00:00Mike Cugno is on the Toyota of Hollywood Hotline, sports anchor and reporter on CBS4 here in Miami.
00:06You see him nationally on CBS Sports HQ.
00:10And being such a longtime friend of the show, we know that his Super Bowl meal consisted of granola last night.
00:19Am I correct, Cugno? Did your Super Bowl meal consist of granola?
00:24Not granola.
00:26It's the trail mix bar from Fresh Market, but not granola.
00:33It's not breakfast.
00:36Feel like it's granola.
00:37I had the funniest visual as I was bringing you on, and I just wanted to share it with you.
00:44So Crowder wasn't back in the studio yet, and I was introducing you.
00:49And I saw Jimmy was told by Solana, go get Crowder.
00:53And so Jimmy, not thinking of what his tasks are as the executive producer of the show or the producer of the show, got up and started walking to the door.
01:06And I knew what was about to happen.
01:08I was about to introduce you, and there was going to be no one to punch up your phone line.
01:12So I drew it out to where he had just gotten to the door, and then I said, so let's bring on Mike Cugno.
01:20And it hit him right when he was at the door.
01:23You saw it, Solana, because I know you were watching the same thing.
01:25It hit him right when he got to the door.
01:28Oh, wait a second.
01:29I got to punch up the phone, and I'm leaving right now.
01:32I picked this time to leave.
01:34And he hustled back to punch you up just in time for you to say that you did not have granola as your Super Bowl meal.
01:41You had trail mix.
01:44That's Jimmy.
01:45That's Jimmy playing 4D chess.
01:47That's because he doesn't want me to come on.
01:49So he was like, oh, convenient excuse.
01:51Not true, Cugno.
01:53Not true.
01:54I was ordered to do something else.
01:56Oh, no.
01:56Mike can't come on.
01:58What did you have?
01:58You had trail mix.
01:59Did you watch the game at CBS?
02:02Of course.
02:03Yeah.
02:03Yeah.
02:03Yeah.
02:04I watched it on my little 19-inch TV that's right on my desk.
02:08So you guys have to do a Sunday night sports show and everything, even though the Super Bowl is going on?
02:13Yeah.
02:13Yeah.
02:14But that's the cool part because the Super Bowl makes it easy because you have this big game.
02:21You have this reaction.
02:21There's all this stuff that goes on within the game itself.
02:25But who would be watching local sports on CBS 4 when the Super Bowl is going on?
02:31Wouldn't the sports fans be watching NBC?
02:34Who's not?
02:35Who's not?
02:36You know what I mean?
02:37You need a little Olympic break, a Super Bowl break.
02:39You turn on CBS 4.
02:41You see Mike Cugno doing it.
02:42You need a Super Bowl break in the fourth quarter?
02:45This is when you take your break?
02:48After watching Drake May get hit in the mouth over and over, you're like, all right, all right.
02:52You know what?
02:53Maybe we need a little palate cleansing here.
02:55Did you have Solana on?
02:59No, we didn't.
03:00We didn't.
03:00We tried to be as accommodating as possible to our guests this week.
03:05Go enjoy the Super Bowl.
03:06Don't worry about coming on.
03:08Don't worry about going away from your Super Bowl parties.
03:10We'll take care of it.
03:12We don't want to interrupt.
03:13No, it was me and Jalen Gilkey.
03:17I don't know how you can, like, Latin the Gilkey, but yeah, we'll try.
03:22But, Cugno, I'm not a 50 to 40 football fan.
03:28I don't like games like that.
03:30That game was even boring to me.
03:31Was it a break from the boredom?
03:33Because you said they need a break from excitement.
03:35No, no.
03:37See, I know I'm different, and I'm really not being contrarian, but I love that first half.
03:41I know there was a lot of – there was like 18 punts.
03:45But, man, I found so many, like, interesting, like, little battles that were going on.
03:49Like, Christian Gonzalez has cemented himself as one of the top corners in the NFL to me.
03:55I mean, he basically saved two touchdowns.
03:57That game could have been a lot worse.
04:00I love the defensive football stuff.
04:02I love sort of the chess match.
04:04Then you go back to, like, the Miami-Texas A&M game.
04:06I love that game so much.
04:07It was one of my favorite games of the entire postseason run for any team,
04:12just because it was, like, this field position thing that was going on the entire time.
04:17It was – I liked the game.
04:19I really did enjoy the defensive performance from both teams in that first half.
04:23Maybe it's because you were watching it on the 19-inch TV with a bowl of oatmeal.
04:27It felt old school.
04:28You know what I mean?
04:29It was like – yeah.
04:31I mean, my television isn't even, like, color corrected.
04:34Like, I look up, and, like, people are wearing different colors.
04:36I'm like, wait, what am I watching?
04:38Like, she's got a blue suit on now.
04:40It looks yellow on my TV.
04:42So, yeah.
04:43How about this?
04:45Coming out of that game, seed the AFC East for next season.
04:49Would you have the Patriots as the best team in the AFC East next season?
04:55No, no.
04:56It's probably the Bills.
04:58Yeah.
04:59The Bills, I just – you know, it was a weird year.
05:04Look, Denver, if Bo Nix doesn't get hurt,
05:07Denver isn't obviously going to be in that game last night.
05:11But that Broncos defense is for real.
05:16The Denver offense can give you just enough to win some of these games,
05:19which is what you saw against the Bills.
05:22So, I think the Bills, they'll go back.
05:26The Patriots, they did have an easy schedule.
05:29You can't deny it.
05:31I mean, they – and then a lot of things broke their way, including Bo Nix's foot.
05:36So, like, that's how they end up in the Super Bowl.
05:39And, you know, I give them credit for the defensive effort they put up,
05:43but that was tough to watch offensively from them.
05:45There was a point leading up to this game, Kunio,
05:48where people were talking about Drake May as one of the top five quarterbacks
05:53in the NFL.
05:54And maybe not, like, currently, but just what he did this year, MVP conversation.
05:58You would take him over, maybe Lamar Jackson, comparing him to Josh Allen,
06:03the best in – the best quarterbacks in the game.
06:06Did yesterday's performance change that for you personally?
06:10Do you still think he's got it?
06:13I – yeah.
06:13No, I think the ceiling is still very high on him.
06:17I don't think – to me, he was never – I wouldn't have put him in the top five.
06:21So, first of all, the top three, that tier of Mahomes, Allen, Lamar,
06:26is so hard to close the gap between four and those guys, right?
06:32Like, four and five, whoever you want your next quarterbacks to be.
06:35I'm – those three stand out above the rest for me.
06:40He's got – I mean, look, he led his team to a Super Bowl.
06:44You can't – at the very least, you can't take that away from him.
06:47He had flashes.
06:48He beat the teams in front of them.
06:50And those are the things you ask your quarterback to do.
06:52That's why, you know, at times it's frustrating for the Dolphins
06:55when they lose to teams you thought were lessers
06:57because you're not getting that kind of quarterback play when you expect it.
07:00So, you know, he's beating the Bills.
07:02He's going toe-to-toe with Josh Allen.
07:04Now, his ceiling is still very high.
07:07His future is still very bright.
07:09He deserved to be an MVP candidate this year.
07:12But I wouldn't put him top five yet.
07:16I think there are still a few guys who are ahead of him.
07:19But he's – he'll be on his way.
07:21I just don't want to take the Super Bowl, this one-game sample size,
07:25against that defense, what they look like.
07:28You know, it looked like Richard Sherman and Cam Chancellor
07:31and those guys were back out there last night.
07:32That was – that's about as impressive as you can ask for
07:35of a defensive performance in the Super Bowl.
07:37And, you know, maybe it was youth and experience.
07:40At times, like some of those throws behind Hunter Henry,
07:43getting him knocked around that game,
07:46maybe just the lights were a little bit too big for him.
07:48But year two to take a team to the Super Bowl, it's not bad.
07:52And it's funny.
07:53I thought about this when you were talking about the AFC matchup too.
07:56And Hawk said earlier in the show, he's like,
07:58now it's Halfley's time.
08:00And we know we have a lot of problems in Miami trying to figure it out.
08:02But even thinking about it, Denver, top 10 defense.
08:06Pats, top 10 defense.
08:07Rams, top 10 defense.
08:08Seattle, top 10 defense.
08:09Is that – should that encourage us down here?
08:12Because I know Hawk was joking.
08:13But as you were talking, I kind of thought about it.
08:15Like, damn, these top 10 defenses are making it to the championship games
08:19and now the Super Bowl.
08:21Yeah, yeah.
08:22I mean, look, I mean, if that's the silver lining in all this,
08:25that you've got defensive guys, your head coach,
08:27maybe to bring some of that toughness back.
08:28And, you know, I even think – go back, go to your –
08:30even the offensive side of the ball.
08:33I posted the clip from Bobby Slowick this week when I got to talk to him
08:37about how when he was in San Francisco,
08:38they used to track their opponents' records after they played –
08:43or after the teams played the 49ers just to see how beat up they were.
08:47And they took pride in that.
08:49And you'd see teams, like, lose the game immediately after playing the 49ers.
08:53And that was something they really, like, relished in.
08:56So I kind of like that physical mentality, that fast and violent thing
09:00that they're preaching now.
09:01You just want to see it, you know, you just want to see it in action.
09:05You know, Hathaway had a top 10 defense a couple years ago in Green Bay.
09:09Yeah, I mean, look, you got to win – you need a defense to win championships.
09:13I know that's an old adage, but, man, did the Seahawks ever prove that was true.
09:16Were you able to pay attention to the commercials while you were eating your porridge?
09:22I got to say, you know, mid-scoop of porridge while, you know, the three bears were sleeping,
09:31I was trying to focus on the commercials.
09:34Very underwhelmed by them.
09:35Nothing ever caught my eye.
09:37Ooh, I thought there were some good ones.
09:39Yeah, because you know what?
09:40Usually they catch you early.
09:43Oh, and this is my other thing about Super Bowl commercials.
09:44Now, why are we putting them out before the Super Bowl?
09:47A lot of them sometimes, like, air, like, you see them on YouTube
09:50or they come out early or you get, like, sneak peeks.
09:53Like, I don't want any sneak peeks to this.
09:54This is supposed to be a big unveiling.
09:57So, yeah, I was underwhelmed on the commercial.
09:59Did you have a favorite?
10:00Nothing stood out.
10:01No, nothing stood out.
10:02Really?
10:02I can't remember a single commercial.
10:05The baby chicken that turned into an eagle on the Clydesdale?
10:09No, don't even remember that.
10:11Don't even remember that.
10:12Stop it.
10:12You could be making that up.
10:13You could be making that up.
10:15No, it was a little baby horse, and he went and met a baby chicken.
10:18Next thing you know, it was an eagle in a Clydesdale.
10:20What about the Ben Affleck-Duncan commercial that was, like, a 90s sitcom?
10:26But, yeah, we knew that was coming.
10:28I didn't.
10:28They had kind of promoted that all week.
10:31Unless it's Seal as an actual Seal.
10:34I don't know if we can go back, you know?
10:37Man, I thought there were some good ones.
10:39How about Sabrina Carpenter dating a Pringles man?
10:41Yeah, see, I didn't.
10:45Then her and the fans ate him.
10:46That was a weird commercial.
10:48That was a weird commercial.
10:49She was dating a guy made out of Pringles, and then he fell down and everyone just ate him.
10:56Hmm.
10:57Oh, you know, RIP.
11:00Sorry for your loss.
11:01Well, it begs the question, though.
11:04If you were dating a girl made out of Pringles and she fell down, would you just eat her?
11:09By the way, that would be my nightmare.
11:12Oh, that's right.
11:12Yeah, you would have to date a girl made out of oatmeal and raisins.
11:17Is it original Pringles?
11:19Is it cheese?
11:20Is it sour cream and onion?
11:22You've got to be unsalted.
11:25How about Bad Bunny?
11:26What did you think of the halftime performance?
11:27It looked like a party, which I think that's all you want out of halftime performances.
11:33You just want it to look and feel like a party.
11:36You have some cool cameos.
11:38I was fine with it.
11:39I couldn't really understand him, but, you know, I know I'm not the only one.
11:45Couldn't really understand him or couldn't understand him at all?
11:49No, I thought maybe it's just me, but, like, the mic is so tight to his mouth, like, it was kind of muffled.
11:54Is that maybe I'm the only one there?
11:56He's got a weird way of singing.
11:58He doesn't sing like he's doing a stadium anthem the way that you see Prince do it or the way that you see U2 or whatever.
12:07It's more talkative, isn't it, Solana?
12:10I mean, you've seen him a million times.
12:12Yeah, I mean, he's not a singer, to be fair.
12:14He's a re-ton artist, but he's really like a trap star.
12:17That's how he made his mark in the music industry.
12:19There are songs where he sings, but for the most part, he's a rapper slash reggaeton trap star.
12:27What's a trap star?
12:29Well, it's a genre of music, trap music, Spanish trap.
12:33Yeah, I'm terrible, dude.
12:35Oh, I thought you said he was a track star, and I was immediately thinking, no, Joe.
12:39Not the way he was holding that football.
12:41He's not an athlete.
12:42He was the leading rusher.
12:44By the way, by the way, high and tight, that thing was not coming out.
12:48That thing was not coming out.
12:51Great technique.
12:54What number you have on 64?
12:56Who was the old Giants running back that used to run with it high and tight like that because he always fumbled?
13:03Ron Dane?
13:04Tiki Barber.
13:04Tiki Barber used to hold the ball way up on his neck for no reason.
13:08Yeah.
13:09So he was actually speaking.
13:11We've got to be the only radio show breaking down Bad Bunny's running back skills.
13:20I mean, great techniques.
13:22Great technique.
13:22Yeah, no, that's fair.
13:24I mean, it's fair.
13:25I mean, Kenneth Walker barely edged him for total yards.
13:28It's like 135 to 124 or something.
13:31It wasn't, you know, that MVP could have gone a different way.
13:34Cuno, Kalen Balazs or Bad Bunny as your running back?
13:37I think I'm taking Bad Bunny, man.
13:39Oh, man.
13:40I'll take his entourage.
13:42I didn't know he was speaking.
13:45And it was interesting, too, that he was doing like a whole Field of Dreams vibe, but it was a football game.
13:51That may have worked better in the All-Star game, right, when he walked out of the cornfields?
13:56This is Donna.
13:57Bad Bunny would be a great running back nickname.
14:00You know, like he had Muscle Hamster.
14:01Bad Bunny, like, you know, because the raps are quick.
14:04I like, you know, someone's got to take that.
14:06All right.
14:07It took him eight minutes to get up that light pole.
14:09I don't know if he's too quick.
14:14Okay, one interception in the NFL, guy.
14:18I'm more athletic than Bad Bunny, Salala.
14:21Goodness.
14:22Not anymore.
14:22All right.
14:24He's going to dub a running back Bad Bunny this season.
14:28He's dubbed you the old tugboat.
14:31Cuno's got away with nicknames.
14:33All right, Cuno.
14:33We appreciate your time.
14:35See you, guys.
