00:31He's coming.
00:32Hey!
00:33Hey!
00:34Where you f****** are you?
00:37Hey!
00:38Hey!
00:42Hey!
00:43Hey!
00:45UK Coast Guard.
00:57I don't want you to put yourself out of the boat in the morning, but it's a shock.
01:15In five waves, yeah?
01:17An hour or two hours ago that you've got started.
01:19And chest pain, aim, just keep breathing.
01:22Just keep breathing.
01:27Hi, mate.
01:33Hi, Jay.
01:34I've got some evidence bringing to show you.
01:37You still around?
01:38Yeah, I'm in the office, so just pop in.
01:42I'm just on my way in.
01:43I'll see you shortly.
01:57So what have we got here?
02:14Quite a serious incident that's involved a commercial fishing vessel and a private fishing vessel.
02:22I just sent you a video.
02:24It speaks for itself.
02:25Let's have a look.
02:27This is on the Blackbird.
02:28Private fishing vessel.
02:29It's owned by the guy in the red jacket.
02:31The other guy is Jake.
02:33He is a YouTuber.
02:34Okay.
02:35He's videoing it.
02:36And I can see what's looming in the background.
02:39That's probably a hundred meters away, if that.
02:42I'm coming in fast.
02:43Yeah.
02:44What's that boat?
02:45About 150, 160 tons.
02:47Huge.
02:48Wow.
02:49The fishing vessel just smacked straight into the back of them.
03:01That's shocking.
03:02Have these chaps got any injuries at all?
03:06Nothing major.
03:07Wow.
03:08Looking at that, it's incredible that this hasn't been a double fatality.
03:16If you just go back again.
03:19At this point, you can see Jake's gone out of shot, but Jake has actually physically got
03:24hold of the anchor chain and he's pulling the boat along it to get it out of the way.
03:28Right.
03:29I think the actions of Jake has saved their lives, hasn't it?
03:35Yeah, completely.
03:36If he hadn't done that, it would have gone straight to the middle of the boat and we'd
03:40have been dealing with two fatalities.
03:42Wow.
03:43He was quick thinking.
03:45That is a shocking piece of footage.
03:48Does the vessel stop after this has happened?
03:51No.
03:52No?
03:53Doesn't stop at all.
03:54They never saw the vessel again.
03:55Okay.
03:59It's clear that there's a significant breach of merchant shipping legislation here.
04:04This is a very serious offense.
04:07We need to launch an investigation into exactly what's happened here.
04:11Yeah.
04:12We know the victims, but we don't know the name of the vessel.
04:16We don't know who the skipper is.
04:18Witnesses as well.
04:19We don't know who else was on the vessel.
04:21Yeah, there could easily be others on there that would have seen it.
04:25We are lucky that two men haven't died there, so we need to find out who that skipper was,
04:30get them questioned as quickly as possible.
04:33You okay, Coast Guard?
04:34Do you hear me?
04:35Yes, I can hear you.
04:36Yes.
04:37Hello.
04:38I'm duty officer right now.
04:39Okay, and sorry, who is it you're calling from?
04:40From Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Madrid.
04:42We have been informed by our telemedical assistance service.
04:58We have been informed by our telemedical assistance service.
05:08There is a fishing vessel that two crew members, they had an accident with a winch.
05:15One of the crew members has injuries in a leg and the other one is trapped with a winch.
05:25They are required to be evacuated as possible to a halt.
05:33Alright, I'll ring the scramble line now.
05:45Good morning, it's Thornaway.
05:47Good morning, it's James at Air Rescue.
05:50I've got a pretty serious incident to task you guys to.
05:54It's a Spanish fishing vessel and it's got two very severely injured crewmen.
06:00And have you got injuries of the people on board please?
06:03One casualty is trapped in the winch.
06:06And they're some way off, they're 207 kilometres north-northwest of Thornaway.
06:12Okay, can you get a lap long to that please?
06:20Yeah, got it.
06:21This is where the Ladara is at the moment.
06:22They're way out to the north-west of the Hebrides.
06:24Potential hospital options.
06:25We've got the Faroes.
06:26Yeah.
06:27Might be an option if the wind changes.
06:28Essentially an option, yeah.
06:29We really have to run the tanks down.
06:30Otherwise, Stornaway, Inverness or Glasgow.
06:31It would have to be quick to get to Glasgow.
06:32Back to Stornaway, I think for this one.
06:33Back to Stornaway, yeah.
06:34Back to Stornaway.
06:35Back to Stornaway, yeah.
06:36Back to Stornaway.
06:37We're getting a sat phone number for the vessel.
06:38And we'll ask them to turn towards the Western Isles to cut down the distance.
06:41Max fuel for that.
06:42Yeah.
06:43Yeah.
06:44Yeah.
06:45Yeah.
06:46Yeah.
06:47Yeah.
06:48Yeah.
06:49Yeah.
06:50Yeah.
06:51Yeah.
06:53Yeah.
06:54Yeah.
06:55Yeah.
06:56Yeah.
06:57Yeah.
06:58Yeah.
06:59Yeah.
07:00Yeah.
07:01Yeah.
07:02Yeah.
07:03Yeah.
07:04Yeah.
07:05There we go.
07:06Max fuel.
07:07Slight performance penalty, but I think it's better to have a gas.
07:09Hi, Pete.
07:10It's JC.
07:11If you could put max fuel in the cab, that'd be great.
07:18Call from Madrid.
07:22One of the crew members has suffered an amputation of the leg.
07:26Okay.
07:29Crew trying to stop bleeding.
07:31Team Archer request immediate evacuation.
07:33OK.
07:34OK.
07:35OK.
07:36OK.
07:37OK.
07:38OK.
07:39OK.
07:40OK.
07:41OK.
07:42OK.
07:43OK.
07:44OK.
07:45OK.
07:46OK.
07:47U.K. Rescue, U.K. Rescue, this is Rescue 948.
07:59We're just starting up at Stornaway.
08:00You're going to have four persons on board.
08:02Adurance of 4,110 minutes.
08:05The guy with the leg amputation is free, but they just can't stop his bleeding.
08:21And the other is still trapped in the winch.
08:23A bit like if you spring us up to 1,000 feet, mate, try and get a bit of tailwind.
08:46Looking at the fuel, Glasgow is still an option now, if they need to go to the major trauma center.
08:51But you lose that option after roughly 30 minutes on the day.
08:58Wanderers is still trapped.
09:00And I'm concerned how we're actually getting out of that winch.
09:15Rescue 948 have been scrambled.
09:18If, for whatever reason, they can only rescue the guy who's lost a leg, I need a plan B.
09:26Potentially, we're looking at Rescue 151 attending.
09:35Hello.
09:36Hello, it's James at Air Rescue.
09:40Can I please forward deploy you?
09:43Roger that.
09:44UK Rescue, UK Rescue, this is Rescue 948.
09:59We have also tasked Rescue 151 from Inverness.
10:05UK Rescue, Rescue 948, that's copied.
10:08Arriving on scene.
10:09I'm just looking at a possible transfer.
10:14It's pretty cladded.
10:23A lot of items on the deck for you now.
10:25Hopped.
10:29If you come alongside, are you ready for your first office?
10:31Yes, mate, yeah.
10:34Are you happy?
10:34This is a start position.
10:36Yeah, looks good.
10:38Method then, we'll descend, deploy now, and climb to the operating height.
10:43I've just been told to the second man, he is no longer trapped.
11:07He has sustained various broken bones in his legs.
11:21Go ahead, ma'am.
11:23Yeah, I've got the two casualties.
11:25They're both pretty bad.
11:26We, I think we're going to have to take both at the same time.
11:29It's still surprising even now, something went seriously wrong here.
11:59Extraordinary.
12:07We have no idea what's happened on that vessel that's caused it to do that.
12:12There may have been some kind of emergency.
12:14We don't know, and we have to find that out,
12:16so that we can get a full understanding of what's happened.
12:21Fortunately here, you can see, as you move a bit further on,
12:26you can see the IMO number.
12:29That's specific for the vessel.
12:31It's a bit like a vehicle identification number for boats.
12:35I'll be able to trace the vessel from that.
12:37I found the vessel, which is the Margaret Ann.
12:46Fairly big scalper.
12:48The registered owner has actually leased the vessel to another fishing company based in Brixham.
12:53I can speak to them directly, find out what the state of play is, safety folders, copies of route planning, etc.
13:00Who the crew are, what their qualifications are, and in particular, who the skipper is.
13:05We'll speak to them, get statements from them.
13:07At this stage, obviously, we're just trying to make initial inquiries.
13:11That way we can get a full understanding of what's happened.
13:14I've managed to speak to most of the crew that are available.
13:34One is the second-in-command.
13:37He had previously been on the bridge just before the incident.
13:43The skipper had relieved him.
13:45Most of the others were down at the rear of the vessel.
13:47They were completely unaware of having hit the vessel until they heard shouting through an open porthole.
13:55So they ran up to the wheelhouse from the back of the boat to find out what was going on.
14:01They got in there and found out that the skipper was actually asleep, and they physically had to wake him up.
14:08That's undoubtedly why it hit the back of their boat.
14:11Definitely starting to ring alarm bells for the competition of the skipper.
14:23The whole incident can really only boil down to him.
14:27So I've arranged to meet the skipper down at Plymouth Marine Office, where I'm going to do the voluntary interview under caution.
14:36If there is an admission from him, then absolutely we'll take him to court.
14:41But we'll see what he has to say.
14:57A rescue knife for eight.
14:58Intentions are asked to take both casualties.
15:01Tell them to stand down.
15:03One five, one no.
15:04No.
15:11I've got the two casualties packaged now, at least two stretchers.
15:17That's copy now.
15:25Rescue helicopter nine for eight.
15:27Just going to pass you a highline brief.
15:28Are you ready to copy?
15:29Over.
15:29Three, two, one.
15:43Clear to win.
15:45I'm here to dispatch one.
15:47On the left.
15:49Get to play.
15:50Try to get the oil not to the stretcher station.
16:02Roger.
16:03Roger.
16:03Roger in.
16:07Reaching in.
16:09Reaching in.
16:11Perfect.
16:12Waste to pilot.
16:13Reaching pilot.
16:14Reaching pilot.
16:16Watch out.
16:17Nice and quick chase, nice and quick.
16:30Venture in, just back one another.
16:33Venture in. Venture in.
16:37Venture in.
16:38Left one only.
16:40Go back your left hand 7 o'clock.
16:43Get away from the aerial.
16:46It's at 50 feet.
16:48Big point, 50 feet, big point.
16:50Roger.
16:52Get to play.
16:56We're talking to you.
16:58Set and ask for 60.
17:01I get it.
17:03Steady.
17:06Steady.
17:08Steady.
17:11Get to find the landing from home.
17:18Casualty one has deteriorated quite considerably.
17:29If we can get this thing on the ground as quickly as possible and get the transfer complete, that would be great.
17:36Stay at 500 feet, mate.
17:38Get the speed on.
17:40Guys, are you going to go to medical isolation in the back?
17:42Yeah, please.
17:43Okay, just to clarify, before we go quiet, routing to Western Isles Hospital.
17:47ETA there, it's going to be roughly 0755.
17:53I've been a paramedic for 30 years now.
17:57We'll get used to these things.
17:59We don't get traumatized by it.
18:01We'll just treat what we see.
18:03We're limited to what we can do.
18:06A lot of our treatment actually stems from what we call battlefield medicine.
18:10Primary care is to stop the bleeding and stop the condition worsening.
18:15Given the severity of these injuries, survival times are minimal.
18:32You could die within minutes.
18:34It's my concern that the casualties would not make it.
18:38I don't know how they were still alive when we actually reached the hospital.
18:57As with every casualty that's got anything trauma related, that patient or casualty will deteriorate very quickly.
19:07Time is of the essence.
19:08You're in the hospital.
19:09You're in a lot of pain just now.
19:12We just have no control over the outcome.
19:15We just have to do our best and see if they could survive.
19:37We just have to do our best.
19:44I don't know.
19:45To do my job.
19:46Let me look at you.

27:47Right.
27:53Put him in the back of the truck to let him out, Adam,

28:47You were such a good dog.
28:48Brilliant.
28:49I am a dog owner and I have been a dog owner for many years.
28:55some of the team call me the dog whisperer if you've got a pet yourself you'll know what they
29:03mean to the owner the second that zip closes that's eye of relief it's always an overwhelming
29:10feeling to get the the dog back to its owner that's what we train to do to prevent those
29:17people attempting that self-rescue because that's when we have a an animal and a human casualty
29:25aaron oscar rescue we've got a job over on trasko at our facility it's a witness cardiac arrest
29:44the 70 year old male party patients on a vessel a 59 foot vessel at the moment
29:52it's in the harbour how it's going to be to get him off i'm not too sure i imagine that would
30:05just get him do you know if it's alongside the quayside or if it's an anchor or i'm not sure i'm
30:10afraid
30:11bearing in mind it's a cardiac arrest i think what i'll do is speak to 924 and get them going
30:30hello there new key it's the arch here can i task you please to tresco on the aisles of scilly
30:40we have a male who's had a witness cardiac arrest on board a vessel at the moment no paramedic crew
30:48unfortunately they had very scant information they don't know the vessel type and i don't have a name
30:53for it at the moment i'm afraid it's either going to be for access to winch him off his vessel or if
30:58they can get him off this vessel if you bring him back to the mainline
31:01we have got a grid reference to the vessel here for you of sierra victor
31:30eight eight eight six one five two
31:3418.41 headed 106
31:39we don't know whether they're on the boat or on the line

31:47i don't know if you have to get him off so i might have to get him
31:49you know how busy it is in here
31:51just like seven minutes to run
31:53i guess we're going to be putting you down on the jetty
32:04uh well you got all the people on the jetty at the moment
32:19the whole incident can really only boil down to him uh and whatever he's got to say
32:47he was fast asleep and really is an advergency finding out what he has to say
32:54there may be some mitigation in it but at the moment it doesn't look like he's going to have any
33:07we gave him a few more chances to respond to us
33:16we gave him a few more chances to respond to us
33:20eventually we decided that the best solution was to send him the interview questions by email
33:37if i'm really honest i wasn't expecting any response whatsoever
33:40i thought we were going to have to just take this to court but then
33:47he's responded to us
33:51he has admitted to being the only person in the wheelhouse at the time
33:57he has admitted to being asleep whilst looking after the vessel
34:01he's mitigated it by saying that he was aware of what he called a close quarter situation with
34:10another vessel but didn't realize he'd hit them however the positive thing is that he's responded
34:17to us and that means that we can now use that as part of our evidence when we go to court
34:31he should have a look out at all times that's part of collision regulations clearly that didn't happen
34:37he's put himself in this position and really there isn't much place for him to go
34:53fishing boat is it
35:07it's my turn
35:33it's my turn

36:03Hello, mate.
36:15Hello, mate.
36:16Okay, okay.
36:18Trying to make you feel a bit better.
36:22Nolan, is it?
36:23Yeah.
36:23Hello, Nolan.
36:25This chap went into cardiac arrest, collapsed, fell, hit his head.
36:29Okay.
36:29His wife is there and he hides us.
36:31There were three authority doctors and immediate CPR.
36:36When I arrived, one shot delivered.
36:46It was a good sign that he's making noises.
36:48I haven't had the chance to do a 12 lead.
37:02As a Winchman paramedic, you're always grateful for early intervention by competent individuals.
37:10It's certainly going to improve the chances of survival.
37:14We're going to get our 12 lead out.
37:16But at that point, the casualty is in a very delicate state.
37:21Until they're under full monitoring within a hospital environment, there's no real guarantee.
37:26There is a high chance that they might arrest again.
37:29He has a regular tachycardia of 120.
37:35What time is the witness to that?
37:36Must be over an hour now.
37:37We will have to put him in your device as we can.
37:47If we slide him out, we're going to just lift him straight into our Uber.
37:57Yeah, we'll put him at that end and we'll bring him straight on.
38:00Happy.
38:01Let's go.
38:02Right, guys, you ready?
38:03Ready.
38:04Let's go.
38:04Get us out of the way, please.
38:10Well done.
38:12Team on the ship to your pad, sir.
38:14He is, sir.
38:15Good man.
38:16Jack, we're going to go straight across to the aircraft.
38:19Right, one, two, lift.
38:22Up the ramp, feet first.
38:23Feet first.
38:34So, let's go.
38:47And I'm so glad.
38:52What?
38:54We decided to go on holiday to the Isles of Scilly.
39:12First day, we decided we would go to Tresco.
39:17We were just about to come in to the port.
39:21He was taking one great big breath, and then he collapsed.
39:29Being in the helicopter, all sorts of things were going through my mind.
39:35I felt totally hopeless and useless.
39:39Nolan was moving around quite a lot.
39:43I could see the tubes.
39:44It was very scary to think that he might, he might die.
40:00He always has done sketches when we've been on holiday.
40:04His drawings are very precious to me.
40:10They represent what Nolan is.
40:18Nolan and I have had a fantastic life together.
40:34And we shared so much.
40:44He was in ICU for four weeks.
40:49It was very difficult to think that I would be coming home without him.
40:59I found that quite unbearable.
41:02But he was so, um, strong.
41:09Anyway, I'll have, ooh, that's good.
41:16I don't remember anything until I was told I was in hospital.
41:20I think this was the first one that was on the train, wasn't it?
41:23Do you remember this?
41:25I do remember drawing some of it.
41:27Do you remember Jan?
41:28I remember she complained that I, she's got a big head.
41:31Yeah, that's right, but you wouldn't change it.
41:34No.
41:36When it's done, it's done.
41:38When it's done, it's done.
41:39I think I've recovered well.
41:41I, I felt strong within myself.
41:44The helicopter crew played an important part there.
41:48It kept me going until I could be plugged into the hospital, uh, amenities.
41:55Nolan is very upset that he doesn't remember the helicopter because he thinks I've done something that he, he would have liked to have done.
42:03So, the next time we go to the yards of Silly, I think we'll fly from the main line and go by helicopter.
42:09Oh my god.
42:10No.
42:10Oh my god.
42:10Hey!
42:20Hey!
42:21Hey!
42:22Hey!
42:23Hey!
42:25Hey!
42:27Hey!
42:28Oh, he didn't go.
42:40He was pretty reckless.
42:54He put not just himself and the vessel and his crew, but also other people at risk as well.
43:02The fact that he was found guilty and admitted it, for me that was a really good moment.
43:10I'm not a doctor.
43:12I'm not a doctor.
43:13You're in the hospital.
43:26I heard they were repatriated to Spain to their families in time for Christmas.
43:31Both casualties did have life-threatening injuries.
43:35This is one of these jobs that will stay in my mind forever.
43:39Yeah.
43:49We don't go looking for awards.
43:51But it's nice to receive them.
43:53Makes you feel good.
43:54I'm appreciated.
43:55There's been a collision.
44:07We've got two guys missing.
44:09We've got an officer at the watch who had drunk five pints of beer.
44:12Jesus.
44:13Casualty started vomiting and she's just passed out.
44:16Okay.
44:17And go down slowly.
44:18We've got two of those guys.
44:19We've got two of those guys coming for them.
44:21We've got five pints of beer.
44:22Are we?
44:23Do you want to leave?
44:24Do you want to leave?
44:25Yeah.
44:26Do you want to leave?
44:27Do you want to leave?
44:28Sure, what's left?
44:29Well, I'm coming for a while.
44:30Right.
44:31OK.
44:32I'm coming for a while.
44:33You're now coming for a while.
44:34Let's wait for a while.
44:35I don't know.
