00:00Rick, is there anything you can do to to fix this? I mean, because you just said, I mean, I
00:07got the answer to it, but there's never happened. I've said this decades ago. Okay, Dan, decades ago, all professional
00:14team sports blew it by not putting money on the line for every game an athlete plays every game that
00:21you play.
00:22If you're a professional athlete, there should be money involved. If you win, you get the money. If you don't
00:27win, you don't get the money. You have a guaranteed contract. You determine what that's going to be for the
00:32really top players. Then you negotiate. And here's where an agent comes in. How many games realistically can this team
00:37win? Let's just say 50, for example. We'll take Steph Curry, one of my favorite players. So Steph is making
00:4250 something million dollars a year. So you're going to guarantee Steph $5 million. That's what he gets. And he
00:48gets guaranteed the top guys get 5 million, which to me is insane anyway.
00:51Now, let's say the Warriors should be able to win 50 games and you could become an agreement. Steph Curry
00:57would get a million dollars for every win. So he now makes $55 million, which is guaranteed now under the
01:02contract, right? But they have to win the games. So every game that Steph plays and they win, he's getting
01:08an extra million dollars. Somebody else might have a guaranteed contract only for $500,000 and he gets $50,000
01:14to win. But every player has money on the line for every game played.
01:18You come down to the last game. You come down to the last game of the season. Do you think
01:21some guys are going to not want to play if there was all that money on the line?
01:26It'll solve the issue.
01:29Rick, how did it get here? I mean, did money really corrupt the sport here? I mean, when you guys
01:35played, it was for the...
01:37Rick, I can tell you this, and I've known you all these years.
01:41Man, if you were making today's money, that wouldn't deter you not to play because you had a love of
01:46the game.
01:47How did this become institutionalized where players now are looking with this load management?
01:53How did it get here from those eras of you guys and the guys standing on your guys' shoulders right
01:59now, where this league is and the kind of money that they're making?
02:02How did it get here?
02:04Well, it did at 180. First of all, the owners were taking advantage of the players by the kind of
02:08money they were paying.
02:09They were making so much money, and then they tried to work that out.
02:11But then the owners lost their minds. They created Frankenstein, and he turned on them.
02:17I mean, now they're giving so much power to the players. It doesn't make any sense.
02:21Why would you want to do that? You should come to some mutual agreement.
02:24They kind of did as far as having salary caps and things of that nature.
02:28But why they wanted to spend that much money for the players is nuts.
02:32Now they've given them so much power. There's no way the owners could ever put this in.
02:36This should have been put in and negotiated decades ago. Can you imagine every football game, every hockey game, every
02:42soccer game, every basketball game being played on a professional level, that every player has money on the line?
02:47It would be like the seventh game of the playoffs every time they stepped onto the court.
02:51Do you think a guy gets hurt that he's going to take forever to rehab?
02:54He's going to bust his hump to get back, because why?
02:57If that team's losing games, it's costing him millions of dollars or hundreds of thousands of dollars.
03:05There's just a problem with professional sports having guaranteed contracts that you get paid whether you play like crap or
03:10not or you give a damn or not.
