00:01Live and in color from Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, it's 1969 World Series Baseball.
00:12As the New York Mets meet the Baltimore Orioles for game number one.
00:18All right, let's set up the Orioles defensively.
00:21Boog Powell's at first base, Dave Johnson's at second, Mark Belanger's at shortstop, and
00:27Brooks Robinson at third.
00:28It's a brilliant infield for the Orioles.
00:30In left field, Don Buford.
00:32Paul Blair's in center field, and Frank Robinson is the right fielder.
00:39Ellie Hendricks will be catching.
00:43And Mike Clayar, 32 years old, the starting pitcher of the 69 series for the Orioles.
00:49Giants, the man who is right now in the road.
00:52Born in Cuba, lives now in Puerto Rico.
00:56His 13th professional season, he started the season with Montreal, was traded to the
01:01Mets in mid-June, and he helped the Mets the rest of the way.
01:04Two delivery.
01:05Struck him up, and the Mets were gone in the top of the field.
01:09No run.
01:09One hit.
01:10There were no errors.
01:11One man left.
01:12Middle of the first inning to score.
01:14The Mets nothing.
01:15The Orioles are coming to back.
01:17Allis set up the Mets defensively.
01:20Don Clendenin's at first base.
01:22Al Weiss at second.
01:25Bud Harrelson, the shortstop.
01:28Ed Charles is at third.
01:31Cleon Jones in left field.
01:34Tom Agee's in center.
01:37Ron Swoboda, the right fielder.
01:40Jerry Grody, the catcher.
01:44And Tom Seaver, the pitcher.
01:46Incidentally, they didn't make too many mistakes in the field during this past season.
01:50And there's the winningest pitcher in the major league this year, 24-year-old Tom Seaver.
01:55Outstanding promise then, and is developing into one of the real stars of the game.
02:00Don Buford hit 291 during the season.
02:03A rolling curve is a change-up.
02:06A high drive in the deep right.
02:09Swoboda backing up.
02:10Drawing a bead right in front of the wall and can't get it.
02:13Buford leads off with a home run.
02:15A high drive in front of the wall and can't get it.
02:38For his, rather than his best equipment, which is supposed to be that good hard fastball.
02:43But, it was a fastball.
02:48One out.
02:50I think Robinson's been consistent.
02:52A lifetime average in the National League of 3-0-3.
02:55And a lifetime average in the American League of 3-0-3.
02:58The outfield deep in the step toward last.
03:01Struck him out on a high fastball.
03:033-2 pitch.
03:04Hit 235 for the season.
03:07Nine homers, 52 RBI.
03:10On deck and then Brody.
03:14Second strikeout for Cuellar.
03:23The 2-2 pitch.
03:25And out goes at Charles.
03:27That's the third strikeout in a row now for Mike Playard.
03:31No score is...
03:32He hit 287.
03:34That's two homers, 51 runs batted in.
03:38Charlie Lau, the horse's fielding range is even better, Kurt.
03:42There's a ground ball in the third.
03:44And that's a quick 1-2-3 inning for Tom Seaver.
03:48So, at the end of two innings, the score.
03:50The Baltimore Orioles won and the New York Mets nothing.
03:55Inning.
03:56Inning number three.
03:57Good speed.
03:59Stick in a base hit now and then.
04:02Going to swing.
04:04Struck him out.
04:06Four strikeouts for Cuellar.
04:09Games played.
04:10RBIs.
04:11Runs.
04:11Total bases.
04:12Times at bat and strikeouts.
04:19Ground ball to Sharks.
04:20Colander to Johnson for one on the first double play.
04:25An easy double play.
04:29The Mets are all out in the third.
04:31No runs.
04:31No hits.
04:32No errors.
04:33Nobody left.
04:34At the end of two and a half, Baltimore won and New York nothing.
04:37And if we go to the last of the third.
04:39Boyard got a hand when he came up.
04:41The first pitch to him was ball one.
04:43The 2-2 pitch.
04:45That is strikeout number three for Tom Seaver.
04:49Tom Buford's done, I think, a very nice thing.
04:51He's invited his old college coach and his son to be his guest here at the world.
04:55Bounding ball to the right side.
04:58Weiss can't make a play.
05:04He received a telegram before the game.
05:07A fellow at Trinity University down in San Antonio.
05:10There he goes.
05:11Curveball hit the third.
05:13Ed Charles up with it.
05:15And the Orioles are out in the third.
05:18No runs.
05:19No hits.
05:20There was one error.
05:21One man left.
05:22At the end of three, it is Baltimore one and New York nothing.
05:25This side.
05:26Bring in Hilliard to the top.
05:37There's a drive in the left center for a base hit.
05:39They're trying to cut it off.
05:40It goes to the fence.
05:42Glenn Denon will have extra bases and is in with a stand-up double.
05:50The Mets have their second hit.
05:53Each team now has two hits.
05:56The Orioles are leading one to nothing in the top of the fourth.
05:59Fly ball right center.
06:00Paul Blair going for it.
06:02Has a beat on it.
06:03And the Mets are out of the fourth.
06:05No runs.
06:07One hit.
06:07No errors.
06:08One left.
06:09Three and a half innings gone.
06:10The Baltimore Orioles one and the New York Mets nothing.
06:13Rolling tonight.
06:14Two down.
06:15Nobody on.
06:18Hendricks played as a pull hitter to right.
06:21Base hit by Hendricks.
06:25The third hit for the Orioles.
06:27Their first hit since the first inning.
06:33Four.
06:34And the Orioles have runners on first and second.
06:36And that's the first walk given up by Tom Seaver.
06:42The Langer grounded the third.
06:45His first time up.
06:47The right.
06:48The boat is firing to the plate.
06:50The throw is off.
06:52The throw to third.
06:54Is not in time.
06:58The Langer.
06:59The Langer.
07:00Tengels to right.
07:01All season.
07:02The pitcher Mike Cuellar's up.
07:04He struck out his first time.
07:07It's a little looper.
07:09Baseball in the left center.
07:10In the score is Dave Johnson.
07:13The Langer stops at second.
07:15And Cuellar helps his own car.
07:17And he doesn't want a warm-up jacket.
07:23Four Orioles in a row have reached base.
07:26Three to nothing.
07:27Baltimore.
07:28There's a drive to right field.
07:30That's into the corner.
07:32Coming in the score.
07:33It's the Langer.
07:34Cuellar's going to third.
07:36And in the second goes Buford with his speed.
07:39A double.
07:44Rube Walker, the Met pitching coach, coming out.
07:47Seaver was sailing along.
07:51Yeah.
07:52No Johnson.
07:53Watch.
07:53The Langer single in a run.
07:54Cuellar single in a run.
07:55And Buford's double in a run.
07:57Ron Taylor warming up.
07:59Curve is hit the third.
08:00Charles up with it.
08:02And that's it.
08:05Eight men went to the plate.
08:07Three runs for the Orioles.
08:09Four hits.
08:11There were no errors.
08:12And two left.
08:13At the end of four innings,
08:14it's Baltimore four and New York nothing.
08:17Third.
08:17German Marquez.
08:19He struck out four and walked one.
08:24Bounding ball to Robinson.
08:25Backs him up.
08:26A hurry up throw right on the button.
08:30Four chances for Brooke Robinson in the game.
08:34When he was over with the Dodgers.
08:35I'm sure the people in Brooklyn watching today,
08:37Curt Field at Cox is the greatest they've ever watched.
08:40The people here.
08:42Live all to right.
08:45Frank Robinson.
08:47Right fielding.
08:48Two down.
08:50Brody has rounded out his first time.
08:52And now Al Weiss is coming up.
08:54Teaching him quite a bit about how to play.
08:56Third base.
08:57Two down.
09:01Weiss hits it to Robinson.
09:03Look at that tricky hop.
09:04Androzi now.
09:05That's the best fielding play of the game so far.
09:09That was a tough hop for him, Bill.
09:12He stayed right with it, Curt.
09:13It didn't fool him one bit.
09:14He had the glove down in good position.
09:16Reached the glove down quickly.
09:18Turned the neck.
09:18Made the good hard throw right from the third base side.
09:21And right on target to Powell to just get the runner by one or two good strides.
09:27So the Mets are down in order.
09:29And at the end of four and a half innings, the score.
09:31The Baltimore Orioles four.
09:32And the New York Mets nothing.
09:35Rockies will.
09:36And hello again, everybody.
09:37Sabres only been really roughed up in one inning.
09:40That was last inning on the Birds.
09:43Deep left center field.
09:44This is A.G. in front of the warning track with a lot of room.
09:48And one away.
09:52A.G. rolled out to short as he was jammed on a fastball in the fourth inning.
09:57And off the check swing.
09:58They gave him the heat that time.
10:00But Weiss was perfectly positioned.
10:03Weiss couldn't have played it any better defensively to get Powell on that hot shot.
10:07One hop.
10:08So he could play in the ball game.
10:10And it's fly deep to center.
10:11And it's popped up.
10:13Again, the second baseman Weiss was perfectly positioned as Brooks lined up on the fastball to the second baseman.
10:19And so at the end of the fifth inning, the score is Baltimore four.
10:24New York nothing.
10:26And here's Fuentes, who's six.
10:28I think he's four runs down to go to the top of the sixth inning.
10:31Will pull Tom Seaver.
10:32And he will bat instead one of his catchers, Duffy Dyer.
10:36During the regular season, Dyer batted .257.
10:39He had three home runs.
10:41And knocked over 12 runs.
10:43On the first pitch, the shortstop, Belanger, over near the hole.
10:47For out number one.
10:49Dyer batting for Seaver gets one pitch and grounds out short to first.
10:54He got the curve three times for three looking strikes.
11:01Belanger has walked and started.
11:03John, the year.
11:04He's a 33-year-older.
11:06Been with quite a few ball clubs.
11:08Outside again.
11:09And he scored during the three-run bottom of the fourth inning.
11:15Where one away in the top of the sixth, in the bottom of the sixth inning.
11:22Third baseman, Charles, with no trouble to retire.
11:26Johnson easily.
11:27And that's two up and two down.
11:31Mission was towards the tail end of the season.
11:33He's primarily a two-way.
11:35There's not a base runner on.
11:37One and two.
11:39Pops him up in foul ground.
11:42Planned in the big, tall first baseman.
11:44And Cardwell, in relief, has a one-two-three inning to retire the Orioles.
11:48And so, at the end of the sixth inning, the score is Baltimore, four.
11:53And the New York Mets, nothing.
11:56Jose Alvarez, the good pitcher, now.
11:59The Baltimore pitchers have now allowed no runs in 39 consecutive World Series innings.
12:04Back in the 66 series, after the opening game, McNally, Palmer, and Bunker pitched consecutive shutouts against the Dodgers.
12:13And Cuellar has shut out the Mets there in the first six innings of this opening game.
12:18To remember, to be remembered in that 66 World Series, the great relief job by Drew Balski.
12:23For a base hit line to center field.
12:26And Planned in has a two-for-three afternoon.
12:29Planned in had the last base hit off Cuellar.
12:33As, uh, Kurt commented earlier, a local product here in Baltimore.
12:41Hendricks is going out to talk to Cuellar.
12:44In addition to, uh, Hendricks being a left-hand swinger.
12:48And that's one of the reasons, but only one that he's in the ballgame, uh, started against Seaver.
12:52And now, uh, batting against Cardwell.
12:54He loses him, and that will move Planned in the second base.
12:58So now the Mets have, uh, their biggest rally of the ballgame.
13:01The Mets are down by four.
13:02They've come back many times during the season.
13:05Well, those are two minor rule changes that are in effect here for the World Series.
13:09The Rangers couldn't get to it.
13:10The Mets may have their first run.
13:12Buford's rolling home.
13:13And then Planned in decides to stay at third base.
13:16Planned in took a big turn.
13:18Yost held him up.
13:19And the Mets have the bases jammed with only one gun in the top of the seventh inning.
13:26One ball, one stop.
13:29Buford, however, is in position.
13:31Planned in trying to come home on the throw, which is way off the third baseline.
13:36Weiss got a good rip and lined up to fairly deep left field.
13:39And Buford's throw was wild and way wide of the play.
13:44And Buford's throw was on the year he batted 228 overall between the left and right sides
13:48where the receivers started the game and went five and a tough play for Brooks Robinson at third base.
13:58Extremely tough.
14:07Robinson putting on a fielding show here.
14:10This is the hardest play a third baseman has to make.
14:13Charging the ball, picking it up barehanded,
14:16and snapping the throw all in the same motion.
14:19And look at this throw right on target with something on it.
14:24Robinson's made the two best fielding plays of the game so far.
14:27And in the middle of the seventh inning, the score is Baltimore four and New York one.
14:33Green Longoria with series experience.
14:36He was in two ballgames for the Cardinals back in the 64 series.
14:43We are kind of a free slinger.
14:45Yet that outside pitch was fooled by it.
14:48He had a lunge for it and couldn't get to it.
14:50Nine feet down both the left and the right field side.
14:54It does not have the biggest runner since the fourth inning.
14:57A two-out walk given by Taylor to Blair.
15:01And use that safety belt.
15:05Frank Robinson has been retired three times.
15:08He's running, and they've got him in a rundown.
15:10Taylor goes to Clendenin.
15:12Clendenin running back to Weiss.
15:14Weiss running him back, and Weiss will make the putout to retire the side.
15:17It goes one, three, four for the putout.
15:21And that means Frank Robinson will begin the bottom of the eighth inning.
15:25And so at the end of the seventh inning, the score is Baltimore four and New York one.
15:36Screwball, fastball, and a let-up rainbow curve.
15:43Six strikeouts for Cuellar.
15:46He has fanned A.G. twice.
15:48Once looking, and now swinging.
15:51Strike one on the foul ball right into his hand.
15:53Right in the hole between Brooks Robinson and Mark Belanger.
15:57The last inning, the Mets had a rally going.
16:00A run and two hits they picked up.
16:02Now they try to start something of fire with a one-out single by Harrelson.
16:07Cuellar today, and Cuellar might change his strategy a bit against him.
16:13No runs, one hit, and a man left in the top of the eighth inning.
16:19And so, in the middle of the eighth inning, it's Baltimore four, New York one.
16:25Rodgers is a florist in Baltimore's Memorial Stadium.
16:29And in World Series history, the club that has won the first game of a World Series has then gone
16:36on to win 39 of them.
16:38And, however, clubs which have won the first game of the World Series have been beaten back and lost 26.
16:46Frank went from 268 a year ago to 308 this year.
16:51But had that swing out in front.
16:53Two strikeouts for Taylor in relief.
16:56He's faced four men.
16:57He's walked one.
16:59Powell produced a 22 home run a year ago.
17:03He had seven hits against Minnesota pitching.
17:06The Mets swept the Braves, and the Orioles did the same thing.
17:09They swept the Twins.
17:11Three strikeouts and two innings of outstanding relief.
17:14Ron Taylor.
17:14And so, at the end of the eighth inning, the score is Baltimore four and New York one.
17:31One ball, one strike.
17:33Got that dangerous throw and won't make a throw.
17:36Koyar probably realized that he wasn't handling the ball properly.
17:40Also realized he might have had a tight play on Svoboda.
17:43So, in his haste to get to the ball and throw, he lost it completely.
17:47In the league among their catchers, but in both leagues.
17:53In the league, they're going to play out for Koyar, eight of them.
18:04And that would bring the Mets with a tying run to the plate.
18:10Continuing the warm, Rickert, the left-hander, and Watt, the right-hander.
18:16That's Watt to the left and Rickert to the right.
18:19Bamburger still with Koyar.
18:22This is when they want that honest answer.
18:24Are you tired?
18:26But he's right-handed hitting line.
18:28Run to the plate.
18:33Second baseman Johnson goes to first.
18:36And that's the ball game.
18:38Can't see batting for the pitcher has grounded out to end game one of the World Series.
18:43Baltimore has been victorious by a score of four to one.
18:47The recap of the first game.
18:48The final score.
18:50The Orioles, four runs, six hits, and no errors.
18:54The Mets, one run, six hits, and one error.
18:58I got a screwball, the best one today.
19:00You know, I feel pretty good in the first fight in it for the first ball.
19:03But after that, I got a pretty good screwball.
19:05Well, what about this Mets lineup now?
19:07What is your impression of the Mets lineup?
19:09What about AG?
19:10What about Swoboda?
19:11What about some of the other hitters?
19:13Well, no, I tell you, all the Mets, you know, from the first one to the sixth, to the sixth
19:17hitter, you've got to be careful with that.
19:19You know, you can hit a ball out of the park any time, you know, you can make no mistakes.
19:23You've got to put a good ball close.
