00:00I am married to a white woman.
00:02Now, I'm Puerto Rican, so I had a really big week.
00:04You know, watching Bad Bunny's halftime show, I was bawling, filled with love and pride.
00:08And my wife, you know, she enjoyed the show for similar reasons,
00:11but she got a little something else out of it.
00:13The Bad Bunny halftime show actually answered a question for her about Puerto Ricans
00:18that she said she had been too scared to ask.
00:20And that question was, what's up with all the machetes?
00:24Now, I will admit my culture has more machetes than average.
00:27And I guess as a Puerto Rican who grew up surrounded by this imagery,
00:31I didn't think anything of it.
00:32I was machete blind.
00:34But you know what?
00:34I guess it is kind of a very threatening object by nature.
00:38But Puerto Ricans, we like to bedazzle them, put the flag on it.
00:41So I guess I forget it's a scary object that people from the states don't encounter often.
00:45So, you know, they might take note if it's around more often.
00:48In fact, she says she asked me once.
00:50She was like, why are all Puerto Ricans holding machetes?
00:53Your abuela, your dad, your doctor, you're all holding machetes.
00:55And apparently I went, oh, no reason, which she said was such a scary answer.
01:00And I was like, you're right, you know,
01:01because the only thing scarier than someone holding a machete near you
01:05is if you go to an island where everybody's holding a machete
01:07and you go, guys, why are you holding machetes?
01:10And they all go, oh, no reason.
01:12That's way scarier.
01:13I didn't know she was going through this.
01:15But the Bad Bunny Halftime show showed her that machetes
01:18were used by Puerto Ricans in harvesting sugarcane.
01:20So they've become a symbol of our culture and our hard work
01:23in the sugarcane fields.
01:24And they symbolize our farmers and our history.
01:26So we like to honor them.
01:28But I was a bad Puerto Rican and I didn't mention any of that to her.
01:31But Bad Bunny did.
01:32Thank you, Bunny.
01:33Now she's significantly less scared.
01:35The machetes are just for the sugarcane and for arts and crafts.
01:39And we as a people are way more concerned with dancing in the driveway,
01:42La Malquesina,
01:43than we are with the machete and you.
