For twelve days in July, 1916, a shark patrolled the waterways of northern New Jersey. This docudrama is based on Richard Fernicola's account of those days.

00:01:00One of the hottest summers on record.
00:01:02Beach bathing was now all the rage.
00:01:05Bigger than the bicycle.
00:01:07Even bigger than the horseless carriage.
00:01:12Across the ocean they were fighting a war.
00:01:14But nobody really thought we'd get caught up in it.
00:01:17Right off our own coast, German U-boats prowled the waters, looking for a kill.
00:01:24But that wasn't our problem.
00:01:29New York, Philly, Boston were all facing a polio epidemic.
00:01:34Mothers were desperate to get their kids out of town to our beaches, where the air was fresh and clean.
00:01:44Then, out of nowhere, our own local crisis hit.
00:01:48It took us by surprise, and it knocked us for a loop.
00:01:55In some, it brought out the best.
00:01:59In others, well...
00:02:11Who's going on?
00:02:58That summer was hard.
00:03:00The hardest of my life.
00:03:02It started in July with those hot, sunny days.
00:03:07And if you were anywhere near the Jersey Shore,
00:03:09all you could think about was getting out of the heat
00:03:12and into that cool, cool water.
00:03:16Hello, Mr. Stone.
00:03:18What did you see here?
00:03:44Here we go.
00:04:08Ahoy, bear lifeguard!
00:04:11Yeah, you!
00:04:14So, how many lives have you saved today?
00:04:17Hello, Louise.
00:04:19All set for a swim, are we, Stan?
00:04:21Yeah, you two can smurf all you want,
00:04:24but while I'm out here, I'll sell one of these suits.
00:04:26You wait and see.
00:04:27Why not put on a sandwich board and parade up and down?
00:04:31You are looking for trouble.
00:04:33Oh? And of what sort?
00:04:45Stanley!
00:04:47Alex, will you please teach your friend to hear some manners, if possible,
00:04:51before the big day arrives?
00:04:52I'm afraid it's too late for that.
00:04:55Hey, boys and girls, this way, please!
00:05:02So, Stan, did you come all the way down here just to advertise your shop,
00:05:05or is there something I can do for you?
00:05:07Uh, as a matter of fact, he escorted me, Alex.
00:05:10I need your opinion, if you'd be so kind.
00:05:14Which one do you like better?
00:05:19Well, Stanley refuses to offer an opinion about anything connected to the wedding,
00:05:23and I'd value a man's point of view on this one particular thing.
00:05:28Green.
00:05:32Goes with your eyes.
00:05:40See?
00:05:41What?
00:05:42Thank you, Alex.
00:05:43I knew you would take me seriously.
00:05:46And you can keep the cake.
00:05:49Uh...
00:05:49I need you, ladies and gentlemen.
00:05:51Oh, yes, ma'am.
00:05:53Yes.
00:05:53Thank you very much.
00:05:54This is your genuine, guaranteed, sun-browning lotion.
00:05:59Sun-browning lotion.
00:06:00That's what I should be doing.
00:06:02That looks snake oil for two bits and bottom.
00:06:04Don't undersell yourself, Alex.
00:06:06You might be onto something.
00:06:07You could be the first one with your foot in the door.
00:06:09First one to get slammed on my nose, you mean?
00:06:11Alex.
00:06:13You don't want to be sitting in that chair five years from now.
00:06:23Um...
00:06:24Look, I've been thinking.
00:06:25That's a dangerous pastime for you, sport.
00:06:28Ha-ha.
00:06:31I was just...
00:06:32wondering.
00:06:34With our wedding coming up and...
00:06:36I don't know.
00:06:38You and Louise.
00:06:39Look, Stan.
00:06:40That was a long time ago.
00:06:42I wish only happiness for both of you.
00:06:44Happiness and nothing but.
00:06:46Thanks, Alex.
00:06:48That means a lot.
00:06:49Yeah, to...
00:06:50both of us.
00:06:52I'll see you later.
00:07:09Hey, how are you doing?
00:07:11Good to see you.
00:07:12Good to see you.
00:07:13Good to see you later.
00:07:14Good to see you later.
00:07:16Good to see you later.
00:07:18Good to see you later.
00:07:18Good to see you later.
00:07:19Good to see you later.
00:07:19Good to see you later.
00:07:19Oh, Charles.
00:07:20Don't be long.
00:07:21We have to dress for dinner.
00:07:22Relax, mother.
00:07:23There's loads of time.
00:07:24Why don't you come in?
00:07:26All of you.
00:07:28Whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:07:28Easy there.
00:07:29I'm so sorry.
00:07:30There's a lot of children around here.
00:07:31Sure.
00:07:32Sure.
00:07:33How is it past the breakers?
00:07:34It's a little rough in spots.
00:07:35Oh, I'm at the temperature.
00:07:37I can handle the undertow.
00:07:38Well, it's cold.
00:07:39It'll sap your strength faster than you think.
00:07:42Thanks.
00:07:43For your concern.
00:07:45Come on.
00:07:47Hey, come on.
00:07:49You wanna swim?
00:07:53All right, ladies and gents.
00:07:54I'm gonna have to ask you to take this little social hour elsewhere.
00:07:57All right.
00:07:57See you later.
00:07:59Danny, a little chitchat's all right, but you can't let it develop.
00:08:02Besides being a distraction, it's bad form.
00:08:04It's unprofessional.
00:08:04I had it covered.
00:08:05I really did.
00:08:06Uh-huh.
00:08:09Old man, gray hair, swimming goggles.
00:08:1180 yards out.
00:08:11Where'd he go?
00:08:17Crossed into my zone about two minutes ago.
00:08:19He's coming in now.
00:08:20Right.
00:08:21It's all about concentration, Danny.
00:08:23Can't afford distractions and be effective at this job, all right?
00:08:27Here.
00:08:28Something to keep you going.
00:08:30What's...
00:08:30What's the...
00:08:35Hello, mother?
00:08:40Charles, be careful.
00:08:42Don't go out too far.
00:08:43He's fine.
00:08:46Sandy.
00:08:49Sandy.
00:08:50Hello.
00:08:56Come.
00:09:05Come on.
00:09:06Watch this.
00:09:13Look at them all there on the wall.
00:09:14I mean, isn't it a perfect setting?
00:09:21Help!
00:09:26Help!
00:09:28Help!
00:09:55Come on, guys, get him off!
00:09:56Grab his legs, grab his legs, get him off!
00:09:59That's it!
00:10:04He's got a leg up!
00:10:05Can you hear me?
00:10:07Go get some help!
00:10:08Somebody find a doctor!
00:10:09He's gonna bleed the death, we're gonna wrap it!
00:10:11That's it, come on, keep his leg now!
00:10:14Hurry up!
00:10:15Let's get him to the hotel!
00:10:17Get him off!
00:10:18Come on, let's go!
00:10:19Get some help!
00:10:21Oh, get him away!
00:10:23Get him away!
00:10:23Get him away!
00:10:25Get him away!
00:10:26Get him away!
00:10:26Stop the trouble, Ben!
00:10:28Stop the trouble!
00:10:29Get that blanket off!
00:10:32Get him away!
00:10:35Move!
00:10:36Let's get him on the couch!
00:10:37Get him on the couch!
00:10:39The doctor!
00:10:40Where's the doctor?
00:10:42The doctor!
00:10:44Yes?
00:10:45He's lost a lot of blood!
00:10:46Good!
00:10:47All right!
00:10:48Step back here!
00:10:49Step back here!
00:10:49All right!
00:10:50Elevate this leg!
00:10:52I've got no idea!
00:10:53Just put the pressure right there!
00:11:03I'd like you to meet the lifeguard who pulled young Van Zand out of the water!
00:11:12Good job, son!
00:11:14Thank you, sir!
00:11:15Alex!
00:11:16Mr. Meehan is the New Jersey Commissioner of Fisheries!
00:11:19He'd like to ask you a few questions!
00:11:22Of course!
00:11:22Just got back from the morgue!
00:11:24Gasly side must have given you quite a shock!
00:11:26The Van Zands have been coming to our hotel since Charles was a boy!
00:11:30I couldn't have felt worse if I'd lost one of my own!
00:11:33I spoke with Mrs. Van Zand briefly!
00:11:35Please, sit down!
00:11:36But you can imagine, under the circumstances, she wasn't able to help us much!
00:11:44Now, is it true you told the coroner it was a shark attack?
00:11:47Yes, sir!
00:11:49Did you see a shark yourself?
00:11:52No, sir, but I did see what it was doing!
00:11:55Did you actually see, with your own eyes, something you could positively identify as being
00:12:00a shark?
00:12:03Well, no, sir, but...
00:12:04Well, how did you come to the conclusion that it was one?
00:12:08Well, the man had a huge bite taken out of his leg.
00:12:11What do you think it was?
00:12:12What I think it was, what you think it was, is unimportant.
00:12:15I have to take an analytical approach, work with the facts.
00:12:18There are all kinds of predators out there!
00:12:19The ones that attack like that?
00:12:21I'm not just talking about animal life.
00:12:23We've got German U-boats here, son, and these very waters.
00:12:26I wouldn't even completely rule out an errant torpedo.
00:12:30A torpedo?
00:12:31Alex, Mr. Meehan's simply trying to do his job.
00:12:38All right, I'm sorry, but whatever it was, you are gonna close the beach, at least until you know for
00:12:44sure.
00:12:46Aren't you?
00:12:46Well, I only control this little piece right here.
00:12:49But so far Mr. Meehan doesn't think a closing is warranted.
00:12:53There's never been an unprovoked shark attack on these shores.
00:12:56Not in my lifetime, anyhow.
00:12:57It's a scientific fact.
00:12:59Killer sharks won't swim inshore.
00:13:02But suppose one did?
00:13:03Supposing one did.
00:13:05It would have been a freak occurrence.
00:13:07Is that right?
00:13:08Uh-huh.
00:13:09Whatever did that...
00:13:10Would be well on its way back out.
00:13:14But what if...
00:13:15What if it...
00:13:16Alex, nobody's asking you to take this on your shoulders?
00:13:20We'll make sure this gets the attention it deserves.
00:13:28Hello, my friend.
00:13:29That's your friend.
00:13:38You're welcome.
00:13:40Good to see you.
00:13:41Good to see you.
00:13:42Good to see you.
00:13:43Good to see you.
00:13:49Oh, yeah.
00:14:06It's a bit rough well, maybe it'll be nicer tomorrow. Hey, I hope so. See ya
00:14:14Hey Lester yeah, catch one for me
00:14:28Hey Alex, got some fish for ya
00:14:36What's the matter with you, did he get fired?
00:14:40Guess you didn't hear about the attack
00:14:41Oh yes, that I did, yeah, was it you that pulled him in?
00:14:45Yeah
00:14:45You know, it takes a mighty brave man to go into the water
00:14:48But he knows he's sharing it with a shark
00:14:52How'd you know it was a shark?
00:14:53Well, that's what the scuttlebutt has
00:14:55Well, you were there, was it a shark?
00:14:58Well, I didn't actually see it
00:14:59But you saw its work, right?
00:15:01You saw the bite
00:15:03Yeah, I saw the bites
00:15:05How big?
00:15:09That's a big one, all right
00:15:15You know, there's a warm current coming in from the south and east
00:15:20And probably pulled in something like a bull
00:15:24Perhaps a tiger
00:15:25The man from the fish and game said that a shark wouldn't attack a swimmer
00:15:28Well, you see that old shark, he didn't read the same book as the man from the fish and game
00:15:32See, sharks don't think like us
00:15:34But believe me
00:15:37When that was happening
00:15:39Everything made perfect sense to that shark
00:15:46Alex, you're right
00:15:52They left the beach open
00:15:58You know, they used to say that if ever your dog got hold of a chicken, you'd have to shoot
00:16:02it
00:16:03Because once it got a taste for poultry, it would keep wanting more
00:16:13Hey, hey, Alex
00:16:14How are you situated?
00:16:16You know, the fish ain't biting right at the moment
00:16:18I mean, this old shark is just starving to death
00:16:21You stole my foot
00:16:23You're just thirsty
00:16:24Well, that too
00:16:26And thirsting to death is even worse
00:16:33Ah, you're a good boy
00:16:36Hey, come out of that water with all the tin toes?
00:16:39Last time I checked, man
00:16:40You can stay like that till the end of the summer, you'll be ahead of the game
00:16:44Thanks, Cap
00:17:08Hey, bye
00:17:09Hey, come out of that water
00:17:11Hey, bro
00:17:12Hey, man
00:17:12Hey, man
00:17:26Hi boys.
00:17:26Hi Al, hi Al, sit low.
00:17:33Yeah, yeah.
00:17:49Give me a little more width.
00:17:51Yeah, give it a little bit more.
00:17:53It's very much the modern look.
00:17:55It works nicely.
00:18:03Well, well, the man of the hour.
00:18:05Mr. Merritt.
00:18:07Alex, we heard. Are you all right?
00:18:08Yeah, I'm fine. Finish what you were doing.
00:18:11Oh, finish. Right, Stanley?
00:18:13Yes, sir. Unless there's anything else you require.
00:18:16No, no. Fine piece of work.
00:18:18Did they find out what caused the accident?
00:18:22I'm not certain, but possibly a shark.
00:18:29It's a pity about that boy.
00:18:32I understand he was from a good family, too.
00:18:34I'll have it ready for you Thursday, sir.
00:18:36Perfect.
00:18:38Now, how about that second suit?
00:18:39Well, 20% off.
00:18:42Light imported wool with this hot spell we've been having.
00:18:45Stanley, you're a go-getter.
00:18:47No one can deny that.
00:18:50Mr. Merritt, if you knew for sure it was a shark, and it was all up to you, would you
00:18:58close the beach?
00:19:03Well, I can't really say, Alex.
00:19:07I guess I'll leave it to the experts.
00:19:12Would you hear? The A's beat the Red Sox yesterday.
00:19:14Well, I guess Boston's got to let somebody else slip through once in a while.
00:19:18Alex, keep up the good work.
00:19:24Are you sure you're all right?
00:19:27Stan, a man up and dies, maybe from a shark attack, and you and the mayor get going on baseball?
00:19:32I didn't want to put him on the spot right here in my shop.
00:19:35He's the mayor.
00:19:36That's his job!
00:19:37Yeah, okay, okay, but settle down.
00:19:39You don't just walk into a concert hall and yell fire unless you're damn sure.
00:19:44Besides that, maybe you forgot who's coming to town tonight?
00:19:46What's that got to do with anything?
00:19:47Woodrow Wilson, President of the United States, Alex.
00:19:51The man could have his summer vacation anywhere, but he comes back to his home state.
00:19:55Why?
00:19:55To help promote the sea-bathing craze.
00:19:58Alex, the hotel you work at wasn't even there when we were kids, remember?
00:20:02Just look at Matawan.
00:20:04Now it's a real town.
00:20:07You could tear all that down by speaking too soon about something you're not 100% sure of.
00:20:13What if it happens again?
00:20:21You know, I hope you run for office someday.
00:20:23I'd vote for you.
00:20:25For God's sake, Stan, it's not just about good business, is it?
00:20:28That's not what I meant.
00:20:29Doesn't a man still have to stand for something?
00:20:32Alex, don't go away mad.
00:20:36I'll see you later.
00:20:49Change, industrial development has come so rapidly
00:20:55that it has created a world far different than that which we were born into.
00:21:02But as one frontier closes, so another new frontier has opened.
00:21:09And yet America has never been better equipped to march towards this new frontier with courage,
00:21:17ingenuity, but above all, a commitment to making this world a more humane place.
00:21:23And so I say to you, my fellow Americans, do not fear this change.
00:21:29Life as we know it will endure.
00:21:32America will continue to prosper.
00:21:36Our shores will be safe from war.
00:21:45Alex, thanks for coming.
00:21:46It's okay, Mr. Engel.
00:21:48Great man, our president.
00:21:50Yes, sir.
00:21:50Well, let the Germans and the French fight all they want.
00:21:53You'll keep us out of the war.
00:21:56Look, son, I want you to know, I've been on Commissioner Meehan's back all afternoon.
00:22:02He just telephoned to let me know they've been talking with all the experts.
00:22:05You know, big museums in New York and such.
00:22:09Yes, sir.
00:22:10They're all saying the same thing.
00:22:12Assuming it was some kind of an attack from a shark.
00:22:15There's absolutely no chance of it ever happening again.
00:22:19Freak occurrence.
00:22:20One in a million.
00:22:22That's good science, son.
00:22:24Something you can rely on.
00:22:27Yes, sir.
00:22:29Thanks for letting me know.
00:22:31I guess I'll see you tomorrow.
00:22:33No day off?
00:22:34I think I'd just as soon get back on the job if it's all the same to you.
00:22:38Of course.
00:22:39Of course.
00:22:41Good man.
00:22:43Alex.
00:22:46Louise.
00:22:49I'm so glad to see you.
00:22:52I was worried.
00:22:53It must have been so awful.
00:22:57I'm fine.
00:22:59Thanks.
00:23:00Stanley told me what you said.
00:23:02Your good wishes for us.
00:23:04I meant it.
00:23:06I really hope you're getting what you want.
00:23:09Of course it's what I want.
00:23:13So, everything turned out for the best.
00:23:17That's right.
00:23:18We looked each other in the eye and agreed.
00:23:20It wasn't meant to be.
00:23:23Have you ever had any second thoughts?
00:23:33That's not a fair question.
00:23:47I suppose I had...
00:23:53Louise.
00:23:57What about you?
00:24:00What about me?
00:24:02What?
00:24:02You know what?
00:24:06The question is no more fair when you ask it.
00:24:16Fair enough.
00:24:19He's a good catch, Louise.
00:24:22You made the right choice.
00:24:29You're a dear friend.
00:24:33I hope it will be for always.
00:24:57The day after Charles Van Sant was buried, six days after the attack, the trains were full.
00:25:04The hotels were booked, and the beaches were packed.
00:25:09What happened to Van Sant can never happen again.
00:25:12Still, most people did little more than get their feet wet.
00:25:15I did...
00:25:24I was so Selbst buttons.
00:25:26Oh, man.
00:25:38You're a little better.
00:25:39Ah, right?
00:25:39I know.
00:25:43I've got questions about that.
00:25:44Oh, man.
00:25:45Oh, man.
00:25:45I've goteng image, bro.
00:25:45I've got a ride.
00:25:56Looks like you're slowing down a bit there, champ.
00:25:59Don't surprise me at all.
00:26:00I'm way out of practice.
00:26:01You think you'll try again?
00:26:02Try what?
00:26:03The Olympics.
00:26:04What else?
00:26:05Well, first, they're going to have to end the war.
00:26:07They're going to keep canceling the damn thing.
00:26:09Second, it was just a tryout.
00:26:11It's not like it would have really made the team.
00:26:12Sounds like you're still pretty upset about it.
00:26:15How old are you, Danny?
00:26:1619?
00:26:16Well, I'm not 19 anymore, and I'm still out here on this beach.
00:26:20And yeah, being in the Olympics, even if it was a tryout, it would have at least been something.
00:26:28Damn!
00:26:28What?
00:26:29Those boys are out too far.
00:26:31No, no, no, no whistles.
00:26:32Everyone's too jittery.
00:26:35They're in Kirkwood's zone.
00:26:36Will you do me a favor, go over there and tell them to swim out there and bring them in
00:26:38closer?
00:26:39I'll take care of it.
00:26:41All right.
00:26:43Be careful.
00:26:49Hey, fellas.
00:26:51Huh?
00:26:51Yeah?
00:26:52You've drifted a little too far out here.
00:26:53We're good swimmers.
00:26:54We got the two.
00:26:55Fine and dandy, but you need to be closer to shore.
00:26:58Come on.
00:26:59Okay, I'll tell you what.
00:27:00I'll race you to shore, and you guys can have a head start.
00:27:03All right.
00:27:04Go ahead.
00:27:05Go ahead.
00:27:22Did you say something?
00:27:25Swim fast!
00:27:26Straight to shore.
00:27:28Just keep going.
00:27:35Hey, everybody out of the water!
00:27:38Out of the water!
00:27:46Kirkwood, get the boat!
00:27:49Get out of the water!
00:27:54Everyone out of the water!
00:27:56Get out of the water!
00:28:00Come on, come on, let's go!
00:28:02Let's go!
00:28:06Come on!
00:28:09Come on!
00:28:10There he is!
00:28:10Whoa, whoa!
00:28:14Got him!
00:28:16Danny!
00:28:17Daddy, get him out!
00:28:20Danny, get him out!
00:28:21Danny, get him!
00:28:23Get him out!
00:28:24Danny, get him out!
00:28:27God, stay with us!
00:28:28Stay with us!
00:28:29Danny!
00:28:31Danny, Danny, stay with us!
00:28:32Do you see anything?
00:28:34Danny, Danny, stay with us!
00:28:36Danny, you're going to be okay.
00:28:38Danny!
00:28:39Danny, stay with us!
00:28:40It's okay.
00:28:41Come on.
00:28:43It's okay.
00:28:45Stay with us.
00:28:46It's okay.
00:28:47It's okay.
00:28:48It's okay.
00:28:49Eddie, Eddie.
00:29:21Alex, for God's sake, son.
00:29:25Good science, Mr. Angle.
00:29:28Good science.
00:29:28Isn't that what you called it?
00:29:29Just calm down before...
00:29:31No chance of it happening again?
00:29:32Isn't that what the experts said?
00:29:34Nobody should have been in that water, Mr. Angle.
00:29:36Nobody!
00:29:37Alex, all of us are upset.
00:29:39Will you do one thing for me, Mr. Angle?
00:29:41Will you go out there and take your good science
00:29:43and your no chance of it happening again
00:29:44and you explain it all to Danny Bruder's family?
00:30:09Tell us.
00:30:11I'll see you.
00:30:11I'm too late.
00:30:14I can pussy the guy.
00:30:19I had to pee and pee.
00:30:28I had to pee once again.
00:30:32We'll see you tomorrow.
00:30:34We'll see you tomorrow.
00:30:35Yeah, that's all right.
00:30:37All right, stop.
00:30:38You, you, you.
00:30:53Good afternoon, gentlemen.
00:30:55I'm Frederick Lucas, director of the museum,
00:30:57and I'm joined today by Dr. John Nichols,
00:31:01our resident ichthyologist.
00:31:02Now, as you were aware, the federal government
00:31:05and the state of New Jersey have asked us
00:31:07to conduct an investigation into the recent shark attacks
00:31:10along the New Jersey shore.
00:31:12Sir, didn't the two of you recently publish an article
00:31:14stating that sharks are never aggressive
00:31:16and that a shark attack on humans is not scientifically possible?
00:31:20The article you cite was not quite as unambiguous as you portrayed.
00:31:25Nevertheless, you can imagine
00:31:28how concerned and intrigued we are
00:31:31as we watch science turn another page.
00:31:34Sir, what can you say to the 30 mayors along the Jersey shore
00:31:37all of whom are trying to allay the fears of panicked vacationers?
00:31:40I'll hand that one off to Dr. Nichols,
00:31:42who will be conducting the investigation in the field.
00:31:45John.
00:31:46We continue to believe that another attack is highly unlikely.
00:31:51However, caution is always in order,
00:31:53or perhaps I should say precaution.
00:31:55Sir, how do you plan on protecting the public?
00:31:58I assume you're aware of the steel fences
00:32:00that are being installed in the water down at Asbury Park
00:32:03and some of the other shore resorts.
00:32:05We feel this is an adequate response at this time
00:32:07to restore confidence in the community.
00:32:10Any other questions?
00:32:11Yes, sir, over here, sir.
00:32:24All right.
00:32:26So, Murphy, are you coming or not?
00:32:30I don't like New Jersey.
00:32:31It's hot down there.
00:32:32Oh, and it's not hot here?
00:32:35We'll be near the water.
00:32:37I know a chap who's got a boat
00:32:39with a motor, hmm?
00:32:43All right, well, just promise me
00:32:45it doesn't involve any dangerous animals, will you?
00:32:47Oh.
00:32:50It'll be an adventure, Murphy.
00:32:53A very profitable adventure.
00:33:05Give me it, give me it.
00:33:06We've got an adventure, Murphy.
00:33:08Oh, come on.
00:33:10Come on.
00:33:11Come on.
00:33:14Come on.
00:33:21Come on.
00:33:22Come on.
00:33:27Come on.
00:33:28Come on.
00:33:29Come on.
00:33:29Come on.
00:33:29Come on.
00:33:29Come on.
00:33:29Where the hell have you been the last two days?
00:33:33We've been worried sick about you.
00:33:35I'm sorry.
00:33:35I need a little breather.
00:33:37You dress down your boss, you quit your job,
00:33:39and you just take off?
00:33:40Stan, there was a little matter about a couple
00:33:42of shark attacks.
00:33:43I think you heard about them.
00:33:48All right.
00:33:51Look, you have my undying support
00:33:53on the principle of the thing.
00:33:55It took some sand to quit,
00:33:56and I admire you for that.
00:34:00There's a butt in there somewhere.
00:34:01Alex, you don't think about the future.
00:34:05Something like this could hurt you.
00:34:08Supposing you wanted to set up a business,
00:34:09that sun-browning thing, or I don't know.
00:34:12What are you driving at, Stan?
00:34:13I could talk to Mr. Engel.
00:34:15I'm sure he'd take you back in a flash.
00:34:17Would you please kindly tell me what you...
00:34:18Damn it, Alex.
00:34:19It looks like you chickened out.
00:34:22That's what it looks like, huh?
00:34:24What about you, Stan?
00:34:26Is that what you think happened?
00:34:27I didn't say that.
00:34:27Let me tell you something.
00:34:28I can't respect a man who would put people's lives
00:34:30in danger just to keep his business open.
00:34:32That is not...
00:34:32And I sure don't intend to work for one.
00:34:34And I sure don't give a damn how it looks to you
00:34:35or anyone else on the face of this earth.
00:34:49Alex, I hear you're looking for a job.
00:34:51I need a bigger town.
00:34:53Hey, hey, hey, steady on.
00:34:55Steady on.
00:34:56Hey, barman.
00:34:57Yeah, come on.
00:34:58Give my friend a drink here.
00:34:59And one for me.
00:34:59Coming up.
00:35:00All right, I'm buying it.
00:35:01I'm buying it.
00:35:05I've got a job.
00:35:07I'm going to put up a big fence
00:35:08to stop those big fish with sharp teeth
00:35:11from nibbling those bathers.
00:35:13Consequently, I'm in the market for a first mate.
00:35:16Such a man should be strong of arm,
00:35:18have no brains whatsoever,
00:35:20and above all, must be able to hold his liquor.
00:35:37You got the fence there?
00:35:39You got it?
00:35:40Yeah.
00:35:41That's it.
00:35:42All right.
00:35:42As soon as we got this section in,
00:35:44I'm going to catch us all some fish for supper.
00:35:47While you're at it, why don't you catch the shark?
00:35:49There's a reward out.
00:35:50Notice you said the shark instead of a shark.
00:35:54Most people assume it's just one.
00:35:56Like a mad dog.
00:35:58What if they're wrong?
00:36:01More damn sharks out there this year
00:36:03than I've ever seen.
00:36:04Warm tide bringing them in.
00:36:08What if they're just in the mood to bite?
00:36:12Happens to other fish, why not then?
00:36:15Well, whichever it is,
00:36:17it won't be happening on this beach anymore.
00:36:20Amen to that.
00:36:23Okay, it's the usual drill.
00:36:25We've assessed as we can,
00:36:26stay close to me.
00:36:27You see anything, don't panic.
00:36:30Just sing out and swim for the ladder.
00:36:33All right?
00:36:34Yes, sir.
00:36:34Let's go.
00:36:35Let's go.
00:36:36Let's go.
00:36:37Let's go.
00:36:47Oh, my God.
00:37:09Did you get it tight?
00:37:11Yeah.
00:37:23Ready?
00:37:24Yeah.
00:37:51I think I saw something.
00:37:53What?
00:37:53A shot.
00:37:54I don't see no damn shot.
00:38:00Get him out of the water.
00:38:10Come on, swear to me, you devils.
00:38:12Come on.
00:38:19Come on, come on.
00:38:20Swim for the boat.
00:38:21Come on, come on.
00:38:23Swim for your life.
00:38:24Come on, all of you.
00:38:25Quick.
00:38:29Quick, move it.
00:38:30Move it.
00:38:36Come on, Alex.
00:38:37Get on board.
00:38:38Come on, come on.
00:38:39Good boy.
00:38:40You all in?
00:38:41Yes.
00:38:42Hey, Vic.
00:38:43You got grays on.
00:38:46You son of a...
00:38:47Hey, hey, hey, Vic.
00:38:48Please, please delay that.
00:38:51Any man here does not have the stomach or the steadiness of hand.
00:38:57For what we do, go home now.
00:39:01Otherwise, take five minutes and we're back to work.
00:39:04Get that covered.
00:39:06Don't want to be in the water with that, eh?
00:39:09Well done.
00:39:10Well done, boys.
00:39:11Well done.
00:39:12Well done.
00:39:37All right.
00:39:38I've come all this way, will you?
00:39:40Now, will you kindly tell me what it is you're cooking up?
00:39:42I just want to walk around for a bit.
00:39:44Take it in.
00:39:45It's so exciting.
00:39:46All these people see the sun.
00:39:49It's good for you.
00:39:50Aren't you interested in beach bathing?
00:39:53It sounds mighty dangerous to me.
00:39:56Are you aware of the fact I've had shock attacks here?
00:40:01Now you're getting the idea.
00:40:02Right?
00:40:04No.
00:40:05No.
00:40:05No.
00:40:06No.
00:40:07No.
00:40:08No.
00:40:08No.
00:40:08No.
00:40:09Murphy!
00:40:10Come on, I'll buy you a beer.
00:40:12All right.
00:40:22Mr. Fisher!
00:40:22Mr. Fisher!
00:40:23Please go away!
00:40:25Please go away!
00:40:26Oh, I don't know, fellas.
00:40:27I'm kind of tired.
00:40:28But the other team is Mr. Burlue, and we need a grown-up, too.
00:40:32And they're not half bad.
00:40:33Ha, ha, ha!
00:40:34Mr. Fisher!
00:40:35Come on!
00:40:35Mr. Fisher's a busy man.
00:40:37I'm sure you boys can find someone else to play.
00:40:40Actually, Mrs. Stilwell, I was just about to say yes.
00:40:43As long as I get to be on your son's team.
00:40:45Oh, I've got to play.
00:40:47Yeah, let's go!
00:40:49Okie dokie.
00:40:50Who's our best fielder?
00:40:51Right here!
00:40:53Oh, ho, ho!
00:40:54You guys are practicing again.
00:40:55High ball.
00:40:56Very good.
00:40:57We're ready for the lead out into the outfield.
00:41:02Over here!
00:41:03Over here!
00:41:03Alex, right here!
00:41:04It's going back!
00:41:06Alex, right here!
00:41:11Hi, Stan.
00:41:12Hi, Alex.
00:41:14Well, I'm just going to clean these, put them on a plate.
00:41:17Ready for you, Stan.
00:41:18Thanks, Cap.
00:41:19Rain check.
00:41:22I'll meet you in there, Cap.
00:41:25I didn't mean to.
00:41:27Are we going to play yet, Mr. Fisher?
00:41:30I'll meet you at the field in a minute.
00:41:31See ya.
00:41:37Sorry I spilled beer on you.
00:41:38Yeah, it smelled like a saloon.
00:41:41Took a lot of explaining to Louise.
00:41:48I know you meant well.
00:41:50It wasn't my place to judge.
00:41:51I got to thinking about what you went through out there on that damn beach.
00:41:57Stan, I sent Danny Bruder out there.
00:41:59Hey, you were doing your job, and he was doing his.
00:42:05Yeah, but you...
00:42:06Same if it was the other way around.
00:42:08Danny wouldn't want you to be putting yourself through all this.
00:42:12Yeah.
00:42:15Yeah.
00:42:18Thanks.
00:42:22Now, time is running out.
00:42:25I'd rather come in tomorrow or let me cut you a suit.
00:42:27Oh, Stan, no.
00:42:28I couldn't accept it.
00:42:29I got to have my best man looking his best.
00:42:31Is tomorrow good for you?
00:42:33Knuckleball?
00:42:33I'll have to check my appointments, spitball.
00:42:35I never threw a spitball in my life.
00:42:37Oh, I don't know about that.
00:42:42Oh, yeah.
00:42:43Losing your touch there, spitball.
00:42:45Ah!
00:42:46Come on.
00:42:46Come on.
00:42:47Come on.
00:42:48Come on.
00:42:59Welcome, Dr. Nichols.
00:43:01Can I take your bag?
00:43:03I'll keep this one.
00:43:04It's just the other three.
00:43:05Dr. Nichols!
00:43:06Dr. Nichols, what kind of shark is it?
00:43:08Is there just one?
00:43:09I'm sorry.
00:43:09The museum has no statement to make it this time.
00:43:11Is the president planning to go swimming here today, sir?
00:43:12I have no idea.
00:43:14Good afternoon.
00:43:15Tell his sweet 24th place.
00:43:18Here you are.
00:43:18Oh, thanks, Eddie.
00:43:19My pleasure.
00:43:20Bring your catch in here anytime.
00:43:27Thanks, Gary.
00:43:33Uh, pardon me.
00:43:35I'm, uh, looking for Mr. Treadnought.
00:43:38Oh, yes.
00:43:38He's right over there.
00:43:40Alex.
00:43:41Ah.
00:43:42Good evening.
00:43:43I'm, uh, John Nichols, uh, ichthyologist with the Museum of Natural History in New York.
00:43:48Good evening.
00:43:50Uh, could I, uh, have a moment?
00:43:52Sure.
00:43:53Just, just let me get these plates out of the way.
00:43:58What kind of ologist did you say you were?
00:44:00Uh, ichthyologist.
00:44:01I'm a fish man.
00:44:03Hmm.
00:44:04Uh, please have a seat.
00:44:05Oh, thank you.
00:44:07Uh, I'm, uh, here about the, uh, shark attacks.
00:44:11Well, I don't know how much help I can be to you, Mr. Nichols.
00:44:14I, uh, I really didn't see that much.
00:44:16Oh, I was under the impression you were there for both attacks.
00:44:19Well, it's funny.
00:44:20A lot of people who are nowhere near the place can give you all kinds of gory eyewitness details.
00:44:24I was too busy pulling those boys out of the water to really pay much mind to the shark.
00:44:29I understand.
00:44:30But, uh, you probably saw more than you think.
00:44:33Now, in your statement, you said that young Mr. Bruder was struck numerous times?
00:44:40Yes, sir.
00:44:41I did see that.
00:44:42Uh, with great force?
00:44:46Uh, uh, as I understand it, Mr. Bruder's legs were never recovered.
00:44:52Now, did you see them during the attack?
00:44:58I'm upsetting you.
00:44:59I'm, uh, I'm sorry.
00:45:06Uh, I'm, uh, here for several days.
00:45:09Uh, perhaps we could talk again?
00:45:12Yeah.
00:45:12I, uh, I'm, uh, I'm pretty easy to find.
00:45:19Mr. Nichols?
00:45:23Just, uh, what, what does an ichthyologist do?
00:45:27Uh, study fish.
00:45:28Talk about fish, write about fish.
00:45:31And you went to school for this?
00:45:33Perhaps more than I should have.
00:45:35Better to be out there in the water with the fish, huh?
00:45:39Yeah, except when the big ones bite.
00:45:44There is that.
00:45:48Thanks for your time.
00:45:57On July 12th, 1916, the sun rose at 5.37 a.m.
00:46:03The gulf stream continued its flow inshore, warming the waters.
00:46:20Morning, Navy.
00:46:22Hey, Cap.
00:46:23You know, kind of early start, aren't you?
00:46:25Ah, well, I'll get back for it gets too hot.
00:46:30Got a steady job.
00:46:32You first mate, hmm?
00:46:34Life can't be bad.
00:46:34You want some?
00:46:35No, thanks.
00:46:36Gotta get to work.
00:46:39Catch me a couple for lunch, will ya?
00:46:41Be my pleasure.
00:46:44Ah, those fish will be biting today.
00:46:48Dad?
00:46:49Yes, son?
00:46:49Can I go swimming after work?
00:46:51By 8 o'clock, it was already hot and humid.
00:46:55I will.
00:46:56The people of Matawan went to work, ran their businesses, took care of their kids.
00:47:02Have a good day, son.
00:47:03Thanks, Dad.
00:47:04Just like they always did.
00:47:10By 9, it was clear.
00:47:11It was going to be a real scorcher.
00:47:14Morning, Frank.
00:47:15A good day for the beach.
00:47:19Frank, you look confused.
00:47:21Sometimes I am confused, Stanley.
00:47:23Well, just remember, you arrest the bad guys, and you cut the customer's hair, not the other
00:47:27way around.
00:47:28Thanks, brother.
00:47:29Never gotten it backwards yet.
00:47:33Thank God.
00:47:36With the heat rising, folks from the cities forgot about the sharks, and headed for the
00:47:41beaches in record numbers.
00:47:46It was now 12 days since the first attack.
00:47:54It's lunchtime, everybody.
00:47:56It's lunch.
00:48:03It's lunch.
00:48:10Hey, Lester.
00:48:12Hey, fellas.
00:48:13You look hot.
00:48:14Yeah.
00:48:15I am hot.
00:48:17I'm better not.
00:48:19Well, you know what you can do about that, don't you?
00:48:21Yeah.
00:48:22Yeah, I would, but I can't.
00:48:25Eight feet.
00:48:26An eight-foot boat, Michael.
00:48:28Why, a shark could bite that in half without even trying.
00:48:32I'm not honked with that.
00:48:34We're just gonna scout around in it to see what we can see.
00:48:38You can do as you please.
00:48:40I'm on the next train out of here.
00:48:43Murphy!
00:48:46I am disappointed in you.
00:48:50Now, do I know animals?
00:48:52We're gonna go out there.
00:48:54We're gonna take a look around, then I'll know where to bring the fishing boat.
00:48:57I've got a sick sense about these things.
00:48:58We'll see.
00:49:02Eight feet, Michael.
00:49:04I hope you get back, all right.
00:49:15Hey.
00:49:17You're a long way from home, aren't you?
00:49:36Good God.
00:49:38Good God.
00:50:02Hello?
00:50:03Yeah.
00:50:04Give me the chief of police.
00:50:05Frank, for you.
00:50:06Oh, hello.
00:50:13Maltzoff.
00:50:14Hey, Frank, Frank.
00:50:17Slow down.
00:50:19Who's talking?
00:50:20It's Cap.
00:50:20It's Cap, Frank.
00:50:21Listen, listen.
00:50:22There's a large shark heading up the creek.
00:50:26A shark, you say?
00:50:27Yeah, that's right.
00:50:28I'm a shadow and bring to look down.
00:50:30There's a large shark, and he's heading up the creek.
00:50:34In the creek?
00:50:35I hear you, Frank.
00:50:38Now, do something about it.
00:50:39You'd have a better chance of seeing an elephant cooling off down there.
00:50:43Frank, listen to me.
00:50:44Frank.
00:50:45Frank.
00:50:46Frank.
00:50:48Damn it.
00:50:50Slow down, Cap.
00:50:51Slow down.
00:50:52Listen.
00:50:52I'm going to need your boat.
00:50:54I need your boat.
00:50:56Will you listen to me?
00:50:59Hey, come on, guys.
00:51:01We swimming or what?
00:51:02How much longer, Lester?
00:51:05Well, I usually don't get off until three o'clock.
00:51:10Three o'clock.
00:51:11Oh, my gosh.
00:51:12We're going to die.
00:51:13Yeah.
00:51:14Let me say that.
00:51:16Lester.
00:51:17Yes, sir?
00:51:19If I might count, you've put on a hundred handles so far?
00:51:23Yes, sir.
00:51:25Well, I'm afraid I might get overstocked.
00:51:28I believe you better knock off early today.
00:51:30Yes, sir!
00:51:31Thanks, Dad.
00:51:33Yeah, Lester.
00:51:34Yeah, Lester.
00:51:35Yeah, Lester.
00:51:35Something is good, guys.
00:51:45This is great.
00:51:46Hey, boys!
00:51:47Keep away from the water.
00:51:48There's a shark in here.
00:51:50There's a shark.
00:51:51Now, you listen to me.
00:51:52Keep out of that water, or I will tell your dad, and he will whop you.
00:52:05Come on, let's go.
00:52:07Yeah, it's the water!
00:52:08It's good.
00:52:48There's a shark in the creek!
00:52:50There's a shark in the creek!
00:52:51Don't go near the water!
00:52:53Get your children out!
00:52:54There's a shark in the creek!
00:52:56I don't know, Lester.
00:52:58Don't go near the water.
00:53:00Great job, kid.
00:53:05Yeah!
00:53:40Shark!
00:53:41Shark!
00:53:43Get everybody out!

00:53:49Get out, get out!

00:54:12He's in the crib!
00:54:18Oh, my God!
00:54:20I'm gonna have a look.
00:54:24Here's Lester.
00:54:25Come on!
00:54:25Let's go!
00:54:27Fred! Stan, what's going on?
00:54:29Lester's in the crib!
00:54:35Okay, guys, we gotta be careful.
00:54:36If the yardmaster spots us, he'll run us off.
00:54:39Shhh!
00:55:02I said we're the shark.
00:55:04Oh, come on, Red.
00:55:05We're almost four miles upriver.
00:55:06Yeah, there's blood out there.
00:55:08Maybe he's head on the rock?
00:55:10Or he started vomiting or something.
00:55:12Oh, my God.
00:55:12How long has he been under?
00:55:16Oh, my God!
00:55:43You're nothing!
00:55:52Alex!
00:55:53Alex!
00:55:55Shark in the creek!
00:55:56What the hell are you talking about?

00:56:19Keep going, fellas!
00:56:21All the way!
00:56:22Right across!
00:56:24Crack!
00:56:27What's all this about?
00:56:29Over here!
00:56:30Colonel will take the boy right out to sea if we don't catch him with something.
00:56:38Are you coming?
00:56:39No.
00:56:42Just a few feet!
00:56:43Oh!
00:56:45Careful!
00:56:49Oh!
00:56:51Oh, God!
00:57:03What the hell?

01:00:08Not anymore, it's not. Is the track clear?
01:00:09I've been trying to tell him, we just got to see it!
01:00:12Listen, my best friend is going to die if we don't get him to a hospital now!
01:00:15I'm sorry, Becky!
01:00:16My best friend is going to die!
01:00:17This train is going to be in Asbury Park in 30 minutes!
01:00:20With you driving or me!

01:02:06Here, boy!
01:02:07Joseph!
01:02:16All right, you'll be all right.
01:02:17Your lights okay?
01:02:18Yeah. Go get help, quick!
01:02:21You'll be all right, man. You'll be all right.
01:02:41You'll be all right.
01:02:43Alex.
01:02:45I'm here, Stan.
01:02:49I found Lester.
01:02:54No.
01:02:57I found Lester.
01:02:59Come here.
01:03:07No.
01:03:08No.
01:03:11No.
01:03:13No.
01:03:16No.
01:03:23No.
01:03:25No.
01:03:26No.
01:04:28The beach towns. Business was dying.
01:04:38It seemed like the whole country had gone shark-man.
01:04:43Lester's body still hadn't been found, but not for lack of trying.
01:04:49Everyone either wanted to kill the shark, or make a buck off him.
01:04:58The circus was in town.
01:05:16Do you have a plan for killing this monster, Mr. Nichols?
01:05:18As tempting as that sounds, sir, that is simply not my main concern here.
01:05:23It wasn't just the experts and the fakes, but good people got drawn up in it, too.
01:05:28Look closely, folks, but do not put your hands near these jaws, for even in death, they have been known
01:05:33to take a man's hand.
01:05:35How long did it take you to land her?
01:05:37Hard to tell.
01:05:38Time plays tricks when you're fighting for your life.
01:05:41How can you be sure this one's the killer?
01:05:42Because when I hold her aboard, a lump of human flesh and bone fell out of her mouth.
01:05:55Yeah, well, uh, that's about all we got time for, for this group, I'm afraid.
01:05:59Uh, thank you very much.
01:06:00Move along the next group now, please.
01:06:06Thank you very much.
01:06:08Very much.
01:06:10Yes.
01:06:12Good evening.
01:06:13Good evening.
01:06:13Good evening.
01:06:14Hi.
01:06:15Hi.
01:06:16I'm wondering if there's any messages.
01:06:17Yes, sir.
01:06:18Yes, sir.
01:06:31I'm going shark hunting, Dr. Nichols.
01:06:34And I'd appreciate it very much if you could tell me what I'm looking for.
01:06:41I think what you're after is a great white shark.
01:06:45You got a minute?
01:06:48It's one of nature's marvels.
01:06:50Carcharodon carcarius.
01:06:52The biter with jagged teeth.
01:06:55There were creatures not unlike it in the age of the dinosaurs.
01:07:00You know, it can grow to be 20 feet or more.
01:07:04The ones I saw weren't anywhere near that big.
01:07:07And my examination of the victim's wounds confirms that, Alex.
01:07:10It's a juvenile if it is a great white.
01:07:12I haven't ruled out the possibility of a bull shark, the fact that it went up the creek.
01:07:18Bulls can survive in fresh water, Lake Nicaragua, up to Zambezi in Africa.
01:07:30How do I find it?
01:07:35We've been wrong about so much.
01:07:37But my guess is it's a rogue that followed the current inshore, found a new source of protein, marked out
01:07:46its territory.
01:07:48It's still in the bay.
01:07:52I'd look where it's already been successful.
01:08:00Successful.
01:08:00Successful.
01:08:05Are you sure I can't talk you into coming with me?
01:08:09Well, when the Museum of Natural History goes on a shark hunt, Alex, or any other kind of hunt, it
01:08:15must do it in a certain way.
01:08:19So I, unfortunately, must decline.
01:08:24Well, I appreciate your time, Dr. Nichols.
01:08:30Alex, if you're determined to go ahead with this, please be careful.
01:08:34Don't do it on your own.
01:08:35The great white is a highly aggressive creature.
01:08:37It will attack willfully and with astonishing force.
01:08:43I know.
01:09:08Good afternoon, Eddie.
01:09:09What's the cat?
01:09:10I haven't seen him.
01:09:11Hello, Alex.
01:09:13I'm sorry about your friend.
01:09:19You're the doctor?
01:09:21No, just a good Samaritan.
01:09:23Who, in the course of exercising his profession, gained some experience in traumatic injury.
01:09:27What profession would that be?
01:09:30I'm a trainer of dangerous animals at the Bonham and Bailey Circus and a taxidermist.
01:09:37Michael Schleiser.
01:09:39Please take a seat.
01:09:44So you're a lion tamer?
01:09:46I know they're beasts.
01:09:47I train them, hunt them, speak to them, and stuff them if they misbehave.
01:09:55And you're here for the shark?
01:09:56Maybe.
01:09:57It all depends on my mood when I wake up in the morning.
01:09:59Okay.
01:10:01So if I said that you were going after the shark, would I be correct?
01:10:05I suppose you would.
01:10:07What do you know about sharks?
01:10:09Very little.
01:10:09But it doesn't matter.
01:10:10I have a special feel for animals.
01:10:12I can't explain it.
01:10:15Let me guess.
01:10:17You want the shark.
01:10:19But it's not about the money.
01:10:24You do realize there is a reward.
01:10:26Oh, I do.
01:10:27But you're right.
01:10:28It's not about the money.
01:10:29So you're seeking either fame or revenge.
01:10:33You see, Alex, revenge implies a debt.
01:10:36You owe someone.
01:10:38Maybe a couple of someone's.
01:10:40And you pay with the predator's life or with your own.
01:10:44And you don't particularly care which way it goes,
01:10:46which makes you the most dangerous predator of them all.
01:10:52You know, if this shark could be talked to death,
01:10:54you'd sure be the one to do it.
01:10:58You know, there was a moment when I thought we might be able to help one another, Alex.
01:11:03But I believe that you would be a danger to me.
01:11:07And to yourself, I made it.
01:11:15Mr. Schleiser, I just don't want to see anybody else get killed.
01:11:40You're going to hang that thing up there every day until it rots?
01:11:43That thing, as you call it, made me a pretty bundle today.
01:11:47You just went out and caught it on the end of a line, huh?
01:11:51Well, I guess that means you made the water safe for us all.
01:11:56All right, all right.
01:11:58What'd you do, go out and buy that thing?
01:12:00Yeah.
01:12:03A few miles up the coast.
01:12:05Paid a couple of dollars.
01:12:08Damn it.
01:12:09Can't a man try to make a buck out of the situation?
01:12:14Look, Alex.
01:12:15I wanted to go after the killer.
01:12:17And I knew you did, too.
01:12:20Especially after Stan.
01:12:22But you...
01:12:23You see, you get all heated up and go after revenge,
01:12:27and that devil gets you in the water.
01:12:29What are you saying? You did this for me?
01:12:32Well, I won't say I didn't.
01:12:33Cap, four people are dead.
01:12:34That little boy you pulled out of the creek is barely hanging on.
01:12:37Don't you understand?
01:12:38If people think it's safe to go back in the water right now...
01:12:41I know that!
01:12:41Cap, you gotta come clean about what you did
01:12:43before somebody else gets hurt.
01:12:45First thing tomorrow morning,
01:12:46you gotta go into that town and tell them what you did.
01:12:48You know what they think of me in that town?
01:12:49I was running down the streets warning them.
01:12:51They were laughing at me.
01:12:52I know, and that was wrong, Cap,
01:12:53but you turned out to be right.
01:12:57No, no, no, no, no, no.
01:13:00I'd sooner die than face them.
01:13:02I...
01:13:07Well...
01:13:09There's only one good way I can think of to avoid all that.
01:13:15Damn you, boy.
01:13:17You're twice as smart as a revenue man
01:13:19and three times as devious.
01:13:22Get your gear and come on board.
01:13:31Well, this is all fine and dandy.
01:13:34We don't get ourselves killed with your damn shark.
01:13:37It's not my damn shark.
01:13:39Take your helm a second.
01:13:42Yeah, hold it steady on that course.
01:13:51Think like a shark.
01:13:53Yeah, let's see.
01:13:55I took him in and have a...
01:13:58I don't know if you don't know it.
01:14:05Think like a shark.
01:14:13Hey, hey, he comes in on the tide.
01:14:17He was waiting for us
01:14:19when the guys were firing in the water.
01:14:21Then he goes out.
01:14:23Goes out and finds that warm current again.
01:14:34That's where your damn shark is.
01:14:36Just there.
01:14:37Exactly there.
01:14:39You'll take about 100 square miles.
01:14:44Don't worry.
01:14:45Bring her around to port.
01:14:54Ah, right.
01:14:55Let's, uh, lay a line of chum down along the ridgeline
01:14:59and, uh, do a little trolling for shark.
01:15:01Cap up the bow.
01:15:03What?
01:15:04Good.
01:15:09What the hell?
01:15:12Some fools made our shark a tidy breakfast, maybe.
01:15:18All right.
01:15:20Let's go and have a look at it.
01:15:39Shut her down.
01:15:41Ahoy there!
01:15:46What the...
01:15:48Shh!
01:15:51Shh!
01:16:07Cap!
01:16:08Did you see the size of that thing?
01:16:25Slicer?
01:16:26What in the hell are you doing here?
01:16:29Never mind.
01:16:30Just leave.
01:16:31Please.
01:16:32Thank you very much.
01:16:33What are you doing here?
01:16:34Presumably the same thing that you are.
01:16:36But I can tell you that I was here first,
01:16:39that I have an anchor planted, and you do not.
01:16:41Are you saying you're trying to catch the shark
01:16:44that just about took my head off?
01:16:46That's precisely my plan.
01:16:48That shark is bigger than your boat.
01:16:50She'll swamp you sooner than you can spit!
01:16:53Sir, let's not debate the finer points of how to catch this shark,
01:16:56or whether it is indeed a she or a he.
01:16:59For some unknown reason, as you've obviously seen,
01:17:03it's attracted to this little boat
01:17:04and to the unique personality of the person
01:17:06seated here before you.
01:17:08Don't ask me why.
01:17:09And suppose you don't get capsized and eaten outright.
01:17:12What, you plan to reach out and bop it on the head?
01:17:15I'm dragging a net.
01:17:17The shark will get caught up in that net.
01:17:19It'll take me on a long ride,
01:17:20and then it'll die, and that'll be that.
01:17:23That is the dumbest idea I've ever heard
01:17:26in my entire life!
01:17:28If you would be so kind
01:17:29as to just give me a little more room.
01:17:32Alex!
01:17:38Alex, this man, he's as crazy as a little.
01:17:41Oh, yeah.
01:17:41Now he's gonna get us killed.
01:17:42What do you want to do?
01:17:43I don't know.
01:17:45What?
01:17:46Holy smoke!
01:17:50Shark in the net!
01:17:51He kept it on the boat!
01:17:52Keep an eye on him!
01:17:53Hang on!
01:17:54Look at that!
01:17:55Oh!
01:17:56Oh!
01:17:56Slicer, hang on!
01:17:57That's it!
01:17:59Come on!
01:18:00Yeah!
01:18:02Hurry up!
01:18:02You're not as nice as you're dead now!
01:18:04That's the same enough!
01:18:05Camp, hurry up!
01:18:07Hang on, Slicer!
01:18:10Whoa!
01:18:12Get the cap!
01:18:13Get the cap!
01:18:15Whoa!
01:18:21Gotta try and get me!
01:18:23You see?
01:18:24I told you!
01:18:25Hold on!
01:18:25Hold up!
01:18:26Hold on!
01:18:26There she goes!
01:18:27Go!
01:18:28Go!
01:18:29Holy smoke!
01:18:39Back or down, Cap!
01:18:40Where are you?
01:18:54Where are you?
01:18:55Where is he now?
01:18:59Where?
01:19:01Ah!
01:19:02Oh, no!
01:19:05Further aboard!
01:19:08Oh, you!
01:19:12Oh, you!
01:19:14Oh, you!
01:19:15Oh, you!
01:19:16Oh, you!
01:19:19Oh!
01:19:20Oh!
01:19:25Come on!
01:19:27Come on!
01:19:27Come on!
01:19:37Come on!

01:19:48Come on!
01:19:52Come on now!
01:19:53Come on!
01:19:54Come on!
01:19:58You all right?
01:19:59Oh, no!
01:20:01Oh, my God!
01:20:03We'll see about that!
01:20:04Come on!
01:20:14He's getting away!
01:20:18Do something, man! He's getting away!
01:20:24Come on!
01:20:27Come on!
01:20:28Alex, move!
01:20:29Come on!
01:20:43Come on!
01:20:44Come on!

01:20:57Come on!
01:20:59Come on!
01:21:08Come on!
01:21:10Nice!
01:21:11Nice!
01:21:12No!
01:21:12Take her around to the bow!
01:21:21Hold her, boys!
01:21:22Hold her!
01:21:23Hold her!
01:21:24Hold her!
01:21:24Hold her!
01:21:25There we are!
01:21:29Hold her!
01:21:30Hold her pull for a while, eh?
01:21:32She's deserved it!
01:21:42Well, we got us a shark, gentlemen!
01:21:45Here!
01:21:46I've done it!
01:21:57It's an odd gift!
01:21:59I don't know where it comes from!
01:22:01I simply knew where to go!
01:22:02I knew the shark would come there!
01:22:04Attracted to the boat and to the person in it!
01:22:06Don't ask me why!
01:22:07The shark bait!
01:22:09That's what he was!
01:22:10Why don't you tell us about that, Captain?
01:22:11Well!
01:22:12It all began...
01:22:14the day I saw this creature
01:22:16from the bridge over Matawan Creek!
01:22:19Congratulations!
01:22:21Thanks!
01:22:22You think that's the one?
01:22:23We won't know until we look inside,
01:22:25but, uh, it's a juvenile great white!
01:22:27I'd say it's a pretty good candidate!
01:22:30Uh, I hope you'll make some time
01:22:32and tell us everything that happened!
01:22:34Sure!
01:22:35It'd be a great service to the museum!
01:22:40Dr. Nichols!
01:22:43Just, uh,
01:22:44how would someone
01:22:46go about getting into your line of work?
01:22:49Well, uh,
01:22:50a person could start by, uh,
01:22:52showing up at my office sometime!
01:22:56It seems all of a sudden
01:22:57I have about
01:22:58ten million questions to ask you!
01:23:00My friend,
01:23:00I could safely say the same thing!
01:23:03See you then?
01:23:06It was, without a doubt,
01:23:08the right of a lifetime!
01:23:10I can tell you that!
01:23:11But!
01:23:12There was a third person on that boat
01:23:14who deserves to be down here!
01:23:16What's your name, son?
01:23:18You two are telling it just fine!
01:23:19Thank you, Alex!
01:23:21Now, Cap will tell you!
01:23:22The teeth are big!
01:23:25How big?
01:23:25Very big!
01:23:27Big?!
01:23:27This man has not seen big teeth on a shark!
01:23:30I can show you big teeth on a shark!
01:23:32Why, there was monks I saw before!
01:23:35I'd kill you all!
01:23:37I'd kill you all!
01:23:39I'd kill you all!
01:23:39I'd kill you all!
01:23:57I'd kill you all!
01:23:58My head and foot CT!
01:23:59The white and white
01:23:59found pieces of human bone tissue
01:24:02in the stomach!
01:24:04The very same day,
01:24:05Lester Stillwell's body
01:24:06was recovered in the Creo
01:24:08where Stanley died.
01:24:11Of the five shark victims,
01:24:13only young Joseph Dunn survived.
01:24:16Two months after the attack,
01:24:18he walked out of the hospital
01:24:20with his brother, Michael,
01:24:22a pair of crutches
01:24:28the gulf stream that had brought the deep ocean predators into shore moved back out to sea.
01:24:36The shark attacks of 1916 were over.
01:25:00. . .
