00:04All good, yeah. Let me know when you guys are ready to go, and we're all set.
00:10So, the term healthy rivalry has come up a lot between, you know, people talking about
00:16yours and Clint's dynamic at this time.
00:18Yeah, I always struggled with it because from my perspective towards Clint, I didn't have
00:26a rivalry.
00:31Before the 2010 World Cup cycle, Landon Donovan was clearly the poster boy for the U.S.
00:37men's national team, and Clint Dempsey was still working his way in to try to challenge
00:41for that.
00:43I'm sure he's looking at Landon Donovan thinking to himself, I'm as good as this guy.
00:48I'm better than this guy.
00:54Everybody wants to be the top dog.
00:56You're lying if you say you don't want to be.
00:59That's just facts.
01:01He wanted to be the best, simple.
01:03And if he wanted to be the best, he had to, you know, battle Landon.
01:07They respected each other, but they weren't the best of friends.
01:11We weren't really from the same background.
01:12We didn't really have a lot in common.
01:14Clint had to create a narrative that people were against him or wanted him to fail.
01:20There was no ill will towards anybody, but it's survival of the fittest out there.
01:24Sometimes it was the coach.
01:26Sometimes it was the opponent or the referee.
01:28Sometimes that was me.
01:30I got people to take care of, and if you get in the way of that, then we got an
01:34issue.
01:34We got a problem.
01:35He created this feeling so that he could play with that edge.
01:39That's how he became one of the best players ever in this country.
01:44Going back to the rivalry between you two, tied for all-time leading scorer, is it 57 goals each for
01:50the U.S. men's national team?
01:51How much does that irk you?
01:53It doesn't, because I was on both-
01:55Clint!
01:56Well, I'm leaving.
01:57Stop it!
01:58Hey, stop it!
01:58I thought this was a real conversation.
02:01There's only a certain amount of bullshit I could listen to.
02:02Do I wish I would have broke the record?
02:04Hell yeah.
02:05There ain't no question.
02:06Hey, we're both at peace with it.
02:08Yeah, we're both-
02:09I don't think Clint's at peace with it.
02:10Did you not hear that?
02:11I think Clint was the wind.
02:12Yeah, Clint is.
02:13We are at peace.
02:15Fuck no, I didn't want him to break the record.
02:18No chance.
02:39You know, there's always been that kind of, I want to say a little bit of arrogance from the English
02:44when it comes to Americans and American soccer.
02:47So when the draw for that World Cup group came out, you saw the headlines in England.
02:52Easy.
02:52And it was England, Algeria, Slovenia, Yanks.
02:57Oh no, we've done it again.
02:59It's like the whole it's coming home thing.
03:01It backfires every time.
03:05We had, you know, the utmost confidence to do well in that tournament.
03:08Obviously having success in 09 in the Confederations Cup helped.
03:14You know, I just remember thinking, like, it's not going to be easy.
03:17Like, I don't know what they're thinking, but like, we can play.
03:20And we always knew that.
03:21You can even look at the history of games between the U.S. and the English and, like, when they
03:25lose, it's like this catastrophic thing.
03:28Like, we lost to America.
03:30Like, my God, how could this happen?
03:32You know, so I don't think that Yanks was said with endearment.
03:36Headlines don't always get it right.
03:38But yeah, I do remember that.
03:40We were all ecstatic because there were so many guys on our team who had previously or currently played in
03:44England.
03:45I was excited because these are all guys who I know, who I played against.
03:49We also knew it was a big, tough game.
03:52That was one I definitely marked on the calendar because being in England and coming over and having to prove
03:57yourself and get that respect, that's what it's all about.
03:59It's testing yourself against the best and seeing where you stack up.
04:04Here's Steven Gerrard with a chance, under the goal.
04:07The England captain pounces.
04:10They came out and punched us in the mouth early with the Steven Gerrard goal, but we fought and fought.
04:17It didn't have a great start, but the response after that goal was really strong.
04:22But that game gets remembered because it was not Robert Greene's best moment.
04:27I had to fake a few times to then get to my left and hit a shot.
04:31They probably didn't have a lot of power on it, but the ball for that World Cup moved a little
04:34bit more than the normal balls in World Cup's past.
04:37Oh, and Rob Greene's let it in.
04:38It's a howler.
04:39And the USA are level.
04:41So it ended in a draw.
04:42It was mostly because of that mistake by Robert Greene, and maybe it was a little bit of help from
04:47my guardian angel, Jennifer, to get it across the line.
04:50But, you know, sometimes you need a little luck on your side, so.
04:53So you didn't feel special about that World Cup.
04:55So we were on the other side of the earth.
04:57I mean, you talk about time zones and distance.
04:59We were nearly as far south as you can get, and it's a world away.
05:05And I remember one of the indelible images was I'd look out on the balcony from my room, and it
05:11was just like field, and then there was a pond.
05:14And Clinton would be sat on his stool and be fishing, literally all day.
05:18After training, he's just fishing.
05:22Shoot, you know, I'm always scouting for a little bit of fishing.
05:25And, yeah, we got to stay in a nice location during the World Cup.
05:29It was fun in my downtime to do some fishing.
05:31It was something that always kind of brought me peace.
05:34I watched him fish.
05:36He caught some fish there.
05:37Did you watch him fish?
05:38Yes.
05:39I mean, if there was water and fish, he was there.
05:43I saw a picture of the type of fish you would catch back there.
05:46Those were some ugly fish.
05:49Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:50We're catching some type of catfish.
05:52I foul-hooked a carp and was about to grab it and pick it up, and it got away, so
05:57I didn't get a picture with that.
05:58It was a huge carp.
05:59But, yeah, it was, you know, it was what it was.
06:02I mean, you didn't really get to choose where you were going to be, but you wanted to make the
06:06most of it away from the stress of the competition.
06:10You know, that's a pretty cool sort of moment in all the chaos that was the World Cup.
06:16Every day looking out, watching Clinton fish.
06:20We had all gotten to know each other, and it wasn't always easy.
06:24There were some tough moments along the way.
06:26But in the process, we all believed that there was something big for us in the World Cup and that
06:32we could do something special.
06:33And so the feeling after England was positive, but it wasn't about one game.
06:38It was about three games.
06:40I think 2009 getting out of that group that we were in at Confederations Cup got us belief that we
06:45could do it.
06:46But, you know, every point you get in a World Cup competition is important.
06:49And we felt a little bit hard done by in the Slovenia game.
06:53Donovan goes alone and scores!
06:55Oh, what a goal!
06:56Bradley!
06:57He's done it!
06:58USA are level!
06:59We thought most goals should have counted.
07:01And he's into the back of the net, but the goal is going to be disallowed.
07:05The referee had another idea, and they called offside.
07:07It is ruled out.
07:09Adu thought he'd scored a winner.
07:11It's easy to get deflated, but it's a quick turnaround.
07:14You're at the World Cup.
07:15You don't have time to sulk.
07:17This is it.
07:18The crunch.
07:19The USA have to perform today.
07:21The Algeria game was crazy.
07:22It was a must-win game for us.
07:24A lot of crazy stuff happened.
07:26Clint Dempsey is in, but he's going to be disallowed.
07:29The goal that I scored was called offside, but it wasn't.
07:31I hit the post in the game.
07:32Clint Dempsey off the post and again, and he's missed the rebound!
07:35It was crazy.
07:37Absolute agony for the USA!
07:39You're watching the clock, and you know the U.S. needs that goal, or their World Cup is over.
07:45Howard.
07:45Oh, God, I've played that goal over a billion times.
07:49You watch Tim Howard throw what felt like a hundred-yard ball to start this whole thing.
07:54Landon Donovan, are things on here for the USA? Can they do it here?
07:58So in that moment, I'm like, this is aces, this is gold.
08:07The whole World Cup, for me, it was a roller coaster.
08:10We go down after four minutes to England, we score, we tie the game.
08:14Slovenia, we're at the very bottom of the valley.
08:17And then we come back and tie the game and the emotions.
08:20And then in the Algeria game, there's all this back and forth, and you think, oh, there's
08:25this moment where Clint's going to score, because Clint's doing what he always does, which is
08:29run hard across the goal to sacrifice himself for the team.
08:32And then it rolls out, and you look up.
08:36And Donovan has scored!
08:38Oh, can you believe this?
08:40Go, go, USA!
08:41Of course, it was those two players combining for what is arguably one of the greatest moments
08:47in U.S. soccer history.
08:48USA through!
08:50Oh, it's incredible!
08:51The feeling that all of us had afterwards on the field was just incredible.
08:55We had won the group, and we had once again done it in an incredible way, and so we were
08:59proud.
09:01If anything I'd take from the team that we had under Bob Rowley is that they always had
09:05fight.
09:06And we put ourselves in a situation where we got to play in the knockout rounds and face
09:09Ghana again.
09:12You know, a couple people refer to this 2010 World Cup as a real rollercoaster, and it's
09:17true.
09:18You got some pretty tough news while you were over there, right?
09:21Yeah, it was a day before the Ghana game.
09:27Yeah.
09:28Ever since Jennifer, it's just so hard to figure what is the best way to do things.
09:35So we've always, like, never really kept anything from any of the kids.
09:40You know, we don't really say, oh, well, we'll just tell them, you know, later after the game
09:44or whatever.
09:45We, I don't want them to say, I wish you would have told me.
09:50Yeah, I'd heard that my grandpa passed away, so I had to go out there and compete with
09:54a pretty heavy heart.
09:56I know it's got to be tough on my dad because he was over at the tournament during that time,
10:00but it's always a tough one not knowing what the situation's going to be to, do I go to
10:04the World Cup and root on my son or am I there for my dad?
10:06So I'm sure it's something that always kind of was a tough decision for him to make.
10:13Did he know going into that game that your father had passed?
10:16Yes.
10:17Yes, he did.
10:17And we did tell him that before the game that he had passed away.
10:21Which, you know, I hated, you know, you're trying to...
10:24No, you don't want to, but you feel like you have to.
10:27Even though I wanted us to get further in the tournament if things didn't work out,
10:30I also wanted to be there to go to his funeral, so, yeah.
10:37You know, Clint did the best he could, and when we buried him, he put one of his jerseys
10:42in there with him from that World Cup.
10:44Wow.
10:47Thank you for joining us wherever you may be watching.
10:50This is a massive match at the World Cup.
10:53The United States in the last 16 against Ghana.
10:58We got another crack at Ghana, which we knew wasn't going to be an easy game.
11:02Here comes the boogeyman, right?
11:04Here's that team that, you know, for whatever reason, we had some drama with.
11:08Yes, Ghana did win four years earlier, but this was a different U.S. team.
11:12We felt internally like this is a good match.
11:15Here's Kevin Prince-Burteng attacking on the side and scoring.
11:19The U.S. concede early again.
11:22When you're chasing the game in a knockout stage of a World Cup, it's not easy, right?
11:26It's a different kind of pressure.
11:29But it feels like this game could get away from the U.S.
11:33They needed someone to get them back into this game, and Clint did it again.
11:39Is that a penalty?
11:40Yes, it is.
11:41The U.S.A. have a penalty.
11:43Yeah, I was able to draw a penalty.
11:45We tied the game 1-1.
11:46Landon scored.
11:47He's done it.
11:48Landon done it again.
11:52Got to the overtime, and they scored against us.
11:57And the U.S.A. are in trouble again.
12:01Before we knew it, we were down again.
12:03We had to try to push and push and play on the edge.
12:05And we did all those things, and it just didn't happen.
12:07And once again, it's Ghana who go through.
12:12I was at peace, because I know I gave everything that I had.
12:16Yeah, it stings.
12:18It hurts.
12:18But what can you do?
12:20If you don't get the job done, you don't get the job done.
12:23So it's back to the drawing board and see what happens after that.
12:27We gave everything in the Ghana game.
12:29We just ran out of gas.
12:30We were just emotionally and physically exhausted.
12:34Every one of us on the inside has a lot of pride in terms of how we played.
12:40But when it ends, and you feel that there was more there, that's not always easy.
12:54We're just going to get you an accreditation that you can keep on.
12:57Do you want to take one and pass them around?
12:58Put it on.
13:01Does this look okay to you guys?
13:02Perfect.
13:02This is perfect.
13:03It's a lot nicer, huh?
13:05I was like, oh my God.
13:06Oh.
13:10Bobby, come on.
13:11All right.
13:11What's up, brother?
13:12How are you doing, man?
13:14You doing all right?
13:15Looking good?
13:15No, you catching all the fish.
13:19Ladies and gentlemen, how are you doing?
13:20You all right?
13:22Are you all good?
13:23Oh, man, look at this.
13:24It's lovely to see you.
13:25Thank you very much for joining us today.
13:27We're going to straight away, we're going to get up these two legends.
13:30Let's make some noise for Clint Dempsey and Benny Zamora.
13:36You originally held the record on the Fulham podcast of the most F-words ever.
13:43On congratulations.
13:45Only to be beat by the man to your left.
13:50He's from the street, didn't he?
13:51That's what it is, you know?
13:52Exactly.
13:53I said, keep it real.
13:54I was too real with it, I guess.
13:56You both played under a number of managers at Fulham, and I want to just ask a little bit about
14:00that.
14:01For me, I was here for five years.
14:03We had five different coaches in that time, and every time a new manager comes in, you're fighting for a
14:07place in the team.
14:08And I was always that person that was on the chopping block every season and had to prove myself to
14:13get into the team.
14:14And whoever stood in my way, then we were going to go up against it.
14:18Like it or not, Fulham must write the next chapter in their story without their most successful manager of the
14:24modern era.
14:25Mark Hughes has taken on the challenge of continuing the remarkable turnaround in Fulham's fortunes by Roy Hodgson in less
14:31than three seasons.
14:32Mark Hughes comes in, first game of the season, I wasn't a starting lineup.
14:36So we go in there, flip over the page, Dempsey don't see his name in the lineup.
14:43He stands up and goes, if you don't think I'm one of the best players in this starting XI, you
14:50need to sell mine right now and walk out.
14:55This is good pressure from Fulham, and it goes towards Dempsey!
14:58Wonderful goal for Fulham, and that's a bullet of a header from the American.
15:02So not only does he come back into the side and prove Mark Hughes wrong, he becomes Fulham's all-time
15:10leading Premier League goalscorer.
15:16So you wonder why I'm crazy, it's when every year I prove myself to be the starter, and I prove
15:22myself to be top two or top one attacking players scoring goals from a midfield position.
15:29When I came to Fulham, I didn't know him too well, but he had a good technique, you know, but
15:34it was, like, strange, because I felt like he didn't have the same academy as the European players, and he
15:41managed to have his own style.
15:43He would do anything to score, he would fight, so playing with him, you have a warrior.
15:49We played against him a number of times, against Fulham, always a tough game, and Clint was always one of
15:54those competitors that seemed very angry on the pitch and was one of those that probably didn't want to get
15:59on the wrong side of.
16:01Every time you played against him, he had that look in his eye, like he really wants to kill you.
16:05It was a respectful, competitive edge.
16:07It wasn't anything malicious in any way, it was just very competitive.
16:12It was the first Americans that I played with, and I thought that maybe this is the style in America,
16:17a bit like, a bit like gangster, you know, this kind of pipe.
16:21In today's 1-0 win over Liverpool, Fulham's Clint Dempsey scored his 37th career Premier League goal, breaking Brian McBride's
16:27American record.
16:28You know, hoping more Americans can come over here and even better what I've done.
16:31Well done tonight.
16:32Thank you, sir, appreciate it.
16:33He's breaking record after record.
16:35Can't Dempsey get in here? He's on a hat-trick, you know.
16:38He's the first American to score a hat-trick in the Premier League.
16:41Clint Dempsey, it's another! Clint Dempsey, hat-trick for Fulham!
16:45He was super fit, his confidence was through the roof, he was scoring from all different places and just loving
16:51his football.
16:53Great goal scorer, somebody who's just always kind of thorn in your side.
16:57I like the word annoying, but I also call him a prick. Yeah, he's a prick as well to play
17:01against.
17:02So, new manager comes in, and he has to prove himself all over again.
17:06Yep, happens again with Martin Yorl.
17:08Right, sorry, which manager are we on now?
17:09Martin Yorl walked back into life as a Premier League manager.
17:14Yorl was appointed two weeks ago after the resignation of Mark Hughes.
17:18When you look at the last season he was at Fulham, it sums up the total absurdity of the whole
17:24situation.
17:27Fulham was stupid. They didn't see what they had. And they didn't offer him a new contract till the new
17:35year.
17:36I went to them twice to try to negotiate early in the season, and they weren't trying to talk about
17:41it. So by the time March came, I was already like, this girl don't want me, so I'm going to
17:45move on, you know what I'm saying? I'm going to move on and start looking elsewhere.
17:48And they said, okay, you know, stay, stay. All of a sudden, the boot is on the other foot.
17:53The owner of Al Fayed showed me a blank check and says, what do you want? So if it was
17:58about money, I could have just told him a number. Right there. You don't think he could make things happen?
18:04He had a blank check right there, ready to write.
18:08It wasn't about money, man. I just wanted to play Champions League at that point. That's one of my dreams.
18:14It's time to move on.
18:17The fans always showed love. I always felt completely loved by the fans. But when I left, the fans didn't
18:24deserve that, and you weren't able to tell them what all really went into that and what happened behind closed
18:29doors.
18:30So I was in a no-win situation there, but I'm forever grateful for the fans.
18:41I went to Tottenham, and he came, I think, one month later. They were saying, like, oh, we are interested
18:46in Klint. And I remember me being happy.
18:49I know his qualities. I know what he can do. And, like, for me, any team can have a Klint
18:55Dempsey.
18:57He had that ability to take a player on. He had a great touch, great attacking ability, able to score
19:02goals under pressure.
19:03He kind of brought that to the team, and he added that different dimension to our teams, which made us
19:09good.
19:11In the Premier League, you need big personalities as well to survive there. And with Klint, we had goals, we
19:16had a skillful player, and we had the character of Klint Dempsey as well.
19:24Going to a bigger club like Spurs, it's an opportunity, a big opportunity. And he always wanted to be at
19:30the best. He always wanted to be or strive for success. And I think he saw that as another step
19:35up in the journey of Klint Dempsey.
19:38It's a team that has a chance to make Champions League. And playing with Gareth Bale, Tremaine Defoe, Moussa Dempsey.
19:44I mean, it's a team that had a lot of firepower.
19:49Professionally, it was good for Klint to go to Tottenham, because he wanted to play at the higher level, and
19:54he was ready to take on new frontiers.
19:56And he proved it with the goal against Manchester United.
19:58I remember going into the game, we knew we hadn't won at Old Trafford for 20-plus years, whatever it
20:04was.
20:04The ball got wide to Gareth Bale. Looked like he thought he could score, and he hit the shot.
20:11I probably should have scored, and then he got the rebound.
20:14The only thing I'm thinking is, if you miss this, bro, you ain't never gonna get a chance easier than
20:18this.
20:21When I scored, went over to the flag, gave the two taps, saluted, and that was that.
20:28Yeah, for him to be getting goals in big games was important for us as well, and the reason why
20:33we signed him.
20:35That was a very good season, I think. Obviously, we come from Fulham, a very nice club, but in Tottenham,
20:41bigger names, you know.
20:43And I think we played very good football.
20:50My first Premier League game I ever went to was watching Man United play at Old Trafford, too.
20:54So, talk about full-circle moments, it's kind of crazy.
20:57And also, that was my first goal for Tottenham.
20:59And so, I'm proud of what I was able to do during my year there.
21:10And there's big news coming from the other type of football.
21:13A day after USA soccer fired Bob Bradley as the head coach, as many assumed.
21:17Today, the announcement, German soccer legend Jürgen Klinsmann will be introduced at a press conference on Monday.
21:25Yeah, hello everybody. Such a nice venue.
21:28I think U.S. soccer saw in Jürgen Klinsmann, this sort of elite international manager who could finally build on
21:34the success that Bruce and Bob and others had kind of like crafted,
21:37and finally like thrust the U.S. national team into the same company as, you know, the England, Spain, Brazil,
21:43Argentina, etc.
21:44It's going to be a lot of work, you know, but it's World Cup qualifying time and that's where, you
21:49know, you've got to show character,
21:50you've got to show everything you have and get the first three points.
21:57I thought that was really cool to be able to work with, you know, a legend that has played your
22:01position.
22:03He had coached Germany before that, took third place finish, so there's this optimism and, you know, excitement of something
22:10new, something different.
22:12Jürgen came in, shook things up, and he made people earn their spot on the team, and some of the
22:17first games played under him, people were on the chopping block.
22:21Landon Donovan, the face of American soccer, considering retirement, Donovan didn't commit to calling it quits.
22:28Instead, he explains what he really needs.
22:31I have a propensity for depression. I had been through a couple episodes in my life that were really, really
22:37difficult.
22:38So in the beginning of 2013, I talked to Jürgen Klinsmann, and I said, I need time away.
22:43It was probably not received well publicly. It was certainly not received well by Jürgen.
22:51If you're Jürgen Klinsmann, the new coach, you come in, and Landon's supposed to be one of your figureheads, and
22:55he steps away, you know, you're going to go look for someone you can count on.
23:00That process of you becoming captain, was it conversation? Would you pass? Like, how does that happen?
23:07I mean, it was pretty much a conversation with Jürgen, and that's what he did, and I'm like, are you
23:11sure, bro? Like, I'm not, I don't know, I'm not the guy.
23:14Like, that's not my thing, you know, and he was like, yeah, I'm sure this is what I want to
23:17do, and I was like, all right, you know what I'm saying?
23:21Let's put on our seatbelts, see how this goes.
23:24I saw in Klint a personality that was made for that role. You know, he smells, you know, the atmosphere
23:31in the locker room. He knows what's going on.
23:33Sometimes maybe a bit quiet here and there, but then if it's needed, he opens his mouth, and he speaks
23:39up.
23:39He's not scared of saying his opinion. That's why I thought this is the ideal position for Klint.
23:48Every captain is different, you know, and Klint led the way he wanted to lead.
23:52You know, he was a different type of captain than everyone that we've had in the past.
23:56You know, he's going at this guy, he's going at that guy.
23:59It doesn't matter to him, you know, because he wants to win.
24:03But at the same time, he's a good dude. You know what I'm saying?
24:05Like, if he was an asshole, you know, it'd be like, okay, well, look, you know, yes, you want to
24:10do this, you want to do that, but calm down.
24:13But as long as you have the same goal, and you guys are marching to the same beat, that's all
24:18teammates care about.
24:20Because we all want to win. I know he's got my back, and he knows I got his. That's it.
24:32To be honest with you, I don't.
24:36That was?
24:39The 2014 World Cup qualifying cycle could not have started in a crazier way.
24:44They start playing in Honduras in what felt like 90-degree weather, and the U.S. loses that first qualifier.
24:52And then fast forward a few days later, that U.S. team travels from the sweltering heat of Honduras to
24:57snow in Colorado.
25:01And that was the first match where Clint Dempsey wore the captain's armband.
25:05I've never heard any other of my teammates talk about this game, and they might give the politically correct answer
25:12to it.
25:13It should not have been played. Like, they should have stopped the game.
25:16I was coming back from a calf tear. I'd been out for a few weeks, and playing on the ice,
25:21being cold, your muscles get tight.
25:23So I'm sure Tottenham weren't excited about me doing that.
25:28That second half, you couldn't play football.
25:30When you wanted to take a free kick, the ball was sitting on top of the snow, and that's how
25:34you would take the free kick.
25:35That's how much snow was in Denver.
25:37I really couldn't tell you why officials decided to play that game, but, you know, there were breaks during the
25:42match to shovel the snow, so you could actually see the lines on the field.
25:46We've seen it all. To take effort.
25:49See Jermaine Jones with his hair and his face completely like Jack Nicholson at the end of the Shining situation,
25:54you know?
25:55I definitely wasn't, you know, thrilled to play, but I knew that it was one of those things where we
26:00have to get on with it.
26:03It was just a crazy night, but on those kind of days, when there's so much on the line, you
26:07need your leaders to step up, and Clint, with the armband on, he stepped up.
26:12Turning into a bit of space, it looks promising, Altidore is opening up for him, the shot to blast, and
26:17he pulled it down into the back of the net, and the United States have their lead.
26:26Hey, man, maybe it was good luck for me to put that armband on.
26:37Somewhere in the summer of 2013, my ending comes back from a sabbatical.
26:41Don't mind the camera.
26:42Comes back from the national team picture.
26:44Shooting a documentary.
26:45Good.
26:46On airports.
26:48And is one of the fittest players there.
26:55I don't know that Landon really expected just to kind of saunter back in and be like, oh, hey, Clint,
27:00what's up?
27:01Like, remember, the two of us are both the faces of the program, and I'm like, how's it going?
27:06But, yeah, I mean, it seems like he was given that chance, and by most accounts, he seems to have
27:09taken that chance.
27:11The USA now are as good as on that plane to the World Cup Finals.
27:31The World Cup starts three weeks from today, and you will not see Team USA's most recognizable player.
27:38That's because Landon Donovan left off the U.S. World Cup roster.
27:43He's the all-time leader in goals for Team USA.
27:47We were convinced that the 23 players that we chose were simply in that specific moment in time better.
27:54And those are the very uncomfortable decisions that you have to make as a coaching staff.
27:59And a lot of people will disagree with you. A lot of people will be maybe angry at you.
28:04It was such a crazy decision to leave Landon off the roster.
28:08One of the worst decisions a U.S. manager has ever made.
28:12It was shocking for a lot of us.
28:14It was devastating. As you can imagine, I cried. It felt unfair. It was brutal.
28:20There was so much controversy surrounding Landon's exclusion from that squad that, yeah, at the time, I don't think a
28:25lot of us even thought about the fact that, like, oh, like, Clint's the guy now.
28:30No music, man. No music and no rap, man. Huh?
28:35I think that's when I started to try to be more of a leader and be more aware of things
28:42that I did and decisions I made.
28:44And the way that Landon is sort of, like, struck down and the situation that Clint is thrust into is
28:50almost, like, plucked out of a Greek tragedy or something like that.
28:5406, Landon Donovan was the star.
28:57Four years later, 2010, they're the two co-stars.
29:02But by 2014, it became Clint's team.
29:10Going into that World Cup, I just put a little bit more responsibility on myself to step up in big
29:14games and in big moments.
29:16It's not so serious, gentlemen.
29:20I try to be the best leader that I could in the way that was true to me, which is
29:23more leading by example, and doing whatever I can to get this team on a good run.
29:46You know, even though it only ended up being a year, I really enjoyed my time playing for Tottenham.
29:52Oh, this is dope.
29:53It was a passionate fan base, and there was a lot of quality players that were on the team, and
29:58I think it just made me a better player at the end of the day for that experience.
30:02Oh, my goodness.
30:04That's it.
30:05It's the end of his English journey.
30:08Do I think he should have stayed?
30:10A hundred percent.
30:11But like everybody else, I respect his decision.
30:14He came, he saw, he conquered.
30:16Simple as.
30:18For me, he was one of the success stories of going to Europe, because people don't realize, as being a
30:24professional footballer, there's more downs than ups, and especially playing in the Premier League at that time.
30:31You know what it's like to score that many goals in the Premier League?
30:34Like, it's not easy.
30:36People play in the Prem their entire careers and don't even come close to putting up those numbers.
30:40Let's be clear, though.
30:41In the end, I never got to play Champions League, but I was pretty damn close with Tottenham.
30:45So I gave it a good goal to try to make it happen, and it just wasn't meant to be.
30:55Any conversation about Clint Dempsey and Seattle has to start with Joe Roth.
31:03So I just play ball with me, and I'm going to welcome everybody to the field.
31:07Joe started talking about Clint.
31:10How amazing would it be if we could somehow convince him to come to Seattle, be a part of the
31:15organization?
31:16Can you score a goal?
31:17Hey, hey.
31:17Can you score a goal?
31:18Hey.
31:19Hey, Jackson.
31:20How you doing?
31:21And the months leading up to the transfer, Joe was like a dog on a bone.
31:28It was a 45-second clip, which I guess is all I could find that wasn't good to do.
31:32All right.
31:33You know, when I left Europe to come back to America, it's like I never left because Seattle
31:38is just as, or probably better than a lot of those Premership atmosphere-wise.
31:4450-some thousand fans every game, man.
31:47Man, it was a Seattle experience.
31:50The Seattle Sounders at that point, MLS, were like one of the only teams in the league that
31:55had a really authentic atmosphere.
31:57That's selling out an NFL stadium, basically.
32:01One day I was at training, a buddy of mine said, Eddie, have you talked to Clint?
32:05I said, no, I didn't talk to Clint.
32:07He's like, I think Seattle's going to sign him.
32:11Welcome, everybody, Central and Field tonight.
32:15Bullshit.
32:15I was like, nah, he would have called me, bro.
32:17And there's no, he's like, Eddie.
32:19Yeah, I mean, look, the idea was always to try and keep it under wraps.
32:23We have a very special guest with us.
32:27I said, nope, I'm not buying it.
32:31Eddie was like, hey, man, if Clint was coming, I would know.
32:35Like, there's no way that he's coming without me knowing.
32:38I'm like, okay.
32:41Well, Clint, I understand you're in town to check out our team and some of the other teams.
32:47Have you made up your mind?
32:50And I was like, this is no way.
32:52I mess with Clint, no response.
32:59Seattle, I look forward to getting on the field and playing in front of some of the best fans in
33:04the world.
33:08He said, hey, man, I couldn't say anything.
33:10They said, because if I told you, you would have posted on social media.
33:13I was like, he's right.
33:18Said he was never going to be coming back to MLS.
33:21So, number one, when he started talking to us about possibly coming, I was so shocked, I couldn't believe it.
33:27I said, are you sure?
33:29By being honest with you, I kind of wanted to go to Texas.
33:32I'm not going to lie about that, but Seattle really just ended up being a perfect place.
33:38It was a family decision as well, because you want to take care of your family in a good way.
33:42And I'd already told my dad that he could retire.
33:45And I knew by making that move, I could tell my mom to retire as well.
33:48When he had first come and told me about it, I said, I don't think you should do it.
33:53I was like, don't move back to the U.S. for us.
33:56Like, we're fine.
33:58But in the end, it was just too much money.
34:00You know, he couldn't turn it down.
34:03With a four-year deal worth more than $30 million, Clint Dempsey, the most successful American in European club history,
34:11suddenly became Major League Soccer's biggest acquisition since David Beckham went to Los Angeles.
34:16For me, to be honest with you, I thought that I was going to be over there two more years.
34:19But the opportunity came.
34:21MLS and Seattle Sounders really moved mountains to get me back.
34:25You need a lot more money going back to MLS than I did.
34:27Holy cow!
34:30Yeah, I mean, that's fucking, dude, that is crazy money for MLS back then.
34:34I don't blame Clint.
34:46This is my daughter, Phoebe.
34:47Hey, love, are you okay?
34:48Nice to meet you.
34:49This is Clay.
34:50This is Jamie.
34:50Oh, man, are you okay?
34:51Who's on the back of the shirt?
34:53Oh, of course.
34:55Is this the one from Clint?
34:57I'm just going to say good things about Clint.
34:59Okay.
35:00Who do you think is better?
35:01London or your daddy?
35:03The best American in the Premier League without a doubt.
35:05I know Landon Donovan is there, but Landon play forever.
35:07I could never pick the Everton player, but I've definitely got that one at the end,
35:10and I mean, you're a much better player than Landon Donovan.
35:12There we go.
35:13There we go.
35:14There we go.
35:15That's what I'm talking about.
35:16If I could go back at 30, I still should have stayed,
35:20but I had four years guaranteed to go back.
35:25You know what I'm saying?
35:26Hello.
35:27Hello.
35:28It was between the Sounders, LA Galaxy.
35:31It was always going to be Sounders.
35:33And Toronto.
35:34I'm not going back to the States to be in Canada.
35:36It is a choice.
35:37If you stayed in England, I could have kept my British accent.
35:39I know.
35:41I think the Seattle Sounders getting him to come back was massive for U.S. soccer.
35:46You know, I mean, this was a guy who was out there shining really brightly for the USA.
35:52Gypsy with a long-busting run.
35:54Gypsy has squawked it in!
35:57I think a lot of players, when they come from Europe and they arrive to Major League Soccer,
36:01sooner rather than later, they lose their edge.
36:03Oh, it's fantastic for Seattle!
36:06And Clint didn't lose his edge at all.
36:08Nice ball!
36:09Gypsy!
36:12He was box office in Seattle.
36:14You know, he was a guy that scored a lot of great goals, was still playing well.
36:18And I don't think it hurt anything that he went back there because of the level that he was playing.
36:23Gypsy takes it early.
36:24Oh, that is glorious!
36:26The attention to the club was massive when Clint came.
36:31The jersey sales, FIFA video game covers.
36:35Dempsey has a goal!
36:36Once he got going, it was unbelievable.
36:39You know, as I think back on some of the goals, some of the assists, Clint was at some of
36:45his best when he was here.
36:47But it was still the same bad-ass Clint Dempsey.
36:52Now the red card has been given.
36:56Crazy thing is, is I never got any red cards for the national team and I never got any red
37:00cards in the Premier League.
37:01The only time I was ever punished was in MLS.
37:05Yeah, I was playing in MLS at that time.
37:09We were in the U.S. Open Cup 2, yeah, when Clint tore off the referee's notebook.
37:15Well, that is an extreme example.
37:18You know, you have Seattle and Portland in the Open Cup and it becomes like one of the ugliest matches
37:22in recent American soccer history.
37:25It's going to be another yellow.
37:26Seattle finishes with seven players.
37:29There's red cards flying everywhere, and I guess it was in protest, he rips up the referee's notebook.
37:38And this final few minutes is ending in absolute chaos.
37:44Something I had never seen before in my life.
37:48What were you thinking, dude?
37:51Oh, it was comical.
37:53I have never, ever seen a finish like this in my life.
37:57Clint is associated with all these sort of iconic moments in the history of American men's soccer, and honestly, that's
38:03one of them.
38:04Yes, I deserved a red card for that.
38:06Obviously, I regret that, but I think everybody, you ask them if they've ever been frustrated in a game and
38:13they wish they could have done something like that, would they have wanted to do that?
38:15I bet a lot of people would have said they would have, but didn't have the guts to do it.
38:42You know, it's funny, like, in global soccer, you have these oddball pairings that shouldn't give you any pause.
38:49But if you're a U.S. fan coming up against Ghana in the 2014 World Cup, you're probably convinced that
38:54you will not win the game.
38:56I mean, when you see Ghana come up, it's a different kind of pressure.
39:00But the way we talk before the game, like, you know, nothing needs to be said.
39:04That's why I love playing with Clint, who's just, let's do this, dog.
39:07You know what I'm saying?
39:07That that's literally it.
39:10So the U.S. gets, like, the worst draw possible in 2014, obviously, the group of death.
39:15You have Portugal and Germany, two elite global powers, and then you have Ghana, the team probably that you should
39:20beat, but at this point are doubting whether you ever can.
39:23I mean, it's like, damn, bro.
39:25Something you can't shake, right?
39:27Knowing that we had them the first match, knowing that they beat us pretty much every single time we played
39:32them, I think that helped us a bit, to be honest, because we're all fired up for that match.
39:38The first game is almost the most important one because you want to start a World Cup with three points
39:43if it's possible.
39:44I didn't want to be the captain that failed at not being able to get out of the group, so
39:48I took that responsibility to get us off to a good start.
39:53The way the match started, it felt like a dream, really.
39:57I mean, like, you want to score early, if you can.
40:01Dempsey.
40:02Great start here.
40:03Can Dempsey score?
40:05Yes!
40:05The U.S. ahead!
40:07Incredibly!
40:08Within seconds!
40:14I mean, I was at an espresso before the game and scored so quick, I mean, I'm about to pass
40:21out from my heart beating so fast.
40:24It's the earliest USA goal ever in World Cup history.
40:30It's incredible when you start to think about, like, Clinton and his World Cup heroics.
40:34It's easy to do it when the lights are barely shining, but when they're the brightest, it's really difficult.
40:40But, you know, Ghana was, they were good.
40:42They were a very, very good squad.
40:43And, you know, if it wasn't for us and how tough we were mentally, and, you know, that scoreline would
40:48have definitely not been 2-1.
40:51Yeah, I started out really good against Ghana.
40:53Got that goal.
40:54Then they started to put more pressure on us.
40:56I remember getting my nose broke.
41:01For me, the tough part was breathing.
41:04I couldn't breathe out of my nose.
41:10I didn't want to wear a mask and look back on pictures looking like Zorro and all that kind of
41:15stuff.
41:15So I was like, I'm just going to roll with the being broke.
41:23Probably should have got it fixed along the way, and I never did.
41:26And I still struggle breathing out a lot on my nostrils, but, hey, it just reminds you of playing in
41:31a World Cup.
41:32So it was all worth it.
41:35Payback for the USA.
41:37Been by Ghana.
41:392006.
41:39Not done again.
41:412010.
41:42But 2014.
41:45Revenge.
41:46Served.
41:47Piping hot.
41:49Yeah, you know, our nemesis.
41:51I mean, it was only right that we gave Ghana what they had given us for the last couple of
41:55World Cup.
41:57The game against Portugal was a nail-biter.
42:02But we went into that game saying, we're going to beat you.
42:07Portugal scored first.
42:09Oh, my goodness.
42:10Jermaine Jones got us back in the game.
42:12Jones.
42:13Oh, yes!
42:14Jermaine Jones!
42:15And then there was a cross that came through.
42:17I was able to, like, score with my stomach.
42:20Dipsy!
42:20It's 2-1!
42:22Klint scored the second goal, and I was so sure that we're going to take these three points, and we
42:27move on already.
42:28And then, uh, in the 94th minute, it's Cristiano Ronaldo.
42:33Oh, it's a great cross!
42:34And it is an equalizer!
42:39It was kind of tough to swallow real quick, but it didn't make me nervous at all.
42:46And then we get to the last game against Germany, the eventual champions.
42:50It's Thomas Muller!
42:52It is 1-0 to Germany!
42:54You're never going to look at a 1-0 loss as a win, but we certainly felt, with how we
42:58were playing, that felt pretty good.
43:01The United States will be playing in the last 16 of the World Cup.
43:09Going into the tournament, no one had the U.S. coming out of that group.
43:12But then you know what's waiting for you.
43:13You have a Belgium team in the round of 16 that is stacked.
43:18De Bruyne, Lukaku, Eden Hazard, huge players playing in Europe in the best teams you can imagine.
43:25What I remember from that Belgium game is Tim Howard putting on a Superman cape to keep the U.S.
43:30in a game that really should have been a blowout.
43:33And I think Howard got something on it.
43:34Brilliant save, Tim Howard.
43:36Tim Howard away!
43:38You know, the best way to explain it really is, I was doing my job.
43:42Hazard!
43:42Good save, Tim Howard again!
43:44You don't have the luxury of his goalkeeper to go, hang on a second, I've made six saves here.
43:48I'm going to stop the game, we're going to have a powwow, we're going to say this is unacceptable.
43:51You know, you just, you just keep doing your job.
43:55Lukaku, Howard again!
43:57We took Belgium to overtime.
43:59I remember I had a really good chance off a set piece.
