00:00:36All right. The big announcement. We are moving to Green Bay, Wisconsin. I'm going, where's Wisconsin?

00:00:49So the next day, my father comes home with a map. He said, this is the state of Wisconsin.

00:00:58And he's looking. Green Bay. It ain't a map. And I'm going, well, I'm not moving any place that's not

00:01:06on the map.

00:01:08And he said, when I am done, it will be on that map. And you'll know exactly, Susan, where you

00:01:16lived.

00:01:19Lombardi. A certain magic still lingers in the very day. It speaks of duels in the snow and cold November

00:01:28months.

00:01:28Lombardi had a tremendous record as head coached in the National Football League.

00:01:32There was an energy about him.

00:01:34Whether he motivated through logic or fear, he didn't give a damn.

00:01:41Lombardi was the greatest leader I've ever known.

00:01:45Could Napoleon have been successful? He didn't have the ego.

00:01:49That's what drives him.

00:01:51Title time USA it is. It's a happy day at Green Bay.

00:01:55He had an obsession that was deeper than anyone else's.

00:01:59And the Green Bay fans are going to be world champion.

00:02:02You have to know Vince Lombardi. And if you don't, you don't know his.

00:02:08Winning isn't everything, but it's the only thing.

00:02:14Yeah, sir.

00:02:22Winning, I think it's only natural that anyone would think that to win is important.

00:02:30That's the reason you're in this business.

00:02:31If you have any kind of pride or any kind of dedication or any kind of accolade or spunk to

00:02:36you,

00:02:36you should try to be the best in your own profession, regardless of what it is.

00:02:42Anybody who has the idea that just to play or just to take part, and that's all that's necessary,

00:02:46I think he's in the wrong business.

00:02:47I think he's in the wrong country, let me put it that way.

00:02:54I think one of the things that made America great is to try to be the best in everything that

00:02:58they do.

00:02:59And the best, again, is signified by winning.

00:03:06In the winter of 1959, Vince Lombardi, a born and bred New Yorker,

00:03:12packed up himself and his family and drove to pro football's farthest outpost, Green Bay, Wisconsin.

00:03:21It may have been the Siberia of the NFL, but to the new head coach of the Packers,

00:03:27Green Bay marked the end of a long and frustrating road that began 45 years earlier.

00:03:38I was born on June 11th, 19th.

00:03:41The outpost of the NFL, they had two teams in California, 49ers and Rams.

00:03:53My father was a meat cutter first and then went into business for himself in the wholesale meat business.

00:03:59He worked hard and he expected us to be the same way.

00:04:04My father was very heavily tattooed.

00:04:08He had tattoos on his fingers.

00:04:11One hand said work, had W-O-R-K, and the other one was play, P-L-A-Y.

00:04:17Work and play, sort of the dichotomy of life.

00:04:20I'm not sure how much Harry Lombardi got to play.

00:04:24He worked most of the time.

00:04:27As the boys grew up, they went to work in that meat packing.

00:04:32And they were carrying half of a cow.

00:04:35And I think that was my grandfather's way of teaching discipline.

00:04:42Hauling meat had little appeal to the Lombardi's eldest son, Vince,

00:04:46who was urged onto a more spiritual path by his mother, Matilda.

00:04:51We've always been made aware of the importance of church.

00:04:57Our grade schools were always Catholic schools.

00:05:02Vince became an altar boy, and he enjoyed it.

00:05:06I don't think he can understand Lombardi without understanding the role of religion in his life.

00:05:13Vince's faith was so profound that at 15 he had visions of becoming Father Lombardi.

00:05:20He even enrolled in a school that prepared teenage boys for the priesthood.

00:05:25But short of completing his study, he had a change of heart.

00:05:31I think he left for a couple of reasons.

00:05:33One is he liked girls, and the other is he liked football.

00:05:36And neither of those could be done at Cathedral Prep.

00:05:40But rather than abandon his faith, Vince found a way to balance it with football.

00:05:45Rising from the Brooklyn sandlots to high school prominence,

00:05:49he became the first Lombardi to attend college

00:05:51when he accepted a scholarship to the Jesuit school, Fordham University.

00:05:58When he arrived at the Bronx campus as a freshman in 1933,

00:06:02Fordham was a national football power.

00:06:06Number 40, right guard.

00:06:08Not the most talented, but he was tenacious and never quit.

00:06:16Nearsighted and colorblind.

00:06:18It doesn't matter for an offensive lineman.

00:06:21You don't have to see too far.

00:06:25Removed from the sheltered world of his Italian neighborhood,

00:06:29Vince was being exposed to the harsh realities of life.

00:06:34A teammate of his made a comment,

00:06:36Lombardi, come over here and stand next to this other fellow.

00:06:40I want to see which one of you is the darker complexion.

00:06:43To an Italian, that was a pretty good insult.

00:06:46And a fight ensued.

00:06:48They both ended up in the infirmary.

00:06:51And my dad really thought his football career at Fordham was over,

00:06:55that he was going to get thrown out of school as a consequence.

00:06:59Now, Lombardi was pretty dead.

00:07:02Though Lombardi's suspension lasted only days,

00:07:05his sensitivity to prejudice would stay with him for a lifetime.

00:07:10It was an era when that sort of discrimination against Italians was commonplace.

00:07:17It was one of the driving forces of Lombardi's life.

00:07:20He had something to prove, and that drove him to achieve even more.

00:07:24As did the lessons he took from the Jesuits.

00:07:28The Jesuits were rigorous academics,

00:07:30and you were pushed to be the best that you can be with what you have,

00:07:35academically, sports-wise, whatever.

00:07:39It was the striving for perfection and the giving of everything

00:07:43that Lombardi took out of the Jesuits

00:07:46and brought to his entire life afterwards.

00:07:53Lombardi was often injured and sat out much of his first three seasons.

00:07:58Once healthy, he played both offense and defense

00:08:01and became a fixture on Fordham's celebrated line,

00:08:04which was never better than during a showdown with national power Pittsburgh,

00:08:08a game that came down to a goal-line stand.

00:08:11Bobby LaRue crashes the line only to find Fordham's magnificent forward wall

00:08:15holding him at the line of scrimmage.

00:08:17The game ended in a scoreless tie, and Fordham remained unbeaten.

00:08:22It was his proudest moment as a football player.

00:08:25He was one of the heroes of that great game in their finest season.

00:08:31The Fordham line wrote itself into college football lore,

00:08:35and the undersized Lombardi was immortalized as one of the Seven Blocks of Granite.

00:08:43He wasn't a great player, but he was part of this group,

00:08:47and that's what the Seven Blocks represent,

00:08:49this group all working in concert.

00:08:56For a couple of years after graduation, Lombardi was at loose ends.

00:09:01He gave law school a try, but after one semester, dropped out.

00:09:06He kind of knocked around, played a little semi-pro football,

00:09:12and as I recall, he worked for a collection agency,

00:09:18and wasn't thrilled with that.

00:09:21At 26, Lombardi was still looking for a career

00:09:24when an unexpected offer came his way.

00:09:28When he was asked to be an assistant high school coach,

00:09:31Lombardi jumped at the chance,

00:09:33though it was the other part of the job that piqued his interest.

00:09:37My dad taught at St. Cecilia's High School in Englewood, New Jersey,

00:09:40which is an immediate suburb of New York City.

00:09:44Taught chemistry, physics, and Latin.

00:09:47And he was a very good teacher.

00:09:48I can remember he threw an eraser at my wife one time

00:09:55because she was gabbing in the back of the classroom.

00:09:58He was a stickler to make sure that you understood the subject.

00:10:03He did take time for kids who were a little slower,

00:10:09and he was patient with them.

00:10:12His patience in the classroom translated to the football field

00:10:17and helped elevate him from assistant to head coach.

00:10:21I remember when we came out for practice before the season began,

00:10:25he had a football there, and he said,

00:10:27this is a football.

00:10:28And he took the football and threw it away,

00:10:30and he said, that's the last you're going to see of a football for two weeks.

00:10:33What?

00:10:34For two weeks, it was merciless calisthenics.

00:10:39The practices were not only long, but difficult.

00:10:43We went into the evening.

00:10:45We would be scrimmaging under headlights from God.

00:10:48He was a great believer in the fundamentals.

00:10:51I went to the block, block, block, and run, run, run.

00:10:54And he did that, that, that, that, that, boom.

00:10:56He was that way, you know.

00:10:57It makes you say, they don't belong on the same field with you.

00:11:00You know, I said to myself, you're talking about the guys out there?

00:11:04They're a foot over my head.

00:11:06They're about 30 pounds heavier than me.

00:11:08They're killing me out there.

00:11:10But you get to the point where you say,

00:11:12Jesus, maybe he's right.

00:11:13Maybe he knows something that I don't know, you know.

00:11:15And you start playing maybe a little over your head.

00:11:19Lombardi spent eight years at St. Cecilia's, five as head coach.

00:11:23The tiny Catholic school had an enrollment of 300,

00:11:26but won six straight parochial school state titles

00:11:30and racked up a consecutive streak of 32 unbeaten games.

00:11:35Somehow, St. Cecilia's was beating schools with ten times its student body.

00:11:42You have to attribute that to him, see.

00:11:44He was the difference.

00:11:46He knew how to get the most out of his players.

00:11:49He was a genius at that.

00:11:52Lombardi had a natural gift for leadership,

00:11:55which the basketball team soon discovered.

00:11:59Vince never played it.

00:12:00Vince never coached it.

00:12:01He goes to the library,

00:12:03and he gets a book by the head coach at SMU

00:12:07who wrote this book like, I don't know, 15, 20 years earlier

00:12:11when the center jump was after every basket.

00:12:15Using that book as his guide,

00:12:17you've got to make so many passes.

00:12:19That's right.

00:12:19You've got to make so many passes.

00:12:20I don't care if you're standing alone,

00:12:22but you've got to make so many passes.

00:12:23So he coaches out of his textbook,

00:12:25which becomes his Bible,

00:12:27and he wins his state championship.

00:12:29He didn't know much about basketball,

00:12:31but he knew about people.

00:12:35He's a master psychologist.

00:12:38He rode me.

00:12:40He embarrassed me, and, you know, he hounded me.

00:12:43But he never let me leave the gym

00:12:45without coming over and patting me on the butt saying,

00:12:47Mick, today was a tough day.

00:12:48Tomorrow's going to be a better day.

00:12:50He just made me want to play harder.

00:12:53He loved the sensation of developing a team

00:12:58and then prevailing.

00:13:01That addiction of winning sort of hit him at St. Cecilia,

00:13:05and he realized that this is what he could do.

00:13:10I think coaching is teaching, you see?

00:13:14So I don't think there's any difference

00:13:15whether you teach on the football field

00:13:18or whether you teach in the classroom.

00:13:20They're both exactly the same.

00:13:22It's a question of a good teacher

00:13:25puts across what he must put across to his pupils.

00:13:29Whether it's done on the football field

00:13:30or whether it's done in the classroom

00:13:31is one and the same thing.

00:13:37While at St. Cecilia's,

00:13:39Lombardy found a clear path to his future.

00:13:42In 1940, he married Marie Planets,

00:13:45his college sweetheart

00:13:46and the only girl he ever dated.

00:13:50Within two years,

00:13:52son Vincent was born.

00:13:55Daughter Susan arrived five years after that.

00:14:00Almost from the start,

00:14:02Marie discovered she wasn't Vince's only love.

00:14:06They were in their honeymoon

00:14:07and my father turned to my mother and says,

00:14:11well, honeymoon's over.

00:14:12I gotta go home,

00:14:14go to St. Cecilia training camp.

00:14:17I honestly believe that she taught herself football

00:14:21and she made up a mind

00:14:23that she was going to try to become a part of his life.

00:14:27They had ups and downs in their marriage

00:14:30almost always related to the fact

00:14:32that he was obsessed with something else

00:14:34and that football was indeed his mistress.

00:14:37By the time Lombardy was in his mid-30s,

00:14:40leading a small high school team

00:14:42no longer satisfied his growing passion for coaching.

00:14:46He had bigger dreams

00:14:47and thought he could fulfill them at his alma mater.

00:14:51He moved on to Fordham as an assistant coach

00:14:53with the belief that he would be the next head coach.

00:14:57But Lombardy was basically shut out

00:15:00and completely disappointed

00:15:01and the frustration started.

00:15:06He knew all the guys who coached under Ed Blake and Armie

00:15:09seemed to get head coaching jobs.

00:15:11So he said, I'll see if I can get up there.

00:15:14Because he wanted now to make his big step.

00:15:17And he also knew he could learn from Blake.

00:15:20I was a neophyte as far as football was concerned

00:15:23until I went to West Point.

00:15:25Of course, Red Blake was the number one coach in the country.

00:15:30In 1949, short of coaching his own team,

00:15:34Lombardy got the next best thing.

00:15:36The chance to run the offensive backfield

00:15:38and perennial power army

00:15:41where he worshipped at the altar of Red Blake.

00:15:45I've got to give him all the credit

00:15:46for whatever I know in football.

00:15:48As far as organization of practices,

00:15:50organization of thinking,

00:15:51particularly as far as film is concerned.

00:15:54Blake was a fanatic over studying film

00:15:57and preparing and breaking down game film

00:16:00and the opposition.

00:16:02At West Point, they were up in the turret

00:16:04of the athletic building studying film day and night.

00:16:08Lombardy followed to the letter

00:16:10Blake's painstaking approach to detail.

00:16:12And in his first two years at Army,

00:16:14the team lost only one game.

00:16:17But Lombardy's uncompromising work ethic

00:16:20took its toll on his family.

00:16:23He would come home fairly late at night,

00:16:26distracted,

00:16:27pull into the wrong driveway

00:16:29and walk into the wrong house.

00:16:31Physically, he'd be home.

00:16:32Mentally, he was always somewhere else.

00:16:34And I don't think Marie handled that very well.

00:16:38This separate life of his, of football.

00:16:44Marie started to enjoy drinking at that point.

00:16:48It was an escape for her

00:16:50because Vin wasn't there all the time for her.

00:16:54To the exclusion of everything else,

00:16:56Lombardy was focused on football

00:16:58and his relentless pursuit of a head coaching job.

00:17:02He hoped West Point would be the catalyst for such a move.

00:17:06Air Force was looking for a coach.

00:17:09Notre Dame was looking for a coach.

00:17:12But he wasn't getting much attention.

00:17:14He applied for the head job at Wake Forest.

00:17:17Vince got a call from one of the people

00:17:19who interviewed him down there,

00:17:21who liked him, who wanted to hire him.

00:17:23And said,

00:17:23Vince, you better look around and do something else.

00:17:27Because I am convinced they're not going to hire a head coach

00:17:32whose name ends in a vowel.

00:17:35And ending in a vowel equals Italian-American.

00:17:40At Army, over the course of those five years,

00:17:44I think the frustration built.

00:17:46He started to see some of the other assistant coaches

00:17:49getting head coaching jobs elsewhere

00:17:51and Lombardy was being passed up.

00:17:54But in 1953, Lombardy felt a glimmer of hope

00:17:58when the New York Giants went looking for a head coach.

00:18:02Wellington Mara, a Fordham classmate of Lombardy's

00:18:05and son of the team's owner, was leading the search.

00:18:09Rumor had it that Lombardy was their man.

00:18:12It would have been a dream come true

00:18:14to be the head coach of the Giants

00:18:15where they're, you know, born and raised

00:18:17and have friends and family.

00:18:20It turned out that, in fact,

00:18:22the Maras were more interested in his boss, Red Blake,

00:18:25and thought that maybe he would come to New York

00:18:27to be the coach.

00:18:29Blake turned the Giants down,

00:18:31but recommended that they hire Lombardy

00:18:33to run their offense.

00:18:35It wasn't ideal to be an assistant at 41,

00:18:38but at least he'd be coaching grown men and not boys.

00:18:43When we got him, he was really raw,

00:18:45and he liked to treat us like we were in high school,

00:18:49and that didn't go over too well

00:18:50with some of the guys we had playing.

00:18:52So there was a bit of a disconnect.

00:18:55Behind his back, some of those veteran guys were kind of...

00:18:59We could really get to him in little ways.

00:19:02We'd take the chalk away from him,

00:19:03and he'd just get furious, screaming, yelling,

00:19:06Who took my chalk?

00:19:08We didn't dislike him or anything.

00:19:10We just thought he was kind of weird

00:19:11because no one in the professional game,

00:19:14you know, coached like that.

00:19:15When he did some silly things like yelling,

00:19:17barking, giving you a laugh or something like that,

00:19:20it got to a point where he was laughable.

00:19:23Lombardy's transition to the pro game

00:19:25was a humbling experience,

00:19:27so much so that he sought advice

00:19:29from an unlikely source.

00:19:31Charlie Connolly was my roommate.

00:19:33One night, Lombardy came into our room.

00:19:35He literally said,

00:19:36What am I doing wrong?

00:19:38I had some definite ideas,

00:19:40some of which were good

00:19:41and some of which were not so good.

00:19:44And I got some great deal of help

00:19:45from some of the giant players,

00:19:46such as Frank Gifford and Charlie Connolly.

00:19:49I had to change my way of thinking

00:19:50in many, many areas.

00:19:52Then all of a sudden,

00:19:54football knowledge,

00:19:55began to pour out on him.

00:19:57He became a success with us

00:19:59when he became one of the guys.

00:20:01By 1956,

00:20:03Lombardy had fully adjusted to the NFL.

00:20:06He centered the offense around Frank Gifford.

00:20:09Gifford responded with his best season.

00:20:14With equally outstanding defense

00:20:16led by another promising assistant,

00:20:18Tom Landry,

00:20:19the Giants went to the championship game.

00:20:23On an icy field before 56,836,

00:20:27the mighty Bears kick off the world championship game

00:20:30in Yankee Stadium.

00:20:31Tom literally was the head coach of the defense.

00:20:36Jim Lee Howell, the head coach,

00:20:37didn't get involved in any of it.

00:20:38He didn't understand it.

00:20:39Lombardy would become the head coach of the offense.

00:20:45And the Giants become world champions

00:20:48in a stunning, tremendous 47-7 win

00:20:52over the Chicago Bears,

00:20:54the Monsters of the Midway.

00:20:55In 1958,

00:20:57the assistant coaches

00:20:59led the Giants back to the title game

00:21:01where they faced Johnny Unitas

00:21:03and the Baltimore Colts.

00:21:05They lost.

00:21:06The Giants lost in overtime,

00:21:09but history would remember it

00:21:10as the greatest game ever played.

00:21:13And the Baltimore Colts

00:21:14are the champions of the world.

00:21:17The game helped elevate pro football

00:21:19to an American religion.

00:21:21And the little-known assistant coach

00:21:23standing on the Giants' sideline

00:21:25would become its patron saint.

00:21:28For now, however,

00:21:29the climax to the NFL's

00:21:31first sudden-death finish

00:21:33lingered with the 45 million viewers

00:21:35who witnessed it on national television.

00:21:41As those images slowly began to fade,

00:21:45Lombardy would emerge from the shadows.

00:21:52I had felt that I had done

00:21:54what I could for the Giants, really,

00:21:56and I just felt that it was time

00:21:58for me to move, really,

00:21:59and I made it a point to try to move.

00:22:03I couldn't do anything with the Giants.

00:22:05I couldn't advance anymore.

00:22:07I had to be more or less

00:22:09accepted by what I was

00:22:11with the Giants,

00:22:12and that's what I was.

00:22:13Otherwise, I was status quo

00:22:14as far as the Giants were concerned.

00:22:18I wasn't going to be satisfied

00:22:19as an assistant coach,

00:22:20and I wanted to be a head coach

00:22:21of a professional football team,

00:22:23and Green Bay gave me

00:22:24the chance to be one.

00:22:31In January 1959,

00:22:33Green Bay, Wisconsin,

00:22:35saw the dawning of a new era.

00:22:37The smallest NFL city

00:22:39had seen its once-proud franchise

00:22:41reduced to a last-place team

00:22:43that won a single game in 1958.

00:22:47Disgusted fans had seen enough

00:22:49and hung team president

00:22:51Dominik Olenicek in effigy.

00:22:54They were really in danger

00:22:56of actually losing their franchise.

00:22:58It was a very vulnerable situation.

00:23:04We were hoping Jay would come.

00:23:07I get a kick out of people who said,

00:23:08well, we expected something.

00:23:09No one,

00:23:11no one expected Coach Lombardi.

00:23:15He was completely ready.

00:23:17He had a fire in him

00:23:19unlike any other coach.

00:23:21It's a fact that he had

00:23:22those 20 years in the vineyards,

00:23:26preparing himself,

00:23:28thinking that he was better

00:23:29than people realized.

00:23:33All of those frustrations

00:23:35made the great...

00:23:36Olenicek,

00:23:36he treated

00:23:38like a janitor.

00:23:41Early on,

00:23:43they played an inter-squad game,

00:23:46and Lombardi sat up in

00:23:48the stands,

00:23:53and Olenicek came down

00:23:56the next day,

00:23:56and he said,

00:23:58here's a list of things

00:23:59that the board of directors

00:24:00said were wrong.

00:24:02And Lombardi took the paper,

00:24:04crumpled it up,

00:24:06threw it on the ground,

00:24:07and he says,

00:24:07I'll coach the goddamn team.

00:24:10You've got to remember something.

00:24:11Vince worked so hard

00:24:12to get where he got.

00:24:14Failure could not be an option

00:24:16because he always believed

00:24:17in his heart.

00:24:19He'd never get another chance.

00:24:21I'll tell you how proud we are

00:24:22to have you as part of the Packers.

00:24:24You should be proud

00:24:25to be here

00:24:27to be a part of this team.

00:24:28When he walked into the meeting,

00:24:30and he looked us right in the eye,

00:24:32he said,

00:24:32gentlemen,

00:24:32we're going to relentlessly

00:24:34chase perfection,

00:24:35knowing full well

00:24:37we won't catch it

00:24:38because nothing is perfect.

00:24:40But we're going to relentlessly,

00:24:42and that's how he blurted it,

00:24:44chase it,

00:24:45because in the process

00:24:47we will catch excellence.

00:24:48He said,

00:24:49I'm not remotely interested

00:24:50in being just good.

00:24:52Holy mackerel.

00:24:53Man, I was just up like this.

00:24:55I didn't even need a seat

00:24:56to sit on.

00:24:56I was like this,

00:24:57ready to go.

00:25:01In August 1959,

00:25:04Green Bay's new head coach

00:25:06opened his first training camp.

00:25:11I was in a marine boot camp

00:25:12for two years.

00:25:13I knew all about how tough it was,

00:25:14and these things were picnics

00:25:16compared to what he did.

00:25:18Come on the field,

00:25:19at first he took a lap.

00:25:20We thought that was fine.

00:25:21Then the receivers

00:25:22would go out and run paddocks.

00:25:25They'd say,

00:25:25okay, now we start practice.

00:25:26Let's spin it over there!

00:25:28And we went to up-down.

00:25:29Up, up, up, up!

00:25:31And up-down is running in place.

00:25:33When he says front,

00:25:34you hit your belly,

00:25:35back, you hit your back.

00:25:36And you would do that

00:25:37to the point of exhaustion.

00:25:39Guys would lose consciousness

00:25:41on the field,

00:25:42vomiting.

00:25:43It wasn't uncommon

00:25:45to see a guy just keel over.

00:25:47It was unbelievable.

00:25:49We all just looked at each other.

00:25:50We couldn't believe

00:25:50this guy's crazy.

00:25:51Up, up, up, up, up, up!

00:26:01The big thing is

00:26:03that he recognized

00:26:04the talent which was there.

00:26:06We had a lot of talent.

00:26:08Nitschke,

00:26:09Jimmy Taylor,

00:26:11Ringo,

00:26:12myself,

00:26:14Forrest Gregg,

00:26:15Horning,

00:26:16Star.

00:26:17There were 13 guys

00:26:19who were Pro Bowl,

00:26:21All-Pro or Hall of Fame

00:26:22on that 58 team.

00:26:25And we were 1-10-1.

00:26:28I believe we'll have a nucleus

00:26:29about which we can build

00:26:31a future.

00:26:33Lombardi's first official game

00:26:35as head coach

00:26:35had finally arrived.

00:26:38Hosting the Bears,

00:26:39Green Bay pulled off

00:26:40an upset,

00:26:41winning 9-6.

00:26:43It was only the first game

00:26:44of the season,

00:26:45but the Packers celebrated

00:26:47as if they had won

00:26:48the championship.

00:26:49I think it was

00:26:50self-preservation.

00:26:52Make him happy.

00:26:53Maybe he'll be nicer

00:26:54on us tomorrow.

00:26:55I don't know.

00:26:56The Packers ended up

00:27:17And he really incorporated

00:27:19a lot of that

00:27:20into both his personality

00:27:21and the way he conceived

00:27:23of a football team.

00:27:25You either had to believe in him

00:27:26and live to his values

00:27:29and his discipline

00:27:30and everything he was about,

00:27:31or you're out of here.

00:27:35After a dismal decade,

00:27:37the Packers were responding

00:27:39to Lombardi's leadership.

00:27:44The teacher was schooling

00:27:49his players on everything

00:27:51from how to read a defense

00:27:52to how to tell time.

00:27:56Lombardi time is early time.

00:27:59A minimum five minutes early.

00:28:00Ten minutes early.

00:28:01Fifteen.

00:28:02I've heard about this.

00:28:03Early is on time.

00:28:06On time is late.

00:28:08Late is unacceptable.

00:28:09Ten minutes early.

00:28:10We all ran on Lombardi time.

00:28:14Yeah, we all became

00:28:15compulsive punctuals.

00:28:16The first time I went to,

00:28:18the bus was to leave

00:28:19at 11 o'clock.

00:28:21I got there at 10 of 11.

00:28:22I was five minutes late.

00:28:24As trivial as it seemed,

00:28:26there was a method

00:28:28to his madness.

00:28:30I really think

00:28:31what was behind it

00:28:32was these guys

00:28:33were his guys.

00:28:34They were playing his game

00:28:36under his auspices.

00:28:39And he wanted them

00:28:40to accept what he said

00:28:42and then that became gospel.

00:28:46Here was a man

00:28:47that I just liked

00:28:48from the day we met him

00:28:49in that first meeting.

00:28:50But because I had not shown

00:28:52much in his eyes,

00:28:54I had to work my way up there.

00:28:57A 17th round draft pick

00:28:59in 1956 out of Alabama,

00:29:02Bart Starr had little to show

00:29:04for his brief NFL career.

00:29:06He now had to prove

00:29:08he could be the leader

00:29:09Lombardi wanted him to be.

00:29:11That process would start

00:29:13on the practice field.

00:29:14I throw a pass

00:29:15and it's tipped.

00:29:16The ball is intercepted.

00:29:17And he is chewing

00:29:19my you-know-what out.

00:29:20Just unbelievable.

00:29:23So I said,

00:29:23Coach, may I see you

00:29:24after practice?

00:29:25He said, sure.

00:29:26So I went down

00:29:27to his office

00:29:28and said,

00:29:28Coach, I can take

00:29:30your chewing.

00:29:30That doesn't bother me.

00:29:32And I said,

00:29:32yet you chew my

00:29:33you-know-what out

00:29:35in front of the entire team

00:29:36and yet you want me

00:29:36to be leading that team.

00:29:39Please don't chew me out

00:29:40in front of you.

00:29:41If you want to chew me out

00:29:42with something,

00:29:45He never, ever

00:29:47chewed me out

00:29:48in practice again.

00:29:51I think it was

00:29:52a turning point.

00:29:54He turned a lot

00:29:55of players around.

00:29:57And don't forget

00:30:01hasn't been taught.

00:31:45In only his second season,

00:31:47Lombardi brought Green Bay

00:31:48its first division title

00:31:49in 16 years,

00:31:52to the 1960 NFL title game

00:31:54against the Philadelphia Eagles.

00:31:56The clock continues to run

00:32:50was tested

00:32:51the very next year,

00:32:55reached the title game

00:33:02the New York Giants.

00:33:04What most people didn't know

00:33:06was that the previous winter,

00:33:08Wellington Mara

00:33:09had approached Lombardi

00:33:10about returning to New York

00:33:12to become head coach

00:33:13of the Giants.

00:33:15One paper even reported

00:33:17that Lombardi

00:33:17had submitted his letter

00:33:18of resignation

00:33:19to the Packers.

00:33:22He left New York

00:33:23actually presuming

00:33:25that he would return

00:33:26to New York

00:33:26and be the coach

00:33:27of the Giants.

00:38:38into the Pope

00:38:40He had saved

00:38:41a beloved franchise

00:38:42and restored pride

00:38:44to a humble

00:38:45corner of America.

00:38:48was renamed

00:38:49Titletown

01:19:24goodbye to him

01:19:25and all

01:19:26the Washington Redskins

01:19:28the Giants

01:19:29and once it all

01:19:31came out

01:19:32that the coach

01:19:33was going to die

01:19:33those players

01:19:35flocked in there

01:19:36like
