00:04The man of the hour has arrived, Shohei Ohtani, that's his protection, Mookie Betts, the Los
00:11Angeles Dodgers, just hours after winning a marathon against the Toronto Blue Jays,
00:16an 18-inning classic, back at it to try to take a surging 3-1 series lead.
00:23So enjoy the out of it, but we got a game later today, all right?
00:27Hey, hey, we got a game later today.
00:33Record-breaking game unlike anything we have ever seen.
00:3719 total pitchers used.
00:39How are the Blue Jays and Dodgers going to follow that up in Game 4?
00:43You know, last night was taxing on both clubs' pens, but it's kind of an all-hands-on-deck
00:48situation.
00:49You kind of figure out who's available and who feels good enough to pitch tonight.
00:54It's a World Series.
00:55Everyone's feeling good.
00:58They like these situations.
01:00You know, we've responded well in these situations.
01:03In terms of second win, no, man.
01:06It's just wake up, get ready to do it again.
01:09How do you follow up reaching base nine times in a game?
01:13If your name's Shohei Ohtani, you do it by taking the ball as the starting pitcher.
01:17For the first time in the World Series, we get to watch Ohtani on the mound.
01:20Yeah, there is no way to top last night.
01:22Oh wait, yes there is.
01:24The greatest show on earth, Shohei Ohtani.
01:27All season long, the Blue Jays have overcome obstacles.
01:30They led the majors in comeback victories.
01:32They rallied in the ALCS after losing the first two games at home, but tonight they face perhaps
01:37their greatest challenge.
01:38George Springer is out of the lineup after leaving last night's game with right side discomfort.
01:43Boba Shett will be the DH.
01:44The Blue Jays say Springer is day-to-day, but they are losing a player who has hit 23 career
01:49homers in the postseason on a night they are facing Shohei Ohtani.
01:53The odds are against them.
01:56Popped up down the left field line.
01:57Kike Hernandez is over to the center.
01:59Makes the catch!
02:01Wow!
02:03Fresh off of last night's craziness.
02:06It's a highlight defensive play to start getting forward.
02:11Kike Hernandez reaching over the short wall and foul ground down the left field line.
02:16A spectacular effort to get out number one.
02:20This is a matchup I wanted to see.
02:22These are two of the greatest stars in our game, and offensively, they have done a nice
02:26job and slowed down Guerrero.
02:28No extra base hits of the breaking balls.
02:31The slower breaking ball is the only pitch that's going to give Guerrero fits.
02:36Ohtani gets him on three pitches.
02:38I know a lot of people think and thought and probably still believe I'm crazy, but this
02:43is where he's the most comfortable is on the mound.
02:45The payoff.
02:46The Shett takes ball four.
02:48And the Jays have their first baserunner, and that's what they're going to have to do.
02:52They're going to have to really battle a guy who can throw a lot of pitches in the strike
02:56zone and pick and choose their moments to make him work as hard as possible.
03:02But the Blue Jays working deep counts against him.
03:05The Shett drew the walk.
03:06And we'll get a head start here with a 3-2 to Barger.
03:08Here it comes.
03:10A shot left side.
03:11And Marcy able to get there and keeps it in the infield, but it's a hit for Barger.
03:15And it's a chance for the Jays in the first.
03:18Just so many moments that felt like they could be the moment that kept on getting topped and
03:23topped again and topped by an even bigger one.
03:26Kirk had one of those early moments.
03:27Wings and pops it up on the infield.
03:29Freddie Freeman at first.
03:32He reaches back and makes the catch.
03:36So back-to-back two-out baserunners stranded by Ohtani.
03:39A scoreless top of the first.
03:41And now he'll start his regiment to get ready for the bottom half.
03:44They're bringing the equipment out to the top rail on the warning track.
03:47Ohtani last night on base all nine times.
03:50His last two home games.
03:52He's been up 13 times.
03:54He's reached base 13 times.
03:57Seven out of seven with five home runs his last two games at Dodger Stadium.
04:02Shane Bieber, 30 years old, out of Laguna Beach, California.
04:05Ohtani checks his swing on a pitch on the outside corner.
04:09And I think that might have been a make-up call because that had the edge.
04:12And Bieber was walking around like he was going to be a K.
04:15Instead, a lead-off walk.
04:16Two down, and at least you get not as quick of a runner at first baseman.
04:20I love the fact that Shohei Ohtani slid in the first inning.
04:24So for the next five or six innings or so, Shohei Ohtani will be pitching with dirt all over his
04:30pants.
04:31You never see that unless it's Shohei Ohtani.
04:33Blue Jays stranded two.
04:34Dodgers have Freeman at first with two out.
04:36And it's 1-1 to Will Smith.
04:38Hit well right center.
04:39Barger curling back toward the track.
04:41Slows up.
04:42Makes the catch on a well-struck flyout to end the inning.
04:46No runs, no hits.
04:471-2-3.
04:48The Blue Jays are sent down on just seven pitches from Ohtani.
04:53Gosh, he has got an extra step here to start game four.
04:57He came off the mound in a flash to record that tapper back to him.
05:01And he gets through the second inning in quick order.
05:05Dodgers trying to solve Shane Bieber in this game.
05:07The native of Laguna Beach who spent six seasons in Cleveland.
05:11Won a Cy Young in 2020.
05:13Mentioned the Tommy John surgery that he had early on last year.
05:16Gets traded to the Blue Jays in July.
05:18Continues to finish off his rehab.
05:20Comes back and was way better than you would ever envision a guy would be after missing that much time.
05:24In the championship series, he won game three.
05:27Dominated in Seattle with eight strikeouts over six innings.
05:30But then in game seven, he was out of there with two outs in the fourth.
05:33One of the things in last night's game that was amazing was these bullpens.
05:37As once he takes the one-hot walk.
05:39Two bullpens that were the sore spots for the clubs.
05:41Combined to throw 26 innings and keep it going deep into the night.
05:46Well, for Tommy Edmond defensively, the first game last night,
05:50he had a key error that sparked the Blue Jays' four-run inning.
05:53But the second game, he made some unbelievable plays.
05:57Waits on this.
05:572-1 from Bieber.
05:59Edmond.
05:59Up the middle.
06:00Base up center field.
06:02Nice and running the bases hard.
06:04Varshall's arm is not good.
06:06First and third wide.
06:07Biggest part of the field on the infield is up the middle.
06:11And that's exactly where he went.
06:14Gets on top of the ball, hits it right back up the middle.
06:17Easy first-to-third situation.
06:19And now we've got our first-run scoring opportunity for the Dodgers.
06:24And Bieber's going to try to induce a ground ball here.
06:27Really, really trying to get a ground ball to shortstop.
06:30Kike Hernandez coming to the plate.
06:32Another one of the themes of last night's game.
06:34Neither team good with runners in scoring position.
06:36They combined to go four for 26.
06:39I would say if he wanted to go for the punch-out now,
06:42you go inside and up or inside off the plate,
06:45get him to be able to swing and miss.
06:48Now you go for the strikeout after all those breaking balls
06:51if Bieber goes to the fastball.
06:53Walking a single, have him at the corners.
06:55Another 2-2 from Bieber.
06:56It is a fastball.
06:58And it's looked at the deep right field.
06:59Barger goes back on it.
07:01Steps out of the running track plenty deep enough
07:03to bring home the game's first run.
07:05The reason I didn't like that away
07:07is it's too easy to lift the ball away for that sack fly.
07:11You've got to be so good inside to be able to do that as a hitter
07:14and pull your hands in.
07:16That pitch actually did him a favor to get that fly ball.
07:20It'll be Isaiah Kiner-Falefa,
07:22Nathan Lucas, and Vlad Guerrero Jr.
07:24Again, no George Springer in the starting lineup.
07:26Ohtani's 1-2 to Kiner-Falefa.
07:29A fastball punched a second.
07:31Tommy Edmund to the first game of the third.
07:34Back to the top of the order,
07:35Nathan Lucas comes up and we go down to Tom Berducci.
07:39Yeah, Shohei Ohtani left the ballpark last night
07:42at 10 after midnight.
07:44Now, as you mentioned, Joe, he loves his sleep.
07:46I'm not sure how much sleep he got in after last night.
07:49But it's interesting, I asked Dave Roberts
07:51about any hesitation about having him be a two-way player tonight.
07:54He had his lineup made up even before Shohei arrived.
07:59He said it was never a doubt that he was going to DH and pitch tonight.
08:05Lucas rips a base hit into right field.
08:08Over to cut it off Hernandez.
08:10He holds Lucas to a single.
08:12There's not much movement with that four-seam fastball.
08:15Throws it about 40% of the time.
08:16You have to be ready for it.
08:18A lot like Nathan Lucas was right there.
08:20Ohtani would not show Guerrero that fastball much
08:22the first time he faced him today.
08:24Now, Guerrero's second look at him tonight.
08:27Ohtani struck him out on three pitches in the first.
08:29There's a fly ball to deep left center field.
08:32Headed back there.
08:33It is gone.
08:34Vlad Jr. gives the Jays the lead.
08:38Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
08:40lines one into the seats in left center.
08:43And the Blue Jays take the lead.
08:45His seventh postseason home run.
08:49And that is a new Blue Jays franchise record.
08:51He broke the tie with Joe Carter and Jose Bautista.
08:55And the Blue Jays need a big night from Vladdy Guerrero Jr.
08:58Off to a good start.
09:00That's only the fourth home run Ohtani has given up this season.
09:04Regular season and postseason.
09:06I'll tell you, this guy's amazing and he's ready for everything.
09:09I mean, this is the first mistake that Ohtani has made and he didn't get it back.
09:37This breaking ball is up, barrel of the back, out in front.
09:41And I said, if a spinner is in the zone, it's a recipe for a lost home run.
09:46All you got to do is backspin it as a hitter and get that barrel to the ball.
09:51And the ball just takes off.
09:53After Vladdy Jr. goes deep against him, he leads off.
09:56On a 2-2 from Beaver.
09:57He fouls it into the glove.
09:59Beaver made his best changeup of the night to strike him out.
10:02Changeup acting like a screwball away from the outside part of the plate.
10:06And again, we talked about it all night last night.
10:09Nobody made those pitches against him.
10:10And this is the part of the game that you've got to watch for that fatigue and the adrenaline running
10:15off.
10:16Breaking pitch gets him swinging, but it was over the plate.
10:19Yeah, he has the stock to get through this lineup.
10:21Don't get me wrong, but this is the part where you get the adrenaline is gone.
10:24And you're now working off of all the training you put in, all the effort to dominate on the mound.
10:32He's going to have to work really, really hard mentally on location from this point out.
10:38Foul out into the glove, but that's back-to-back strikeouts where he didn't put it where he wanted it.
10:42No, the fastball is just a little bit running on him.
10:45He's cutting a couple and missing a couple up.
10:46But his ability to spin the baseball, again, such a weapon for him on a 3-2 count.
10:51A hitter can't just confine to and commit to one particular pitch.
10:58Another 2-2.
10:59Strikes out the side in the fourth.
11:02Put a fastball by him as Ohtani strikes out the side in the fourth inning.
11:07Kirk, Farsho, and Clement all have their tickets punched.
11:11Shohei goes back to work after he struck out the side last inning.
11:16Strikes out Jimenez with a back-foot slider.
11:19Four consecutive Ks.
11:22In there to left center field.
11:23Routine for Kike Hernandez.
11:25Two up and two down in the fifth.
11:28Pace hit the other way from Lucas.
11:31Into the leadoff spot with Springer out.
11:33Moves up one spot in the order.
11:35He's got two hits in this game.
11:36Doubled in his total from the first three.
11:38Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. up after his two-run homer in the third.
11:42It is a fastball right over the middle.
11:44Smoked to center, but the Pajes were halfway home in game four.
11:48Shane Bieber giving the Blue Jays what they need a night after the bullpen carried such a huge load on
11:54both sides.
11:55Dodgers tied it with a homerun from Ohtani last night in the seventh.
11:59There's the time run in the fifth.
12:01Strike three.
12:03Sword from John Tumpane, the home plate umpire.
12:06Second time that Bieber has struck out his pitching counterpart.
12:10In the air to center field, Farsho is there.
12:13And on one pitch, Bieber's not going to let him find much out.
12:17Last night, the Dodger bullpen covered 13 and a third.
12:20The Blue Jays' bullpen covered 12 and two-thirds.
12:22These starters with pressure on them to go deep.
12:24And we got a pitcher's duel developing.
12:26Two-one to the sixth.
12:28In the air to left field, Kike Hernandez drifting back in to get the shot.
12:33Blue Jays trying to tie this series up.
12:35If they can win one of these two games where they are not favored when it comes to the starting
12:39pitching.
12:40Ohtani picks this one off and shoves the first.
12:42Two out.
12:42A wave and a miss.
12:44Strike three.
12:46Strikeout number six ends inning number six.
12:51Shohei Ohtani keeping the Dodgers in game four.
12:54Now we all marvel at Shohei Ohtani.
12:56The Blue Jays are sitting over there with that smile that Vlad Guerrero gave us as we went to break,
13:00saying, hey, Warren's fun.
13:01Here's his one-two pitch to Freeman.
13:03Breaking ball.
13:04Pulled past Guerrero.
13:05Sneaks out of his glove into right field.
13:08A leadoff single for Freddie Freeman.
13:10His second hit of the ballgame.
13:12Two out of the three the Dodgers have.
13:15And it's another two-strike knock for L.A.
13:18Yeah, tough play there.
13:19Tried to get a short hop.
13:20We've watched Guerrero make every single play imaginable at first base.
13:26This one hit too hard and at least only a single.
13:29Line drive center field.
13:31Varsho makes the catch.
13:33The goal-lover in center field.
13:35Dalton Varsho takes a hit away from Will Smith.
13:39And that might be it for Bieber.
13:41Instead of allowing him to face Tosca Hernandez, here comes John Schneider.
13:48And a conversation here at first.
13:50Maybe not.
13:51John says that he's told his starters if he runs out there,
13:54they have a chance to talk their way into staying in the game.
13:56If he's walking, you're done.
13:58John was walking.
14:00But Shane still talked his way into staying in.
14:03That's a line drive base hit, Shigerfield.
14:06Tosca Hernandez scorches one into center.
14:09Tied run into scoring position.
14:11Well, almost off the plate where he wanted it.
14:14And we talked about Hernandez, how he's staying on the ball a lot better here in the last two days.
14:18And that's the shortest two quick trips you're going to see a manager make.
14:22One pitch later, the Dodgers have Shane Bieber out of the ball game and have the Blue Jays bullpen forced
14:28into duty first.
14:29And Mason Flewharty is coming on to deal with the left-hand hitting Max Muncy.
14:34Shane Bieber has given this team a chance to win.
14:37Tied run at second.
14:38Go ahead, run at first.
14:39Muncy sends a fly ball to center field that Dutton Varshow has spotted.
14:44And on one pitch, he gets out number two.
14:46Now it'll be the switch-hitting second baseman, Tommy Edmund.
14:50Swing and a miss.
14:51Strike three.
14:52Got him on a back foot sweeper.
14:54Flewharty comes in, gets the first pitch fly out, and a three-pitch strikeout to end the threat.
15:00On to the seventh we go.
15:01Dalton Varshow bends the first pitch that Ohtani throws into right field, starting the seventh with a single.
15:07Blue Jays lead this game two to one.
15:09And a home run from Brad Jr. back in the third.
15:12Dodgers just one run of support on four hits for Ohtani,
15:15who tries to get it out in the seventh inning for the first time as a Dodger,
15:18and for the first time since July of 2023.
15:22I'm trying to extend a nine-game hitting streak.
15:24A lot of time to extend it last night.
15:27Cranks this ball to left center field.
15:28That's headed for the gap.
15:29That's headed for the wall.
15:32Varshow rounds third and stops on a double from Clement.
15:36Screamer of a line's left.
15:38Puts him at second and third.
15:40This is the point in the game I was talking about,
15:42where your stuff and location has to be really, really good,
15:45because you lose the extension and late life on your pitches.
15:49So location, the later you go, is way more important.
15:53And that's going to be it for Ohtani.
15:56I mean, still a remarkable job to go into the seventh inning
15:59after 18 innings of baseball last night.
16:04Strikes out six, walks just one.
16:07Blue Jays with at least two runs on six hits.
16:10Anthony Bonda is ready to go in that bullpen.
16:13Ohtani leaves to a good hand.
16:15Down 2-1 as Bonda and the Dodger pen takes over.
16:18Bonda faced just one hitter yesterday.
16:20Finished off Tyler Glasnow's last game.
16:23And it started that marathon of relievers.
16:26Dodger infield drawn in.
16:27The Blue Jays already up 2-1, but they got to add,
16:30it's really tough to cling to a one-run lead against the Dodger.
16:33Well, this is when you shorten up
16:34and you're just trying to get the barrel to the baseball.
16:36And not only has he put up a big fight,
16:38he's shown a lot of pitches to IKF behind him.
16:41Seven offered already by Bonda.
16:43This is his first batter faced.
16:45Big part of the Blue Jays' offense
16:46has been the bottom of the order,
16:48contributing through this postseason.
16:50Bonda's eight pitch.
16:51Jimenez comes through with a base hit to left center field.
16:56Varsha's in to score, and it's 3-1.
16:58Andres Jimenez battling the two strikes.
17:01That was more like Blue Jays baseball
17:03that you've been seeing throughout the playoffs.
17:06Runners in scoring position, they have been stingy.
17:08This is literally put the bat on the ball and see what happens.
17:13The more pitches you see,
17:15the more comfortable you become with that slider,
17:18with that fastball.
17:19And he got the off-speed pitch over the heart of the plate.
17:23Tiner for left-hand, scorched to the field,
17:26and Muncie to first, double play!
17:28Wow, that is something you can't do, though.
17:32At first base.
17:33Does his hand get in there under his...
17:35I'm not so sure it does.
17:36Shoot!
17:37Muncie with a quick trigger to get it over there to first.
17:40Again, the call on the field is that he's out,
17:41so do they see enough in New York to overturn this call?
17:45After review, the call on the field is overturned.
17:48The runner is safe.
17:49That is huge for the Toronto Blue Jays.
17:53Mark Pryor's coming out for a visit with Anthony Bonda
17:55because John Schneider has dipped into his bench right here.
17:58He sends up Ty France to pinch hit for Nathan Lucas.
18:02Same aggressive personality he managed last night's game with.
18:05France pinch hitting here in the seventh
18:07for a guy who was two for three tonight.
18:10It was high, let it fly.
18:12Bounce to right side.
18:13Only play as a first goal run comes through the back door.
18:16And right away, that overturn call looms large
18:19as Clement comes in to score.
18:21And an RBI and a pinch hit ground out from Ty France.
18:24And that's going to do it for Anthony Bonda.
18:27Those two runs are charged to Shohei Otani,
18:29but Bonda, after they put Vladimir Guerrero Jr. on intentionally,
18:34unable to pick up where the bullpen left off last night
18:37with the heroic relief for four to one.
18:39Trinan's on for Bichette,
18:40and he was one of the trusted arms in last season.
18:43This championship has struggled mightily this October.
18:45There's another shot to people.
18:47Over the hill, Hernandez, and against the wall.
18:51Bichette hangs out with a long single,
18:53and it's five to one, Blue Jays.
18:56Roll ball RBI, single Bo Bichette.
18:58Five one, Blue Jays in the seventh.
19:01He tagged it out to left.
19:02Like I said, he's slowly starting to look like Bo Bichette.
19:07That dugout is very excited right now.
19:10What a swing from him.
19:12And again, that's an important run.
19:14Yes, Andre Semenes scoring the fifth run of the ballgame is very important.
19:18And if you're Addison Barger, you have to go to work
19:20because there's another important run standing out at third base
19:24in Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
19:26Ground ball outside, pass Mookie Bettson at 6-1.
19:30A fourth spot for the Jays in the seventh.
19:34Dodgers are in business now, but again, those two runs out there,
19:37standing at second and third with nobody out,
19:39are essentially meaningless.
19:41And I'm sure Pete Walker is walking out to tell him that right now.
19:43To do that and maybe to buy some time for Jeff Hoffman,
19:47who just got up and throwing in the Blue Jays pad.
19:49He pitched two innings yesterday.
19:50I imagine they were trying to avoid using him.
19:52It maybe felt like a fresher Varland would be in a better spot here.
19:57Edmund shoots at the third on the ground.
19:59John Clement has it.
20:00Teoscar Hernandez will score the throw.
20:01The first is in time to get Edmund by a step.
20:04It's now 6-2.
