00:00937. There you go, baby.
00:02Come here, baby.
00:05Come on, get on the ladder.
00:06Come on, get up there.
00:07There you go.
00:08Stop on the fort. There he is.
00:30Hi, folks. I'm Pat Malone, and this week on the Elite Fishing Series,
00:43the tour moves up the southeast coast of Texas to Port Arthur,
00:46known for producing big redfish and some of the best food on the Gulf Coast.
00:50It's the final qualifying stop on the Frog Talk solo tour,
00:53and anglers will once again target three redfish per day,
00:56measuring 20 to 28 inches in this episode of the Tidewater Boats Elite Fishing Series,
01:02presented by Yamaha Outboards.
01:06Mike, here we are, made it to beautiful Port Arthur, Texas,
01:09in the middle of our Texas swing now for the season.
01:12Let's talk about this area.
01:13We have the jetty system at the end, the Sabine jetties,
01:16and you've got Sabine Lake out here in, you know, for the most part, it's a fairly shallow lake.
01:21You know, you have anywhere from five to ten foot of water.
01:24Then on the northern end, you've got the intercoastal, as well as the river that dumps into Sabine.
01:30Sabine River dumps into Lake Sabine.
01:32And then you've got the marsh on the other side that's got pristine area to fish.
01:37So there's a variety.
01:38What would be the lure of choice, you think?
01:40If it's clean water, I know everybody's going to want to sight fish.
01:42It's July. It's, you know, it's Port Arthur.
01:45What are they going to be doing, depending on the conditions?
01:48Okay, let's say it's clear, like you said, back in the ponds or by the culverts or wherever you're going,
01:52or even in the lake and you're sight casting.
01:55Sixteenth to quarter ounce jig heads with soft plastics are going to be going to be the ticket,
02:01as well as spinner baits.
02:03Anything that you can present to the redfish, bring it across the nose of the mouth and let them attack it.
02:09The good thing about sight casting, you see your target.
02:11You know where he is.
02:12You make a precise cast about 45 degrees away from its mouth and bring that lure right across his mouth.
02:20Nine out of ten times, he's going to grab it.
02:22He's just going to pounce on it.
02:23Yeah, I tell you what, what do you call them? Heavy hippos?
02:26Hungry hippos.
02:27Hungry hippos.
02:28We cannot get any of that started until we get these guys in the water.
02:32And that's what we're going to do right now.
02:34Mike, you ready to launch them?
02:35I'm ready to launch them.
02:36I'm ready to go fishing myself.
02:37Let's go.
02:38Port Arthur, you're on the map and you're on the clock.
02:42While the stage is being set for day one's weigh in, anglers are on their way to what they hope will be a great start to this event in Port Arthur, Texas.
02:54I had a really great day pre-fishing yesterday.
02:57I found some really good fish.
03:01The bite has been on fire.
03:03There's a little fog right now.
03:06Looks like we may be in a fog delay.
03:09We'll get a green light to go.
03:11And we're going to put a lot of fish on the deck today.
03:17As soon as we get through this traffic, we'll get her in the water and see what day one holds.
03:22We've got about a 20-mile run to our first spot.
03:25Should be a pretty easy run.
03:26We don't have to get through any big water or anything.
03:29We'll get through this.
03:32Competitors on the Frog Tog solo tour fish one angler per boat.
03:37Time to get them.
03:38In a head-to-head competition without a teammate or a draw partner.
03:42Gary and Tony are in the water and often running to their first spots.
03:49But heavy fog is making it more difficult to locate or even think about searching for the big redfish Port Arthur is known for.
03:57After a delayed start and a slow trek to their fishing grounds, the fog is lifting and these two get their day off to a good start locating and landing their first scorable fish of the day.
04:18Yes.
04:20That's a good one.
04:22That's a good fish.
04:25Stay tuned. We'll be right back to Port Arthur, Texas after these messages.
04:30Elite Fishing Series Television is brought to you by Tidewater Boats, Yamaha Outboards, McLean Trailers, Frog Togs, Berkeley Fishing, and our Coastal Community Partners.
04:46Welcome back to the Elite Fishing Series in Port Arthur, Texas.
04:53It's been a challenging day one of this two-day event.
04:57But after a full day of fishing, Gary, Tony, and the other competitors head back to the Salt Club.
05:03That's the kind of fish that'll win you a tournament right there.
05:06On Pleasure Island, where the stage is set for day one's weigh-in.
05:15My name is Pat Malone, and this is the Elite Redfish Series Solo Tour right here in beautiful Port Arthur, Texas.
05:25These guys are allowed to weigh in three fish, 20 to 28 inches.
05:30So right now, put your hands together as Mike hits the stage.
05:32Here we go, Mr. Mike Furnett from Mariro, Louisiana.
05:37He's got two fish, two alive.
05:40Your total weight is going to be 1101, 1101.
05:44Here we go.
05:45And the first Brecknell Big Red of the day is going to come in at 778.
05:51778.
05:52That's not bad, almost eight pounds.
05:541279.
05:55Boy, that third fish would have been good, wouldn't it?
05:57It would have been.
05:58He was an eighth inch over.
05:59Oh, my goodness.
06:00Did you find that out here or out there?
06:02Over yonder, in the water.
06:04Yeah, that's smart.
06:05He was able to release him right away.
06:06Oh, yeah.
06:07Let's grab your two fish and hold them up for a picture.
06:09Now, is one of those in there a big old eight-pounder?
06:10You're in that Brecknell Big Red challenge, too.
06:13I am.
06:14Unfortunately, he's not quite that big.
06:15Y'all put your hands together.
06:16Show some love, Mr. Will Granberry.
06:21Here we go.
06:22Victoria, Texas is next.
06:23This is Arnold Oil Pro, Mr. Mark Robinson.
06:27Mike Frenette's got the Big Red at this point.
06:30Your three fish, three alive, are going to go 1684.
06:331684.
06:34You got an eight-pounder in there, Mark?
06:36I think I might have an eight-pounder.
06:38Mark, you need a 778 to knock your good friend Mike Frenette out.
06:42Here we go.
06:43Could be a $4,000 fish.
06:44He said, bye, Felicia.
06:46Here we go.
06:47The Big Red, 8.80, almost a nine-pounder.
06:52Fantastic.
06:53Here, Tony Vietor drove all the way from Winnie to make it this week.
06:58Our guys travel.
06:59Three fish, three alive, 2048, 2048.
07:04Your Big Red is going to weigh 776.
07:09When we started this morning, we had that weather over on the Louisiana side.
07:13So I decided to stay over here, work some shoreline down here.
07:17There's a lot of fish over there.
07:18They're just not very big.
07:20And I caught that smallest fish.
07:24Three or four that were like 18, 19 inches.
07:28And then the weather finally cleared.
07:30Let me get over there where I wanted to go fishing.
07:35Yes.
07:37That's a good one.
07:39That's a good fish.
07:40Good fish.
07:47Good fish.
07:49Fish number three here.
07:51The one we needed right here.
07:53That's a good fish.
07:55Put me up on the leaderboard.
07:56Put your hands together.
07:57Spotted Addiction Pro.
07:58Gary Marino.
07:59Three fish.
08:00Three alive for Gary Marino.
08:01He needs 2048.
08:02He's got 2048.
08:03Eight 100s behind the leader.
08:04Here's the Bracknell Big Red today.
08:05937.
08:06937.
08:07937.
08:08Stop on the fourth.
08:09There he is.
08:10There he is.
08:11Ladies and gentlemen.
08:12Put your hands together.
08:13Great job, Mark.
08:14You know, I wanted to say, you know, thanks to my family for really supporting me and really pushing me.
08:31You know, there was several times that I said, you know, I don't know if I got it because these guys are the best of the best.
08:37I can't hold myself to a level that these guys actually compete at.
08:42And, you know, they believed in me.
08:44They pushed me.
08:45Thank the good Lord above, you know, for guiding me in the direction that I need to go.
08:50That's a good fat fish.
08:52That's a really good fish.
08:55With just five anglers in the field able to catch and weigh scorable fish on day one, it appears this battle will come down to just two competitors.
09:07Tony Vietor with 20.48 pounds as the leader.
09:15GoPro start recording.
09:17The fog delays up enough.
09:20We're about to get ready and roll.
09:21It's game time.
09:22And in second, Gary Marino with 20.40 pounds, just eight one hundredths behind Tony after day one.
09:30But don't forget about Mark Robinson.
09:32He's still within striking distance, just three and a half pounds behind the leaders.
09:36There's fish right here, right here in front of us.
09:40Stay tuned.
09:41When we come back, we'll take a closer look and discover just a few of the reasons Port Arthur is a top vacation destination to millions of visitors each year.
09:50Welcome to the Cajun capital of Texas, Port Arthur.
09:59Located on the upper Gulf Coast in the heart of the Lone Star State.
10:03Arts, culture and history collide with famous personalities and colorful stories.
10:10Did you know legendary queen of rock and roll Janice Joplin was born and raised right here in Port Arthur?
10:17Beaches, lakes, rivers and state parks make Port Arthur the natural choice for everyone.
10:24If you love the outdoors, you've come to the right place.
10:28With acres of marshland and miles of natural beaches, Sea Rim State Park and McFadden National Wildlife Refuge, spotlight camping, fishing, beachcombing and just about anything you can dream up.
10:43Walk the birding trails at world famous Sabine Woods, positioned on two international migratory flyways and known for spring and fall migration.
10:52Go for a hike, glamp in a park cabin or hop aboard a yacht for sunset sail on Sabine Lake.
10:59Paddle or pedal your day away in one of our many marshes, bays and bayous.
11:05Cast a line in our waters, they're known for big redfish, flounder and trout.
11:10At the end of a sunny day spent in the outdoors, stop at any one of our restaurants and taste our local flavor.
11:17We're known for spicy Cajun seafood, two-stepping good times and a whole lot of southern hospitality.
11:24Sip on local brews, bourbon, whiskey or rum distilled right here in Port Arthur, where we keep the good times rolling.
11:32Head to visitportarthurtx.com to learn more.
11:36We just came out, got on the shoreline, still a little bit too foggy that I don't really want to run, safety reasons.
11:45There's fish here, I've seen several fish pushing off.
11:48There's a fish's tail just came out of the water, he's going down the shoreline right there.
11:52What I'm doing is more like hunting, it's not truly fishing, you're spotting your prey just like you do in an elevated blind.
12:07If I can just get one more decent fish out of this pipe, we'll be in the money.
12:13That's my boy.
12:18Get out of my little boat.
12:29Yeah, yes.
12:35Fish thinks he's in Louisiana, not Port Arthur.
12:38Weighs almost eight pounds.
12:44Oh!
12:46Broke off.
12:49And the fish is still there.
12:51Maybe I can get him to eat another bait.
13:03Just had a really good fish swim up, threw a gulp crab at him.
13:07He picked it up off the bottom, would set the hook, and broke off about ten feet of my line.
13:15If we wouldn't have lost those fish, we would have smoked everybody.
13:20Those were some big fish.
13:21All right, we'd like to welcome everybody out to the Salt Club right here on Pleasure Island.
13:28This is the Frog Talks Elite Redfish Tournament Series.
13:31And this week is the High Torque of Texas Hurricane event.
13:36Come on now, Sport Trail Trailers Pro, Beau Favre.
13:39Two fish, two alive, 11-11.
13:42Y'all put your hands together for them, reach in, pick them up, let's get a picture.
13:44Sat in one spot yesterday and caught six fish.
13:47I had 19 and a half pounds.
13:49The game wardens actually come pull me off the mud.
13:52He's like, man, you got any fish?
13:54I said, yeah, I got some decent ones.
13:56He said, you better haul butt.
13:57I said, dude, that's 415.
13:59I had to be back at 230, so.
14:01Fishing for Texas Ranger Whiskey, Mr. Will Granberry.
14:05Put them in there, brother. You got three of them?
14:07Read your scales and get you locked in at 1698.
14:10Going to leave you just a few pounds short.
14:11Grab your two best ones and let's show the folks.
14:16Y'all put your hands together, make him feel welcome.
14:18Here he comes, Mr. Mark Robinson.
14:20Here we go. He's got three fish, three alive.
14:23Read your scales and get you locked in at 19-20.
14:26There's your new leader. Come on, y'all.
14:31Yeah, I missed some fish.
14:33I had a lot of overs yesterday.
14:35I couldn't find them today.
14:36They all moved out on me, so I had to regroup and just go a whole different strategy today.
14:40It just didn't work out.
14:41I mean, I caught some nice fish today, but just not my eight-pounders that I was looking for.
14:46Two fish. One did not make it.
14:48We'll read your scale and get you locked in at 1248.
14:521248. Reach in and get them. Let's get a picture.
14:54Now you done made it tough because you know Tony Vietor, he's not going to give this thing to you.
15:02Oh, he ain't going to let up. I know Tony, you know, but that's all right.
15:05Tony's a great guy.
15:07Thank everybody. Thank my family.
15:09Thank all the fans. Thank you, Pat, for hosting such a great event.
15:11All right, buddy. Thank you so much, Gary.
15:13Thank you. Gary Marina from Baytown.
15:15Mr. Tony Vietor, Fishing First Thingery Restaurant Marina.
15:19Here we go.
15:212063. That's your winner right there.
15:23All right. So this is for everything.
15:25He's got to go over 937 because he's already got the win.
15:28Now this is for the Brecknell Big Red.
15:30You ready for this?
15:32Ladies and gentlemen, 965.
15:34There it is. A clean sweep. $10,000.
15:38Tony Vietor is your High Torque of Texas Hurricane champion.
15:43Got to where I wanted to fish this morning.
15:45I pulled in. Got everything set up.
15:48Happened to look over and I could see what looked like a fish moving.
15:51Threw out in front of it. Caught the big fish.
16:00Yes.
16:01Got here taken care of. Went about 20 yards. Caught the second biggest fish.
16:07Yeah. Stingray Marina. Jorgensen Marine. They keep my boat running.
16:11Sarge Custom Rods. Triple H Real Estate. Pipkin Ranch Outfitter.
16:16Your 2022 champion.
16:19Yeah, it's a lot of fun having the kayakers on board.
16:21They're a little bit different than us.
16:23They work different. They think different. They have to using the equipment they use.
16:27Some of them are really, really solid fishermen.
16:32Welcome back. It's time for the Hoodoo Sports Elite Kayak Tour in Port Arthur, Texas.
16:38We're going to move right in to the kayak division and we appreciate them so much.
16:43Put your hands together for the first team of the day.
16:45You got two fish, two alive. You need 684 to take the lead.
16:49This is how we do it.
16:51888. Get out there. Let's get a picture.
16:53Y'all put your hands together for them. Make some noise.
16:55One more time. Show your love, Port Arthur.
16:58The team fishing for Deadly Dudley.
17:00And this is Daniel Duong and Roland Brown.
17:02Here we go. They need 888.
17:04And ladies and gentlemen, not only do they have that, we have our first double digits, 1422.
17:09Come on now. Put your hands together.
17:11Wow. Beautiful fish.
17:13Coming up next, Jason Blackwell and Grant Justice.
17:16Come on up. Let's put your fish on the board.
17:18They need 1422.
17:20Read the scales. Get you locked in at 1465.
17:23There we go.
17:25Y'all put your hands together. Show your love. Good job.
17:271524. There you go, guys.
17:28Just locked in on 13 pounds even. Great job, guys.
17:341134. There we go. Y'all put your hands together for them. Good job, guys.
17:38Aaron's still wagging and Braden's still wagging.
17:41You've got the first Kayak Champions Trophy.
17:44And you've got two checks totaling $5,700 for the first place
17:50and for having the Brecknell Big Red of the tournament.
17:52Y'all put your hands together for Mr. Tony Vietor taking home $10,000.
18:13Threw a gulf when I couldn't get on a bite of a gold spoon,
18:15and occasionally I threw a popping cork.
18:17You know, being able to pull off a win in the Elite Redfish Series,
18:19especially the solo, fishing against the quality of anglers that fish,
18:23it's something I aspired to do.
18:26I didn't know that I could do it.
18:28It's a dream come true, if you would.
18:32Wow. Another great event is in the books,
18:34and another first-time winner.
18:36Tony Vietor wins in Port Arthur, Texas. Imagine that.
18:39I'm not too surprised on that, Pat.
18:41Tony's such a good guy, and he's a great fisherman,
18:44and he's got some local knowledge that probably helped him out in this tournament,
18:47but I don't think it's a real shocker to anybody.
18:51We had talked earlier about, you know, run-offs and that water coming out of those pipes,
18:55like in the intercoastal and different things like that.
18:58I think when you do find fish like that, I think the ticket is to spend, you know,
19:035, 10, 15 minutes at each one, and go back and keep doing it all day long.
19:09You know, and that's the thing, you know, when he told me, he said one of the things that he was keying on
19:13was the fact that he saw shrimp popping.
19:16When you see shrimp popping on top of the water anywhere,
19:20whether it's in front of the drains, in the marsh, in a ditch, whatever,
19:23something is forcing them to the top, and there's a good chance around here that it's redfish.
19:29From what it sounds like, I mean, these fish congregated, and they were aggressive, Mike.
19:34It wasn't something you had to wait all day to get a bite.
19:36No, and look, he won the tournament. It worked for him.
19:39For Mike Frenette, I'm Pat Malone. Thank you, anglers. Thank you, Port Arthur.
19:45It's been wonderful to share your community for a few short days.
19:48We'll see you when we get together again on the water on the Elite Fishing Series.
19:51We'll see you next time on the Elite Fishing Series.
20:21Thank you for tuning in and watching this week's episode.
