00:08I was the kid that shouldn't have made it.
00:10How about Clint Dempsey coming on?
00:12Texas kid on the field.
00:15Kid from Nacogdoches, Texas.
00:17Nacognoe, where some people would say.
00:20Dempsey, as you said, plenty of history for the U.S.
00:23Scored big goals.
00:25I was confident and I worked hard.
00:27I was very competitive.
00:29The Texas kid tied the all-time record and sealed the semi-final.
00:33I probably rubbed people the wrong way
00:35because I didn't give a shit what people thought about me.
00:40Dempsey through the wall.
00:43Tied for the all-time record.
00:45I mean, it's kind of one of those things I wasn't going to be denied.
00:50Clint is very proud of where he grew up.
00:53This is the first field I'll ever play soccer on.
00:56I'm also really proud of having to fight for everything he ever got.
00:59These actually used to be the soccer fields for the Mexican League.
01:01He got the toughness there in the Mexican League.
01:03You could see that everybody feared Clint.
01:06Clint's got that switch where he just kind of loses it slightly.
01:09Dempsey, I don't normally see him that angry.
01:12And Clint looks at you, you know, he looks like he wants to kill you.
01:15And I have respect for that.
01:17It's like a gene that's born into him that he is so hungry.
01:21And so he had to kind of fight and claw his way to every bit of success and every opportunity
01:25in ways that maybe other kids from other families didn't have to.
01:30So I think it's kind of always been in him and it's still there.
01:35It wasn't easy for Clint.
01:36So far from home, so far from parents that cared about him.
01:39Clint Dempsey Doodle.
01:42I remember Steve Nichol called me and said, there's something special here.
01:45If you've got a chance to draft this kid, take him.
01:48The New England Revolution select Clint Dempsey.
01:51I'd like to thank New England. I'm just looking forward to this opportunity.
01:54And I give him my best. Thanks.
01:55You're talking to a guy who played with a broken jaw three games before we actually found out.
02:00I mean, who does that?
02:01That was him. Like, he stepped in from day one and didn't back down from anybody.
02:05Dempsey, the runner, the shot, the save, it's over.
02:08DC wins up power.
02:10You think that they're going to count him out and then he proves you wrong.
02:20Clint sort of comes in with this fanfare and this young kid who's brash
02:24and talented.
02:26I feel like everyone has their time.
02:28When Clint came on the scene, it was Clint's time.
02:31Clint Dempsey is the man who scored the best goal I've ever seen in my life.
02:35The chip.
02:35The chip against you then is.
02:38Oh, I can see this window.
02:40I still got the scar right here.
02:41He had this personal belief that he was going to make it no matter what.
02:44There we go.
02:45I just knew that there was not much out there going to be tougher than that that I would face.
02:48It's a long way from home.
02:48This ain't that town.
02:49Boom!
02:51We just thought that was normal to have a trailer in your grandma's pasture.
02:55Clint's the guy now that is almost like plucked out of a Greek tragedy.
02:59He gave everything.
03:02There wasn't anything left to give.
03:03Have you made up your mind?
03:04If your job's on the line, you want me in the game because I'm going to die for you.
03:08I'm going to run through a brick wall.
03:09He had to create a narrative that people were against him.
03:14Sometimes that was me.
03:15Dempsey has been so tall.
03:17You know, when you get treated wrong, you start acting crazy.
03:19Yeah.
03:20And now you're the soccer player.
03:22Baby, go ahead!
03:23Get out of here!
03:24Clint Dempsey is being tested for in a regular heartbeat.
03:27I mean, your heart is beating out of your chest.
03:29Once that's already happened, that was the beginning of the end for me.
03:33It was so stressful.
03:34All he really ever wanted to do was win.
03:37He wanted it so bad.
03:40Had Clint been any different, we wouldn't be here talking about him.
03:44Talking about the legend that he is.
03:47Because he would have failed.
03:48He had to be himself.
03:49That's how he became one of the best players ever in this country.
03:53Hit Dempsey!
03:54Who else?
03:55What a goal!
03:57There's no greater on him.
03:59Dempsey!
04:01Astonishing!
04:03I'm going to go out there and fight.
04:05I'm not trying to make friends.
04:08My mentality is make those motherfuckers play you.
04:12Make them play you.
04:30This is our home.
04:34Like Lotus, Texas.
04:42I've lived here all my life.
04:45You were born here.
04:46Yeah, I was born here.
04:47I've been here since the fourth grade.
04:52My parents all lived here.
04:54Aubrey worked on the railroad and raised cattle.
04:58I worked at the hospital.
04:59It wasn't that far.
05:01We had five kids.
05:03Real easy.
05:03And wanted them to be able to experience what it was like to grow up here.
05:09But they were dreaming that we would have this wonderful journey together.
05:14Actually, it's crazy.
05:17Get the volume up.
05:19Just don't make it too loud.
05:21I wonder if this is like third grade or fourth grade.
05:2489.
05:25He's born in 83.
05:28I'm trying to get back to the beginning.
05:30I don't even know what is on this.
05:32He's not 16.
05:33Wait, wait, wait, wait.
05:34See, I can't even tell.
05:36I'm so sorry.
05:37That's too much pressure.
05:41Alex, can you bring a foot hand please?
05:43Yeah.
05:45Here we go.
05:45Stand by.
05:48Oh shit.
05:49Let's do it.
05:52Where are you from, dog?
05:54Where I'm from?
05:56Nacogdoches, Texas.
05:59Oh, Nacogdoches.
06:00Nacognowhere.
06:02I don't even know what to, how to begin.
06:05Oh my, we've heard them.
06:08Nacognowhere.
06:09Nacogatrocious.
06:10Yeah.
06:11Nope.
06:13I've never heard that, but that sounds pretty good too.
06:15Yeah.
06:18What you got, man?
06:20Oh, wow, wow.
06:21That's it.
06:22Oh, you got one.
06:23I come from a very competitive family.
06:25My dad played baseball, was a linebacker in football, and my mom played softball and did
06:30other sports as well.
06:30So being competitive and being in sports, I think it was just to keep us out of trouble and keep
06:35us tired.
06:35So when we got home, we weren't messing up the house because there wasn't a whole lot of room to
06:39begin with, with all seven of us living in a trailer.
06:42So, you know, on a good day with that many people, the house was always a mess.
06:46But we didn't know any better.
06:47We just thought that was normal to have a trailer in your grandma's pasture.
06:51It was your mom and dad.
06:52My mom and dad.
06:54They had about two and a half acres, so I moved a trailer over there.
06:58We lived there, what, a couple of years?
06:59Mm-hmm.
07:00It was a huge pasture with, like, chickens and dogs.
07:04And there was, like, a little trail that we would run to back and forth from nanny and papa's just
07:09whenever we would want to.
07:10It was great.
07:11It would be like, okay, our parents aren't being nice.
07:13We're going to run over to grandparents' house.
07:15Basically, from sunup to sundown, we're out there playing whatever sport you can think of and then doing it all
07:20again the next day during the summertime.
07:22We were just outside all the time, barefoot in the pasture.
07:26Just kids being wild, kids having fun, and a lot of good memories, for sure.
07:32Is it recording or you've got to push your button?
07:34It's recording now.
07:36Okay, so Ryan is the oldest, and then it was Jennifer, and then me, I'm the middle.
07:42And then in 83, we had a little runt named Clint.
07:46And then Lance was born in 85.
07:48So there were a lot of us.
07:49And mom worked crazy hours.
07:51Dad did as well.
07:52I was doing railroad construction at one point, switched to carpentry.
07:55Six, seven days a week, 12-hour shifts.
07:59Crazy hours like that.
08:00Yeah, it was crazy.
08:01But it was a lot of fun.
08:03That's why I ended up having five kids.
08:06You know, we had a really good childhood.
08:08We were always surrounded by our cousins and our family.
08:11And it was just like a lot of love, a lot of support.
08:14And we try to do it for our kids more now,
08:17because we want our kids to have the same childhood that we had.
08:21As far as I know, we didn't need for much.
08:24Our parents provided what we needed to keep us happy.
08:26I never felt like I went without.
08:28Okay, this is my favorite part.
08:32Who's winning?
08:34And then he goes,
08:36That's so cute.
08:37So, good hunting, good fishing.
08:40That's kind of what my childhood I think about the most.
08:44It was everything a kid could hope for.
08:46But I mean, entertainment-wise, hmm.
08:50So kids have to be creative with their activities.
08:52Sometimes that can lead to trouble.
08:55But sometimes it can lead to greatness.
08:58Look at this kid.
08:59He's about to run this kid over.
09:00Watch this.
09:01Boom!
09:03Dude, I'm getting dizzy watching this.
09:06I like how you have your first name on the jersey.
09:08Like, you're Brazilian or something.
09:10I got him a wedgie out.
09:12Am I literally going to just kick the ball to the other team?
09:14Yeah.
09:15What are you doing, dude?
09:20Control, Clint, control!
09:22Control, Clint, control!
09:24What does that even mean?
09:26Oh, here's some control.
09:29Oh!
09:29Oh!
09:31I knew I could help you.
09:33I knew I could help you out.
09:34I think I'd throw up the peace out.
09:39I don't know what that would.
09:41I think I'd do a peace out to my family.
09:42Yeah!
09:43Yeah!
09:44Hey!
09:44Hey!
09:45Hey!
09:46Hey!
09:49Rob, what do you think is the quickest way to get the building?
09:53I'd say just continue down.
09:55all the way down North Street?
09:56Yeah.
09:58Sorry, the road was a little bumpy.
10:01I'm going to take go to the first fields I played on.
10:04You know, growing up in Nacogdoches in those days, we had no clue what soccer was
10:09except for some youth sport you need to put your kids into.
10:12It had that stigma.
10:14When you tell people what sport you play and why, they look at you confused.
10:17Why aren't you playing baseball, basketball, football?
10:19But for me, it was just you get to go out there and have fun.
10:22There was just something about it that I loved, right?
10:25We came to find out that there was a Latin community here in Nacogdoches
10:28that all kind of lived the sport.
10:30And if you go north, that's this one part of town where we call it Under the Bridge.
10:34There were men playing soccer almost every day.
10:37These actually used to be the soccer fields for the Mexican League.
10:40We called it Under the Bridge because there's a bridge over there.
10:43And it used to be all dirt.
10:44There was no grasp from all the play that was on it.
10:47I was playing football with them on weekends.
10:50Their toughness, their athleticism, and their skill really changed my perspective on this sport
10:56that I thought was a kid's game.
10:57I had no clue that that's how you played the game.
11:00All right, Ryan!
11:01All right, Ryan!
11:03I was so confused.
11:04Why weren't they just going direct to goal like what we did?
11:07When you realize there's control, I didn't have that.
11:10I could kick it and run.
11:11I was just like, this is cool.
11:13It's different.
11:13I wanted more.
11:14From a young age, my brother Ron had a big influence.
11:17It was more difficult for him because he didn't have anybody that was showing him the way.
11:21And I was lucky enough to learn from his situations and benefit from it.
11:24I always needed somebody to pass the ball with.
11:27So I would say to him, you obviously like doing this.
11:29You're five years younger than me.
11:30And I think he needed somebody that was passionate, maybe a couple steps ahead of him.
11:34So I kind of inserted myself as a coach.
11:37They would set up goals and it got pretty intense.
11:40They'd take a trampoline and turn it up on the side and they'd kicked it and it fell over the
11:45truck.
11:46And then in the hood.
11:48And then in the hood.
11:49Around then, we had a satellite dish the size of our house.
11:52And you'd kind of get some distorted games on TV if one of us were out there pushing the satellite
11:59kind of manually by hand.
12:00We watched a lot of international teams play on TV.
12:04Mexican League, Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia.
12:07That was kind of the style that we liked to watch and try to like copy the moves.
12:12And my brother exposing me to international soccer.
12:15You know, I think at a young age seeing that, I started being like, okay, like maybe I do belong
12:20in this game.
12:22Yeah, I mean played on all these fields.
12:24Also played some Mexican League games over there.
12:28Dude, what was harder, playing the Mexican League games or the Premier League?
12:31Oh, dude, man.
12:33Probably the Mexican League games was something I'm high.
12:35It's like, they always wanted to play a game at 12 o'clock, 1 o'clock.
12:40I remember the first training session I ever had.
12:43This was the goal.
12:44That was the other goal.
12:45And I just remember running from the vehicle across the field to join training.
12:50So this is the first field I ever played organized soccer on.
12:56Make it happen.
12:59Even at rec soccer and agadoches, he was always playing up an age.
13:03There you go.
13:04He was kind of a natural with the ball in ways that other kids that age were not.
13:09Take it out.
13:10There you go.
13:12This age, you're just so blessed and happy that your parents are taking you to stuff.
13:16And you get to be a kid and you're just loving life.
13:19I never thought growing up that they would have named a field after me.
13:23I was just happy to be playing a sport.
13:26You know, this is where it all kind of started for me, man.
13:29Hopefully it's something that inspires others.
13:31No matter where you come from, even if you're from a small town, you can do big things.
13:35I wasn't supposed to be the person that made it.
13:37There's a lot of people from Texas that kind of fall through the cracks and don't get those chances.
13:41But I just think it's important when you're from somewhere that's small that you think big.
13:47Were they competitive?
13:49Oh, God, yes.
13:50They're still competitive.
13:51I think everybody was competitive in my family.
13:54Everybody wanted to win and everybody wanted to talk shit about doing it.
13:57We're very intense, I guess you would say.
13:59But Clint, I would sometimes think that he was the calmer one.
14:02Clint was so sweet.
14:03Like, he was the one I said might end up being a priest.
14:06He was just so kind and soft.
14:09But it changed.
14:10Headline and everything.
14:14I think it was fourth grade.
14:15We were playing kickball, boys versus girls.
14:18And the coach ended up cheating so that the girls could win.
14:22I think he ended up...
14:24Whacking him.
14:25Whacking the coach.
14:26With the ball?
14:27Or did he...
14:27His fist.
14:28Might have hit him.
14:29I don't know.
14:30I had enough to jump up and try to swing on him.
14:34So, you know, I was a kid.
14:35I had to jump up pretty high to hit somebody in fourth grade.
14:39But I tried.
14:40And I think that's when I knew that that's not normal.
14:42You shouldn't be doing that kind of stuff.
14:44But I remember the coach was Coach Long.
14:46So apologies, coach.
14:48But...
14:55So, do you even know what the name of the documentary is?
14:59Nope, I don't know.
15:00But I bet you're about to tell me.
15:03This is no bullshit.
15:04The name of the documentary is...
15:06You Don't Know Where I'm From.
15:11Yes, I love it.
15:14That's a slogan, isn't it?
15:15Well, the Champions League is back.
15:17And so, by popular demand, is one of our favorite segments.
15:20You know, on the Champions League show,
15:21we play a game called In The Mixer
15:23where we just ask kind of like random questions
15:25to see what kind of answers it'll throw up.
15:26Just interesting stuff from people's career.
15:28What is the funniest thing that an opponent has said to you on the pitch?
15:31And Micah's answer was something that Clint Dempsey had said to him.
15:35You don't know where I'm from, dawg.
15:38You don't know where I'm from, dawg.
15:40I can't do the accent.
15:41You know, with past games,
15:42my mind's always a little bit hazy, let's just say.
15:45I tackled him and he pushed me.
15:46I said to push her,
15:47you don't know where I'm from, dawg.
15:49He was always a tricky player.
15:51He's one of those guys who's annoying, really annoying.
15:54When I sort of see Clint
15:56and I see that sort of glint in his eyes,
16:00it's definitely a little screw loose.
16:02Not fully off, but a little bit loose, I'd say.
16:05September the 22nd, 2007.
16:09I was sort of a big deal back then.
16:11And I just had it in my mind that
16:13he's not getting the better of me.
16:15You know, Micah was young.
16:16He had an ego.
16:17He thought he was something special.
16:18Clint had that kind of chip on his shoulder
16:20about, I'm an American player.
16:21They're disrespecting me over here.
16:23They don't understand who I am.
16:24And so I can totally see that, you know,
16:26sparking some kind of altercation.
16:28And Clint, at that age,
16:29when he looks at you,
16:31you know, he looks like he wants to kill you.
16:34And I have respect for that.
16:36We have around about a quarter of the match to go.
16:40And Dempsey and Richards, head to head.
16:43He was giving arms, everything.
16:46You know how Americans could be?
16:47So we sort of squared up.
16:49And he sort of looked back at me and he goes,
16:52you don't know where I'm from, dog.
16:53And I was like, what?
16:55Who does this guy think he is?
16:57Let's get up. Let's reenact it.
16:59Reenact it?
17:01Clint's got that switch
17:02where he just kind of loses it slightly.
17:04You don't want this.
17:05And then what?
17:06You don't want this.
17:07Head to head.
17:07Head to head.
17:09What's he saying?
17:10What's he saying?
17:11Basically, he said,
17:12you don't know where I'm from, dog.
17:14It's like inbred in him.
17:16He has that hustle.
17:17And it's like a gene that's born into him
17:19that he is so hungry.
17:20And I think it's, you know, in part,
17:22it's coming from the circumstances he came from
17:24where things weren't given for him
17:25and they didn't come easy.
17:27I'm from the oldest town, Texas.
17:28Nacogdoches is where I'm from.
17:30Nacogdoches?
17:30Yeah.
17:31Okay.
17:31What did you say?
17:32I said I'm from Chapel Town.
17:36And so I think that Clint had to kind of fight
17:38and claw his way to every bit of success
17:40and every opportunity
17:41in ways that maybe other kids
17:43from other families didn't have to.
17:44And so I think it's kind of always been in him
17:47and he can't get rid of it.
17:49It's still there.
18:01It's still there.
18:02Yeah, we have a lot of people playing.
18:04We've been playing here for about 30 years.
18:07We've been playing here for about 30 years.
18:08We've been playing here for about 30 years.
18:11It's part of our life.
18:13It's the fun that we have here in Nacogdoches.
18:16Football, Saturday and Sunday.
18:18The Mexican League, real intense.
18:21Like, there's been a bunch of fights here.
18:24Like, almost every weekend there's a fight.
18:27It's crazy.
18:29I think that's where you get, like,
18:31most of your aggression from.
18:33Playing with these grown men,
18:35they try to push you around.
18:36It makes you stronger, you know?
18:52It was my son Victor's first year of playing soccer
18:55when I first met Clint.
18:57Him and Victor got along pretty good.
18:58And I remember Clint used to call me Pops,
19:01you know, second dad.
19:02You had a nickname for him, too, right?
19:04Oh, el bolillo.
19:07El bolillo is a Mexican bread,
19:09but we usually call white people bolillo.
19:13He was a dedicated kid.
19:15Him and Victor, nothing but soccer, soccer, soccer, soccer.
19:17They were both good.
19:19But Clint, he was special.
19:34It was, like, the closest thing to really playing like a real game.
19:39We enjoyed it.
19:40The kids on my varsity team that I played with,
19:43we formed our own team.
19:45We kind of play against the older dudes and talk shit
19:47if we were able to beat them and go out there and you battle.
19:50It was serious.
19:51It was some fouls, let me tell you.
19:53They weren't the most sportswear like.
19:55You needed to wear shin guards.
19:59They did what they had to do.
20:00Yeah, they got beat up.
20:02But Clint learned real quick.
20:03If they see you getting physical yourself,
20:05they're going to stop.
20:06And pretty soon, they couldn't do nothing to him no more.
20:09They couldn't do nothing.
20:10When he would score, I mean, he didn't show any mercy.
20:13He went around in front of everybody,
20:15over around the sidelines, you know,
20:17making gestures.
20:19They'd get so mad.
20:21The crowd would hate him.
20:23And I was like, I don't think this is safe.
20:25Clint was running all over them guys.
20:27And he was pissing them off, really.
20:30Clint would tell them in Spanish.
20:32Hey, wait,
20:41Clint's a gamer, period.
20:44I mean, if he's hunting,
20:45he's trying to get the biggest buck.
20:47If he's fishing,
20:48he's trying to get the biggest fish.
20:51And he'll stay out there all day, too,
20:52until he gets it.
20:56Clint was the most competitive.
20:59The game's not over,
21:00fishing's not over,
21:01until he wins.
21:03If you want to quit and go inside,
21:05you kind of,
21:06just kind of have to call it.
21:12We're going to catch a big one.
21:17Having older siblings
21:18that you got to compete with,
21:20them talking trash to you,
21:21you got to be able to back it up.
21:23Because they always wanted to, you know,
21:25show you that they were bigger and badder,
21:27and started to close that gap on them,
21:30and it felt good for payback,
21:31that was for sure.
21:33A little bit.
21:36You got to hold it close,
21:37make it look bigger.
21:38That's what we do.
21:39We just catch them,
21:41put them back.
21:42Let's see if we can get a bigger one than that, though.
21:45Can't have us looking like that,
21:46just catching a little minnow, bro.
21:48I think it's important to have confidence.
21:50If anything,
21:50what I learned from my siblings
21:51and my family,
21:52is you got to believe in yourself.
21:54If you don't,
21:54no one else will.
21:55And it was kind of like,
21:56if you're going to go do something, do it.
21:57Give it your all.
21:59Nothing less than your best.
22:00And in fifth grade,
22:01I had to make the choice
22:03to be all in in one thing,
22:04because this is such a sacrifice
22:05for our family to make.
22:06And they said,
22:07are you willing to do that?
22:08And I said, yeah.
22:09I'll go all the way with soccer then.
22:13Oh, come on.
22:14Did you get one?
22:17Man, that's why I'm struggling
22:18to set the hook, man.
22:19I've been catching up a little bitty.
22:20I'm just glad you're catching something.
22:23Number two,
22:25but still a little bitty.
22:27I mean,
22:28I think everybody's mission was
22:30to try to get a scholarship
22:31to take that burden off my parents.
22:34Hey, mom and dad,
22:35y'all want to know
22:35where I caught that fish?
22:36Where?
22:37Hey, right there.
22:38Look, it caught right there.
22:39Oh, you're so funny.
22:41That's a dad joke.
22:43Uh-oh.
22:44He's fishing.
22:44You can't stand it.
22:46He's going to show you up.
22:47Oh, hell no.
22:50I mean,
22:50you knew the sacrifices
22:51that your parents were making,
22:52and here I am in fifth grade
22:54thinking about college
22:55because of my brother's
22:56thinking about college.
22:57He's in high school,
22:57so everybody was just
22:59trying to figure out
23:00the next step.
23:01Uh-oh, here comes Ryan.
23:04When I was about 13,
23:06I already had my sights
23:08set up playing Mexican League.
23:09The best bartender
23:10in the family,
23:12Ryan Dipsy.
23:13That's right.
23:13And I finally earned my right
23:15to be on one of the teams
23:16under the bridge.
23:17You're all right.
23:18But my mom would have to go
23:19drop me off with these men.
23:21Thanks, bro.
23:21And there was a player there
23:23who was really good.
23:25He was a college kid.
23:26He was impressed by me
23:27and asked me,
23:28he was like,
23:28man, you're a pretty decent player.
23:30Like, are you thinking
23:31about going to play college?
23:32And I was like,
23:33well, yeah.
23:34It's on now.
23:35It's starting.
23:35They got the best spots, actually.
23:36Oh, please.
23:38So he's like,
23:38well, who do you play for now?
23:39Like, I play for Ponderosa,
23:41which was the name
23:41of a neighboring trailer park.
23:44And he was like,
23:44no, you have to go to Dallas
23:47to play.
23:48There's no college coach
23:49that's going to come
23:50to your Ponderosa games.
23:52Well, right after that,
23:53all I never talked about
23:54was him going
23:56and maybe Plink could come too.
23:59Found out about a team
24:00in Dallas called the Longhorns
24:01and we showed up.
24:03They've already picked the team.
24:04It was too late.
24:05But there was an age group
24:06that still was doing their tryout.
24:08And I think they just wanted
24:09to see what's this crazy family
24:10driving all this way
24:11to what are they about?
24:13I remember my dad
24:14drove me up there
24:15thinking, what the hell?
24:16Probably that's the last thing
24:17he wanted to do.
24:18But my mom told my dad
24:19to do something.
24:20He's going to do it.
24:20That's just how it always worked.
24:25No, he don't got one, does he?
24:26Oh, what's the score?
24:28Now what's the score?
24:29Man, I got to change the lure.
24:31Man, that lure ain't working right.
24:33He got out of the truck
24:35with the ball
24:36and he dribbled it up
24:36to the goal
24:37and the Longhorns coach said,
24:39I want him.
24:40And I said, well,
24:42I just started laughing.
24:43I said, well,
24:43let him practice
24:44and then you make a decision
24:46after the practice.
24:47Next thing you know,
24:48we're at a signing party
24:49and my mom's thinking
24:50we wrecked on the side of the road.
24:52We finally got home.
24:53She's like, what the hell?
24:53Where y'all been?
24:54He's like,
24:55we ended up signing to the team.
25:07Dallas was definitely
25:08a hotbed for soccer.
25:11The Dallas Classic League
25:13was very strong
25:14and I think that he,
25:16you know,
25:16it was important
25:17that he got to play
25:18against those players
25:19and be seen.
25:20But I realised
25:21what an incredible journey
25:22that was for them to take
25:24and a real commitment.
25:26I just don't know
25:26how many people
25:27would do that.
25:29It was twice a week you'd go.
25:31It was three hours one way,
25:32three hours back.
25:33You're at least in the vehicle
25:3512 hours every week
25:37for this sport
25:38that in Texas
25:39people didn't really see
25:41a clear path
25:42to go do something great.
25:44It is such a long
25:46and hard drive.
25:47But Clint was always on time.
25:49He was one of the earliest
25:50players there
25:51and he would help me
25:51put up the movable goal.
25:53And I think that commitment
25:55is just amazing.
25:56We ended up buying an RV
25:58because we would drive
25:59back and forth
26:00and then we'd be sitting there,
26:01you know,
26:01if we had tournaments
26:02all day.
26:03We had a lot of family time.
26:05That was my most favourite part.
26:08For me,
26:09what ended up being
26:10a blessing was
26:11all the time
26:11you get to talk
26:12with your parents
26:13because you have
26:13nothing else to do, right?
26:15We'd just sing songs
26:16that were on the radio
26:17and talk about our day
26:19or whatever.
26:20They would get to cutting up
26:21and it was,
26:22I felt like,
26:23good bonding time
26:24with them,
26:25you know?
26:26We were beyond excited.
26:28We'd wear our training gear
26:29to school
26:30to brag about
26:31what we were doing.
26:32School would end
26:33about 2.50,
26:34so you'd get there at 6,
26:36you'd train for two hours
26:37and then drive
26:38three hours back.
26:39It'd be getting back
26:40like midnight.
26:42I mean,
26:42at that time,
26:43there was no cell phones,
26:45no GPS,
26:45you had an atlas.
26:46It was difficult
26:47trying to navigate that,
26:49but we made it happen.
26:51We just thought
26:51we'd just do it
26:52for, you know,
26:53a season or so,
26:54you know?
26:54Did we?
26:55Yeah, that's what I thought.
26:56I thought we just knew.
26:57I didn't,
26:57I didn't,
26:58I don't think
26:59I really realised
27:00what we were doing.
27:02Go, Clint,
27:03go, Clint.
27:03There you go.
27:04Pressure.
27:05I think it was important
27:06that Clint went to play
27:07in the Dallas area.
27:08The level was incredibly high,
27:10probably stronger
27:11than most of the other teams
27:12in the United States,
27:13apart from probably
27:14teams in California.
27:15Come on!
27:17Come on!
27:21Let's go!
27:22Come on!
27:22Let's go!
27:23He was really fierce.
27:24He had real desire
27:26and he added that
27:27to the team.
27:28You know,
27:28he set the tone.
27:29But there were games
27:30where we weren't doing
27:31so well
27:32that I had to take
27:33Clint aside and say,
27:34look,
27:34you're going to have
27:35to do this on your own.
27:36If we're going to win
27:37this game,
27:37you're going to have
27:38to come up with something.
27:39And he would respond
27:40to that.
27:41I think he allowed me
27:42to express myself
27:43and play the way
27:44that I love to.
27:45He didn't try to,
27:45like,
27:46restrict me at all.
27:47And I was able
27:47to learn a lot
27:48and get the best coaching
27:49that I could
27:50in the state that I live.
27:52Tell me about this
27:53infamous cup story
27:54with Clint and your dad.
27:57Let me think.
27:59I wasn't on the trip,
28:00but I'm sure
28:01they'll probably tell you
28:01the story
28:02if y'all have heard
28:02the story.
28:03But I think my dad
28:04was on the,
28:06yeah,
28:06it was my dad.
28:07They were coming back
28:07from a trip
28:09and,
28:10okay,
28:10no,
28:10I'm not going to tell
28:10the story.
28:13Did she tell you about it?
28:15Oh, my.
28:16Oh, Lord,
28:17I thought he was going to
28:17talk about that.
28:20She's terrible.
28:22Yes, it is.
28:22She's terrible.
28:23That's a long drive.
28:24Yeah,
28:24it is a long drive.
28:26I'm not going to talk
28:26about that at all.
28:28We were just getting
28:29into Dallas.
28:30We're on the main highway
28:32and when I got to pee,
28:33I got to pee.
28:34It's like,
28:36there's no in between
28:36and I thought he was done
28:39with the cup.
28:41A used Coke cup.
28:43With ice in it.
28:46He was just going to
28:47throw some ice back.
28:49You know,
28:49I think the cup was empty
28:51and that's why
28:51Clint had used that one.
28:52So he threw back
28:53to get a big chunk of ice.
28:55Yeah,
28:55that's what I was getting
28:56was ice
28:56and I didn't know
28:57it was something else
28:58was going to do.
29:00He was driving
29:02through it back
29:02and was like,
29:03oh,
29:03and they almost
29:04like had a wreck.
29:05He's throwing up
29:06on the windshield
29:07and he's trying
29:08to do the windshield wipers
29:10going left lane,
29:12right there's like
29:12four or five lanes.
29:13He's all over the road.
29:15I'm talking about
29:15grace of God.
29:16There's traffic
29:17going everywhere.
29:19We end up
29:20pulling over
29:21while getting it
29:21all over
29:22and he's all pissed
29:23and he's like,
29:24he's like,
29:24you almost killed me.
29:26Whatever you do,
29:27you better not
29:28tell anybody
29:29about this.
29:30I said,
29:31all right,
29:31dad won't say nothing.
29:32That was a bad situation.
29:35We could have died.
29:37I remember getting home
29:38to mom
29:38and running inside
29:40and saying,
29:40mom,
29:40I'm not supposed
29:41to tell you nothing
29:41but dad drank my piss.
29:45And then he's like,
29:46you told me
29:46you weren't going
29:46to tell anybody.
29:48Here we are,
29:49we're telling it
29:49on TV.
29:50So,
29:51sorry,
29:51dad.
29:57We were learning
29:58as we were going along
29:59like what this
30:00really was all about.
30:02You know,
30:02the sign up
30:03and all the equipment
30:04and like,
30:04how are we going
30:05to get the money
30:05for all this?
30:06I started working
30:06extra shifts.
30:07Yeah,
30:08I sold a bunch
30:09of stuff
30:11and I got rid
30:12of all the cattle
30:13I had.
30:14And then you sold
30:14a boat.
30:15Yeah,
30:15and a boat.
30:16And then you started
30:16selling your guns.
30:18Yeah,
30:18well,
30:18you don't have time
30:19to hunt or anything.
30:22You can't do anything.
30:24You're too busy
30:25running the roads.
30:28It was hard
30:29on our relationship.
30:30It was hard
30:31on the other kids
30:31and we just decided,
30:33you know what?
30:34We need to focus
30:35on Jennifer.
30:35She's only got
30:36a couple more years.
30:37She's a junior now.
30:38We're going to take
30:39her to more
30:39ZAT tournaments
30:40because it was,
30:41it was time.
30:43This was her time
30:45and tennis
30:45was important
30:46to Jennifer.
30:47Just her commitment
30:48to it
30:49and going out
30:49and training
30:50all the time
30:50and going to camps
30:52and being on varsity,
30:54being ranked
30:54and I understood
30:56that that was important
30:57and what I was doing
30:59kind of went
31:00on the back burner.
31:02So we decided
31:03to take Clint
31:04off the Dallas
31:05soccer team
31:05for a season.
31:06With the condition
31:07that we'll,
31:08you know,
31:09hopefully we can
31:09get you back,
31:10you know,
31:10as fast as we can
31:11and he was surprisingly
31:13understanding
31:14about that
31:15but gosh,
31:16I hated doing that
31:17because he was
31:18so good.
31:20What your parents say
31:21is the law, right?
31:22You're not going
31:23to be able
31:23to change it
31:24but I understood
31:24that you got
31:25to make sacrifices
31:25for your family.
31:26That's what we always
31:27have done.
31:28Shoot,
31:29they've made a lot
31:29of sacrifices
31:30for me to be able
31:31to be going to Dallas
31:31and that's a time
31:32that they missed
31:33because they were
31:34on the road with me
31:34so she was going
31:35to have a chance
31:36from tennis
31:36to go to college
31:37and I was willing
31:38to take that year off
31:39so that she could,
31:40she could do that
31:40and you know,
31:41it was really a blessing
31:42in disguise
31:43because you didn't
31:43know what was
31:43going to happen
31:44but looking back
31:46my mom and dad
31:47were able to get
31:48more of that time
31:49with her
31:50that I think
31:51probably helped them
31:52have a little bit
31:52more peace
31:53after everything
31:54that happened.
32:01I think everybody
32:02has like a person
32:04that they know
32:04that they're like
32:05that's an angel.
32:07I mean this person
32:07just never gets mad.
32:12They don't have
32:13a mean bone
32:14in their body
32:15like all of us do.
32:20Their default
32:21disposition is smiles.
32:24You know,
32:24that's exactly
32:25who Jennifer was.
32:28She was just
32:28like any big sister.
32:29We would just,
32:30we would do
32:30everything together
32:31so because we had,
32:32there was the boys
32:33and you know,
32:33there was the girls
32:34and they had their own room
32:35and we had our own room
32:36and we'd do each other's hair,
32:38you know,
32:38just talk about boys,
32:39you know,
32:40all the things, so.
32:43She was great.
32:44She was a,
32:44she was a great
32:45older sister.
32:49Sweet,
32:50loving.
32:51I mean we had
32:52a lot of family
32:53memories together
32:53so even though
32:56I was really young
32:59she's gonna
32:59always be in my heart.
33:03She was a protector.
33:05She was a good big sister
33:07and I just remember
33:12her smiling a lot.
33:16she was loyal.
33:18She was your friend
33:19and was so supportive
33:21of our brothers and sisters.
33:23We'd make little poster signs.
33:25I remember making one Clint,
33:26you know,
33:27always cheering him on.
33:33I remember they'd just gotten off
33:35for Thanksgiving holidays.
33:37And we walked into the kitchen
33:39and the next thing I know
33:40she fell and hit her head
33:42on the counter.
33:45And so I,
33:46I was able to get her up
33:48and get her to the hospital.
33:52I knew that she wasn't conscious
33:54and they found
33:54the aneurysm.
33:56The neurologist was hoping
33:57that it might have been
33:58something else
33:59but it wasn't.
34:01It was all very surreal.
34:03I went to the hospital
34:04and you know,
34:05she was not,
34:07she wasn't,
34:08she wasn't gone.
34:11You know,
34:11I held her hand
34:12and she would,
34:13you know,
34:14she'd squeeze your fingers.
34:15She's like,
34:16okay,
34:16like,
34:17things can be fine.
34:18In fact,
34:18she woke up right before
34:20they,
34:21she was going into surgery.
34:23Mm-hmm.
34:24And she,
34:25even though she's intubated,
34:26she gave me a kiss
34:27and then she went to surgery.
34:30They did an operation on her
34:31and it was like successful
34:32and we were like,
34:34all right,
34:35just a matter of time
34:36and then we'll get the,
34:39we'll get the good news
34:40and then.
34:48It didn't work out that way.
34:51They said that,
34:52uh,
34:53the blood on the brain
34:54caused it to swell
34:55and they couldn't get
34:56the swelling controlled
34:58and so she ended up,
35:00uh,
35:01herniating
35:02her brain stem.
35:04Oh,
35:05there's a beautiful girl.
35:07Oh,
35:08he's aiming to do it.
35:10Here.
35:12Knowing something was wrong
35:13when we got into the hospital
35:14and saw aunts and uncles crying
35:16and,
35:17uh,
35:19couldn't believe it
35:20and the days that followed
35:22just,
35:22uh,
35:23felt like a nightmare.
35:26The last conversation
35:27I ever had with her
35:28was asking if mom and dad
35:30were home,
35:30if,
35:31uh,
35:32I could go to my friend's house
35:33and they weren't home
35:34and being upset
35:35that they weren't home
35:35and being like,
35:36okay,
35:36fine,
35:37bye.
35:38Instead of saying,
35:40hope you have a good day,
35:41love you,
35:41bye.
35:42Like,
35:42instead of doing something
35:43the proper way,
35:44I never did that
35:45and it's one of those things
35:47don't have many,
35:48uh,
35:48regrets,
35:48but that's one of the
35:49things I regret a little bit.
35:55At a young age
35:55losing a sister,
35:57I just knew
35:57that there was not much
35:58out there gonna be
35:59tougher than that
35:59that I would face.
36:01Kept me grounded,
36:03kept me focused
36:05and
36:06helped me not to be afraid
36:07and
36:09that I've already
36:10been through the worst.
36:15I'd gone
36:16to the cemetery
36:19and I found this little
36:20note wadded up
36:22and
36:23it was stuck inside
36:24the,
36:25the vase.
36:28I opened it up
36:29and it was
36:30from,
36:36it was from
36:37the clan
36:39and he had written
36:41a note
36:44saying that he
36:46loved her
36:47and missed her,
36:49but
36:50while she's up there
36:51could
36:51she help him
36:53score some goals.
36:55Your mom gave us
36:56a copy of the note.
36:57Do you think
36:57you'd be able
36:58to read it for us?
36:58Yeah,
36:59no problem at all.
37:03Yeah,
37:04I remember
37:04leaving it
37:06but then my mom
37:07uh,
37:08sent it to me
37:09and all I could
37:09think was
37:11damn.
37:15Um,
37:17yeah,
37:17to Jennifer,
37:17my loving sister,
37:19I miss you so much.
37:21It's been hard
37:22on all of us
37:24I hope you're
37:25having fun
37:25in heaven.
37:27Uh,
37:31wish I could
37:31see you again.
37:33Sorry for the
37:34spelling.
37:35I spelled
37:35her name wrong.
37:38Uh,
37:39love you,
37:39miss you so much.
37:41Uh,
37:41sign my name.
37:45P.S.
37:46I try my best
37:47to become a
37:47professional soccer
37:48player
37:48just for you.
37:51Uh,
37:52and,
37:53uh,
37:53if I score,
37:53I'll give you a kiss,
37:54uh,
37:55kiss in the air,
37:56point to the sky
37:57basically,
37:57so,
37:59yeah.
38:02I never knew
38:03some of the things
38:03that he was
38:05going through.
38:08Like,
38:08the last time
38:09he talked
38:09over the phone
38:10that he wasn't
38:11as nice as he
38:12should have been
38:13or wanted to be
38:13or,
38:15and then he
38:15always felt guilty
38:16about it.
38:17Well,
38:17I never knew
38:17that he had,
38:18you know,
38:19felt that way,
38:20you know.
38:23And so,
38:25when he always
38:26honors her,
38:27I know that
38:29that's what
38:30that's all about.
38:32She had been
38:33proud to see
38:34what Clint was
38:34able to achieve.
38:35in this.
38:37Um,
38:39I think that's
38:40probably, uh,
38:41an understatement.
38:43Because, uh,
38:46I think she would be,
38:48uh,
38:52right,
38:53right there along
38:54with us
38:55when we,
38:55uh,
38:57we're at the
38:57World Cups
38:57and celebrate.
39:04Doing this thing,
39:05I'm an open book.
39:07Gonna keep it real
39:08and it's important
39:09to talk about
39:10what's important
39:11to you
39:11and without her
39:13there's no me.
39:14I mean,
39:14that was my,
39:15you know,
39:16motivation.
39:23I mean,
39:23where are you from?
39:25Is,
39:25is what makes you
39:26who you are.
39:28And your brothers
39:29and sisters,
39:29they sacrifice
39:30a lot for you.
39:31As well as your
39:32parents,
39:33grandparents,
39:34aunts, uncles,
39:34cousins, everybody.
39:35So,
39:36your success
39:37is everybody's success.
39:38And,
39:39if you can't bring
39:40people with you,
39:41then,
39:42what's the point
39:43of being successful,
39:44you know?
39:45You know?
39:54I mean,
40:23I don't know.
