00:02Seat belts, everyone!
00:04Please let this be a normal field trip.
00:06With a friend?
00:07No way!
00:08Cruisin' on down Main Street.
00:10You're relaxed and feelin' good.
00:12Next thing that you know, you'll see it.
00:16Octopus in my neighborhood!
00:18Surfin' on a sound wave.
00:20Swingin' through the stars.
00:22Take a left at your intestine.
00:24Take your second right past Mars.
00:26I'm a magic scuba.
00:28Navigate a nostril.
00:30I'm a magic scuba.
00:32Make a plain turn to.
00:33Take that!
00:34I'm a magic scuba.
00:36Drop the river of lava.
00:38I'm a magic scuba.
00:40Such a fine thing to do.
00:42So strap your bones right to the seat.
00:45Come on in and don't be shy.
00:47Just to make your day complete.
00:49You might get baked into a pie.
00:51I'm a magic scuba.
00:53Step inside, it's a wider ride.
00:56Come on!
00:57Right on the magic scuba.
01:10It's very nice, you guys, but it's nothing like a coral reef.
01:15According to Ms. Frizzle, a reef is a shallow place in the ocean.
01:19Ms. Frizzle also said that a coral reef is built by tiny animals.
01:24With tiny tools?
01:26Carlos!
01:30I meant tiny underwater animals, Carlos.
01:33Well, according to my research, coral reefs are alive.
01:38And gazillions of fish live there.
01:40So can we move the rest of the fish from the other tank to our coral reef now?
01:43Wait!
01:45We need one more thing to go right there.
01:47It's the only space left.
01:49And it's perfect for the shell Wanda and I are going to paint.
01:53Arrr!
01:54Avast me hearties!
01:56Look what I just made for the new aquarium!
01:58What about our shell?
02:00Your shell, DA.
02:02I decided to make this treasure chest for our coral reef and I see the perfect spot for it.
02:09But Wanda, we were supposed to make something together.
02:14Ms. Frizzle said everything we put into the reef had to be done by partners.
02:19So, I thought of it and I made it!
02:24What better partnership is there?
02:28What's that?
02:34Ms. Frizzle!
02:36Oh, good morning class!
02:38My, my!
02:39Look at all these wonderful things in the aquarium!
02:42Oh!
02:43And a treasure chest!
02:45Do you like it?
02:46I made it myself!
02:47Even though we were supposed to make something together!
02:50But you know I work better alone!
02:53Hmm, your treasure chest reminds me of something!
02:56Don't go away!
03:02Ah!
03:02Here it is!
03:04My great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great,
03:10great, great, great, great grandfather Redbeard's treasure map!
03:13Redbeard?
03:14He was the pirate in the family!
03:16A long, long time ago, of course!
03:19You had a real pirate in your family?
03:22Why not?
03:23This map's been in the family for centuries!
03:26Wow!
03:27A real map of a real place!
03:30Then this must be a real coral reef!
03:32And the treasure must be real, too!
03:35Is it, Ms. Frizzle?
03:36Well, Wanda, there's only one way to find out!
03:39To the bus!
03:41To the bus!
03:49As my great-grandma told me, Redbeard was no ordinary pirate!
03:54Why am I not surprised?
03:57Instead of making his victims walk the plank, he took them along on adventures in his pirate ship!
04:04You mean he took people on field trips, too?
04:07Oh, yes!
04:09They went everywhere and anywhere!
04:12No way!
04:13He must have robbed and plundered like a normal pirate because he left a treasure!
04:17We don't know that for sure, Wanda!
04:20All we've got is a map!
04:21And according to that map, we're here!
04:26Coral Reef Ho!
04:28Drop anchor!
04:39Coral Reef, where?
04:41Good question, Ralphie, and I'm going to answer it!
04:45Partners, everyone!
04:46Two by two, please!
04:48Partners?
04:49Yes, you know, like Keisha and Ralphie, Tim and Carlos, Phoebe and Arnold, and you and me!
04:57I don't need a partner!
04:59I'm a pirate!
05:01Not a Weasley wimp!
05:02Ah, but as old Redbeard probably used to say,
05:05Go into the sea without a partner, matey, and you can get into deep trouble!
05:12Ready, partner?
05:14Yeah, but I still don't know why!
05:17You'll need the map, Wanda!
05:19And don't worry, it's waterproof!
05:21Thanks, Miss Frizzle!
05:23To the treasure!
05:32Woohoo!
05:50Is this it?
05:51Is this where the treasure is?
05:54It doesn't look anything like our aquarium!
05:57Yeah, where are all the fish?
06:01According to my research, there's not much food and no shelter for fish in deep ocean water.
06:07But there are lots of different kinds of fish living in a coral reef.
06:10So where's the reef?
06:11All I see is a lot of deep water.
06:16According to this treasure map...
06:19Whoa!
06:21Everything!
06:22Look at that!
06:25Look at the size of the fish!
06:29Now we're talking coral reef!
06:32And now we're talking fish!
06:36But are we talking treasure?
06:38Wanda, wait for me!
06:40Hurry up, D.A.
06:41Hey!
06:43Partners...
06:43They slow you down!
06:46Wanda, wait for me!
06:48What's that?
06:50It looks like an old chain!
06:53And it's got a pirate's mark on it!
06:56Looky, looky, look!
06:57That chain is the dotted line on the map!
07:00See?
07:01It leads to the treasure.
07:02I think it goes somewhere over there!
07:06Not so fast, Wanda!
07:08We've gotta stick together!
07:10We're partners, remember?
07:12What good did a partner ever do anyone anyway?
07:16Good question, Wanda!
07:19Liz!
07:23Oh no!
07:25Wait!
07:25I take back the question!
07:32Oh no!
07:34Me and my big mouth!
07:46How am I gonna find the treasure now?
07:48I guess we'll just have to wait and see, Wanda!
07:52Ooh, I've never been a sea anemone before!
07:55Sea anemone?
07:56Is that what we are?
07:58According to my research, a sea anemone is a marine animal which looks like a plant!
08:04Yeah, looks like a plant!
08:07And acts like a plant!
08:09Yeah!
08:09We can't exactly move from one place to another!
08:12But you get a good view of the fish from here!
08:17Whoops!
08:18Not enough food for two!
08:20Okay, so you're seeing enemies, but what are the rest of us, Ms. Grizzle?
08:24You're hermit crabs, Arnold!
08:27Hermit crabs?
08:28Sure, why not?
08:29Seems safe enough!
08:31Nice, hard shell!
08:34Hey, look!
08:36A rock!
08:39Yikes!
08:40That rock was a fish!
08:41And it ate that other fish!
08:43What kind of a place is this?
08:46A crowded one, Arn!
08:47Ah, the kind of place where you either eat or get eaten!
08:51A place where it's every critter for herself!
08:54But how am I going to get to the treasure when I can barely move?
08:58Well, since I'm a crab, and crabs can walk, I'll just follow the chains!
09:04Aren't you glad you have a partner now, Wanda?
09:07Yes!
09:08Whoa!
09:11What's going on?
09:14Don't look now, but I think it's jail time!
09:17I knew I should have stayed home today!
09:21Octopus!
09:28Oh, no!
09:31Over here, Arnold!
09:37Nobody seems to want to swim near a sea anemones!
09:41That's because we sting!
09:46Lucky you, Feet!
09:47That means they leave you alone and won't eat you!
09:50So if we stay close enough to you, they won't eat us either!
09:55Hey, D.A., this is bad enough as it is without you pushing me around!
09:59Hey, guys!
10:00Look at what that real hermit crab's doing!
10:06Why would a crab want a sea anemone on its head?
10:11For protection, that's why!
10:13The sea anemones stung the octopus!
10:16Come on, let's see if it'll work for us!
10:26You know what, buddy? It's kind of nice being able to move!
10:31And I get to eat what you eat!
10:33And you give me protection!
10:35Now that's what I call a partnership!
10:37I just thought of something, D.A.
10:39If I get up on your shell,
10:42I'll protect you from the octopus and you can take me to the treasure!
10:48You got it, partner!
10:50To the treasure!
10:52Come on, partner!
10:53Faster!
11:01Hey, it worked! Your stinger scared him away!
11:05Nice one, Wanda!
11:07Way to go!
11:07You scared away the octopus!
11:09Yeah, okay, so that's the good news!
11:12How are we going to follow the chain through that teeny tiny space?
11:16Please!
11:16Now there's a question worth diving into, Wanda!
11:20Oh, leaves!
11:30Well, at least I can move now!
11:33What are we, Ms. Frizzle?
11:35We're pistol shrimp, Wanda!
11:37We live in burrows in the coral rubble!
11:40Can you dig it?
11:41You bet!
11:43Now I can dig a hole through here so we can get to the treasure!
11:48What about us, Ms. Frizzle?
11:49We're fish, and fish can't dig!
11:51You're right, Tim!
11:53You're a goby fish!
11:54A goby fish?
11:56Didn't I see a fish that looked like us getting eaten?
11:59Trying to find a place to hide!
12:02But where?
12:03His paws are great for digging!
12:06Better than a shovel any day!
12:08But I sure can't see very well!
12:11Even if I do find the treasure, I probably won't see it!
12:16Sh-sh-sh-shark!
12:17Hide!
12:20Hide? Where?
12:22There! There's no room!
12:23Do you see what I see?
12:25Hiding places!
12:27Move over, Wanda!
12:29D-ay!
12:30What are you doing?
12:31Hide! There's a-
12:33Wow! You're wrecking my tunnel!
12:35There won't be a tunnel if you get eaten by that shark!
12:39Sh-shark?
12:41Sh-shark!
12:46Whoa!
12:47Thanks for warning me, partner!
12:49I couldn't see that shark coming!
12:51Man, it's a good thing for us gobies that you shrimp dig places to hide and don't mind sharing!
12:56And it's a good thing for us shrimp that you gobies warn us when there's danger we can't see!
13:01Is it just me or our shrimp and gobies partners for a reason?
13:06Survival, Ralphie! Survival!
13:08Each one helps the other to live!
13:10Hey, you guys! Look!
13:13You won't believe it!
13:15What is it? What is it? I can't see!
13:18Hey!
13:19Wow!
13:20Awesome!
13:21Is it the treasure, D.A.?
13:22No, but I see where the chain goes!
13:26I'll check it out!
13:28Don't go without me! I'm your partner, remember?
13:32Oh! I need a partner who can get me safely to the treasure, Ms. Frizzle!
13:38Oh, Liz!
13:50What's this time?
13:54Yes! This is more like it!
13:57What's more like it?
13:59I know I'm a shark, but what are you?
14:02We're remoras, D.A.
14:04Fish with suction cups that attach themselves to sharks.
14:08So they can get a free ride, right, Ms. Frizzle?
14:11A free ride and a free meal! Wahoo!
14:17What do we sharks get out of this deal?
14:20Ooh, something's itching me!
14:22Maybe we get rid of these little critters stuck all over your skin!
14:29Mmm, tasty!
14:32Thanks, Ralphie!
14:33What a partner!
14:34Those guys were really starting to...
14:36bug me!
14:37Keisha!
14:41I guess these little crunchy guys are tasty for me, and bad for you!
14:47But, what I really think is that this twosome is ready to find the treasure!
14:52What do you say, partner?
14:54I say not if we find it first! Go, Tim!
14:57Oh, yeah? Hang on, Wanda!
15:05Hey! What's wrong with the reef over here?
15:09It looks almost... dead!
15:12Never mind that!
15:13The treasure's in there! Let's get it!
15:16I, uh, I don't like the look of this place, Wanda!
15:21Yay! It's the treasure!
15:31Let me help! I'm bigger and stronger!
15:35Grrr!
15:38Grrr!
15:39Now we're talking partnership!
15:46Oh, no!
15:59Wanda, yay! Are you alright?
16:07We found it! We found the treasure!
16:10But when we pulled it out, look what happened.
16:15A big piece of the reef broke off.
16:18And now the treasure's underneath all the stuff.
16:21If you ask me, this whole part of the reef looks pretty sick.
16:26It's lost its color, too.
16:28Could something be wrong with it?
16:30I think that's a question we can build on, Dora the Ant.
16:34Don't you, Liz?
16:43What do you know? We're humans again.
16:46All the better to use your mega magnifiers, my dears.
16:52Now I know why they say the reef is alive.
16:55Look, it's made of little animals.
16:58Boingo, Carlos.
17:00Little animals called polyps.
17:03The coral reef is a limestone skeleton built by these polyps.
17:07And they're building new coral.
17:10Hold on.
17:12I think these polyps over here have something the ones in the sick part don't have.
17:16You're right, Tim.
17:18Each polyp has something inside it.
17:21And that stuff is algae.
17:23Algae?
17:24You mean like the scum I got on my shoe when I stepped in the pond?
17:28Wait a minute.
17:29Wait a minute!
17:31This whole day has been about partners working together, right?
17:35Right.
17:36First we were hermit crabs and sea anemones.
17:38The sea anemones protected the crabs.
17:41And the crabs moved the sea anemones around.
17:44They're partners!
17:46And then we were pistol shrimp and goby fish.
17:50The shrimp dug hiding places that helped protect the gobies.
17:53While the goby fish kept an eye out for trouble for both of them.
17:57Hydeners!
17:58And don't forget the sharks and remoras.
18:01Hydeners!
18:02Where critters meet to eat, it's sometimes better to cooperate than to compete.
18:08So, do coral polyps get something from the algae?
18:12Are they partners too?
18:15Righteously reasoned, Wanda.
18:16Since algae is a plant, it makes its own food from sunlight.
18:20It gives off wasps, which help the polyps make the reef.
18:24Cool!
18:25So, if the algae helps the polyps build reefs, what did the algae get out of it?
18:30If you ask me, the algae get a nice, safe place to live, away from these hungry fish.
18:37Oh, fantastically figured, Phoebe.
18:40A partnership which is good for both partners is a partnership that lasts.
18:45So, how come these polyps on the sick part of the reef don't have any algae partners?
18:50Maybe they're just being silly, like I was.
18:53Hey, polyps, take it from me.
18:56Sometimes it's better to work with a partner.
18:59Really, trust me on this one.
19:02I don't think they can hear you, Wanda.
19:04According to my research, if the water where coral lives gets polluted,
19:09the polyps get rid of their algae partners.
19:12But why would the water be polluted over here?
19:15And not the water over there.
19:17The only thing about this place that's different is,
19:21this is where I found...
19:23The treasure!
19:33This chest is made of some kind of metal.
19:37Hmm, looks like copper to me.
19:40Redbeard knew many things, but he didn't know about pollution.
19:43You mean, Redbeard's treasure chest could be polluting the reef, Ms. Frizzle?
19:48It could indeed, Keisha.
19:50Well then, let's remove the source of the pollution.
19:54Hit it, Liz!
20:04Now let's clean up this place!
20:07Wanda, what are you doing?
20:09Trying to get some clean water in here to give these polyps a chance.
20:13Good idea!
20:16Whoa!
20:18Way to go, Puss!
20:19It's working!
20:21These polyps just took in some algae.
20:24And they're starting to build coral again.
20:29The partnership is working!
20:31But won't it take forever for these polyps to build up the reef again?
20:35Never say forever, D.A.
20:38Normally it would take hundreds of years.
20:40But I think today we'll speed up the process a little.
20:43Take it away, Liz!
21:04Take it away, Liz!
21:17Careful!
21:20Easy does it!
21:26So, who's going to open it?
21:36What is it?
21:37It's a model of his ship!
21:40Cool!
21:41There he is!
21:43Great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great!
21:50Grandfather, Redbeard!
21:52Oh, little did he know his treasure chest would one day hurt the reef.
21:55If he were here, he'd thank you all for finding it and pulling it out.
21:59Right, Redbeard?
22:05What do you think this is?
22:07It looks like some kind of handle.
22:10Why don't you pull it?
22:21Well, what do you know?
22:23It's an MSG.
22:25A what?
22:26A magic Spanish galleon.
22:29I told you Redbeard was no ordinary pirate.
22:42Is this the magic school bus?
22:43Is this the magic school bus?
22:45Magic school bus?
22:46Magic school bus?
22:47Don't you mean magic school bus?
22:48Magic school bus?
22:50Magic school bus?
22:51Magic school bus?
22:52I want the magic school bus!
22:54I want the magic school bus!
23:04Magic School Bus, the producer is speaking.
23:07Hi, I just watched your show on coral reefs and thought it was terrific.
23:11But I have a couple of questions on this partnership thing.
23:15Fire away, buddy.
23:16Is it true that most animals have partners like the ones you showed?
23:21Well, partnerships are a little unusual.
23:23That's why they're so interesting.
23:25Most of the time, animals compete with each other for things like space, mate, and most often food.
23:32Partnerships happen when each animal partner benefits the other and each does better as a result.
23:38And coral reefs are a good place to see that happening.
23:41But some animals just benefit from other animals without giving back, right?
23:46Absolutely.
23:47Take the coral reef crab, for example.
23:50It lives under the spines of the black sea urchin.
23:53Now, the urchin doesn't get anything out of it, but the crab gets some well-needed protection.
23:58Cool.
23:59Okay, now tell me the truth.
24:01Is a coral reef really alive?
24:04You bet it is, pal.
24:06The hard coral is part of the shell-like home of the polyps.
24:10And millions of polyps live together building the reef year after year.
24:14Do reefs really get sick like you showed?
24:18Unfortunately, they do, for lots of different reasons, including pollution and other human
24:23activities that harm reefs and the animals that live in them.
24:27Speaking of animals, aren't the ones that cooperate just being nice to each other?
24:32Sorry.
24:33Animals aren't nice, except maybe to their babies.
24:36In fact, they tend to eat each other a lot.
24:40Thanks for calling, and thanks for your interest in coral reefs.
24:43Hey, coral reefs are one of the world's great treasures.
24:47We need to do what we can to protect them.
24:50You got that right, partner.
24:55Aren't you going to share your lunch, partner?
25:00Uh, never mind.
25:10Surfing on a sine wave
25:12Swinging through the stars
25:14Take a left and your intestine
25:16Take your second right back, Mars
25:18I'm a magic school bus
25:20Affigate a nostril
25:21I'm a magic school bus
25:24Make a plate and two
25:25Big best
25:26On our magic school bus
25:28Rock the river of lava
25:30On the magic school bus
25:32Such a fine thing to do
25:34So strap your bones right to the seat
25:37Come on in and don't be shy
25:39Just to make your day complete
25:41You might get baked into a pie
25:43On the magic school bus
25:45Stuff inside, it's a wild ride
25:48Come on
25:49Right on the magic school bus
25:51It's a wild ride
25:51I'll be happy now
25:52Oh my god
25:53I'll be happy now
25:53I'm not sure what you're going to do
