00:00Bonjour!
00:02They've dreamed of leaving it all behind.
00:05Look at this view, Brett.
00:06I can't believe we're here.
00:08Yay!
00:09Stunning.
00:10Now, the chance to make it real begins.
00:13Welcome to the best baby breakfast.
00:15We've got a guest arriving early.
00:17Lovely.
00:18Across three weeks, six couples will fight for the prize of a lifetime.
00:23Walking away with the keys to this extraordinary B&B in the heart of the French countryside.
00:32But only one couple will take them.
00:36Who wins this stunning prize lies in the hands of four expert judges from the world of hospitality.
00:44Eva Jonat, who's inspected hundreds of hotels for the prestigious AA.
00:50The competition has been so tough this week.
00:53Nicola Cross.
00:55Oh!
00:56Snogging swans!
00:57Elite inspector for the exclusive B&B guide Sore Days.
01:02Slightly chaotic, as they say up north.
01:06And award-winning B&B owners Andrew John and Brennan Street.
01:11Nobody's perfect.
01:12Yeah.
01:13Well, nobody's perfect.
01:17Whoa!
01:18Ready?
01:19Hurry up.
01:20Come on.
01:21Look at her.
01:22Stop asking me questions.
01:23I've buzzed it all up again.
01:24Well, you haven't buzzed anything up.
01:26I'm flagging.
01:27Oh, God.
01:28Do they have a problem?
01:33Not sure if hospitality's for them.
01:35The Dordogne, one of France's most cherished inland escapes.
01:46Its sun-drenched valleys and storybook villages draw more than three million visitors a year.
01:53Countless B&Bs vie for their custom, and soon it will be the battleground for three couples fighting to win their own.
02:00Touching down at Bergerac Airport with their eyes on the prize of a lifetime.
02:10Winning a B&B would be the most fabulous thing in our lives that would ever happen.
02:14We're hungry for it.
02:15We will throw in blood, sweat and tears for this.
02:18Yeah.
02:19There's no stopping us.
02:21We have grafted all our lives to get what we've got.
02:24This opportunity has come along, and we are absolutely going to smash it.
02:29We've had lots of ups and downs, and life has been a bit of a rollercoaster.
02:34I think it will be a fresh start.
02:36A fresh start.
02:37A real big challenge.
02:40Game face is on.
02:41The first chance to size up the competition.
02:46How much are you?
02:47Michelle and Steve.
02:48Hiya, Steve.
02:49Hi, Roy.
02:50How you doing?
02:51Where have you come from?
02:52Barnsley.
02:53What?
02:54Can you not tell with his posh accent?
02:56Oh, lovely.
02:57I'd say, oh, okay, but I have no idea where that is.
03:00It's a fabulous place.
03:02I'm sure it is.
03:05As well as being ambassadors for their hometown of Barnsley,
03:08Michelle runs a knitting business, and Steve is a builder.
03:13Me and Michelle's been together roughly 45 years,
03:17and we've been married 40 years this September.
03:20And it, um, she grew on me.
03:26What do you mean, grew on you?
03:27Like a flower!
03:30At the moment, our lives are quite separate.
03:32Steve goes off and does his job.
03:34I do my job.
03:35However, this is an absolute new venture.
03:38It gives us more time as a couple together,
03:42and that's what we're looking forward to.
03:44Yes, to grow even stronger.
03:46Oh, I like that.
03:50I'm Rob.
03:52Hi, Rob.
03:53I'm Jackie, everybody.
03:54Hi.
03:55So what do you do, then?
03:56Sports scientists.
03:57What's that?
03:58So I work with many athletes on their strength and conditioning,
04:01nutrition.
04:02Oh, I think I could do it one-to-one.
04:08Jackie and Rob from South East London are looking for a new direction.
04:12It feels like the right time.
04:14It's time to put us first now.
04:16You know, we've spent the last 30 years putting the kids first.
04:19Now it's time for us.
04:22Four years ago, I had a complete heart block,
04:24and I was fitted with an emergency pacemaker.
04:27So it was totally out of the blue,
04:29and it totally changed our whole world upside down.
04:32It makes you realise how fragile life is,
04:35and how quickly things can change overnight.
04:37Now just seems the right time to actually go and do something.
04:41An adventure.
04:42Yeah, I like that.
04:43The next chapter of our life.
04:44The next chapter of our life.
04:45Yeah.
04:46Of our middle-aged life.
04:47Yeah.
04:48I'm Roy.
04:49Roy.
04:50Nicola.
04:51Nicola.
04:52What do you do?
04:53What's your job?
04:54I'm a chef.
04:55You're the competition, are you?
04:56Don't be afraid.
04:57Don't wash your feet.
04:58Be terrified.
05:03Originally from Northern Ireland,
05:05Nicola and Roy currently live in Paynton in Devon.
05:09I've been a pastry chef probably 30-odd years.
05:12I work in a little coffee shop in Brixham.
05:15I work in a sheltered housing scheme for over 55s.
05:20I really enjoy my job, but I'd like a change,
05:23I'd like to move on and do something completely different.
05:26So it's time to do what we've always wanted,
05:29run a B&B.
05:31We're not looking for an easier life,
05:32because running a business is not an easier life at all.
05:35We just love the idea of having the challenge
05:37and doing it ourselves and not for other people.
05:40Yeah.
05:41And we will eat, sleep and drink this.
05:45Who are we waiting for? Does anybody know?
05:47No.
05:48I don't know.
05:49There are just two more people to board the coach,
05:51as the hosts are about to meet their first judges.
05:57We have an award-winning bed and breakfast in Europe
06:00that's been operating for seven years.
06:02Top 1% of all boutique hotels in the world.
06:05The hospitality trade is no stranger to us.
06:11Welcome to the hosts and we will be your judges.
06:14I can't express enough how much of an opportunity this is.
06:20We had to work 15 solid years running the businesses that we did
06:26to raise the funds to be able to do what they could win.
06:29Yeah.
06:30It's life-changing for one lucky couple.
06:33We will be judging you, but we'll be guiding you along,
06:37giving you hints, setting you challenges,
06:39but there are no problems, only solutions.
06:42Absolutely.
06:43Absolutely.
06:44And we're off.
06:45The hosts are en route to their new homes and businesses for the week.
06:56Each couple would take charge of a rental property in the French countryside,
07:00all within 30 minutes of each other.
07:03Each comes with four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a breakfast dining area,
07:09and a fully equipped kitchen.
07:12But there's a twist.
07:14Every property has been stripped of bed linen and amenities.
07:18It's up to the hosts to add the finishing touches
07:21to turn them into the perfect B&B.
07:24Over the week, they'll welcome guests
07:26and be judged on their presentation, food, cleanliness,
07:30and, above all, their hosting skills.
07:34What makes you guys think you're different to anybody else?
07:39Oh, we're certainly different.
07:42Our graft is absolutely there, we know that.
07:44Sure.
07:45But do you know what?
07:46For us, it's me and Steve.
07:49Steve's...
07:50Well, he's a builder, but he's also...
07:52I do a little bit of magic.
07:54He does a lot of magic.
07:55Oh, wow. Loads of magic.
07:57So you can keep them entertained as well.
07:59Honestly, it'd just blow you away.
08:01What do you bring to this competition?
08:03We're very interested, obviously, in nutrition.
08:06We're both qualified in different kinds of massage,
08:10which we would like to offer, and to offer retreats.
08:13What a lovely place to do it in.
08:16We know exactly how important food is to the bed and breakfast.
08:20What would your slightly different take on a breakfast be?
08:24We have a few things up our sleeves that we want to try out.
08:27So do you want to tell us what that is right now?
08:30No, not really.
08:32What, too much competition?
08:33Too much competition, yeah.
08:34Wise competitors.
08:36The hosts have made their first impressions, but soon they'll be under the scrutiny of all the judges.
08:47Only they have the power to decide whose life will be changed forever.
08:51We're looking for owners who are confident and they're people lovers.
08:58They've got to be people lovers.
09:01I think people underestimate how much work goes into it.
09:04It's not just about opening your door to some stranger and just let them sleep in the bed.
09:08It's about making a warm and, you know, inviting environment.
09:13It's the owners who are the most important part of your stay.
09:18It's going to be one of the toughest weeks of their lives.
09:21There will be tears, there will be tantrums, but it is going to be so worth it.
09:29As night falls, the hosts finally arrive at their B&Bs.
09:34Amazing.
09:36Oh, look at that.
09:37Who would have thought that was down that dark path?
09:40That's so good.
09:43Oh, my God.
09:46Oh, wow, Steve, look at this.
09:50It's all right, kitchen.
09:53It's their first chance to plan how they'll put their vision in place.
09:58Take a few.
10:00Oh, I love it.
10:01What?
10:02What's a cooker like?
10:03Yeah, what's a cooker like?
10:04It's a little chef thing, isn't it?
10:06It's a cooker.
10:10Oh, this is lovely.
10:12This is absolutely amazing.
10:14Beautiful.
10:16This is nice.
10:17Yeah.
10:18Oh, Steve.
10:19We made this look special.
10:22Tonight, the only decision is to choose which room will be theirs and which will be for their guests.
10:28It's about the guests.
10:30Yes, it is.
10:31I think I know which bedroom is going to be for us.
10:35Yeah, I know.
10:36It's them two singles.
10:37Absolutely.
10:38And I can come and have a cuddle, can't I?
10:41No, I'm all right.
10:43I'm all right.
10:44Oh, it's been too long.
10:46This might have to be our room.
10:48Purely for the fact that it gives the guests privacy as well.
10:52We definitely need to give the guests these good rooms and we'll just take the small ones.
10:56Yeah.
10:57But the hosts need their rest.
11:00Tomorrow, the real work begins.
11:02The race is on to prove who deserves this life-changing prize.
11:09The reality is we have got a chance to win a B&B that will change our lives.
11:16Here's to me and you, kiddo.
11:18Bonne chance.
11:19Good luck.
11:21Yeah, yeah.
11:23A wee bit nervous.
11:24Are you?
11:25It's not something we've done before.
11:26Sure.
11:27But we're here, Daphne, to win.
11:29This is where it all begins.
11:42Early morning in the beautiful French countryside and three couples are waking to the challenge of their lives.
11:50Look at this.
11:51Oh, look at it, Steve.
11:52Look at this.
11:54We've got our own swimming pool.
11:57Oh, this is amazing, isn't it?
11:59Yeah.
12:00Today, they will become B&B hosts, competing to make their dream a reality and win the prize of a lifetime.
12:07I slept like a baby.
12:08Me too.
12:09What about you?
12:10Well, I didn't get to bed at half twelve.
12:12That's because you're obsessed around the kitchen, checking everything.
12:14I know, I know.
12:15But there is a lot at stake.
12:16Yeah, I know.
12:17Like, when the B&B in France, when does that ever come around?
12:20I had some very strange dreams.
12:21Did you?
12:22Yeah.
12:23It was mainly about beans.
12:24What, as in like baked beans?
12:25Baked beans.
12:26Probably some hidden meaning in that dream.
12:27Probably.
12:28Over the next five days, the hosts will face a series of challenges set by the judges.
12:45Each one inspired by the real demands of running a B&B.
12:51At the end of the week, only two pairs of hosts will make it through to finals week
12:56and stay in the running to win the keys to their very own guest house in France.
13:04It's 9am sharp, and the first challenge begins.
13:10Oh.
13:11What's that?
13:12It's on the set of doors.
13:13There you go.
13:14Big reveal.
13:17Ooh, look.
13:19The golden envelope.
13:21Bring it in, bring it in.
13:22Back, back.
13:23We've got an envelope.
13:24We've got an envelope.
13:25Oh, God.
13:28Let's go.
13:29Let's go.
13:30Terrified.
13:34Oh, right.
13:35Tonight, you will be hosting one couple for one night stay in one room with breakfast tomorrow morning.
13:45You have six hours to furnish the bedrooms and bathrooms of your B&B.
13:48Please note towels are supplied. Everything else you need to source locally.
13:53A judge will arrive to inspect your first B&B room at 3pm.
13:57After this point, you will not be allowed to make changes to your B&B.
14:01Guests will arrive between half three and half four.
14:05Challenge.
14:08Each couple has a budget of £1,000.
14:12Challenge on.
14:13This is right out of your alley, this bit.
14:14It is.
14:16Duvets, pillows and towels are provided.
14:19The rest is up to the hosts.
14:21It would obviously be nice to put some toiletries in here.
14:24Like hand washes and things like that.
14:26Yeah.
14:27There's no waste bin in here to put any tissues or make-up remover pads.
14:31Bins.
14:32We need to get some bins.
14:34But they need to plan carefully.
14:36The budget needs to stretch to food and provisions for the rest of the week.
14:42Toad out rolls.
14:43Oh, yeah, we need toad out.
14:44Three double duvet covers.
14:47Uh-huh.
14:48Toothpaste, shaving foam, razors, deodorant.
14:52Razor deodorant.
14:53Yeah, yeah.
14:54Well, many times you go away and you forget.
14:57I'm going to leave my suitcase full of clothes as well.
14:59And a pile of money, by the way.
15:00And a pile of money, yeah.
15:01They're coming at home.
15:02They should know what they bring.
15:03The hosts have also been allowed to bring a small box of items from home
15:09to help them reflect their own personalities.
15:13I'm not sure which room we'll put this in.
15:16No, I'm not.
15:17But I love it.
15:18Look at that, Steve.
15:20Yep.
15:21Pink chicken.
15:24You've know a taste, haven't you?
15:26Know a taste.
15:28The competition is on and with a life-changing prize to play for.
15:32We've got work to do.
15:33This guy.
15:34The hosts are ready to hit the shops.
15:37We've really got to crack on now.
15:38Do you know where we're going?
15:39Yep.
15:42Is there anything coming there now?
15:43Nope.
15:44Oh, I don't know what direction I'm looking in.
15:45You're going that way.
15:46You're looking at that way.
15:47We're going that way.
15:48I know.
15:49Oh, I've got rocks at that.
15:56In six hours, the judges will arrive to inspect their newly furnished rooms.
16:03And they'll be looking to see which hosts have gone the extra mile.
16:08I'll be looking at whether they've thought about any little treats.
16:11Anything that's above and beyond generous.
16:15I think guests will be expecting to see some elements of personalization in the room,
16:19whether it's a little homemade biscuit on arrival, a folded towel.
16:23And then the soft furnishings, they need to add something soft, a sense of luxury and fitting, I think, with the style of the house.
16:33It's about that lotion and sequa that makes the property unique.
16:35No strangers to house renovation, Jackie and Rob are the first to complete their shop.
16:44Can you see I really enjoyed myself?
16:46I did.
16:47I'm in my element.
16:48You are.
16:49Do you know what?
16:50I can see that.
16:51Do you know what?
16:52As well, just the interior stuff out here is so nice.
16:55Yeah.
16:56That'll give us a bit of edge, I think.
16:57I hope so.
17:00Wow.
17:02Now that were traumatic.
17:04I can manage trolleys.
17:05Oh, sorry.
17:07Michelle and Steve are working hard to stay within budget.
17:11It was a lot of money, that.
17:13Gosh.
17:14I mean, I know you've got to get a bit of quality.
17:15No, it's not.
17:16We've got quality.
17:17We've got lovely things.
17:18Yes, we have, Steve.
17:19You're right.
17:20Lovely things.
17:21Yeah, you're right.
17:22People will see that it's quality stuff.
17:23Yeah, yeah.
17:24That budget's got to last us the week.
17:25Do you know what I mean?
17:27Nicola and Roy's shopping trip has also added up.
17:31It's been like 200 quid in bedding.
17:33So?
17:34Yeah, that's all.
17:35I know, but you don't want cheap.
17:36Buy cheap, pay twice.
17:38See, if you'd have been there on your own,
17:39you'd have bought the cheapest.
17:40I wouldn't have.
17:41You'd have lifted the bed sheet at 5.99.
17:43No.
17:44And the bed sheet at 18.99.
17:45You'd have went, no, the 5.99.
17:47No, we bought cotton.
17:49Because Nicola was there.
17:50Mmm.
17:54The hosts now need to prepare their bedroom and bathroom to perfection
17:58and be ready to welcome the judges at 3 p.m. on the dot.
18:03Oh!
18:04Jesus.
18:06I don't think Jeff Capes could lift that.
18:10Well, Roy's a better cook than I am.
18:13And I'm a better cleaner than he is.
18:15So, it just...
18:16It's not...
18:17I don't even know what's talked about.
18:18We just fall into these rules.
18:20I'm making homemade shortbreads for the guests to arrive,
18:23so as if we're behind,
18:25it'll pass a wee bit of time.
18:27We'll not be behind.
18:28There's no...
18:29There's no rule for error here.
18:30There's no room.
18:34Do you want me to move, love?
18:35Yes, please.
18:37Nicola, stop getting stressed, love.
18:39I'm not getting stressed.
18:40Everything's fine.
18:43For all our hosts,
18:44quickly finding a balance could be the key
18:46to an early edge in the competition.
18:48Nice and clean.
18:53When you go the extra mile for people,
18:55they see it and appreciate it.
18:58Nicola?
18:59Oh, for God's sake, Roy, what?
19:01Nicola?
19:02Yes, darling?
19:03We've only an hour.
19:04Do you need any hand up there?
19:05An hour?
19:06Yeah.
19:12You work your magic on a bedroom.
19:13I'll go downstairs, get tidied up in the kitchen.
19:16No problem.
19:17Let's do it.
19:19Rooms will be assessed on both style and function,
19:22with judges paying close attention to the small details
19:25that make a stay feel effortless.
19:28But there's one major detail Jackie and Rob have overlooked.
19:32Slight issue.
19:33Hold on.
19:34I can't find any sheets for the bedroom upstairs.
19:39Have you looked in the cupboards?
19:40I have looked in the cupboards.
19:41All the cupboards?
19:42Yeah.
19:43There's none at all.
19:45Their inventory clearly states bed linen is not included.
19:49I presumed, and I thought all the bedding was out there.
19:55So the only bedding that we have is the bedding that we slept on last night.
19:59All right.
20:00We don't have time to wash and dry it.
20:02No.
20:03Okay.
20:04The solution.
20:05We don't have time to go to the shops.
20:06All right.
20:07So we have a major issue here, don't we?
20:09We do.
20:10I've known Michelle 45 years, and I've never seen her in this situation.
20:22Because I want to win it.
20:23Stress above her, that girl.
20:25I want to win it, and this is important.
20:30I'll go get the shower gels and everything.
20:32You'll start doing the bed.
20:33Oh.
20:34Yeah?
20:35Should this be ironed?
20:36I think it probably should.
20:37I've never seen you iron a she.
20:39Yeah, but we have sheets that you don't need to iron in Barnsley.
20:46Look at that.
20:47It's so natural.
20:48Does it really matter?
20:50It's about it looking nice.
20:51Nobody's seen us do it, have they?
20:54The judges will be looking to see whether the host's personalities
20:58are reflected in the rooms.
21:00These are from home, and this is the sort of person I am.
21:04I like a bit of glitz.
21:05Can you see how it's changed the look as well of the room?
21:08It's just nice, isn't it?
21:10Amazing.
21:11You didn't even look.
21:12I did, I did.
21:13No, you didn't.
21:14I'm just going to try and make some decorative towels.
21:17It's the first impressions of what they'll see, and they'll think,
21:22oh, that's quite nice, you've made an effort.
21:28The judges are on their way.
21:31Do you think these things are all great when you...
21:33I know.
21:34And then when you get here...
21:35That's sad.
21:36So I've had me orders to make a love heart.
21:38There you go.
21:39Now, doesn't that look quite pretty?
21:42We've misread the cards, all right?
21:44In our heist.
21:45We're in it as a team.
21:46We just hold our hands up to it, you know?
21:48For me, the most important person is our guest.
21:50I'll shoot out, get the bed in, we'll get the bed made,
21:53they'll have a great time, this'll be the lesson.
21:55I'll do that.
21:56OK.
21:57Right?
21:58Yeah?
22:03Does that look all right?
22:04Yeah, that's fine.
22:05Is it an eel or a swan?
22:07It's supposed to be a swan.
22:10I'll put the boy here.
22:12Aw, up his eye in the cattery.
22:19Is it OK?
22:20Yes, it's lovely.
22:21No!
22:22Why would you do that?
22:25It's time for the judge's verdict.
22:29Hosts need to be prepared for the eventuality
22:31that something will go wrong.
22:33Making a mistake isn't the problem,
22:36it's how they deal with it.
22:38It's a boiling pot when you know you have guests coming.
22:40You want everything to be perfect.
22:41But sometimes it's not perfect.
22:56In the Dordogne, the hosts have done all they can to prepare their guest rooms.
23:01But their time is up.
23:03Here we go.
23:05Ahead of tonight's guests, the judges have arrived for their first inspection.
23:10Hello!
23:11Hello!
23:12Bonjour!
23:13Bonjour!
23:14You won't be smiling like that in a minute.
23:16Hello!
23:17Hello!
23:18Hello!
23:19How do you do?
23:20Hello!
23:21My name is Steve.
23:22Steve and I'm Michelle.
23:23Hello!
23:24Are you all right?
23:25Hello!
23:26Hello!
23:27Hello, thank you.
23:28And your name is?
23:29It's Eva.
23:30Eva.
23:31I'm Roy.
23:32Nice to meet you.
23:33Hello, I'm Nicola.
23:34Nice to meet you.
23:35Welcome!
23:36Thank you very much.
23:37Can I come in and see what you've done?
23:43Giving her verdict on Michelle and Steve's efforts is Nicola.
23:46Look at this.
23:47It's lovely.
23:48Just be careful on these steps.
23:50Yeah, I'll catch you if you fall.
23:53Who, with more than 25 years' experience inspecting luxury B&Bs,
23:58is looking for a touch of class.
24:00Right, here we go.
24:02Some people are incredibly generous about what they leave in bedrooms.
24:06Fresh flowers, absolutely lovely in a bedroom, makes a huge difference.
24:12Are you excited?
24:13Yes!
24:16Oh, my goodness!
24:18We've got a swan and a heart.
24:23That's Steve's domain.
24:25He does like the knick-knacking, the titivating and that.
24:28Do you know what I mean?
24:29If that's a word, titivating.
24:30It is a word.
24:32Can I have a look at the bathroom?
24:34Absolutely.
24:35And you've done a veal and a lavatory paper.
24:37It is!
24:39That's Steve's finishing touches.
24:41And I see you've got wine.
24:43Is that local wine?
24:45Yeah.
24:46Well, local.
24:47It's the supermarket.
24:48Local.
24:49OK, so I've just noticed it's not a screw top.
24:52Oh.
24:53So how are they going to get into it?
24:54That's a good point.
24:56Very good.
24:59And the flowers?
25:00Yes, I brought them from home.
25:02You didn't think you could just pick some wild ones from the garden?
25:05We didn't know if there'd be flowers or anything.
25:07Right, right.
25:08You didn't know the garden was there.
25:09We had to dress it.
25:10Just to give it a bit of a...
25:12Yes.
25:13Because I'm a bit glitzy, innit?
25:14Just a bit.
25:15You know what?
25:16Do you know what I mean?
25:17It definitely reflects your personality.
25:22Nicola and Roy have been paired with hotel inspector Ava.
25:26This is our lounge area.
25:27Beautiful.
25:28She sets the standard for B&Bs across the UK, and only perfection is acceptable.
25:35The thing I will be looking for is some personality and some thoughts as well,
25:39making sure they've thought about the little details.
25:41We've made these lovely shorebreads for our guests.
25:44Oh, wonderful.
25:45Are they homemade, you said?
25:46They're homemade.
25:47Oh, beautiful.
25:48They were only made about literally an hour ago.
25:49As fresh as can be.
25:50Absolutely.
25:51Have they thought about a bin for the bathroom?
25:56Have they thought about putting maybe a coaster on the desk where needed?
26:00It's all those little attention to details and little extras
26:03that would make the guests stay comfortable.
26:09This is your room.
26:10Stick a wee light on.
26:11There you go.
26:13Very good.
26:14So who was in charge of the cleaning of the room today?
26:17Me.
26:18I like this thing.
26:19Well, if I had done it, Eva, Nicola would have done it again.
26:21We like to see some teamwork here, yes.
26:24Is there any aspects in this bedroom which you've introduced to reflect your personality
26:29and your identity?
26:30We've stayed at places where there's lots of ornaments and tut.
26:33We like to keep as minimal as possible.
26:36Yeah.
26:37Well, I suppose the little touch here is your choice of print for the bed sheets then.
26:41We didn't want anything too bold or anything.
26:43Yeah, just nice cotton.
26:44Keep cool.
26:45Yeah.
26:46Excellent choice.
26:47We'll be checking the bathroom next if that's all right.
26:49All right.
26:50No strangers to the challenges of a guest house, Andrew and Brennan are reviewing Jackie
27:02and Rob's preparation.
27:04We've had a little bit of a faux pas in our haste.
27:09I thought I had read somewhere all bedding would be provided, but on the challenge cards
27:15it says...
27:16You have to buy it.
27:17...we have to buy the bedding.
27:19It's one of those things.
27:20So we've had to take a deep breath.
27:21Yeah.
27:22Take a deep breath.
27:23We're all fallible.
27:24Yes.
27:25We are.
27:27My top tip would be plan ahead.
27:31Always be ahead of the game.
27:33Have a solution lined up for something that could go wrong.
27:40In here is the master bedroom.
27:44It's my fault as much as yours.
27:45We've both read the cards and both misread it.
27:49Tell us in the room what you've brought.
27:51We've brought from home the cushion on the chair and the vase and the flowers.
27:55And I'm guessing that's the en suite.
27:57That's the en suite?
27:58This is the en suite, yes.
28:01A nice contemporary...
28:03The items that are in here we have bought today.
28:06Excellent.
28:07We purchased the bin, we purchased the toilet roll holder, the diffuser.
28:12Very good.
28:13So we thought it was just a nice touch.
28:16Mind your heads.
28:17With the tour over, the scrutiny begins.
28:25We'll leave you to it now.
28:26Thank you very much.
28:29And no stone is left unturned.
28:31I see that they've thought about the toilet brush here.
28:34However, there's no bin in the bathroom, which will be something that guests will pick up on.
28:39A little bit of dust on the rain shower head too.
28:42With a life-changing prize up for grabs, the judges are pulling no punches.
28:47What I did like was she has done the stuff that reflects her.
28:53And that's sort of authentic.
28:55I could probably do without the swan.
28:58The swan that didn't really look like a swan.
29:00Well, it's not up my street, but, you know, they were having fun.
29:06There was a little bit of taradiddle, if you call it that.
29:10Bless Jack and Rob. They didn't read the rules.
29:16Their enthusiasm is what's going to drive them forward because they did drop the ball pretty, pretty, pretty badly.
29:23Nobody's perfect.
29:24Yeah.
29:25Well, nobody's perfect.
29:27Do you know what? We've done his best. That's all we can say now.
29:33Yeah.
29:34I feel I've messed up all right now.
29:36It's all right.
29:37Yeah, but there's no bin in the bathroom.
29:39I tell you.
29:40What the heck?
29:41Honesty is the best policy.
29:42Yeah.
29:43If we don't have a resolution before your guests arrive, then let's be honest with them and let's find a way forward.
29:49Yeah, absolutely.
29:51Now the competition is about to heat up as the hosts face their biggest test so far.
30:00Because the next knock on the door will be their very first guests.
30:04And if that's not enough pressure, they won't be alone.
30:09So we will be following you with your guests in tow, but we are flies on the wall.
30:15Okay.
30:16You cannot refer to us. You cannot defer to us.
30:18No, it's all good.
30:19I know you.
30:20I know you.
30:22The initial welcome is very, very important.
30:25I think within that first two minutes, the guests have kind of made up their mind whether they're going to like it or not.
30:31And I can honestly say, even to this day, we both still jump when the door knocks, even though we know they're coming.
30:39Ooh!
30:40Ooh!
30:42Ooh!
30:44Hello!
30:46Welcome!
30:47Yes, welcome.
30:48Welcome to our beautiful place.
30:49Beautiful!
30:50Isn't it amazing?
30:51You are very lucky, aren't you really?
30:54Right, would you like to come in?
30:56In this challenge, the spotlight is on which hosts will go the extra mile.
31:02So, look at this.
31:03When the sun is shining, you've got the grapevines there and the pool.
31:10Look at that beautiful pool.
31:12Michelle and Steve are hosting Australian holidaymakers Sam and Alex.
31:18Wait till you see your little bit.
31:20Are you excited?
31:21I'm excited for you.
31:26Right, come on then.
31:30Beautiful.
31:32Look at the view.
31:33So, you've got some water, you've got some wine, you've got some little cookies.
31:38Beautiful.
31:39This is Steve's artwork.
31:41Have you spent some time on a cruise ship?
31:45Yes.
31:45Yes.
31:48Is the wine local?
31:49It is, yes.
31:50Oh, wow.
31:51So, you can have a look behind you.
31:54Go and have a look in there.
31:56That's your shower room.
31:58Yeah.
31:58Oh, you guys have gone all out.
32:00This is beautiful.
32:01Oh, thank you.
32:02And if there's anything, you need anything, just come to the house.
32:07The back door section is always open.
32:09Steve might even do you a little bit of magic.
32:14Oh, really?
32:14Nicola and Roy are welcoming guests, Alison and Janine.
32:23Hello.
32:23Hello.
32:24How are you?
32:25How are you?
32:25How are you?
32:26Do you want to come through into the house?
32:27How are you going to do these kids?
32:28They've got big muscles.
32:30Yeah.
32:30Good job.
32:31You need them.
32:31My bad.
32:33How did you start to travel today?
32:35Well, just spent the last week in Italy.
32:37Oh, lovely.
32:38So a little bit.
32:40You'll sleep well tonight.
32:41You will.
32:42So would you like to see your room?
32:43Absolutely.
32:44Okay, let's go.
32:46Did you bring your family?
32:49That's my mum in there.
32:50Now, here's your room.
32:58What we'll do is we'll bring your bags in, let you just get settled.
33:01Yep.
33:01Come down to us any time.
33:02Yep.
33:03There's freshly made shortbreads, tea, coffee.
33:06That sounds good.
33:07Yeah.
33:07We'll let you settle in there.
33:08That's a good time spread for two big beds, that as well, isn't it?
33:10It's not bad, that.
33:11Yeah.
33:16Joe and Karen have an overnight stay with Jackie and Rob.
33:19If you just mind your heads as you go up, no, after you.
33:25Andrew and Brennan have a close eye on how the hosts handle a stressful situation.
33:32One little thing I'm going to do is...
33:35We've just had a little bit of a faux pas today.
33:37Bit of drama with the bed sheets.
33:39The linen weren't clean properly, so I'm going to now go out and buy some.
33:43Okay.
33:43While I'm out, would you care for a drink or anything?
33:47A cup of tea.
33:48A cup of tea?
33:48I don't drink tea or coffee.
33:50No problem at all.
33:51What do you like to drink?
33:53What do you like to drink?
33:53Herbie.
33:55Herbie, please.
33:56Anything in particular?
33:57A mint tea?
33:57No, it doesn't matter.
33:58Just that, yeah.
33:59A mint tea?
34:00Anything long as it's...
34:01No, no, tea, tea.
34:02Yeah, that's right.
34:03No problem at all.
34:03No problem at all.
34:04We've got mint tea.
34:05That's fantastic.
34:06And we've got green tea.
34:07And we've got berry tea.
34:09Mint?
34:09Mint we're fine.
34:11Okay, brilliant.
34:11A hot water with lemon, if you like, as well.
34:15Or choices.
34:16There's lots of choices.
34:17I'm getting a headache now.
34:18Yeah, yeah, that's it, that's it.
34:19I mean, if you want to, as I say, you're welcome to just settle yourself in real quickly.
34:24Thank you very much.
34:24Thank you very much.
34:26Thanks for the welcome.
34:27Thanks for the welcome.
34:27Yes, all right.
34:30The check-in is complete.
34:34See you later.
34:36And with the hosts out of earshot...
34:38Gosh.
34:40..the real feedback begins.
34:43What do you think of the bars?
34:44It's definitely got flair.
34:46Day one of the competition and three couples are going all out to prove they have what it
35:06takes to win their own B&B.
35:10Would you mind if I had a Yorkshire tea?
35:11No, no.
35:12There's my bag of Yorkshire tea.
35:14I love your stuff.
35:15And I promise.
35:15I love it.
35:16I promise it is just tea.
35:18First guests through the door and the pressure is on.
35:23Right.
35:23100% cotton.
35:24I think it's really important to have good bedding.
35:26Yeah, it's very important.
35:27It's really important.
35:28So, yeah.
35:29Yeah, they've done a good job there.
35:30Nicola and Roy's guests, Alison and Janine, are frequent travellers who don't leave comfort
35:36to chance.
35:38There it is.
35:39All size copper.
35:41Two metres long.
35:42Don't open it yet.
35:43You might be very comfortable.
35:44You never know.
35:45We always travel with our own pillow.
35:48There's probably nothing wrong with their pillows, but I like my own bodily fluids on my pillow
35:53and no one else's.
35:54Look under a hotel pillow.
35:55They're often quite stained.
35:57Yeah.
35:57But they do look lovely and clean.
36:00Oh, I think everything went well.
36:01She's probably a mattress topper.
36:03I mean, it does that everywhere.
36:04Okay.
36:05It does that everywhere.
36:06Do you know something?
36:07I take my hat off to people like that.
36:09You know, I wouldn't have the space in my suitcase.
36:10I wouldn't have the space in my suitcase.
36:14That's good for one.
36:16They actually seem like they're good fun, actually.
36:18Yeah.
36:19And they seem quite competent.
36:20Yeah.
36:21I'll look forward to having a drink with them later, I think.
36:22Yeah.
36:23And a bit of shortbread.
36:30Oh, it's quite a space to shower, Karen.
36:33Yeah, it's lovely.
36:34Yeah, yeah.
36:35Good standing room in there.
36:36Jackie and Rob are trying to resolve their first problem as hosts,
36:42after an oversight has left their guests, Joe and Karen, without bed linen.
36:47Guys, can I just ask, what's your plan now with regards to the guests?
36:52We'll take the drinks up to them, and then, as I said, then I can...
36:55No, I don't think we...
36:56Are we going to take the drinks to their rooms?
36:57We're just going to leave it downstairs.
36:59So you need to move those guests as quickly as possible?
37:03Yes.
37:03Yeah.
37:03So you can get in and dress it.
37:06If you go out...
37:08Oh, I thought you said you were going out.
37:10No, if you go out.
37:15Come in, come in.
37:15Hello, Karen, Joe.
37:16Just to let you know, your drinks are downstairs in the lounge for you
37:19when you'd like to come down.
37:20Thanks very much.
37:21Just my drink when you come down the stairs.
37:26Oh, this is nice.
37:28Take a seat.
37:29Have a moment to refresh.
37:31Yes, yes.
37:32And then I'll be back in in a moment.
37:34Enjoy.
37:35Yeah, thank you.
37:35And then, once you've had your drinks, then I can show you around if you like.
37:40Please, please.
37:41We'd love to see it, yeah.
37:42No problem at all.
37:43Yeah.
37:43If there's anything else you'd like, just let me know.
37:45Cheers.
37:46Cheers.
37:46Pretty clean.
37:53The shower's always a big thing for me.
37:55I hate the dirty shower.
37:56I hate the dirty shower, but it looks really good.
37:59As a pilot, Alex has travelled the world, and along with his partner, Sam, is used to premium stays.
38:05They seem like lovely hosts.
38:09I probably would have met with a welcome drink or something, but they seem like really lovely, welcoming people.
38:16For sure.
38:17Maybe tried a little bit too hard.
38:19I've been wanting to try some of the local wine, but I don't really know what they make here.
38:24No, we might have to ask.
38:25Oh, that's a rosé, so that would normally be chilled, wouldn't it?
38:29Yeah.
38:29The rosé you'd chill.
38:31But, no, I'd like to try that.
38:33Yeah.
38:33But that's Bergerac, so that's not far away.
38:36She did ask me a question about the wine.
38:38Is it local?
38:39I said it was local.
38:41From the local supermarket, you said.
38:43Yeah, but I said it's local.
38:45Yeah.
38:45That's what I said, but I blagged it.
38:47So, what do you think of the towels?
38:48If there was rose petals, you would have seen me walking out the door.
38:51Yeah, I know.
38:52I know.
38:53But, look, probably not my thing, but they seem so keen of what they've done.
38:59They've done a lot of work.
39:00They've put a lot of effort into it, so it's lovely to see.
39:04And they seem like a really lovely couple.
39:06They are, yeah.
39:10Six hours ago, none of these couples had hosted a guest house before.
39:15It's been a stressy day.
39:16It's been an emotional day.
39:19I'm just glad it's on my way.
39:21It's been a baptism of fire.
39:24Shoes, okay, and also I need you to look for pillows.
39:27Right.
39:29Take your time.
39:30Take your time, baby.
39:31Baby, I love you.
39:32They've given everything they have.
39:36There we go, folks.
39:37Oh, lovely.
39:38Tea?
39:39Yes, please.
39:41New Yorkshire tea?
39:42Absolutely.
39:47But only the judges decide who has made the strongest start.
39:52As day one draws to a close, it's time for the judges' HQ.
39:57Well, guys, we have had the most exciting, very interesting day.
40:03I'm wondering if we shouldn't be particularly harsh in our judgment,
40:09because if they don't get better than they were today,
40:12then they don't deserve to win such an incredible prize.
40:16Such a big prize.
40:17Nicola, tell us about your people.
40:19I had Michelle and Steve, who were extremely warm, welcoming, lovely.
40:25When they opened the door to me, it was almost like being greeted by two Springer Spaniels.
40:33It was just full on.
40:36That was lovely for me, because I rather like Springer Spaniels.
40:41But I think if you were a little bit shy or more withdrawn, it might have been a bit full on.
40:48But they were so warm and natural.
40:52So beautiful.
40:53Steve, have you done a runner?
40:58Where is it?
40:59That's me!
41:01Of all of the people that we've met, I think she's the least nervous of the lot.
41:05No, I think you're right.
41:05Because I think she's absolutely confident in who she is.
41:09And that's really refreshing, to be honest, because...
41:11It was refreshing.
41:13The bedroom, they had done a swan towel and a heart towel on the bed.
41:19I think what I would like to say is, I don't believe the towels should be on the bed.
41:24Agreed.
41:25Right.
41:26So they shouldn't be sculpted into a swan and a heart on the bed.
41:29Well, while I appreciate the art, the skill, you know, I think there's an issue with hygiene
41:35here, because there's a lot of touching of that towel to fold it as well.
41:39Some guests might find that problematic.
41:43Eva, tell us about your hosts.
41:44So, I had Nicola and Roy, who are both wonderful, and just gave a really strong impression.
41:52Don't worry, the same for you.
41:54No, thanks.
41:55Not one.
41:55It's not raining yet.
41:56You've got a piano.
41:58In terms of the setup of the house, I found that the house was really clean.
42:02On closer inspection, I did find a couple minor lapses, some dust on top of the rain shower
42:06head, for instance, and a couple of watermarks on the chrome.
42:09In the bathroom, there were a couple of missing items as well, some quite important ones, so
42:15there wasn't any bin.
42:16In terms of the ease of use, there are similar elements.
42:19There's room for improvement, but they really complemented each other, and I think one of
42:24their strengths is going to be, you know, the teamwork aspect.
42:28How are you feeling now, love?
42:29Sick.
42:32We had a really odd faux pas.
42:35Our hosts, Jackie and Rob, didn't realise that they had to actually buy and supply the
42:41bedsheets.
42:43They misread the rules, and they were devastated.
42:46I mean, absolutely devastated.
42:46So how did they deal with that then?
42:48They were flustered.
42:49They were seriously flustered.
42:51Is it poppers?
42:54Oh, yes.
42:56The guests were very, very gracious, but our biggest issue was that they left them in the
43:02room with no sheets.
43:04So they weren't invited in the lounge for a cup of tea or anything like that?
43:07They asked if they wanted any refreshments, and then they said, would you like to stay
43:13in the room for a while?
43:14That's where we'd be like, get them out.
43:16We were in the corridor going.
43:19They forgot to breathe.
43:20Yeah.
43:21Yeah.
43:21And that was kind of made them go.
43:22So they perhaps weren't relaxed enough.
43:24And in fairness, they've only had six hours.
43:28Yes, but everyone has had six hours.
43:30Yeah, so we have to bear that in mind as well.
43:36The hosts have made their first impressions on the judges, but all is still to play for.
43:42Day one has brought challenges.
43:45That's fine.
43:46But we've managed to overcome those challenges.
43:50Well done, you.
43:51Come on.
43:53Oh, that was some day, babe.
43:55I hope that was hardest challenge.
43:59I'll tell you now, I don't think it was for you.
44:01I think there's more to come.
44:03Tomorrow, we'll bring a fresh challenge as the hosts have put through their paces once
44:08again, each step edging them closer to a life-changing prize.
44:15I'm really excited to see where this goes next because if we're able to judge this much
44:21so early, just imagine what levels they can achieve.
44:25It's going to be an exciting week, so...
44:28It is.
44:28Yeah.
44:29And what better company to do it with?
44:31Oh, Charlie.
44:35Next time...
44:37This is a lazy man's way of making home this.
44:39The B&B battle moves to breakfast.
44:42What's that, Steve?
44:43Is it a rose?
44:44Yes!
44:45French toast?
44:46It's a bit too runny.
44:48And a curveball challenge...
44:50Jack?
44:51What?
44:51We've got a guest arriving early.
44:53That's lovely.
44:54It's a good day.
44:54Puts the hosts to the test.
44:56No!
44:57Shh!
44:58Unfortunately, I forgot the duvet covers.
45:00This is one of our welcome gifts.
45:02It looks like a castrated cat.
45:24That's like...
45:24This is...
45:25That's why we're not looking forward to watching.
45:27There are many supplements to the their dear.
45:27We've got people.
45:28If you want to go, like.
45:28There are many views on this too.
45:29Yeah, it does ask.
45:30It looks like the forensics.
45:31That's...
45:31You'll see...
45:31See how I that works.
45:32This is a great
