00:00let's go over to the abs system what's your takeaways and your early takeaways so far on
00:05the automatic balls and strike system for major league baseball do you like it you know i'm pretty
00:11old school and when it was being tested in the minor leagues i had my doubts uh i was you
00:17know
00:17i wasn't very keen on the whole robot type thing which really hasn't evolved to that yet i really
00:23like it um it's added a fun element to the game you know i think they did it right they
00:28sped the
00:28games up a little bit so when this was introduced the games were already moving along with the
00:32pitch clock and all that i think if this would have been done seven eight years ago without those
00:36changes i think it would have been a little more cumbersome and kept the games even slower but given
00:41the changes they made and then introducing this uh i think it was perfect and i really do like it
00:47they have the right amount of challenges it's not like every other pitch the guys are challenging
00:51they're being very strategic from a fan standpoint it's great because you're pitching you know if
00:55you're betting over under on strikeouts and things like that you're just begging for the catcher hey
00:59you know challenge that it was right there so that's a cool element to it i like it how about
01:05this
01:05though tommy do you agree that you're kind of shrinking the strike zone because many of the umpires
01:11who are getting hammered now with this balls and strike system they were they were schooled from
01:16letters to knees and now you've kind of shrunk that strike zone a little bit so if it's off by
01:23a
01:23centimeter these umpires are getting like they're getting poor publicity now for what the system is
01:29showing here so again is that something that maybe major league baseball wasn't ready for is that these
01:35umpires were schooled differently for generations on what the strike zone was so again maybe we have
01:41to give and i hate saying this but we give the umps a small pass here in the first year
01:45of the system
01:47yeah i certainly do except for cb buckner he's the absolute worst umpire
01:52he's just absolutely a true angel hernandez and him are neck and neck um but yeah no i give the
01:58umps
01:58a pass i i think it's a human element and a computer element and unfortunately that computer is going to
02:04get it right with the visuals and everything else so yeah you do give them a pass they still play
02:08a role
02:09there's still managers getting kicked out of games um so that element of baseball is still there that i
02:14like um you know instant replay took a lot of that away with close calls at first and things like
02:18that
02:18and you know i like when the the you know the manager comes out and starts yelling a little bit
02:23adds a little spice to the game but no i i give i give the umpires a mulligan i think
02:28it's making the
02:29game better and i don't mind it at all do you see a lot of parody out of the gate
02:34here in the first
02:35couple weeks of the season i mean you know you saw the yankees get out to that seven and two
02:39start
02:39all of a sudden they started coming back after that marlin series now they're going into this
02:43tough race series that like you said there's always a great battle have you been surprised
02:47by the parody in the game a little bit you know there there's there's a lot of divisions where
02:53you got teams within a game or two of each other uh the east i think the the yankees are
02:58the
02:58only team over 500 everyone else is like six and seven so if the yankees you know lose a few
03:02games
03:03here they're going to come right back to the pack and you got you know um toronto and other teams
03:08there um the thing is i think some teams that were expected to do well have have not been playing
03:14that
03:14well the defending al east uh champs the blue jays have been very mediocre uh the mariners with that
03:21pitching staff they're not hitting and they're like five and nine right now so yeah it's it's way early
03:27you know dan the way i see it it's it's week two of the nfl you know so what can
03:32you take out of
03:33out of that you can take a little bit out of it but not much so um we'll have to
03:38see where everything
03:39goes the braves have surprised me their pitching's been decimated they lead the league in era and the
03:45best run differential in baseball where i thought they'd be a middle of the of the pack in that division
03:49but still way too early
