00:09We're retreating to the warm sand beaches of Oak Island, North Carolina.
00:13This barrier island offers the best of both worlds, with ocean waves on one side and face-side tranquility on
00:20the other.
00:21Waterfront property here can blow past two million dollars, but this family is ready to roll up their sleeves
00:26and put in the work to create their own slice of paradise for a fraction of the cost.
00:32Get ready for a beachfront bargain hunt, Renovation.
00:48Ooh, are we going to catch some big crabs? Oh, yeah.
00:51Can you carry the net? Oh, yeah.
00:52You carry it, alright?
00:53Yeah.
00:56Wow, Bo, you're good at carrying that.
00:58Oh, good job, Bo.
01:00Careful.
01:01I'm Shane.
01:02And I'm Elise, and we're looking for a beach house in Oak Island, North Carolina.
01:09Alright, Bo, can you grab one?
01:11Go grab a shrimp.
01:12They're slimy. They're yucky.
01:14Ooh, that's a good one.
01:15Think the Crabbies will like that one?
01:17Yeah, they'll like it.
01:18We currently live in Southern Pines, North Carolina, which is about two hours from here.
01:24We live on ten acres, and we have our two little boys, Indy, who's eight, and then we have Bo,
01:30who's four years old.
01:31They're a lot of fun.
01:32Yeah, they're very adventurous.
01:34Both of our boys love the water.
01:36They keep us on our toes, but they're a blast.
01:39Just pull it fast.
01:40There you go.
01:41Fast, fast, fast. Indy, pull, pull.
01:43Wow, we caught one!
01:45Good job, bud.
01:45That's a little guy.
01:46That's a little one.
01:47You guys want to pick it up?
01:48I spent most of my life in Utah, which we're not near an ocean, so I've always just loved the
01:54idea of going to North Carolina, especially to the coast.
01:57You get the beachy feel, but it's not too crowded.
02:00I've always loved being close to the water.
02:02I grew up in Louisiana.
02:03We had two ponds, and I spent pretty much all day, every day out fishing and swimming.
02:11Oak Island is an island on the south side of the North Carolina state, right near the South Carolina border,
02:17in between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intercoastal Waterway.
02:20It's facing directly south, so you're able to see the sunrise and the sunset, which we absolutely love.
02:26You have parks, you have lots of local restaurants, definitely a place where people come for a vacation, but it
02:33still has a community feel.
02:35It's just the perfect retreat from the world.
02:37The first time we came to Oak Island, Indy was just a little, tiny baby.
02:43You were strapped to my chest, and we were fishing.
02:45I know that picture.
02:46You were holding onto the fishing pole.
02:47We loved it so much.
02:49That was our first taste of North Carolina.
02:51While we're looking at homes, we really want to have one that has at least three bedrooms, two bathrooms.
02:56We want a nice backyard area, just so the kids can play.
03:01Something that's pretty close to the Intercoastal Waterway, still a really short bike ride or walk to the beach.
03:06We're definitely going to rent it out during the high demand months, and then we're going to spend a lot
03:11of time here, though, during the off season, which we actually love.
03:15What would you want in a beach house, buddy?
03:17A first tank.
03:18Oh, yeah.
03:19And I want a pet hermit crab.
03:22We don't want to spend more than $4.50 on a house.
03:24That includes all the renovations.
03:26In the price range we're looking, we know that we're probably going to have to find something that's a little
03:30bit of a fixer-upper.
03:31We've done some small projects, you know, on the farm for our animals, but it's a little scary to think
03:37about taking on a big old project.
03:39But at the same time, it's exciting to learn something new.
03:43I want people to feel like they're on vacation when they get there and that it's like just a beautiful,
03:48peaceful space.
03:49And I think we can do that.
03:51Mom, teamwork makes the dream work.
03:53Are you and Beau a good team?
03:54Yeah.
03:54Yeah.
03:55Good job, guys.
03:56You guys are a good team.
04:01See more.
04:01See more.
04:01See more.
04:02See more.
04:04Okay, so the first home we're going to go look at, Seashell Cottage.
04:08It's four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and it's 1,600 square feet.
04:16And now it's listed at 415.
04:20Wow.
04:22But they recently dropped it, so they might even be willing to go lower.
04:27That's hard to find a house at that price that's that big around here.
04:34Makes me worry or wonder if something is weird with it.
04:38Some major damage that we will find, but it's on the quieter side of the island nearby the intercoastal waterway.
04:47How far is it?
04:48Like a block or two away.
04:50That's pretty good.
04:51Yeah.
04:53Oh, here we are.
04:54Oh, I love all the trees.
04:56I love the houses around it.
04:58They're super cute and well-cut.
05:00Yeah, this is a really nice neighborhood.
05:07Nice wooden fence.
05:08Yeah, I like the fence.
05:10That's nice for kids and if we have our dog with us.
05:14I think there's a lot of potential.
05:15I mean, this is a pretty big front yard.
05:17Yeah, big lot.
05:17There's a lot we can do with it.
05:19I'm not sure if I really like the screened-in porch.
05:22I feel like that kind of just, it looks like it makes it like darker.
05:27Yeah, it does make it darker.
05:29I don't know.
05:29I think I would probably want to get rid of the screened-in porch just to open it up a
05:33little more.
05:34Lead the way.
05:37Oh, wow.
05:37Well, I like how big it is.
05:40It just seems really dark, like a little bit suffocating almost.
05:45Yeah, I definitely think it's dark.
05:47It feels kind of like a quaint cabin in the woods, which, I mean, is cool, but a little different
05:51from what I was looking for.
05:53Yeah.
05:53Definitely would need to replace that so you don't hit your head on the head.
05:57Yeah, it looks like I could, yep.
06:00Kitchen-wise, I like the space, like I like the layout and the size of it.
06:04I feel like we would need to kind of redo the whole thing, though.
06:08I agree with you.
06:09I think you'd want something a little more vibrant, a little more modern, I would imagine.
06:13Yeah.
06:13Well, should we see the rooms?
06:15I think there's two bedrooms down here.
06:19This is a pretty nice big room.
06:21Yeah.
06:22You'd put one or two beds in here, probably, which would make it great for families if we have people
06:26visiting us or if we're renting it out.
06:29Yeah.
06:30Should we look at the bathroom?
06:31Yeah.
06:33All right.
06:34Looks like this kind of connects to another bedroom.
06:37Definitely, I feel like this would need to all be redone.
06:41It's not a fan of the tile.
06:44I think the tile's nice.
06:44What about this tile?
06:46No, I like the flooring.
06:47The flooring's okay, but the tile in the shower.
06:50Yeah, I do feel like I'm a little bit kind of like the pool shower vibe, you know?
06:55Yeah.
06:55A little bit on the walls and stuff.
06:57Yeah.
06:57But the space, the size is good.
07:00The layout's good.
07:01Yeah, it is good.
07:01This is big.
07:03Yeah, this room's about the same size as the other room, I think.
07:06I feel like maybe it's a little bigger.
07:07I like the laminate quite a bit too.
07:09Yeah, I like the color.
07:12All right.
07:12Well, should we head check out the two rooms upstairs?
07:18This is a cute room.
07:20I like how much light it gets.
07:23It seems so much brighter.
07:24This could be an awesome, like, kids' room.
07:27Should we check it out in the bathroom?
07:28Yeah, let's see it.
07:31Oh, yeah.
07:32Yeah, this is fun.
07:34I feel like this would be a pretty quick fix.
07:37Definitely do a new vanity, new mirror, new light fixture.
07:42I would love if we had it in the budget to do, like, a new tub
07:46and to do, like, some fun tiling all the way up to the ceiling.
07:50I think that would be awesome.
07:51I mean, we got a lot of stuff adding up.
07:53I think it's not bad as it is, if we're being honest.
07:57Right.
07:57Yeah, let's go.
07:58Should we go on downstairs and check out the backyard?
08:01Yeah, let's go.
08:05Oh, yeah, this is a pretty big space.
08:07Yeah, I feel like this is a really fun hangout area.
08:10Don't love that there's gravel.
08:12Looks like they use this as, like, a parking area.
08:14I would try to get some grass or something.
08:16Yeah, for the kids.
08:17Yeah, just a fun space to be.
08:19You know, it's listed at 415.
08:22Maybe we can negotiate with them a little bit.
08:24But even then, this would stretch us a little bit.
08:28Definitely a lot to think about.
08:36So, the next house we're going to go check out, Shore Escape.
08:40It's three bedrooms, two bathrooms, listed for 407 and just over a thousand square feet.
08:48It's a nice price point.
08:50And it's good that it has three bedrooms.
08:52I think this side of the island, it's by Veterans Park.
08:55Oh, that's a really cool area, actually.
08:58Yeah.
08:58So, that's a great place to go fishing and to hang out.
09:01Oh, yeah.
09:03Oh, here we are.
09:04Oh, I love all the trees.
09:06Yeah, it's kind of a cute approach.
09:08Yeah.
09:08Nice driveway.
09:09I like that there's the gate to keep it nice and secure.
09:12Looks like a cute little beach cottage.
09:13I love the houses around it.
09:15They're super cute and well-kept.
09:17Yeah, this is a really nice neighborhood.
09:19Check out the flowers, too.
09:24I think it's a great yard.
09:26I love the fence around it.
09:28It just has a lot of good curb appeal.
09:30You want to go check it out?
09:31Yeah.
09:45Cute.
09:46Yeah, this is cute.
09:48I don't know how I feel about the blue floor, but...
09:50Yeah, I don't love the blue.
09:51Yeah, but definitely cute.
09:53I'm excited to see what's inside.
09:56Oh, this is a nice little living room.
09:58Yeah, I like the flooring.
09:59I feel like this one wouldn't need a whole lot of work, this room.
10:03Maybe just change out the fan.
10:05Probably put a TV there and then a couch against that window
10:08and against that window.
10:11So it looks like this is the dining area, which, again, is not very big.
10:16It's a nice open space, but definitely you'd be far-stretched
10:19to put a table that seats six people in here.
10:22Right, so this looks like the kitchen area.
10:24It's definitely dated.
10:26I think we would need to do all new appliances, new countertops.
10:30Yeah, put some updated cabinets, maybe go all the way up to the ceiling as well.
10:35Looks like we have a bedroom over here.
10:39Might be the primary.
10:40There's a bathroom right off of it.
10:42I like the feel of this bedroom.
10:44Yeah.
10:44The floor is really nice and solid.
10:46It's really light.
10:48A lot of natural light in here, I've noticed.
10:50Yeah.
10:50I love the view.
10:52Yeah.
10:53Of the backyard.
10:56This vanity has definitely seen better days.
10:59Yeah, I think we would have to change everything.
11:02New flooring, new vanity, this whole shower area.
11:06But the nice thing is with it being at the lower end of our budget,
11:11is we would be able to do that no problem.
11:12Yeah.
11:16So this is one of the bedrooms.
11:18It's kind of small.
11:19Yeah, this is really tiny.
11:21Maybe we could make the room from like some bunk beds or something.
11:25Yeah.
11:29And here's the second bathroom.
11:31It's a lot bigger.
11:32Yeah, this is bigger.
11:34Definitely, I think we just have to redo the whole space.
11:37I agree.
11:38I think we want to put a tub in, put some tile up.
11:40Right.
11:41Let's go see the backyard.
11:43Yeah.
11:44Oh, I like this.
11:46Yeah, this is really nice.
11:47Oh, and they have a outdoor shower.
11:50That's really nice.
11:51That's super convenient.
11:53I feel like this could have a big seating area, especially in the inside.
11:56There's not a whole lot of seating space.
11:58So this could kind of be like an extension of the dining room.
12:02Yeah, I really like the feel of this yard.
12:04Me too.
12:04So what do you think about the place?
12:06I do worry about just the size.
12:09But it is $407,000.
12:11Yeah.
12:11So, I mean, that's a pretty good price point.
12:13And it's cute.
12:14Like, I love how it looks on the outside.
12:15I think it has really good curb appeal.
12:18Yeah.
12:18That's a plus.
12:22All right.
12:23Where to now?
12:24This next one is called Sandy Retreats, and it's three bedrooms, two bathrooms.
12:32It's 1,000 square feet, and this one is listed at the lowest price for $3799.
12:38That is a really good deal.
12:39And it's pretty close to the beach.
12:41The only thing that I'm really worried about is it's right off of a super busy road.
12:46Yeah, I hear you on that.
12:52Oh, yeah.
12:53So, yellow, white.
12:54It looks like you have a big sunroom.
12:56Definitely a unique design on this one, but I'm excited to check it out.
13:04I like how it's right by the beach.
13:06Yeah, the beach is just right down that road.
13:08Great location.
13:10After you.
13:11Thanks.
13:13Nice.
13:14It's really big.
13:16Looks like it's a little older.
13:17I mean, this band definitely is kind of rusting.
13:20Yeah.
13:20And I like the idea of it, but I feel like with the traffic, it's not exactly relaxing like you
13:26would want a sunroom to be.
13:29I like the size.
13:30I feel like it's a good sized living room.
13:33We would definitely want to do a lot of updates, get rid of the popcorn ceiling, repaint it, new flooring.
13:40It is big and open though, like you mentioned.
13:43So this kitchen is very tiny.
13:46I don't feel like it could fit all of us.
13:50We could maybe potentially look at expanding it.
13:53We would have the money to do that with the price point of this home.
13:58That would be exciting to think about.
14:00Yeah.
14:01Looks like we have a bedroom over here.
14:04Oh, nice.
14:05They got bunk beds set up in here.
14:06Yeah.
14:07I mean, it's pretty tiny.
14:09I feel like you could fit bunk beds in this room and that's about it.
14:13And then I'm not sure about the ceiling.
14:15Is that tile?
14:16No.
14:17I don't know.
14:18We would want to change the texture of the ceiling.
14:23Here's the middle room.
14:24I think this is a good sized room.
14:26Yeah.
14:26Definitely works as a good guest room if we have people coming out with us.
14:31Here's the third room.
14:32Maybe it's the primary room?
14:35Yeah, I can't tell.
14:36Oh, actually, I don't know.
14:37Looks like there's a laundry room coming off of this one, which is interesting.
14:41Yeah, it's nice to have a separate space to do laundry, but I do worry about people having to go
14:47through the primary bedroom to do their laundry.
14:50I think that could get old really fast.
14:52It looks like the primary bathroom is off of the laundry room.
14:57We would have to redo the whole thing, but we'd have the budget to do that.
15:02Let's see what's behind this door.
15:10Oh, this leads to, it looks like an outdoor shower.
15:14Interesting.
15:15Okay.
15:15Yeah, so shower off in here.
15:18This is good sized.
15:19Yeah, I mean, it's kind of a must have if you're going to be spending a lot of time at
15:23the beach.
15:24It is nice.
15:24Here, let's walk around and see what's in the backyard.
15:28This is a really nice looking yard.
15:30I know, I love the trees.
15:31Yeah, there's a nice picnic table underneath that tree.
15:35It really has a peaceful feel, and I do like the way it looks out here.
15:39I think my favorite thing about this house is just how close it is to the beach and the price
15:44point.
15:44I feel like with that much money, we could potentially even make it bigger.
15:50We can just do a lot.
15:52And still come in at our budget.
15:54Well, I definitely think we have a lot to think about.
15:57I think we saw three great options, and I'm excited to see what we end up choosing.
16:02Yeah, it's exciting stuff.
16:11We were looking for a place that didn't require a lot of structural work, and it was close to the
16:15beach, also close to the waterway.
16:18For Shore Escape, we loved the curb appeal, loved the location, loved the landscape, but it was really small.
16:26Yeah, it was.
16:27It was just too tiny.
16:28Sandy Retreats was definitely the closest to the beach, but it was really dated.
16:33It would take a lot of work, and the biggest con for me was just being right off that busy
16:37road.
16:38So we decided to go with Seashell Cottage, and we're so excited because we feel like it has room for
16:44our family to grow,
16:45and I think it'll be a great rental property.
16:48There's a lot of potential.
16:49Yeah, we were able to negotiate and get it at a great price at $400,000, and it's going to
16:54require some work.
16:55So that leaves us $50,000 for renovations.
16:58We're really excited to roll up our sleeves and get to work.
17:01I love the idea of keeping the fence, but painting it a bright white color and maybe planting some flowers
17:08around it.
17:09Revamping the landscaping.
17:11Yeah.
17:12Up the curb appeal a ton.
17:13I would love to take the pathway and make it wider and have it go between these two trees leading
17:19up to the front door.
17:20Oh, yeah.
17:22And the screen and porch, like we talked about, it's really cool, but the way it's built right now, it
17:27kind of creates a lot of shadows and makes it a little less vibrant than what we were talking about.
17:32So once that's cleared out and you have some big, nice white columns, it's really going to brighten up the
17:38porch and give it that feel that you want.
17:40Yeah.
17:40I would love to either get a new door or even paint this door a fun coastal blue color and
17:47then do shutters on each of the windows to match.
17:50Maybe some hanging ferns, a bigger porch swing, and maybe like some rocking chairs.
17:56Just a really inviting place where families want to come and hang out.
18:00Yeah.
18:00And all those things, you know, with a little bit of elbow grease, really shouldn't break the budget.
18:06So.
18:07No, I think it's very doable.
18:11Home, sweet home.
18:13Here it is.
18:15Want me to take that?
18:16Yeah, thanks.
18:17So I'm thinking for this space, the kitchen is definitely the biggest and most expensive project.
18:24I love the idea of a white kitchen in a beach house.
18:27So I think let's do white cabinets.
18:29We want to extend the cabinets right over the fridge.
18:32There's a little bit of wall here that we're going to need to take out.
18:36And then I would love to do quartz countertops.
18:39Definitely get rid of that backsplash and get something new.
18:42Maybe a subway tile.
18:44We got our work cut out for us in the kitchen.
18:46But I think you can do it.
18:48I don't think it'll be too hard.
18:49Hopefully.
18:49We can do it.
18:50You're going to help me, right?
18:53Next up, we have the primary bathroom.
18:55Ripping out all the tile off the walls.
18:58Replace all the light fixtures in here.
19:00We're going to redo the vanities.
19:02Two sinks.
19:03Yeah.
19:04We're going to take out all the old tile in the shower and completely redo the shower as well.
19:10I think this is going to be a really great room when we're done with it.
19:15All right.
19:15And for the upstairs bathroom.
19:18It's probably the third biggest project, isn't it?
19:20Yeah, the bathrooms are kind of big.
19:22I think with this room, we're just going to want to do a new vanity, new mirror, new light fixtures,
19:30get a new tub, and then do tiling up to the ceiling.
19:34If we're smart with our money and the other spaces, I think we can have enough to make this a
19:38really good bathroom.
19:39It would make a big difference.
19:41Uh-huh.
19:41We are going to be doing most of the renovations.
19:44Yeah, I'm a little nervous.
19:45I don't have a great track record with that.
19:48I once lit my glove on fire in shop class in eighth grade, so ever since then, I don't do
19:54that.
19:55Normally, I'll come up with, like, the design, and then Shane does most of the building.
19:59So I'll probably be there for moral support when they pull out the big, big power tools.
20:04But I think we might recruit some help from friends and family, but we're going to attempt to do it
20:10ourselves.
20:11So it'll be an adventure.
20:13We can stay within $50,000.
20:24We can pop the trim off and start to remove these cabinets.
20:29So today's our first day working on the house.
20:31Shane's brother, Mark, is here.
20:32So with that extra manpower, we're going to try and take down some of the upper cabinets while we have
20:38that strength.
20:40There it is.
20:41Woo!
20:43Good job.
20:45Freedom.
20:47Yeah.
20:51I mean, that's easier than going stone by stone.
20:53It's really cool as we're doing this demo to kind of see all the different phases this house has been
20:59on.
21:00When we pull back the cabinets, there's wood paneling that definitely gives, like, a 70s, 80s aesthetic.
21:06When we pulled off the tile backsplash, there was a whole other backsplash.
21:11And it's just neat to see all these layers come off and to know that we'll be able to put
21:17our mark on the house and make it our own.
21:19Check this out.
21:21Oh, my goodness.
21:22Yeah.
21:22They must have had, at some point when this was built, probably when it was originally built, there was an
21:28oven hood here, I would think.
21:30And that probably was the wire to the light on the hood.
21:33I don't think it's up to code to just have this here like it is.
21:38I think we need to take a step back.
21:40We can't place an order for cabinets until we decide exactly what we're going to do with this space.
21:44Because you were thinking we were going to have, like, shelves here, right?
21:48Yeah, I wanted to do, like, fun tiling and then some cute little floating shelves.
21:53You know, there's one thing we might be able to do.
21:56Let's have an electrician come and scope it out, but I wonder if we could somehow put a window.
22:01Yeah.
22:01Because it's already, I mean, there's clearly nothing here.
22:03I wonder if we could extend it up, maybe widen it just a little bit and have a little window
22:07above the sink and get some more natural light in here.
22:09Yeah, that would be great.
22:12With that open flap, you could have bugs coming in there.
22:15You have humidity.
22:16You have all types of things just hitting the back of your cabinets without even knowing it.
22:21So we're going to have to rethink completely what our design was for that space.
22:37Today we are working on painting the doors.
22:40You're going to help me?
22:42We're going to prime this.
22:44So that means we've got to put some stuff on it and then we'll paint it blue, okay?
22:47We have our boys helping us, so it should be exciting.
22:52I'll do brush.
22:53Nice and slow.
22:54Okay.
22:55Just a little bit.
22:58Whoa, wow.
23:00Good job.
23:02I'll help you spread it, okay?
23:04So the boys and I were debating on a few colors for the door and we ended up choosing blue
23:10just because throughout the house we have a lot of blue accents and it really gives that beachy, coastal feel
23:16that we want.
23:17Oh, wow.
23:19Good job, Beau boy.
23:21Just a little.
23:23Hopefully he'll have fun memories when he sees that blue door of painting it with his mom, so.
23:28Wow, Beau and Ralphie helping.
23:31This is going to be the best looking door in the whole island, huh?
23:45We had some work to get done, so I drove out by myself while the kids stayed at home with
23:49Elise.
23:50I got to finish all the popcorn ceiling removal and then get as much of the painting done as I
23:55can.
23:56The main thing is to make sure you have enough air pumped into it so that you keep a good
24:02pressure.
24:03First, you got to get it wet so it can come off easier without getting a bunch of dust and
24:08powder everywhere and it's a lot easier to scrape.
24:11You see because it's wet, it all just falls right off.
24:16This is messy work.
24:17I mean, look at me.
24:19I'm absolutely covered.
24:20I got it in my eyes and my nose even though I was wearing a mask, but you got to
24:24get it done and at the end of the day, we're saving a lot of money by doing it ourselves.
24:28And even though it's gritty, yucky, nasty stuff, there's a sense of satisfaction.
24:39I only have my really cool outdoor shades.
24:42I didn't bring the safety glasses that are white or clear.
24:45So, should we start going?
24:47Yeah, you want to...
24:50Today, my brother Dennis and my brother Mark's come out to help me take out the bathrooms and retile, redo
24:57the shower downstairs.
25:01I've never done this before, that's why I got Dennis out here to help me.
25:04He's a contractor that has a lot of clients where he's done new bathrooms for and everything.
25:09We're going to take the toilet out and we'll just plug the hole with some cloths so that it doesn't
25:14get backed up, okay?
25:16I'm really happy with what we've been able to accomplish, having me, Mark, and Dennis all work at the same
25:20time.
25:21We'll be able to redo that bathroom.
25:31The bathrooms are really dingy and gross right now and we don't have good lights in, so I thought let's
25:37take the tile outside so we can see it in more natural lighting.
25:41Okay.
25:42So we're going to do new tiling on the shower and the flooring upstairs and then new tile in the
25:49downstairs shower.
25:50This is the tile that I love the most and I for sure want to somehow incorporate it into the
25:56downstairs bathroom.
25:57I think it would really give us that like sophisticated spa feel while tying it into the beach because it
26:03looks fish scale like mermaid.
26:05That's like $16 per square foot.
26:08I know.
26:09And I've never tiled before.
26:11How am I going to put this and keep it in line?
26:14I feel like if we are wanting to have it be a vacation rental, we need to have something that'll
26:19set it apart.
26:20I'm open to using it.
26:22However, I don't want to use it for the entire shower.
26:25I think that would be overkill.
26:26We could use this white tile and then use that as an accent wall.
26:32That helps us get, you know, a little one extra person to stay each year.
26:36I think we've...
26:37I know we're going to get like reviews like love the tile in the bathroom, five stars.
26:42I hope so.
26:43That's what I'm betting on.
26:44I hope so.
26:45I hope so.
26:45For the shower tile upstairs in the kids room where we want that like playful childish feel.
26:52I love the idea of like creating a striped effect, almost like a beach towel.
26:57So I was thinking we could do white subway tile and then maybe like one of these blues for the
27:04stripes.
27:04Looking at these two blues, I think this looks a little bit more like a traditional beach towel.
27:10But this one's kind of got a pearly look and reminds me of the ocean a little bit.
27:14And price wise, these are all pretty similar.
27:17I do like how this one has like the details of the light and then the dark.
27:21I do see the beauty.
27:22So I'm on board.
27:24Now that we know what we want to do for the shower tile, let's look at the flooring for upstairs.
27:30We got this one here, really floral, pretty cool, unique pattern here.
27:34I don't know that that's going to work.
27:35Still really like it.
27:37But I also think this white hexagon is just like a classy, timeless look.
27:42And the hexagon shape is unique enough that it wouldn't be just like boring.
27:47I like that it's a little bit bigger, too, because that means a little bit less work for me when
27:52it comes to putting them all down.
27:53Yeah, so I think that's a good choice.
27:56Next up is to order the tile.
27:58And while that's shipping, you know, we're going to get going on the bathrooms and get everything framed up
28:03so that I can take the tile and just lay it all in downstairs and upstairs, probably similar timeframe.
28:09It's going to be really beautiful.
28:11Yeah, it'll be nice.
28:26Today I want to get a good amount of tile laid in the bathroom.
28:30These big white ones are a nice warm up.
28:32This back wall is going to be a smaller, more difficult tile.
28:36I want to get at least one wall completely done.
28:41The wall is not perfectly square, so I might have to cut this piece.
28:47The white subway tile for the bathroom shower is going to be a nice contrast to the smaller accent tile
28:53for the back wall that Elise picked out.
28:58Oh, yeah. All right.
29:00All in all, I'm really happy about the progress.
29:02I'm going to give the tile some time to dry in the downstairs bathroom.
29:06And then we put the vanity in and we put most of the trim in.
29:11So now I want to put some lights in there so we can see it.
29:14I think Elise is going to love the lights.
29:16She picked them out.
29:18She has a really good taste for design.
29:20And so I'm really excited to show them to her.
29:23Ta-da!
29:24It's a really good look.
29:25You know, there's still a lot of work to be done, but you can see the transformation take place and
29:29it's really exciting.
29:30Happy with the progress.
29:40It's a good looking porch.
29:41I mean, we liked it.
29:42We just want to change it from being woods to having more of a beach feel.
29:47When we first looked at the porch, we saw some areas that were getting pretty worn.
29:53And the more we thought about it, we loved sitting on there.
29:55We loved having the screens and everything.
29:57And we saw an opportunity to just really give it a facelift.
30:03I got my brother Mark here to help me and his son Isaac, my nephew.
30:07We're going to put siding on the inside of the porch.
30:10I've never done a screened-in porch and dealt with screens.
30:12So it's, you know, there's some learning.
30:17Nice.
30:20If you weighed 50 more pounds, you could have taken the whole thing out.
30:23It's probably good my wife wasn't here.
30:24She might have been nervous I was going to hurt myself.
30:30Still got a little bit of teenage boy in me that I got to let come out every now and
30:34then.
30:35Oh yeah, it's going to look great.
30:37We're going to be painting into the night, so I think we'll actually have all the painting done.
30:41So all that will be left after today is just to put up the new screens.
30:45And it should look like a totally new porch by the time we're done with it.
31:02I'm pumped because we're just going to completely redo the landscape.
31:06When we bought the house, the backyard was totally dirt.
31:10And the reason why is because you have these big oak trees.
31:12They block out the sun.
31:14And so it's really hard for grass to grow back here.
31:16We want to liven it up, make it look nice.
31:19So we chose to do gravel, have a nice fire pit, put some mulch around it to give a natural
31:24field.
31:26Have the beach smell of fresh mulch.
31:29Yes, sir.
31:32We decided to do mulch in the front yard just because it's lower maintenance.
31:36We have a lot of those big, beautiful oak trees.
31:39We really like the look of it.
31:41We wanted to set the flower bed apart from the rest of the yard, so we added some decorative rocks.
31:47And I feel like the rocks look really nice with the height ranges.
31:50For the walkway, we kind of changed the direction.
31:53We feel like it flows better now.
31:55We added some big stepping stones.
31:57And we just really love how it looks together.
32:08Crew's coming in today, pumped to have them do the kitchen.
32:11Me and my wife wanted to get this thing done quickly.
32:14And we were able to work out a good deal to hang cabinets, which is something we really wanted to
32:19do that I wasn't comfortable doing.
32:22With a hole in the wall next to the exposed wire, we put a window in to brighten things up.
32:27But putting the window in, there's lines back there.
32:31You know, luckily they got people who are certified and know how to move those around.
32:36One of the walls was about as wavy as the ocean, right?
32:39So they had to do some work to get the cabinets to sit straight.
32:42And then, you know, some of the cabinets were different depths or different widths.
32:45And they've been able to adjust on the fly.
32:47And I'm sure I would have hung it all and wondered, huh, why doesn't any of this line up like
32:51it's supposed to?
32:52But they're on top of it.
32:56I've been doing a lot of work yesterday and some today on both the bathrooms.
33:01I actually enjoy tiling quite a bit, but it's taken more time than I'd like it to.
33:05There's no working bath or shower right now because I'm tiling them.
33:09And so I got up and said, you know what, I'd really like a shower.
33:12So what I'm going to do is I'm going to go surf a little bit.
33:15Man, I got bit hard by something. I don't know if it was a shark or what.
33:20But I spent the morning in the care clinic getting my foot sewed back together.
33:25And wasn't really planning on tiling a bathroom after getting bit by a shark.
33:30But I still got to get this done.
33:32So I'm just going to work through the pain and make it happen.
33:4393?
33:4493 inches?
33:45Yeah, close enough.
33:46Alrighty.
33:47We're going to do a fun little accent wall in the boys room.
33:51We've taken the doors off the closet and we're turning that into like a little alcove where we're going to
33:56store toys and just make it kind of a fun space.
33:59We did the waves just because it is a beach house.
34:02And then we did pill and stick because that's the only wallpaper we've had experience with.
34:09Alright, you want to take over from here and I'll start cutting the next one.
34:13I might need you to be here for moral support for the first little night.
34:17It does start to bubble up a little bit.
34:21Oh my goodness.
34:22I don't know if I'm just not good at it, but I'm like making it all wrinkly.
34:26I wish maybe the wallpaper process went a little smoother, but you can't win them all.
34:32I think you're better at it than me.
34:44Today we got a crew coming in to install the new quartz countertops.
34:48We went with white quartz because it just matches the bright beach house vibe we're looking for.
34:58The kitchen looks great.
35:00It's come a long way.
35:01It's starting to look like a home again, which is really exciting.
35:06We're getting over the hump.
35:07What we have left is the bathrooms.
35:09We got some trim, some painting to do.
35:12Got to do a lot of touch-ups.
35:13But yeah, we're really getting closer.
35:23All right, let's decorate the sandpiper room.
35:26Well, the day has finally come where we've finished our renovations and our beach house is ready to go.
35:31Indy and Bo are here and we're just going to finish up a few things and then we're going to
35:36show my mom.
35:37I feel like everything has really come together exactly how I imagined it.
35:42It's actually better than I thought it would be.
35:44I think it's so beautiful, so peaceful, so clean looking, and I'm excited to come and make lots of memories
35:51here as a family.
35:54There it is.
35:55Hooray!
35:56Beautiful.
35:58All right, Bobo.
35:59Can you put the blue pillow over there, bud?
36:00Yours goes on the rocking chair, buddy.
36:02Oh, my goodness.
36:03I think Ami's going to love the porch.
36:05What do you guys think?
36:07Yeah.
36:08Ami!
36:09Is Ami here?
36:11Ami!
36:12Hey, guys!
36:13Ami!
36:14Come see the beach house.
36:16Well, the day has finally come where we have finished our beach house renovation.
36:21My mom's here to spend the week with us.
36:23I think she's going to be really surprised and impressed by everything we've done.
36:26I love it.
36:27So we added lots of beautiful hydrangeas, and then we painted the fence.
36:33This walkway is all new, too.
36:35It looks so fresh and just clean and bright.
36:38It turned out better than we were actually even thinking.
36:40Yeah.
36:41It's beautiful.
36:43Yeah.
36:43Okay, there we go.
36:44Do you like the play area?
36:46Yeah.
36:46Do you want to go play on it with Bobo?
36:48Yeah.
36:48All right, you guys go play.
36:50Let's go.
36:51I want to see.
36:52Yeah.
36:52Let's go in.
36:55So this is the screened-in porch, and Shane was the master of renovating this.
37:03We filled all the gaps, did new trim, put new siding.
37:07And we painted the shutters and then the door.
37:10No, it's so cozy and inviting.
37:12I'm very happy.
37:13Should we go check out the inside?
37:15Yes.
37:15I can't wait.
37:16I'm excited.
37:18So here it is.
37:20Wow.
37:21Elise.
37:21I know.
37:22Doesn't it look so good?
37:23It is gorgeous.
37:23Oh my goodness.
37:25I know.
37:25It doesn't even look like the same place.
37:27It was so dark.
37:28This is just so light and airy.
37:30I love it so much.
37:31We added new light fixtures and we added paint and I'm very proud of the fireplace.
37:39I did learn how to do a lime wash on it and I feel like it really brightens it up
37:44and makes
37:44it a good focal point.
37:46Completely changes the whole room.
37:47It's just perfect.
37:48It just looks amazing.
37:49I know.
37:51Alright, let's go see the kitchen.
37:53Okay.
37:53I have added, as you can see, beautiful new cabinets and we added a window above the sink.
38:01It just felt like something was missing so I love that.
38:04I know.
38:04That might be my favorite light fixture so far.
38:06Yeah.
38:06I love it.
38:07That is a cute one above the sink.
38:09And Shane, did you do the tile?
38:10I did all this backsplash, yep.
38:12It's amazing.
38:14I love it.
38:15Should we go check out the bedroom now?
38:18So, here is a bedroom.
38:21I love it.
38:22And for each of the rooms I had fun kind of coming up with like a theme and then decorating
38:26it around that theme.
38:28So, this is the Carolina room.
38:30Really coastal and calm and serene.
38:33Just the beautiful blues.
38:34You get to look out the window.
38:36Is this going to be your room, do you think?
38:38Probably, yeah.
38:39Probably, yeah.
38:39It's just really inviting.
38:42Yeah.
38:42I love it.
38:43So, this bathroom may be my pride and joy.
38:46Oh, I can't wait.
38:47Yeah, and also my crucible to manhood.
38:50I love this.
38:51Did it turn out?
38:51This shower.
38:53Oh, my gosh.
38:53Beautiful.
38:53We completely redid.
38:55I love it.
38:56That tile's incredible.
38:58Oh, thank you.
38:59It was worth it.
39:00I am so happy with how it turned out.
39:02It was worth it.
39:02It looks so good.
39:04And so, let's see this next room.
39:07Let's go.
39:07So, this is the hydrangea room and we did that hydrangea wallpaper which was not easy to put
39:15up but I think it adds a really cool touch.
39:18That is really cool.
39:20Oh, it looks wonderful.
39:21I love it.
39:25Cool.
39:25Did you do this tile too, Shane?
39:27All of it.
39:28Wow.
39:28So, I love this bathroom and I wanted it to feel kind of playful since it's right next
39:32to like the bunk room, the kids room.
39:34I love this bathroom.
39:35I think it's so fun.
39:37It is.
39:37So, this is the sandpiper room which is kind of like the kids room, the bunk room and I've
39:44always loved little sandpipers.
39:46So much.
39:46Oh my gosh.
39:48Oh, Elise, I see your dolls.
39:49Yeah.
39:50So, I made a lot of the little toys in here, a lot of the dolls.
39:54This is for kids or kids at heart.
39:57This last room, this is the August room and it just reminds me of like a summer sunset.
40:04Wanted to just really make it very soft and feminine.
40:08Guys can stay here too.
40:09Guys can appreciate a sunset.
40:12The sunset is not necessarily feminine.
40:15All right.
40:16It blends together just beautifully.
40:18I guess let's go check out the backyard now.
40:21Okay.
40:28Here's the backyard.
40:29Again, oh my word, I just can't get over it.
40:32This does not look like the same yard.
40:35Yeah.
40:36So fun.
40:36Looks great.
40:37And these picnic tables we got.
40:38Carson and Lacey helped paint these white as well.
40:40Oh, did they really help?
40:40Yeah, they did.
40:41And so they look good.
40:42That's awesome.
40:42Added the fire pits.
40:44We can sit around and do s'mores or roast hot dogs.
40:48We also put in an outdoor shower enclosure over here.
40:52Really?
40:52Oh, it's amazing.
40:54It's just so inviting.
40:55You're going to make so many fun memories out here with the kids.
40:59Well, since you are our first guest here, since we're also going to come here as a family,
41:03and then we also want to have it as a rental, I've made these cute little Christmas ornaments
41:08that say the Seashell Cottage, Oak Island.
41:11Oh, I love it.
41:13We're excited to have lots of memories with family.
41:16Yeah, glad to have you out.
41:17Thanks for coming.
41:18It's really fun seeing my mom's reaction.
41:20I know we both have similar, like, decorating styles, and we both love family.
41:25So I know she appreciates all the hard work we've put into it and the fact that we'll
41:30be able to come together as a family.
41:32So I'm really excited we got this house when our kids were still young.
41:36Just that way they'll have a lot of their childhood memories.
41:38We'll be together at this beach house.
41:41Are you excited to go find Seashells?
41:43Because this is the Seashell Cottage, right?
41:47Mom, I think I was a little more interested in this cookie.
41:50Oh, it is a yummy cookie, huh?
41:53We originally budgeted $50,000 for this, and we came in just under that, right at $47,000,
41:59and I'm pretty excited about all we were able to do with that much budget,
42:04and we were able to save a ton of money by doing it ourselves.
42:08We stuck to a plan.
42:10It wasn't always easy because we added some things, but we made it happen.
42:13So now after seeing this amazing house and yard all finished, do you want to go and do it again?
42:19I would say yes. I would like probably a little break.
42:23I don't know. We're quite ready to dive into a whole new reno.
42:27Let's get this rental off the ground. Let's enjoy it as a family, and then we'll kind of see what
42:32comes next from there.
42:33But I'm definitely game for it. This was exhausting.
42:36I feel like I'm a new man coming out of this as far as what I can get done now
42:40and what I understand about homes and took a lot more time than I initially anticipated.
42:46But I'm super proud of what we accomplished. It was a journey, but so happy to be here at the
42:52finish line.
42:55I'll see you soon.
42:55I'll see you soon.
42:55Bye-bye.
