews, you guys
01:57had said you've worked a lot with seismic over the years in your oil drilling business,
02:01in your energy business.
02:02Yes.
02:02How many times have you had problems with seismic where it wasn't quite the picture you wanted,
02:07or it was hard to interpret?
02:08Does that happen a lot?
02:09And did you expect maybe that would happen here?
02:11It did happen here to some extent, Matty.
02:14Seismic is all interpretive.
02:16I mean, it's not like an x-ray.
02:19You know, people think it's sort of like an x-ray of the ground.
02:22It's virtually never like that.
02:24Mm-hmm.
02:25It's subject to interpretation, and it is in this case, too.
02:29Now, they were able to image very shallow features.
02:33Well, that's good.
02:34Now, we still have to test them, and they don't quite fit, but they're exciting because
02:39the geophysicist involved is saying, look, these are voids.
02:43These are chambers of some sort.
02:45Well, let's see.
02:48No way to tell at this point if they are natural or man-made, correct?
02:52That's correct.
02:52But are there any features that you guys with your expertise see that make you think,
02:56well, that's pretty anomalous.
02:57That probably isn't natural.
02:59We understand what they're looking at.
03:02Mm-hmm.
03:02But remember, the money pit itself is so jumbled up that we knew there were going to be anomalies.
03:07I mean, that was a given.
03:08Mm-hmm.
03:09So, I don't know.
03:11Craig, what do you think about it?
03:12I was encouraged by, you know, between C1 and H8 is the biggest anomaly that they had.
03:20The one that had...
03:21A big void between C1 and H8 where we know a lot of things have been brought up.
03:25A lot of stuff, yeah.
03:25Right.
03:26And then in the other area where we had the mega bin.
03:29So, it was very encouraging to get good results and targets to drill for.
03:34Mega bin.
03:35I love that term.
03:36What did Dan Blankenship think he found, Rick?
03:40You know, up in that area, Dan, probably what he deemed to be the best driller he ever had on
03:45the island.
03:46His name was Parker Kennedy, who had been drilling since he was 15 years old.
03:50The drill string was getting caught up, stuck.
03:54And I believe it was Dan who suggested to Parker, bring it up.
03:58Let's see what's... see what the problem is.
04:01They bring it up, the bar's coated with this substance.
04:05And Parker doesn't know what to make of it.
04:07You know, there's no leak.
04:08There's no nothing.
04:09And so, Dan says, wait a minute.
04:12He grabs a stick.
04:13This is Dan's story.
04:16He grabs a stick and he swipes the drill string.
04:19And then he smells it.
04:20And he says, I know what that is.
04:23He says, it's an underground latrine.
04:26But you're talking 90 feet down.
04:29You're not going to dig a latrine 90 feet down.
04:31So, his suspicion was that based on his, based on the work he had done in the Triton shaft and
04:38some dousing that he had done in the area, he believed that there were a series of tunnels and or
04:42rooms associated with this underground latrine.
04:45And thus, he speculated that there were slaves held underground and that was the facility they were using.
04:53He had no other explanation for it, but he was absolutely 100% convinced there was an underground latrine.
04:59Yeah, he was.
04:59My goodness.
05:00He thought there was a big chamber, big enough to house people.
05:03Mm-hmm.
05:03Right where this seismic anomaly is.
05:06So, we'll see.
05:07We're definitely going to drill it.
05:08Without question, we're going to drill it.
05:10And then we'll find out.
05:11And we'll find out.
05:12There's a big cavity there.
05:15Everything changes.
05:16The only way you would have something that deep for that purpose would be if you were doing massive works
05:20down there.
05:21Mm-hmm.
05:21That's what, that's the proposition, yeah.
05:24Wow.
05:24Okay, but, but I'm, I'm withholding belief on that because it's, it's kind of in the too-good-to-be
05:29-true category in the megabit.
05:31I mean, well, over the years we've learned not to get too excited so that we don't get too depressed.
05:38We have.
05:39No, he's talking about us.
05:40Yeah.
05:41But, you know, every time the hammer grab comes up, every time a core comes up, every time a shovel
05:46is dug on a metal detecting,
05:49your excitement level jumps up, jumps up, and then if there's nothing there, it goes back down.
05:55It's, it's a fun part of it, but it's a frustrating part, too.
05:59Um, talk about that technology that not only Eagle uses, but there have been episodes, you guys are using technology
06:05to the extent,
06:06I mean, we've, you know, a few episodes ago you had a guy wearing a hologram, and now there's 3D
06:10models in seismic.
06:12I mean, you guys really are stepping up the technological game.
06:15We're bringing state-of-the-art, as we understand it, to the island.
06:19I don't know, if there's something else out there that we don't know about, we'd like to know about and
06:23try it.
06:23We'd bring any technology that has promise to figure this thing out, we'd bring it to bear.
06:28It's all about looking underground.
06:30As long as it didn't break the bank.
06:32Well, and that's, that is a legitimate concern for your team.
06:36Um, I'm asked that a lot, actually, about the finances of this whole thing.
06:41We're in it to win it.
06:44Go big or go home.
06:45You guys have really taken it to the next level to help you try to solve this mystery.
06:49And speaking of that, you guys have brought in another detector.
06:55So I want to bring in the OG detector, Gary Drayton, and get to the bottom of that.
06:59I don't know if there's room enough on this island for two detectors, guys.
07:02Let's do it.
07:03All right, we're gonna find out.
07:04Don't go anywhere. Gary Drayton joins us next.
07:09Am I detecting tension on Oak Island?
07:12I don't know.
07:13Let's bring in Gary Drayton and find out.
07:15Hey, Gary.
07:16How you doing, mate?
07:16So I'm joking, of course, because we've brought in Mike West and another type of metal detecting.
07:22Talk about working with a different metal detector.
07:25Yeah, it's gonna be like a tag team.
07:28Mike West has got the EM61, and that detects large targets at depth.
07:34Whereas I use surface metal detectors, my equipment's more sensitive.
07:40It can get small targets, but relatively shallow depths.
07:44Like the 18 inches to 24 inch range.
07:48And have you ever done anything like this before, Gary, in concert with another metal detector?
07:52No, we normally avoid each other. We're like pirates.
07:56I gotcha.
07:57But it's a really good way of covering ground, especially on Oak Island.
08:02Come on, Mr. West. Find us something good.
08:05I'll find something.
08:06Mike can go over the ground first, locate targets, and then I can go over afterwards.
08:14And anything I can't detect, that means it's deeper.
08:18My equipment does not detect it.
08:22So it's a good way of avoiding digging junk at depth.
08:27Did you and Mike sit down and strategize before he started?
08:30And we see him on camera just kind of rolling the thing.
08:32But did you and him talk about how you were gonna do this?
08:35It was a perfect situation for us because there was a lot of high-tech search techniques going on at
08:41the moment.
08:41Right.
08:41But it was the low-tech stuff, Rick's twin optical scanners, that saw this new boulderless beach.
08:50And just for me, clarify what a boulderless beach might mean. Rocks cleared for?
08:58This is an island. Rocks are cleared for a landing spot to me.
09:03Because whatever came to this island, it came from the ocean.
09:07With that in mind, Mike rolls his detector.
09:14I think Mike's got another signal.
09:16Any idea of the size of it?
09:18Yeah, something here sits quite small.
09:20But in this area here where I just kicked off a little bit.
09:24Yeah, I'm getting it.
09:26It's only reading four or five inches.
09:28What? All right, that makes it easy.
09:31It's high up on the beach.
09:32I've got the ultimate digger with me, Jack the Pitbull.
09:36I'd say it's like a pitbull on a T-bone.
09:39He's not gonna give up till he gets it.
09:41Dig in a big hole.
09:43You want to check?
09:44Yep.
09:46Oh, it's out right there.
09:48I see it, yeah, I see it.
09:50What is it?
09:53Yeah, look at that.
09:56A welding rod?
09:58No, look at this.
10:00No?
10:00Tip on the end.
10:01Oh, shoot!
10:03And out pops this incredible find.
10:07I was kind of gobsmacked when I picked this piece of metal up, and I'm like...
10:13You know, I kind of knew what it was, but I'm like, what is it doing here?
10:18Oh, shoot!
10:19That is nice!
10:21The condition was really, really good, but I noticed that the freshwater pond was right
10:28in front of there, and I know some excavations have been done in the freshwater pond, so perhaps
10:34that's why it was in such good condition.
10:37And it looked too good to be true.
10:41It looked like it was an handmade piece.
10:45It had file marks on it.
10:47The point, the spear, the tip, was filed.
10:54It looked like an armor-piercing projectile, like a crossbow bolt.
11:00I absolutely, without any prompting, I thought of a crossbow bolt.
11:04I did.
11:04You did?
11:05I did.
11:05And you said, you used the exact same term on video.
11:08I remember you were like, it looks like a crossbow bolt.
11:10Yeah.
11:11Initial thought, yeah.
11:13I believe this projectile is very, very, very old.
11:20You might have brought the Templars to Oak Island, finding the cross.
11:23Have you brought war to Oak Island?
11:25People firing things at each other?
11:27Well, all those thoughts were flashing through my mind.
11:29Right.
11:30Because I'm thinking, you know, chain mail, armor-piercing projectiles.
11:35We've got the Templars on this side of the island.
11:38That's exciting, because that's the type of thing that you want to do.
11:40You would have brought out of the ground in Europe.
11:42Yeah, it is.
11:43I mean, well, I'm surprised to find the medieval cross in Smith's Cove, and now on a different
11:51part of an island, potentially a medieval weapon.
11:56It boggles them out.
11:59It's unbelievable.
11:59And I'm sure we'll hopefully learn more about that as we move forward.
12:04All right.
12:04As exciting as that possibility is, we have to move on because we're getting closer to showtime
12:08here.
12:09And coming up, we go from boulderless beaches to a mysterious beach.
12:13And these guys try to finish what Dan Blankenship started a long time ago.
12:19Don't go anywhere.
12:23Welcome back, Acorns.
12:24As promised, joining us now, back with the team, Craig Tester.
12:27Craig, thanks for joining us again.
12:28Sure thing.
12:29So, Smith's Cove, we've been talking a lot in this episode about technology and how cutting-edge
12:36it has been and continues to be.
12:39I can't help but think of the juxtaposition of that with, like, say, for example, what
12:45Dan Blankenship did at Smith's Cove.
12:47The fact that he found a U-shaped structure building that cofferdam himself is stunning
12:53to me.
12:54Well, look.
12:55All you have to do is look behind Marty's back here.
12:58That's Dan's cofferdam right there.
13:01And you can see the U-shaped structure.
13:03It's revealed he managed to do it.
13:05It's just such a great moment of Oak Island history.
13:08But when you think about it, you only see one machine there, right?
13:12Yeah, right.
13:13Look at what he revealed.
13:15And think about what we're going to apply and the differences.
13:19And that's a testament to his determination.
13:22Let's talk about this massive wall.
13:24When you were presented the plan for the cofferdam as it exists now, did any part of you think,
13:29well, maybe this is too much for us to handle this season?
13:32Or were you full-bore, let's go?
13:34It had to be.
13:35Anything less wouldn't have worked.
13:37It had to be.
13:38You know, it was only a do it or don't do it.
13:42Do it right or don't do it.
13:44There wasn't anything in between.
13:45There were no half measures.
13:46No.
13:47It wouldn't work.
13:48And you guys tried a bladder dam system a couple times here on Oak Island.
13:54Hey, guys.
13:54How's it going?
13:55Going good.
13:56It's really cool.
13:57It looks like it'll work.
13:59God, I shouldn't have said that.
14:01Oh, I think you're going to be fine.
14:03I think you're going to be fine.
14:05I mean, the bladder system was amazing, but let's face it, it had its problems.
14:10It leaked.
14:11The big inflatable bladder, the liquid-filled bladder, really didn't leak from the surface.
14:17I mean, it was designed to hold back the water from the floor of the ocean up.
14:22Right.
14:23It did.
14:24The problem is we underestimated how much water would come through underneath.
14:29Severely underestimated it.
14:30And this wall is, hopefully, the plan is for it to be impenetrable to things like that, right?
14:36These panels should go down and not only seal above, they should seal below.
14:39They're going to be driven, and are being driven, between 25 and 40 feet below the base, below the, not
14:47the sea level, but the sea floor.
14:59It's actually up in the air.
15:01It's a good day, Rick.
15:03Oh, look at all that sheet piling stacked up there.
15:05Look at that.
15:07How confident are we that this wall will handle that better?
15:11Well, there are two really different applications.
15:14Dam & Dam worked great for what we were looking for at the time, but it can't seal down deep.
15:20And so we need to seal deep under the sand layer.
15:25And so this new system, you know, we're pounding it down deep.
15:30Quite impressive.
15:36How long do you think it would take to do that section right there?
15:39If everything goes good, I think we'll be done if we have the sheets in a couple days.
15:42Oh, really?
15:43It's going to be a massive undertaking for us to dig behind it.
15:46Yeah, exactly.
15:47We believe there's something in the money pit, but here we know there's something.
15:51That U-shaped structure is definitely there, and we want to expose it.
15:54Yeah.
15:55We have hard target, and maybe some artifacts, and maybe some artifacts.
16:01It's going to seal it off great.
16:03And once that place dries up, I think we're going to be able to do a tremendous amount of work
16:08in there.
16:09I just want to get your guys' first initial, maybe a word that came to mind.
16:13When you first started to see those pieces of the wall get pounded down, like, what's the first thing you
16:17thought?
16:17Was there any trepidation, like, whoa?
16:20You were there.
16:22Yeah, not really, I'll be honest with you.
16:25You know, the first couple sheets were very difficult.
16:28You know, they're trying to get them quite perpendicular, and they fit like that.
16:34You know, there's a groove there, and the two pieces fit snugly together.
16:39But as you're driving, the concern was that, you know, we'd hit a boulder field,
16:44and then they would go off, and then the sheets would separate, and that'd be a problem.
16:49So what we really did is, prior to the install, we did some geotech drilling
16:53to try to come to an understanding of what the underground really looked like.
16:57And surprisingly, there were no problems, or at least not yet.
17:01Not yet.
17:03And how much of that wall is because of that cross?
17:09I don't know.
17:10You know, we've been after that U-shaped structure.
17:12I'll tell you a story.
17:14When Rick first, not first, because that goes way back,
17:17but when the island came up for sale, and we were talking about buying it,
17:21and Craig knew nothing about it, and I went into your office,
17:24and we went through the book, and you did a little reading,
17:26and I remember I opened it at that page that showed the U-shaped structure
17:29with those Roman numerals on it, and you said,
17:32well, there you go. There's something here.
17:36Do you remember that?
17:38Eh, not completely.
17:39Well, I do. I do.
17:41And so that thing has always been lurking out there is, you know,
17:45we need to investigate that thing.
17:46Well, how about this? You will remember this.
17:48I was like, how is it that that was so under-investigated?
17:52Yes.
17:52It's such a massive thing, and it's so dramatic.
17:55So we have to get out there for that.
17:57So I mean, from my standpoint, the cross kind of was like icing on the cake.
18:01We were always going to go into Smith's Cove.
18:03You were never going to leave Smith's Cove.
18:05That was not going to be a regret.
18:07Right.
18:08Absolutely not.
18:09And the answer, it was under-investigated because of the cofferdam failure, right?
18:14Yes.
18:15And Dan was never able to, because of time or resources or money or all of the above,
18:19to go back and build another one and find out what it was.
18:21But you guys are making up for that.
18:24Yes.
18:24See, I love that.
18:26You know, Craig, you see something like that, and you go, that's worth investigating.
18:29And you guys are going to finish what Dan couldn't.
18:33And that is so important.
18:34You guys are solving this mystery.
18:36And we all love to watch it.
18:38All right.
18:39Don't go anywhere, because speaking of watching,
18:41we are just minutes away from the all-new episode of The Curse of Oak Island.
18:45Don't go anywhere.
18:49Welcome back.
18:50I'm here with the brothers Rick and Marty Lagina.
18:53Guys, we're just minutes away now from the new episode.
18:56We are four episodes in or about to be.
18:59And I just kind of want to check in with you guys
19:01before we get to the specifics of that episode
19:04and just see how you feel thus far.
19:07A lot of information has come at us in three episodes.
19:11I want to ask you this.
19:12What do you know now almost four episodes into a sixth season
19:16that you didn't know last season?
19:19Well, we know seismic works to some extent.
19:23The extent is yet to be determined,
19:25but we know that a new technology shows promise here.
19:28We know that.
19:29We know we have another very significant find,
19:32probably the first treasure found this year.
19:37We know that we are much more focused on information
19:41and results of experiments
19:43than we are on actually searching at depth.
19:47Right.
19:47But we're going to.
19:48We're going to search at depth.
19:50We're just trying to hone it in.
19:51We're trying to, you know, cross all the T's
19:54and dot all the I's and then dig.
19:56I love it.
19:57Dig, baby, dig.
19:58Dig.
19:58You've got to dig.
19:59If you don't dig, it's like not buying a lottery ticket.
20:01You're never going to win the lottery.
20:03Never.
20:04And you're being very deliberate and doing it right.
20:07Trying to.
20:08We'll make mistakes.
20:09We'll overlook things.
20:10And we'll come back and think,
20:11oh, we should have done this.
20:13But we're going to do the best we can
20:15to figure out where to dig.
20:17And dig we will.
20:19Well, tonight is a very special episode
20:23because let's face it, with this research,
