300 convictions: Nigeria sees mass trial for terrorism suspects

00:01A court in the Nigerian capital of Abuja convicted more than 300 terrorism suspects on Friday.
00:09The convictions were the result of a mass trial that spanned four days, having started on Tuesday.
00:16Many of those convicted have been sentenced to up to 20 years in prison
00:20after pleading guilty to terrorism-related charges brought against them by the Nigerian government.
00:27In total, there were 508 cases, of which 386 resulted in convictions, according to Nigeria's Attorney General.
00:38The mass trial comes as Nigeria's security crisis has intensified in recent months.
00:44Numerous states, but in particular the north of the country,
00:48have seen deadly armed attacks against civilians and military alike.
00:53Among the attackers, many are part of Islamist terrorist groups,
00:58such as Boko Haram or the Islamic State West Africa province.
01:02Although Nigeria's armed forces continue to fight back,
01:06the spread of violence in the country remains difficult to contain.
