Shadow Home Office Minister Matt Vickers says that the government should "get a grip" on the "benefits bonanza that is consuming all of our public finances", in order to invest in defence.

00:00Actually the previous government did invest heavily in defence. We did bring
00:03forward some of that drone capability that we're now seeing in action. The
00:08reality is the country always has different priorities. Its priority at
00:11the moment should be defence, should be its energy security in our own national
00:16security. We know what's going on around us, we've got to get real about that. This
00:19government has to get a grip, it has to bring forward the planet we promised us
00:22last year in terms of investment in our armed forces. It needs to cut that
00:26benefits bill. The only thing, you know, we're paying record levels of tax. The
00:29only service getting any bigger is the welfare state. The benefits bonanza that
00:34is going on, it is exploding. It's consuming all of our public finances. The
00:38country needs to get a grip on that. The government needs to reduce the size of
00:41the welfare bill and start investing in protecting this country.
