00:00Come on Fletchers.
00:02We're heading into our fifth year of farming in the stunning Peak District.
00:07Here we go.
00:08They're coming!
00:10That's it, that's it, we've got to go.
00:13And we're making big plans from our new HQ.
00:16Being back at the farm 24-7, it just feels like the best feeling.
00:20In a caravan.
00:21It's pretty bougie.
00:23Alongside our four kids, who are each carving their own path as young farmers too.
00:28If any of my Jacobs give birth, I've got to do it.
00:33This year we introduce new breeds to the farm.
00:37I'm going to get a new flock of hens.
00:39I'm not even telling Kelvin, I'm just doing it.
00:42Come here, piggies!
00:44I forgot how much I love pigs.
00:46They're really cute.
00:48And continue our journey into arable farming.
00:51It's my wife, that.
00:53We've grown in confidence as farmers.
00:56I will not be defeated.
01:00Embracing the fun and chaos.
01:02Why could I not just have five minutes to eat?
01:05And together, we're working hard to live our life to the full.
01:09That was really good.
01:10You know what this calls for?
01:11What?
01:11A broom.
01:12I'm afraid.
01:19I'm afraid.
01:22This week on our farm.
01:24We mark the end of winter by hosting our very first farmer's market.
01:29And Marnie's Land Shack proves to be a big hit.
01:32Honey, Morocco, love sausages.
01:37Oh man, these guys are going to sell you out within an hour.
01:41With the first signs of spring in the air, plans to grow our herd get underway.
01:47So I'm already on the lookout for some more cows, and more cows who are already in calf.
01:54Ideally, a cow with a calf at foot who's in calf.
01:59Three lives the price of one, as they say.
02:01And lambing season starts early, with the unplanned arrival of two beautiful lads.
02:07He was born this morning.
02:09Born this morning?
02:11Yeah.
02:12So this is his birthday.
02:27Free range kids and animals are our heaven.
02:31Your brothers are drinking water from the drain.
02:36That is what you call farm kids, innit?
02:39Show me what a farm kid looks like.
02:41It looks like that.
02:42And since moving back onto the farm full time, we've loved watching the kids reconnect with farming life.
02:50There's 50 sheep all together.
02:5150 sheep?
02:5350 girls, and guess how many boys?
02:56Ten.
02:57One?
02:58One boy.
02:59To marry all of them girls?
03:02Yeah.
03:03Wow.
03:04What do you think of that?
03:05Good.
03:06That's really good.
03:08Marnie's flock, which will grow in size come spring, is certainly keeping her busy.
03:13Between us, we've got over 70 breeding ewes.
03:17So between us, we could have about 140 lambs.
03:24If any of my Jacob's give birth, I've got to do it.
03:29Okay, I'm taking the responsibility of my sheep, and you're taking the responsibility of us.
03:35Deal.
03:37And Milo is also keen to rear his own flock.
03:44But I've got 12 reasons to try and convince him to turn his hand to a different animal.
03:50We got the pigs in mid-December, and they were about six weeks old.
03:55So they've just been weaned, and that means they've just come off the mum, and then a mixture
04:03of gilts and boars, boys and girls.
04:06The boars are still intact, so they've not been castrated.
04:10And then we'll rear them then until what they call fattening weight.
04:15And as we've experienced going to market, unfortunately, these homegrown native breeds
04:21who have had the best life in the woods, best diet, just doesn't translate to a return,
04:28you know, a sustainable return, really.
04:32It just doesn't make financial sense.
04:35And then we've also sold at restaurants, which is better, and does make a good return.
04:41But still, you know, the holy grail is selling direct to you and I.
04:45So that's the intention with these.
04:47We'll rear them until they're fat, and we'll get them in boxes, and we'll do another farmer's market.
04:52And who knows, we've said that we might keep maybe one or two of the best girls
04:56and get them back in pick, because our pig story, after a little hiatus, is back on track.
05:05Milo's confidence with the animals has really grown this last few months,
05:08and making him part of the pig's journey could be great for him.
05:20Right.
05:21Look, there's another trough in there that I want to feed.
05:26Where are your wellies?
05:28That's it.
05:29Do it gently in there, all along.
05:32Right.
05:32Come on, let's give it a good swell out now.
05:35So, jump down, and you can do this swilling bit.
05:42Right.
05:43What I want you to do, start at the top and work your way down.
05:48Get nice and low and give it a proper good swell.
05:51And don't forget, you want to do this bit as well, the bit that you can't see.
05:55Yeah?
05:56Yes, sir.
05:57Good, good.
05:58Right then.
05:59Let's get that back up there.
06:07They're about three months old at the minute, and you'll typically finish pigs around between six to eight months.
06:14So, they're about halfway through.
06:18But this next three months, they will, again, just as dramatic the size increase has been thus far, it'll continue.
06:26Wait, are these all sheaths?
06:27No, no, some of them are boys.
06:29And we have a look for the little testicles.
06:32After a quick check, we've got eight bores and four gilts.
06:36So, real potential for expanding our drove.
06:40So, in the coming weeks for us, we'll separate them.
06:43So, we'll get the two separate pens, females and males.
06:48And then we'll be monitoring the females to see who makes grade, who potentially can live as a breeding female.
06:54And then we'll look at the boys.
06:55Same could be applied.
06:56They could be an exceptionally great boy that we keep as a breeder, but the rest of them will grow
07:01them to be fattened.
07:03And you want them to kind of finish before they start really exercising or demonstrating their testosterone.
07:11Because if you let that go on un-melted too long, the meat will be tainted.
07:16Because you know what they say about pigs?
07:19Cows will only eat grass and nuts, and sheep will only eat grass and nuts.
07:25Because they're rumen animals, whereas pigs eat anything.
07:31Pigs will eat anything.
07:32What's your favourite farm animal?
07:34I've never asked you that. What is your favourite animal?
07:36Pigs.
07:37Is it really? More than sheep?
07:39Yeah.
07:41Well, rather than get pigs next, rather than them...
07:44You know, Marnie's got her sheep, her own sheep, and you asked a lot to get some sheep.
07:48That's just following Marnie.
07:50Why don't you?
07:51Get pigs.
07:53Yeah, I guess.
07:54Milo seems sold on my idea.
07:56And if this lot grow well, we could be breeding from them by the end of summer.
08:01Come on, let's give these a stroke, then we can get going.
08:04Boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop,
08:11boop, boop.
08:12Can we ride with these?
08:14Go!
08:31With the signs that spring is coming
08:33across the fields and forests of our farm
08:35and with a new season on the horizon
08:38we're getting ready for our first event of the year
08:42a farmer's market
08:44we've invited some local producers to come and sell their wares
08:47alongside us in the barn
08:51and for once we're ready to go
08:54which gives me time to crack on with other jobs around the farm
08:57before we open our gates tomorrow
09:00Today I'm taking delivery of some special homegrown feed
09:04that will give our livestock a protein boost
09:12Sir
09:12Here, our oats, our spring oats
09:16that didn't make great for porridge
09:19made great for animal feed
09:22so here you have it
09:23somewhere in there are oats from our farm
09:26and farms locally, maybe around the country even
09:30but we've all played a part in producing this
09:34so there'll be other farms with this feed
09:37that have got a bit of our oats in their feed
09:42so yeah, still a success
09:46We were hoping for porridge
09:47but a lack of rain this summer meant our first crop didn't plump up enough before harvest
09:53so animal feed it is
09:56As soon as the cows hear the lady of the corn bin go up, they start
10:03Happy livestock means a happy farmer
10:08It feels good actually, yeah, it feels quite
10:12quite a proud moment
10:16that our little farm has somewhat kind of gone into the supply chain
10:20to produce something for many other farms
10:27It's these little things, these little kind of moments
10:30what you don't really
10:31you never really imagine or picture when you first start out
10:36I'd never have thought that we'd be going into the food chain, the supply chain
10:43I didn't know what to expect, I didn't really, you know
10:47It was just maybe to live a quieter life
10:51and it certainly wasn't that
10:53I mean
10:55It does actually smell quite nice
10:58The real test is the taste, I'm not trying it
11:02Shall we give some to the cows and see how they are?
11:06Whilst I top up the feed bins
11:08Liz and the twins have arrived to lend a hand
11:11with feeding time
11:13Mum, the water is coming
11:16Good
11:17That's enough now for the pigs
11:20Right, come on kids, get this bottom bit of hay
11:25Mum, I got some big hay
11:28Here you go
11:31We are really pleased that they love it and they do want their
11:34The thing is, they want to be in charge
11:38And that's great and we really encourage that
11:41But in that they just do whatever the hell they want
11:44You're like, no, no, there is a system
11:48On this farm it seems the chain of command has had a rather sudden reshuffle
11:53And at just three years old there's already a new foreman running the yard
11:59Mateus is the farmer so
12:01I am the boss
12:03Are you the boss?
12:04Yeah
12:04Well then, what can we say about that?
12:07I'm the boss of the cows
12:10Look, we do, we do!
12:12Shall we go and feed my hens?
12:14Yeah!
12:15Come on then
12:21Right, the moment of truth
12:25Let's see if the cows like it
12:30Come on then
12:33What do you think?
12:34Let me know
12:42Straight in
12:43Crowther and Ray, they love it
12:45Ruby, come on you can have a little bit
12:50The boys are loving this
12:53That's a great review isn't it?
12:54Five star review from Ray and Crowther
12:57That's not the end of Ults
12:59It's just the beginning
13:02Might be the end of that particular chapter
13:05But Ults
13:06Are still yet to be conquered
13:09And they're there for the taking so
13:12That's, this is Ults part one
13:13Mark my words
13:17We'll be having Fletcher porridge oats
13:20I don't doubt that
13:21I don't doubt that for a second
13:25Best fed cows in Cheshire
13:28Come on then
13:32You're welcome cows
13:33Yeah
13:38pan in Cheshire
14:00You're welcome cows
14:01Thanks, ma'am
14:01You're welcome, my friends
14:02Just stop a cucly
14:02They're hungry
14:03You're hungry
14:03You're hungry
14:03our livestock numbers and our small herd of native Lincoln Reds have an
14:08important part to play in our plan to expand that's just what an absolute
14:17privilege this is they're hardy but with gentle temperaments and have proven to
14:23be such big characters on the farm Kelvin yeah there's a bull here there's a what
14:34there's a ball just when you thought you'd you know they saw the next minute a
14:40bull arrives but this winter has been a season of mixed fortune
14:48we hit a great milestone with the first of our cattle being sent to produce
14:52organic meat blimey I wasn't expecting that that is that's incredible is that
15:00all hours yes Wow there are your primal cuts can I feel a bit overwhelmed this
15:09is I've never that's just amazing but any joy was overshadowed by the sudden and
15:17unexpected passing of cherry due to pneumonia no idea at all what's what's
15:24caused it I'm just feeling a bit of shock it's absolutely gutted we're learning to
15:34deal with the highs and lows of farming life and today could be the start of the
15:39next chapter for our herd as vet Hugo has arrived to give Ruby a pregnancy test
15:47the slight jeopardy is we pulled Crowther out we separated Crowther from the
15:54females in December so she's only been given three and three and a half months
16:01really with the bull so we're just hoping maybe that was a bit premature I don't know
16:06maybe I should have let Crowther run with her a little bit longer but I didn't I pulled
16:09Crowther away so we'll see whether that might gamble paid off a cow cycle is
16:17around 21 days so Crowther had three chances to get Ruby in calf before we
16:22separated them as for Ruby although she miscarried once she's produced a couple
16:27of cracking Lincoln reds our award-winning bull calf ray followed by our
16:32first heifer Elizabeth who was born late summer last year so yeah I'm in that
16:37miscarriage kind of puts you back you lose two or three months and suddenly
16:40you're at the back end of summer then and it has a knock-on effect and that's
16:44it you know that's that you're forever timing things and that's the beautiful
16:47cycle you just you're going by nature's rules you know nature dictates her
16:52gestation period which is two hundred and ninety days so you know that when
16:56you're sending the bull in there if he does the job you've got two hundred and
16:59ninety days to wait until you get a calf once Ruby is safely in the crush
17:04Hugo can get to work with his portable pregnancy tester hey up get on that yo
17:16hold on good job so you've gone all high-tech you go do any other do any other farmers get
17:24this or are we getting special treatment only if they ask for it how many ask for it not many
17:30not many they're not that interested in most of them so we've got hopefully this by this little
17:36lab we can see what Hugo's seen with his little glasses having such a small herd means that every
17:41pregnancy is special so I'm loving Hugo's nifty bit of kit that'll show me if Ruby's in calf
17:48instantly can you see this yeah so you've got a calf there there's a 2d image that's like a slice
17:56through a calf there you can see his ribs okay and then you've got that empty bit that black area
18:02that's its stomach right and you've got liver around it you can see its legs poke yeah you can see
18:08its legs
18:08so this calf is it's about 11 week pregnancy that beginning of December December so not long before the
18:20ball came out yeah how lucky so she's in calf brilliant yeah I mean Ruby it's good to get an
18:28idea of how her recovery is she obviously this is she had a second calf in September and three months
18:33later she's back in calf so that's a good sign and crowd was obviously again doing a job which is
18:39good
18:39if it's bittersweet to be honest that you know it is really good and but bittersweet obviously we were
18:46off we lost cherry so should have been two cows being PD today I'd like to think cherry would have
18:54been two months ahead and we could be expecting two calves as opposed to just one but we just need
18:59to
18:59get another camera don't we we'll need to replace cherry so I'm already on the lookout for some some more
19:06cows and more cows who are already in calf ideally a cow with a calf at foot who's in calf
19:15three lives the price of one as they say so excellent good good done really well and
19:23she's got in calf sort of three months after yeah that's not a bad going really that's just bang on
19:28that if you're aiming for a calf every 12 months she she's doing what she's doing the job to do
19:33yeah
19:34ideal yeah cool excellent thanks you go that's good anyway because you just don't know how it's
19:40going to go especially if there's only one to scan and there's a negative it's a bit of a blow
19:44wouldn't
19:44it I know the question is will it be another heifer calf or a bull calf you've given us a
19:49heifer you've
19:51given us a bull what will you give us next this is a you know this is really exciting it's
19:56a relief
19:56she's not you know I won't make any bones about you she wasn't my favourite cow
20:02cherry was my favourite she had such a lovely temperament
20:05cherries a show winner and you know ruby's not had the same sort of attention we've never shown
20:11her in the ring but the best thing about ruby is despite a temper of them not being quite as
20:16good
20:16as what what cherries was she's produced arguably the better calves she's produced ray who's a looks
20:23like he's gonna be the best bull that we've we've had is I'd argue he's probably better than crowder
20:28you know crowder's son is he's already looking like he's he's better than him which is good and
20:33then she produced our first ever calf but Elizabeth who's looking great as well so well done ruby well
20:41done yep go on mate oh it's gonna go back it's been a whirlwind of a few months for our
20:53small herd
20:53and we've been ready for some positive news and this really is it
21:15there's more good news in the lodge too gingers puppies are thriving and as tempting as they are
21:21to keep one they'll soon be off to their new homes so we can concentrate on our farm animals and
21:29today
21:29Liz is kicking off her day with the ever hopeful hunts hidden treasure in the chicken coop
21:44we've got eggs in the most random places ever they have become very confident in the last thought of week
21:52or so and they're really venturing out now so they've got a beautiful coop there but they can get in
22:01at night stay warm go in the little side bit lay an egg
22:04no no no no they don't want that they sit on that cage and they sleep on top of that
22:09and take the blistering cold
22:12and now they've just chosen to lay on the wet floor yeah these were supposed to be the posh ones
22:19that you know
22:20wanted a bit of vip absolutely not they've clearly been here long enough and now they know just get on
22:26with it get on with it girl
22:28the good thing is got eggs little bluey green eggs like they said a lot of smaller than the leghorn
22:37eggs these are quite small
22:41trust our harakuna ladies to ignore the five-star accommodation and go completely off-piste
22:48she laid an egg there if she's been on it we could take that straight into the incubator shortly
22:54why is she laying there it must have just come out there
23:03yeah
23:07yeah that's that's warm
23:10put that in my pocket keep it warm
23:13it's good news because we've waited a long time they were too young to lay and now they're obviously laying
23:18so
23:20i'm hoping that cockerel's doing his job and we're gonna have some chicks soon they're gonna start sitting on them
23:25what's harder to control now kids are hens look at them they're just feasting in the garden
23:30look at them not bothered just doing whatever they want just like my kids
23:34do whatever they want
23:56late night early start no good for anyone is it
24:00they're not early this morning to go and collect marnie's land
24:04um but the butchers treated me to a bacon sardy
24:09so
24:10not more if they didn't give me a brew but they gave me a bacon sardy so i was happy
24:15today's the day of another first on our farm
24:18our own fletcher's farmer's market
24:22i'm gonna pack marnie's fridge up
24:24have a bit of a sweep up a bit of a tidy up
24:26and then hopefully get the show on the road
24:32marnie's jacob lamb burgers
24:39get my lights on
24:41alongside marnie's lamb shack we'll be selling our blankets and gin
24:45and the rest of the barn will be filled with other traders
24:48who have just arrived to set out their stalls
24:51how are you
24:53nice to see you
24:54yeah very well thank you very well
24:57hello hi julia nice to meet you okay
24:59we've written on the floor so
25:00forgive me are you are you where are you from again
25:03pottery you're in this corner
25:18we've tried to invite a nice mix of food producers and artisan crafters
25:23who are as passionate about their products as we are
25:30this looks amazing
25:31so i say fletcher's on the farm
25:34wow that is impressive
25:36tomorrow's lunch for you
25:38yeah that'll last us a week that
25:42so what are you selling here
25:44we're selling honey
25:45honey
25:46let's try some
25:48there's a chocolate plate on it
25:49honey
25:50with chocolate in it
25:51do you know what it's great to see
25:52these are all small family round businesses
25:56and it's just nice to see
25:58them all in one space
25:59honey made freshly from them
26:01pies made freshly from them
26:03bread buds made by them
26:05like it's all
26:08made at their own locations
26:10local to here
26:12look how talented everybody is
26:15and one guy said this is the poshest farmers market i've ever been to
26:20wow
26:23didn't realize that
26:26well posh is a new one for us
26:29and with a lamb shack fridge now full
26:31man is adding the finishing touches to her own stall
26:37i'm writing a sign for my lamb shack
26:47that is the best writing i've ever seen
26:49so we've got in here we've got rosemary and garlic sausages here
26:56and then here we've got marnie's jacob lamb lamb and mint sausage
27:02oh i like that one
27:03then we've got kidney

27:19got a lot of lamb in there
27:31everybody's in
27:32there's one or two vendors just still setting up but the majority of them are here and good to go
27:38looking good
27:38totally transformed the whole barn really
27:41so much
27:43with hot drinks and food setting up at the entrance to keep everyone fed and watered
27:47we're officially on countdown to the first shoppers arriving
27:52right what time is it
27:55in ten minutes people will be walking up ready to do some shopping
28:01it has been so far
28:04so relaxed

34:51there's a male
34:52got in amongst them
34:53without us knowing

35:51top issues aside
35:53mana is happy to claim the new mixed breed lambs as her own
35:59i know what i'm going to call this one

36:04rain that's a nice name
36:06and the other one's called ray
36:08rain and ray
36:11and these two boys will be the first of our lambs to grow up with their bits left as nature
36:16intended
36:17this year what we're doing which is different to any other year
36:21we're not castrating
36:22so we're keeping every single male intact
36:24we're going to trial sub them
36:26we're going to see if that improves their growth rate
36:28so yeah two tuplams
36:30whereas normally we'd
36:32we'd tail and castrate straight away
36:34but we're not castrating so we'll keep them intact
36:37as you can see they're feeding on mum
36:39two happy lambs

40:23no i'm really pleased for her
40:25really really

42:46yeah it's been a good day
42:47yeah
42:47it's been lovely hasn't it and we've had such good feedback
42:49it won't say
42:50customers
42:51yeah
42:51yeah now we've had a bad day
42:53oh good good
42:54have you so many pies has that been successful
42:56100
42:56all right okay

43:00good
43:01good
43:01yeah
43:01yeah
43:02yeah
43:02i do about 60 to 70 there
43:07all right okay
43:08yeah
43:08oh good
43:09well that's nice then to know that you've uh it's worth your while

43:24yeah
43:25oh brilliant well thank you guys
43:27thank you very much
43:28i've got my tea sorted for tonight
43:30well this is good because mine is sold out of a lamb so i was hoping to try some sausages
43:44happy traders profits made an encouragement to host more not a bad way to end our first farmers market
43:53i've always i used to go to tommyfield market and hold them as a kid
43:56me too
43:58and i used to love it
44:00there is something about the
44:01there was something about that market that used to draw me
44:03you've got to know where you are in life and we're market trainers and there's nothing wrong with that
44:07it's actually a good life
44:09you're right
44:09you're right
44:11i mean i believe i belong in a factory i totally believe i belong in a market stall
44:15it's just something about them that like busyness isn't there
44:20you know what i like most is that they're like us
44:23they're all producers of some sort
44:26so whether it was wicker basket man
44:27mm-hmm
44:29chopping boards
44:30grubabs
44:31honey
44:32whatever it is they're all taking pride in what they're doing
44:35and it's a real sense of community
44:38that's the normally everything we do is just it's just us isn't it
44:40whereas that felt the first time where there's
44:42there's other people who have that shared
44:44passion of producing something
44:47and then getting to meet
44:50the people are going to buy it and have that rapport with them
44:53we're all done
44:55from tommyfield market to fletcher's market
44:58really well after that
45:00some of the ones we can add
45:01market traders
45:03yeah i am i was a good little good event
45:07and what a great day having nothing but positive feedback from people
45:10and it's made me realise that
45:12what does this become now
45:14is this something that's full time
45:16or is this something that's regular
45:18this has to become a permanent fixture
45:21yeah
45:23well we've certainly not let the grass grow under our feet this year
45:27and with spring approaching
45:29we've got plenty more to look forward to
45:35we're in the era of the horse apparently
45:37what's that
45:38we're in the era of the horse
45:39we've shedded the snake
45:40now we're in the horse
45:42which means we're going to gallop in the wind
45:44we won't stand it
45:44but maybe it's a sign
45:46honestly it's a thing
45:47really?
45:48yeah it's been good
45:50what a year
45:51what a year
45:52here's a cuddle
45:54what a year
45:55what a year
45:57what a year
45:57it's been emotional
45:58it has
46:00it has
46:00now
46:01it's operation
46:02build your house back
46:05you
46:28you
