00:00.
00:30And welcome again to the big match.
00:32And three more games for you today, each of them filled with plenty of incident.
00:37For our main match, we go to Stamford Bridge for the London Derby game between Chelsea and Spurs.
00:42Nice put.
00:44Hausman's gone on.
00:45And Hausman with a chance.
00:47Oh, and he's missed it.
00:48What a miss.
00:50Also, Nottingham Forest against Leeds.
00:52Sterling ball.
00:53Jones on the jump.
00:54And number 11 is Eddie Gray.
00:57And the goal has not been allowed.
00:59And Luton against Portsmouth.
01:01He's going to try one.
01:02Travellecock turns.
01:03And Reid's leg.
01:04Here's Jennings.
01:06And there were five goals in that Luton game.
01:08A studio guest today, David Webb of Chelsea.
01:11Welcome to him.
01:11But now let's get on with the action down at Stamford Bridge yesterday between two Jekyll and Hyde sides.
01:16Chelsea, who after a dismal start to the season, now going superbly.
01:20Spurs unbeaten at home, but so far no wins away.
01:23And first of all, it's the Chelsea side.
01:25And with injuries to Boyle and Baldwin, it means a further chance for Paddy Mulligan at number two and Steve
01:30Kemba at eight.
01:32That leaves us with the Spurs side.
01:34And a close-up look at their line-up shows that full-back Cyril Knowles has recovered from an ankle
01:39injury received against Arsenal.
01:40So they are unchanged.
01:42Two great sides, then, who can cancel each other out in so many respects.
01:46Because when it comes to goalscorers, Chelsea, first of all, can point to their own Peter Osgood with 19.
01:53Spurs, meanwhile, can say, what about Martin Chivers with 24?
01:57Then, when it comes to big buys, Chelsea have £170,000 worth of Steve Kemba.
02:02And Spurs have Ralph Coates, who cost them £190,000.
02:06So, as the two skippers, Martin Peters of Spurs and Ron Harris, meet, the referee is Brian Daniels of Raynham
02:12in Essex.
02:13The 52,000 crowd, the Chelsea section having plenty to say at that end.
02:17Countered at the other end by the Spurs supporters.
02:20And there's even one of those marvellous RAF police dogs as a part of the show.
02:24So, Spurs, then, who've yet to win away from home this season.
02:29Kick-off, defending the goal to our left.
02:31White shirts and shorts, yellow stockings against a Chelsea side who've won their last five games
02:36and have been unbeaten in their last ten.
02:40But in derby games, past records don't really count for too much with so much pride at stake
02:45with two such classy sides here.
02:47Here's Kemba.
02:49Challenged by Philip Beale.
02:52And then presented with the ball by Alan Gilsey.
02:55Hudson.
02:56Mulligan.
02:58Who is in for the injured John Boyle.
03:01Hook.
03:02Back to Hollins.
03:08Searching ball into that Spurs penalty area.
03:10And it's Pat Jennings.
03:15Chivers going fast for that one.
03:17And what a beautiful little lay-off for Neymar.
03:20Dempsey coming across.
03:21He's lost to Chivers for the moment.
03:24But Webb picking up Coates and turning the ball into touch for Tottenham's throw.
03:29Chivers already going across to take it.
03:32And that means one of those effortless long throws of his into that Chelsea goal mouth.
03:38Ray Evans.
03:41And Beale.
03:43Peters getting ahead to it.
03:45Dempsey also.
03:47And now Kemba.
03:48Kemba and Coates there.
03:51Hollins.
03:54Two sides who are soon to meet in the semi-finals of the Football League Cup.
04:01First leg of which is here just before Christmas and the second one at Tottenham early in the New Year.
04:09Hudson with the throw for Chelsea.
04:11Houseman.
04:15Hudson.
04:18Perryman there scuttling in.
04:20Hudson finding Hollins who was on another good run.
04:23That should be a corner to Chelsea.
04:26The ball going off Martin Peters.
04:28So Pat Jennings who will be put under pressure.
04:31Knowles at the far post.
04:33Evans at the near post.
04:36Mike England right in there too.
04:38Hudson with the corner.
04:39And that wasn't far away.
04:41But the touch came off the Chelsea player.
04:43Either Osgood or Dempsey who was right up.
04:50Knowles who was having a fine season for Tottenham.
04:52But he was doubtful yesterday with an ankle injury received in the Arsenal match.
04:56But now Cook and Osgood in a lot of space on the right for him.
05:00Hudson going hard into the middle and Houseman too.
05:03Still Osgood.
05:06And now Cook and he turned it in.
05:09No he can't.
05:10And Peters right back there taking a push from his own goalkeeper.
05:14But Spurs for a second or two were in tremendous trouble.
05:19And Chelsea at the moment in these opening five minutes are making the running.
05:25Hudson.
05:28Oh between the legs of Gilsaime to Hollins.
05:31A little dink again.
05:32And Osgood hoping to get on the end of it.
05:34And Tottenham's goal kick.
05:39Well Peter Osgood already showing a bit of appetite for this match.
05:42Perhaps needing a big occasion to pull out the best of him.
05:51Knowles.
05:53And Perriman.
05:55Coates.
05:59Coates.
05:59Knowles.
06:03Coates once more.
06:05Perriman.
06:06Good tackle there by Perriman.
06:08Never shirts a tackle.
06:10First time in there by Peters but now it's Cook again for Chelsea.
06:14Mulligan.
06:21And the feet were high on Martin Peters.
06:24And so it's a free kick for Spurs.
06:31Coates going towards that Chelsea penalty area.
06:33Nowles to take the free kick.
06:37Chivers in fact getting ahead to that one.
06:39And Chelsea holding off a moment.
06:42And Al Kemper to bring it away for them.
06:47And Hudson.
06:52Good jump there by Hausman.
07:04Good jump there by Hausman.
07:08He's left wanting.
07:09And it was Ray Evans who was in the middle of it.
07:12And Hausman who surely should have put Chelsea ahead.
07:16Well he'll be furious with himself for that.
07:20Chances in the first division don't come easier than that.
07:29Neighbour.
07:33Comprehensively beaten though by Paddy Mulligan.
07:37Hudson.
07:41To Hollands.
07:45Oh Osgood there.
07:47Left dangerously loose by that Spurs defence.
07:49And taken with a late tackle by England.
07:51Cook with the shot but it's over.
07:53And Osgood is down.
07:54And it really was a bad tackle by Mike England.
07:57And the referee coming across towards that situation.
08:00But away from England.
08:02Mike England probably a little conscious that he was leaving Osgood a yard or two free.
08:07When that situation developed.
08:11Well Osgood alright again.
08:13Some strapping round his right foot as you can see.
08:19And Pat Jennings to take the goal kick.
08:28Dempsey.
08:31Hausman leaning on Evans.
08:33And in fact Evans penalised.
08:35And I wouldn't have thought there was too much he could have done about that.
08:39He kept his eye on the ball and he had Hausman pushing into him.
08:42And a chance for Hollands to blast another of those famous free kicks of his.
08:47No.
08:47It's Hudson instead to chip it over.
08:49Osgood right in there.
08:50Just passed.
08:58Brilliantly conceded free kick there by Chelsea.
09:01Spurs stealing themselves for the drive from Hollands.
09:06Now Neibor.
09:08Invitingly in space.
09:10Hudson pursuing him.
09:14Perryman.
09:17Neibor.
09:18Evans making the overlap for him.
09:20That's the ball for Ray Evans.
09:22Good cross by Evans.
09:23And a corner to Tottenham.
09:29Well I would think that will make Evans feel a little happier.
09:31And certainly some of his form against Arsenal was good.
09:33Burnetti doing his share of shouting.
09:35Good break by Ray Evans.
09:41Neibor with a kick.
09:42Mulligan waiting for it.
09:45Neibor turning it back first time there.
09:47And now Peters.
09:48Oh and a fine save.
09:50And it's not away yet.
09:51Hudson.
09:52And it's still not away.
09:54But a fine save there.
09:56Reflect save by Burnetti from Martin Peters.
09:59Chelsea now.
10:00With Cook.
10:08And down goes Jennings.
10:10That ball skidding across that patch of mud in that goal mouth.
10:13Not making it easy for him.
10:15Chelsea manager Dave Sexton has deserted his crow's nest on the top of the stand.
10:20Obviously wants a little change of tactics somewhere.
10:22Having a good word with Chris Garland on the left.
10:24The Chelsea substitute.
10:27Now Kemba.
10:30Hudson.
10:31And Oscar trying to get in with the head.
10:32And it fell just behind Cook.
10:34And Kemba.
10:35And to safety for Tottenham.
10:49Dempsey.
10:52Dempsey.
10:53A little moment ago it looked as though Martin Peters was the player who was more seriously hurt.
10:57Ron Harris who has just played that one forward.
10:59Seems to be struggling a good deal more than Peters at the moment.
11:02But Osgood turning that ball in nicely for Kemba.
11:05But Herriman doing tremendous covering again for Tottenham.
11:11Nose.
11:16Gilzean.
11:17And Nose to Chivers.
11:18Desperately trying to get away from that Chelsea defence.
11:20And succeeding in finding Gilzean.
11:22But that's Harris.
11:25And now Dempsey.
11:26And now Dempsey.
11:33Hudson to Harris.
11:37Ron Harris still obviously not feeling himself.
11:43Hollins.
11:45A lot of space there for him and a long range shot but wide enough.
11:53Hollins who really has had a good scoring record this season with 11 goals.
11:57There's four of them from penalties.
12:04Dempsey doing a bit of pushing to get his head to it and being penalised for it.
12:07Tottenham's free kick.
12:09On Chivers.
12:14Harris who really does seem to be feeling the effects of the knock he had a few minutes ago.
12:28Webb.
12:29Letting Cook go ahead with it.
12:30Probably one of the most encouraging sights of all in any afternoon for Chelsea is when Charlie Cook badly wants
12:35to get a touch of the ball all the time.
12:38Good play there by Hollins but Peters to cut it out.
12:42Now to Coates.
12:45Neyver.
12:53Off Paris for Kepa.
12:57Osgood.
12:58Followed by England although it's deep into that Chelsea half.
13:00Hudson.
13:01Mulligan.
13:13Hudson taking this one.
13:18To Cook.
13:21Beal watching him.
13:23And knows.
13:26And he still gets away with it.
13:28Beautiful play there by Cook in such a confined space.
13:30Mulligan to turn it in once more.
13:33Osgood.
13:33On his body.
13:34Beautiful skills by Osgood.
13:36But not quite the shot at the end for Magic.
13:40With a lovely piece of artistic play by Peter Osgood.
13:45In a game that so far in the first half hour has certainly had no shortage of really talented football.
13:53And in that respect Charlie Cook has played his part too.
13:57Hudson.
14:03And Evans.
14:05Another throw to Chelsea and certainly after their patchy form in the opening part of the season.
14:09It's quite easy to see why Chelsea have had this good recent run as Beal gets in that time and
14:14concedes the corner.
14:15And we're now well into injury time at the end of the first half.
14:20Beal and Perryman who've done a wonderful job for Spurs.
14:24And really done so much to keep them afloat on level terms of 0-0.
14:30Caps now facing the last prices of the first half as Hudson takes the corner for Chelsea.
14:36Webb going in.
14:38And Hudson again.
14:42Good piece of play there by Evans coming out so quickly to make it difficult for Hudson.
14:48Hudson with room to cross it once more.
14:50And a header there and a good save by Jennings from Charlie Cook.
15:03And really it would have been no injustice on the run of the play of the first half if Chelsea
15:06had gone in with that one goal lead.
15:11Where the Spurs are conscious of their pour-away record, they look a very withdrawn side so far this afternoon.
15:17And really have had just this one shot.
15:21Saved by Peter Bonetti from Martin Peters.
15:25Certainly had this hard game against Arsenal on Wednesday night.
15:28Though Chelsea had this testimonial match on Tuesday against Rangers.
15:33Now Neymar.
15:38The twinkling skills but the ball into touch again for Chelsea's throw.
15:43But a highly skilful first half and a very entertaining one as well.
15:47Just that one commodity goals missing at the moment.
15:54So there's the half-time whistle with two sides who really have ducked to their entertainment value.
15:59Certainly in the first half and particularly Chelsea.
16:04With Peter Hausman who had a brilliant spell but certainly missed an open goal that would have put them ahead.
16:09Still to come for you to enjoy on the big match this afternoon.
16:11Highlights from Nottingham Forest against Leeds United.
16:13And Luton Town against Portsmouth.
16:16But the half-time score here at a packed Stamford Bridge is Chelsea 0, Spurs 0.
16:22And we'll be back with you in a couple of minutes.
16:37So Chelsea then who've had so much of the first half.
16:39Get us away now at the start of the second.
16:42Hollins.
16:45Leedsman flagging for a push presumably by Ray Evans on Peter Hausman.
16:50No, he's given it the other way.
16:51The referee in fact seemed to think it was that way as well.
16:56But the line's been indicating that it was probably an offside decision there.
17:11Mulligan.
17:14Mulligan again.
17:15Mulligan again.
17:17And Beal once more there for Spurs.
17:24Kemble.
17:29And now it's Gilzeen.
17:35Chivers fighting for the ball there.
17:37Which is something he wasn't doing to very good effect in the first half.
17:42And I'm sure one of the Chelsea substitutes dying to get on, Chris Garland.
17:47Their £100,000 man from Bristol City.
17:54Gilzeen.
17:55Nice ball there for Perryman.
17:57And now for Evans.
18:01Naber.
18:02Beaten by Harris.
18:04Evans versus Harris.
18:05And Harris comes away with it.
18:06And Evans is down holding his leg.
18:09Osgood.
18:12And now it's Coates.
18:15Turn nicely there for Gilzeen.
18:18And Martin Peters having a word with the referee.
18:20I think he feels that Ray Evans might be badly hurt.
18:26Now it's Coates.
18:28Now Beal.
18:31Beal putting it in a touch so that the trainer can come on to have a look at Ray Evans.
18:40Spurs give her Alan Mullery.
18:41Who's having this stomach trouble.
18:45An injury there that is taking a bit of time to heal.
18:48And looking anxiously there towards Ray Evans.
18:53And young John Pratt who filled the number four shirt of Alan Mullery for a few weeks and did it
18:58to a very good effect too.
18:59Well Evans not too badly the worst for wear.
19:09Cook.
19:16Back to Mulligan.
19:18Long driving ball there towards Haussmann.
19:21Osgood right in there too.
19:23Was it handball?
19:24The linesman is flagging.
19:26But is he going to give it inside?
19:27Jimmy Neighbors hand it was with the ball touched.
19:31Osgood smiling away.
19:33I think he half suspected that was a penalty.
19:35And it would be very interesting to look back and see whether in fact that ball was just inside the
19:40area or just outside it.
19:42The referee is saying it was a good two yards outside.
19:46Jimmy Neighbors I would think vastly relieved.
19:47The free kick then to Chelsea.
19:49Between Hollins.
19:51And Hudson.
19:56And just passed from Hollins.
20:02I don't think even Pat Jennings for all his flying dive could have got to that one.
20:11Skipper getting some advice from the touchline.
20:14Or a push there by Webb on Peters.
20:17Unmistakable.
20:19Whatever David Webb may say, that must have been a push on Martin Peters.
20:27And he gives Spurs the free kick.
20:35I wonder if we can get another of those.
20:37Martin Peters flicks over the wall.
20:39He's put it for Chevers to hit it first time.
20:47It must be a long time since Martin Peters has had so quiet a game as this.
20:52By far and away, Tottenham's top scorer last season.
20:55And 24 already to his credit this season.
20:58And really without a shot so far.
21:00Chelsea trainer Harry Medhurst, their former goalkeeper.
21:03And at West Ham too, of course.
21:07Changed his mind about playing it for Chivers.
21:09But now Chivers might get another chance.
21:10There's no Webb in the touch again.
21:13But Spurs' long throw with Martin Chivers.
21:18Again, no effort.
21:19But all the distance you would want.
21:22And Gilzean turning it back.
21:23Coates now.
21:24And down goes Bonetti from Ralph Coates.
21:32Again, the long throw that causes a certain amount of trouble.
21:54Cyril Knowles.
21:56Cyril Knowles.
22:01Great challenge there by Chivers on Mulligan.
22:03Gilzean to lay that off nicely for Coates.
22:07Evans has gone streaking down the right for Tottenham.
22:09And that's beautifully weighted by Coates for Evans.
22:12And a corner to Spurs.
22:18That was much more like Ralph Coates as well.
22:20A beautifully weighted ball there for Evans down the right.
22:23Neighbours going across to take the corner.
22:25And England has come right up for it.
22:29Osgood back with him.
22:35They thought about a short one for a moment.
22:37Now Neighbours.
22:38A long one.
22:40Peters there with his head.
22:42Mulligan now for Chelsea.
22:50Beal versus Cook.
22:53And Beal a long way back to Pat Jennings.
23:03Chivers again beaten in the air.
23:04That time by David Webb.
23:05And now it's with Hudson.
23:07John Hollands.
23:14Dempsey.
23:24Neva.
23:29Dempsey.
23:30Hudson.
23:31Good play by Chelsea.
23:32Dempsey to Osgood.
23:36Falling for Hudson.
23:38Swept nicely there for Kemba.
23:41A little fortunate.
23:41It hit him on the back.
23:45Aimed again.
23:46There.
23:47A chance for Cook.
23:47And a goal!
23:49For Chelsea by Charlie Cook.
23:56Beautiful ball though in the first place.
23:58That set it up.
24:01For Kemba on the right.
24:03And Cook taking his cross superbly.
24:06To give Jennings no chance.
24:10So Chelsea then.
24:12Leading by a goal to nil.
24:13With 16 minutes of the second half gone.
24:17And that was only Charlie Cook's third goal of the season.
24:26And now Spurs.
24:27With this bad away record.
24:29Remember they haven't won away from home this season.
24:33Face a Chelsea that are a goal up.
24:35And a Chelsea side.
24:36That have conceded only five goals in their last ten games.
24:41So a wonderful defensive record that Spurs have got to break now.
24:45Now Webb to take the free kick for Chelsea.
24:54Osgood winning it in the air.
24:55Cook.
24:55A first timer.
24:57But Jennings behind it.
25:02Knowles.
25:08Webb to head it away.
25:10But that's Perryman.
25:11Now Coates.
25:12Naver on the right.
25:15But well taken out by Harris.
25:17Naver if anything looked just a little lightweight this afternoon.
25:20And the Chelsea supporters.
25:23Scarves a lot.
25:24Delighted with that one goalie.
25:29Perryman to Peters.
25:32Good shot there by Peters.
25:33And he called for a good save too from Burnetti.
25:37Took that short pass from Perryman well.
25:39And with men closing in on him still got it in.
25:45Chivers first to react to that ball that was allowed to go a surprisingly long way.
25:51But now Harris.
25:56Cook.
26:07Good piece of play by Houseman.
26:09Cook.
26:11And now Hollins with a chance to hit one.
26:14Just past that Spurs post again.
26:24And now Gillzean.
26:25Now knows.
26:34Nice little one-two there with John Pratt the substitute on for Gillzean.
26:38Naver.
26:40Pratt.
26:44Across there for Peters to go.
26:45Storming in on it.
26:49Hudson.
26:50Mulligan.
26:51A long way clear.
26:52Mulligan really has had a good game.
26:55Evans to Coates.
26:59Evans again.
26:59A chance to cross this one.
27:01So much room for him to do it.
27:03And Chivers.
27:04And he quite couldn't force it home.
27:07Very nearly got in there to force it home.
27:13But very good, brave goalkeeping by Peter Burnetti.
27:17And Chelsea winning the free kick.
27:25Good pass by Evans too.
27:31Peters forward again.
27:33But Webb as safe as he has been the whole afternoon.
27:36Mulligan.
27:39And now Hollins.
27:44And now goes Houseman.
27:45He's all right.
27:46He's onside.
27:47But Jennings is there before it.
27:57England.
28:01To Evans.
28:06Knowles.
28:07Just a shade over two minutes left now.
28:10Peters.
28:11They've really got to manufacture something out of nothing now.
28:14Spurs.
28:15And here's Ray Evans surging forward for him again.
28:18Coates.
28:21Fair look across there.
28:22Peters going in.
28:23And just over.
28:24For Martin Chivers.
28:27And that's it.
28:29Chelsea take their run of wins to six.
28:32And Spurs have still the win away from home.
28:35Charlie Cook.
28:36The man who scored the only goal of a high class game full of the right sort of talents.
28:42Here at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.
28:46Chelsea now take it to 11 without a win.
28:48Without defeat rather.
28:53Steve Kemba coming off.
28:55And Charlie Cook.
28:56So much invention in this Chelsea attack.
29:00So the final score here at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.
29:03Chelsea 1.
29:05Spurs 0.
29:07And the Chelsea manager Dave Sexton and chairman Brian Mears both confirmed afterwards that
29:11that was probably Chelsea's best home performance of the season.
29:13Spurs manager Bill Nicholson would simply say we were very disappointing.
29:26Still to come for you today to enjoy your highlights of Nottingham Forest against Leeds
29:30and Luton against Portsmouth.
29:31But now let's meet a man who had a couple of stitches in a head wound after that game
29:34at Chelsea yesterday.
29:35Chelsea defender David Webb.
29:37With him Jimmy Hill.
29:38Last time you were on David we could see the stitches.
29:40This time they're hidden under that beautiful hair.
29:42But Chelsea's great improvement yesterday.
29:44Everybody enjoyed that game.
29:46Coming sort of at the end of a long run of better performances when you were knocked out
29:50of Europe.
29:50What's brought the difference?
29:52I think it's an all-round belief in each other.
29:55I think that's particularly what's instigated a change in the mood and everything.
30:01You know we've got players all wanting to play for each other.
30:03They're helping each other, working for each other.
30:06And I think it showed up yesterday against Tottenham.
30:08Were you a bit complacent at the start of the season?
30:10I think complacency starts from a feeling of overconfidence which possibly we had last
30:17year when we played Real Madrid.
30:18We came back.
30:19We had a very short summer and we came back and probably we had a little bit of a hangover
30:25from the Real Madrid game.
30:27A hangover?
30:28I mean a hangover.
30:29You're not going to hangover.
30:31What about individual performances of players during that time who've suddenly improved?
30:36Well I don't think anyone can outshine Alan Hudson for his improvement.
30:41And Peter Burnetti at the back.
30:44Alan Hudson played a big part in that goal yesterday and I think that's probably his
30:48finest game of the season.
30:50I was a bit disappointed in the way from a very promising start he'd slipped back but
30:53he seems to have recaptured all of his old form.
30:56He's a tremendous start to this goal.
30:58Well he's absolutely, you know, he's got his old feeling back again.
31:02You know he plays this one-two with John Dempsey back again.
31:05John does a terrific ball up here to Peter Osgood.
31:09And this type of move that...
31:11Ozzy's showing no mean skill there to get away from Mike England's sliding tackle.
31:16But it's this ball that spreads out the play that really opens up the defence.
31:20There are four Spurs players there beating as it's aimed away for them.
31:23And a little behind trap there by Steve Kemba.
31:26But it's as the cross comes over I think Cyril Knowles won't want to see this very much
31:30because he ducks his head and takes his eye off the ball there.
31:33Leaving Charlie Cook not much time.
31:35But he didn't need very much time and he flashed it straight in the net.
31:40What's brought about this with Alan Hudson?
31:42I'm very interested in this young lad because the first time I saw him I thought
31:46what a tremendous talent he had.
31:48And then suddenly it all appeared to just fritter away.
31:52Well I think he had a very big disappointment the other year when we were in the cup final.
31:58And he's taken him a year or so to get over it.
32:01I mean he's still a very young fella.
32:03And he's just got married and he's got a stability now that possibly he may not have had.
32:07I don't know.
32:07But what he's done now he's brought himself back into line.
32:10And he's a much more mature player than I've ever seen.
32:12Tremendous performance yesterday.
32:14But extraordinarily enough although people might have said you should have won by three or four goals.
32:17In the end of course you could have almost let a draw get into the score sheets.
32:22Yeah well I think that was particularly my fault.
32:25There was a time there I let Martin Chivers get behind me and he had a blinding header.
32:30What about in the first half though?
32:32There was this point blank save there from, before we look at that one, from Martin Peters.
32:38Those reactions of Peter Bonetti.
32:41Quite fantastic.
32:43Now let's look at that second half one where you've already taken the blame.
32:46But we can see really who it was who pulled you out of trouble.
32:51There's the cross.
32:54You've got caught with Chivers but Peter Bonetti the cat on the floor.
32:59He's had a spell.
33:00People still talk about his World Cup performance very unfairly in a way.
33:04It's one of those things that's always dragged up.
33:06But over the past few weeks you've hardly let in any goals at all.
33:09His form has been remarkable.
33:11Very remarkable.
33:11I think what Peter is so good at is that when he's not in the game he's actually in it.
33:16Because the ball will come up at the end of the field and all of a sudden he'll have to
33:20be in the game.
33:21And a lot of goalkeepers can't respond so quickly.
33:23But Peter responds very quickly and you always find a ball that's flashing past you.
33:27You think oh he's, you know that's in.
33:29And he's always leaping across his goal and pulling them down.
33:32Marvellous.
33:33Well it was a very good all-round performance yesterday.
33:35How do you see the rest of the season going for Chelsea?
33:37You're in the semi-final of the League Cup.
33:38You're still in the FA Cup.
33:40I mean not had a chance to be knocked out.
33:42The League you're beginning to creep up on all the other London clubs.
33:46Well if I was to be a gambling man it's just the way I'd like to see my horse win
33:50a race.
33:51For the League?
33:52For anything.
33:53Because I think you know it's just the right time of the season to start going.
33:56It's just like I'd like to see my horse start to come to win a race in a mole race
34:01or something.
34:01Yeah.
34:02Well all the Chelsea Stallions there at Stamford Bridge they certainly showed class form yesterday.
34:07And let's hope David that they continue to do that for the rest of the season.
34:11I hope you might.
34:11It's worth watching.
34:14Well in fact it was worth watching yesterday and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
34:17But there were just a couple of tackles which I want to draw your attention to.
34:20The first one by Mike England on Peter Osgood.
34:23And what you have to decide here as Hollies plays the ball over is whether in fact Mike England was
34:29going for the ball or whether he was going for the man.
34:31He lunges his foot through.
34:33It's a typical England tackle.
34:34But I think one could say there although Osgood fell very heavily that there was some justification in arguing that
34:41England went for the ball there as hard as he in fact did go for it.
34:44But the second tackle which Ron Harris makes on Ray Evans I see no justification in claiming anything else but
34:51it's the kind of tackle that we can do without on football fields.
34:54Just look now.
34:56You'll see Harris in the dark shirt there win the ball and then chase in after it.
35:00This is in slow motion and it's the tackle in its entirety.
35:03Now we'll look again and stop the action just at the point where Harris goes in for that ball.
35:09Evans has gone for the ball. Harris' foot is clearly over the top of the ball.
35:14And I sat very close to that incident yesterday and from my seat I would have certainly taken Harris' name
35:20for that one tackle and most probably would have sent him off.
35:23Because that is a kind of dangerous tackle in football that I certainly for one don't want to see.
35:27So much for those two incidents.
35:28What about Spurs?
35:30Well for me it cleared up the mystery of Spurs yesterday because they played so well when we've gone to
35:34White Hart Lane I wondered why they couldn't win matches away.
35:37The answer is very simple.
35:38Their players don't fight and tackle hard enough to gather points consistently away from their home ground.
35:44I think it was typified most with an old player and a young player.
35:47Alan Gilzean didn't seem to relish the game at all yesterday and in the end was pulled off.
35:51And young Jimmy Neighbour there who is obviously still learning the game and plays so well in front of his
35:57own crowd
35:57showed that there's a lot more to learn about football for him yet before he can give a contribution both
36:02home and away.
36:03So the Spurs mystery cleared up.
36:05A wonderful afternoon's entertainment for all of us and a question mark over the future of both London clubs.
36:11I suppose the real questions being are Chelsea coming up on the rails as David Webb suggests and what are
36:16Spurs going to do about that away form?
36:18Maybe those questions could be answered in those tremendous League Cup semi-finals that are coming up.
36:22But now it's time for some more action and for that we go to Luton where it hasn't really been
36:25a very happy season for them.
36:27I noticed that yesterday the Luton supporters club were handing out leaflets saying please support our team a little more.
36:32Well let's see how that worked out as we pick up Luton against Portsmouth, commentator Gerry Harrison and Luton are
36:38in white.
36:40There's Chris Nichol conceding the first corner of the game in the second minute.
36:48Owen Hand is at the back of the penalty area so is Jenkins.
36:53Reynolds going to the near post, the short one, right across the face of the area.
36:58Keane there to get it away.
36:59And there it is from Reynolds.
37:03And what an abject piece of luck for Luton.
37:07Mike Keane's header hitting Reynolds here and leaving Tony Reid, the goalkeeper, absolutely helpless.
37:21Busby a click on, straight to Yulden though.
37:24To hand, McCann.
37:28Portsmouth seem to have just that little bit more time and just that little bit more accuracy and here's Ley
37:32going for a good ball from McCann.
37:34Over the far side now for Portsmouth players if he can get a cross in.
37:37Jabril Cox the far man but he's got to get past Givens first and Givens gives it back to McCann
37:42anyhow.
37:45Good play by McCann, can he try one?
37:47Reynolds going to shoot.
37:50And so easy from that distance.
37:53But made by McCann, an error in the first place by Givens and half the Luton Town defence standing still
38:03and Portsmouth go two up.
38:10Oh and Jorden flicking it past almost caused more trouble with it.
38:15And now at last a roar of support from this Luton crowd.
38:21Another one, number seven.
38:25Six minutes into the second half.
38:26Gordon Hindson, Keane coming to the near post.
38:29Out comes standing, changes his mind.
38:31Keane.
38:37Well that is the breakthrough and the man who thoroughly deserves it.
38:46Ten men.
38:49Now it's 2-1 and Mike Keane with his second goal of the season puts Luton in with some sort
38:58of a chance.
39:06Well up by Nicol under terrific pressure.
39:08Keane thumbing it away.
39:13Very little wits in the Luton attack.
39:17Of course they can't afford it really with only playing with only ten men.
39:21But it means the flanks are quite useless very often.
39:29Quickly in there by Nicol.
39:31And now it's Luton breaking again.
39:32Here's Hindson, can he turn one up?
39:34And try one.
39:35Hindson.
39:35Oh he's there!
39:37And Standen absolutely helpless with that one.
39:41It was slow across his goal but give the credit to Gordon Hindson.
39:46And the salute says that's his first goal for Luton.
39:51And what a time to get it.
39:54And there goes Gibbons.
39:56He doesn't look like as if he's got an injury now.
39:58It's always in the post!
40:01And Gibbons, the limp suddenly comes back.
40:04Here's Anderson.
40:06Anderson's going to get one.
40:07Oh he's there!
40:14And with three minutes to go, it's Anderson.
40:25But most of the congratulations of the Luton players going over the other side of the field to Don Gibbons.
40:37And Anderson himself congratulating Don Gibbons, the injured man who made that break.
40:47So we are a really tremendous comeback there by Luton Town.
41:00Time now for some more action and for that we go into the Midlands again.
41:02Where Nottingham Forest, so struggling so hard near the bottom of the First Division, were at home to Leeds United
41:07surging towards the top.
41:09The commentator at Nottingham was Hugh Johns and Nottingham Forest will be the team in the Dark Shirts.
41:21That's Clark, they're not inside.
41:25Taking it on, Lorimer, very nearly.
41:28Forest breaking back.
41:30Barry Lyons, through the middle, O'Kane.
41:33Oh, too short.
41:35O'Neal had gone too early.
41:37Lorimer's onside.
41:39Taking on Hindley.
41:41Little Chip and he's there.
41:43Oh, what a magnificent little goal.
41:46Peter Lorimer.
41:49That was a piece of cool courage, cool, deliberate action by Peter Lorimer.
41:54It's 1-0 Leeds.
41:58And that was just about as most professional a goal as you can hope to see from Lorimer.
42:03Goalkeeper well off his line, he started to blast it, saw how far the goalkeeper was out, and a delicate
42:08little chip right into the back of the net.
42:101-0 Leeds.
42:14Robertson.
42:15O'Neal, and the referee has given the advantage.
42:20Cormac.
42:21Fine ball for Lyons.
42:25Moore.
42:27Moore again.
42:29Took it a fraction too far.
42:31Took it a fraction too far.
42:33I'd love to be able to count up the number of passes that Forrest strung together there.
42:377 or 8 at least, I would think.
42:39Keeping possession of the ball.
42:42And the referee, pointing.
42:44The finger.
42:47The finger of referee Sid Cayley.
42:49Who has he pointed at?
42:50And he's reaching for his book.
42:55Reaching for his book.
42:59And it's not Peter Hindley, is it?
43:03Who is he going to?
43:06Sammy Chapman.
43:08The mystery solved at last.
43:11Well, at least the mystery of who is getting booked has been solved.
43:14Sammy Chapman it is.
43:18Obviously for something he must have said to the linesman.
43:30Well, the finger of referee Sid Cayley making it quite clear.
43:36That's once and twice you go off.
43:39And he's off.
43:40Sammy Chapman is off.
43:46Robertson getting a touch, but only as far as Giles.
44:17Mick Jones going against Hindley.
44:19All inside.
44:19Clark sniffer-clark nipping in the shot through a Forrester legs into the net.
44:24And that's how it finished.
44:252-0 to Leeds United.
44:26The pictures there came from ATV.
44:28And they've at least helped us a little bit in helping to solve the mystery of the sending off of
44:32Chapman of Nottingham Forest.
44:33They tell us it was for an infringement by Chapman on the Leeds United striker Mick Jones.
44:37Well, that's it from today.
44:38Hope very much you've enjoyed it.
44:40We leave you, of course, with the goal that set Chelsea swinging yesterday.
44:42But it really was an afternoon of great emotion.
44:45And after you've seen the goal, let's have a look at some of the characters who were left a little
44:48frustrated on the sidelines at Stamford Bridge.
44:57Ava.
45:02Dempsey.
45:02Hudson.
45:04Good play by Chelsea.
45:05Dempsey to Osgood.
45:08Falling for Hudson.
45:10Swept nicely there for Kemba.
45:13A little fortunate.
45:14It hit him on the back.
45:17Aimed again.
45:19There are a chance for Cook.
45:20And a goal!
45:21Okay, let's go!
