00:09Inflation rises in the United States, surpassing its highest level in nearly two years due to the sharp increase in
00:15energy costs.
00:20General Min Ong Lang was thrown in as president of Myanmar, an Asian Marine conflict during a vote in the
00:25Union Assembly, which comprises the two chambers of parliament.
00:33And Israeli occupation forces escalated their combat aircraft strikes against Lebanese territory across various points of the country.
00:46Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Derezo Studios in Caracas, Venezuela. We'll begin with the
00:52news.
01:05Inflation rises in the United States, surpassing its highest level in nearly two years due to the sharp increase in
01:10energy costs.
01:11In this context, a report from the Labor Department revealed that consumer prices in March rose by 3.3%
01:16compared to the previous year, representing the largest annual increase since May 2024.
01:21Furthermore, the analysis explains that gasoline prices have surged, at average, by more than $1 per gallon since the United
01:28States and Israel launched their attack against Iran, remaining elevated even after the ceasefire announcement.
01:34Higher jet fuel prices also contributed to a surge in ticket costs during the month of March.
01:46And in Mexico, a fire broke out at the coke storage facility of the Old Mecca refinery located in the
01:51state of Tabasco.
01:52The column of black smoke was visible from more than five kilometers away, alerting residents of Paraiso and triggering the
01:58preventive evacuation of administrative buildings and areas near the maritime terminal.
02:02More than 150 specialized personnel and staff from the Ministry of the Navy worked in coordination to control the fire,
02:09which was declared extinguished around 6.25 p.m. of time.
02:12The company, PetrĂłleos Mexicanos, assured that the incident did not pose a threat to the civilian population and that operations
02:18in other sections of the plant were not compromised.
02:27And student resistance at Guatemala's University of San Carlos persists in peaceful protest following the aggressive incursion of police contingents
02:34and anti-riot units into the general campus.
02:37Consequently, leaders categorically reject the second re-election of Walter Mazarriegos as rector, denouncing it as a nefarious process of
02:46illegitimate imposition.
02:48Furthermore, the demonstrators demand absolute autonomy and transparency for the country's sole public university while simultaneously exposing the systematic criminalization
02:57of academic dissent.
02:58Meanwhile, the university perimeter remains under heavy surveillance as students alert the international community regarding imminent arrest warrants targeting their
03:06leadership.
03:14And in Venezuela, the National Assembly unanimously approved the organic mining law in its second reading.
03:19This proposal underwent a first reading and was subsequently put forward for consultation with the country's mining sectors as part
03:26of parliament efforts to keep Venezuelan people informed about new regulations.
03:30The organic law on mines aims to modernize the legal framework for regulating and exploiting mineral resources in the country.
03:36This law will see the state advance in the reorganization of a strategic economic activity for the nation.
03:48An election silence period is now in effect in Peru as political parties focus their efforts on large-scale rallies
03:54aimed at capturing the attention of voters who remain undecided.
03:58The final hours of the election campaign unfolded amid tensions, municipal restrictions and large gatherings of supporters at various locations
04:05throughout the city.
04:06The spokesperson for the National Election Board, Luis Ramos, stated that political organizations could conduct campaign activities until Thursday at
04:1411.59 p.m. local time.
04:16In a political crisis that has seen come and go over the last decade, Peru will hold general elections next
04:23Sunday that will reshape its political systems.
04:31In Argentina, university professors are holding a day of public classes as a form of protest following 171 days of
04:37non-compliance with the university finance and law by the national government.
04:41Within the framework of another week of university strikes, workers and researchers from the academic union initiated educational sessions at
04:48Plaza de Mayo to pressure the Milay administration over its refusal to provide the mandated funding.
04:53Additionally, this measure of force seeks the immediate application of the law and demands salary recomposition, despite the fact that
05:00on March 31st the Federal Administrative Court ratified that the government must immediately execute the financial law.
05:07The executive branch persists in denying the resources that guarantee the right to education in the country.
05:18And the Office of the Chief Economist of the Latin American and the Caribbean at the World Bank shared the
05:24yearly economic update for the region touching on the projected growth and the difficulties facing its economies.
05:29Through a detailed report, the Office informed that Latin America and the Caribbean entered 2026 with growth still constrained by
05:36long-standing structural challenges, sharing that regional GDP growth is projected to reach 2.1% this year, below the
05:432.4% recorded in 2025.
05:46With this economic growth in the Caribbean stands at 2.5% as the region's economies face high import energy
05:53costs and climate-related vulnerabilities.
05:55In this regard, the report identifies the rich natural and mineral resources of the region such as lithium, copper and
06:03a clean energy mix as assets that could position it as a potentially significant participant in the global energy transition,
06:10adding that a better managing of natural resources can be achieved through investment in skills, local supplier development and technology
06:17transfer.
06:17Moreover, moreover, the update points to the changing global environment as posing new risks for the region as uncertainty surrounds
06:24the rules of the international trade order.
06:31In this context, World Bank Group Chief Economist for Latin America and the Caribbean, William Maloney, cited the impact of
06:38the Middle East conflict in oil and gas prices as one of the main causes behind the lowering of growth
06:43projection for the region.
06:47The immediate impacts of oil and gas prices are through oil and gas prices globally, and that will have a
06:57direct impact, particularly on countries that choose to lessen the blow on their consumers by supporting, by subsidizing oil or
07:06gas to keep prices down.
07:09So that will have an immediate impact on the fiscal.
07:13The secondary effects are that inflation around the world is likely to regain some energy that it would slowly have
07:20been losing, and that means that the advanced countries are likely to be less aggressive in lowering their interest rates
07:27in the near future.
07:28And that's going to mean that our interest rates within the region are going to stay higher, and that increases
07:35the fiscal burden as well.
07:37So both those things are significant impacts on the fiscal and significant impacts on the economies overall, and that's why
07:45we downgraded our forecast for the region from 2.3% to 2.1%.
07:53We now have our first break coming up.
07:54Stay with us.
08:06Welcome back.
08:07In Geneva, Switzerland, a high-level panel is currently debating the effects of escalating unilateral sanctions which disrupt global commerce
08:14and humanitarian efforts.
08:16The summit seeks to critically analyze how these illegal measures systematically erode the fundamental rights of civilian populations across the
08:23Global South.
08:23Furthermore, within this framework, experts will unveil draft guiding principles designed to ensure that vital aid is never held by
08:31the imperialist struggle of coercive policies.
08:35Accordingly, the central debate will focus on establishing robust accountability mechanisms.
08:39Ultimately, these tools must provide genuine recourse to protect sovereign individuals and entities from the destructive repercussions of such arbitrary
08:47international aggression.
08:56The United Nations condemned a drone strike in northern Sudan, where more than 30 civilians were killed while attending a
09:02wedding celebration in the town of Khotun.
09:05The attack took place in the Darfur region at around 10 p.m. local time, killing 32 people, including 12
09:11minors.
09:11The UN spokesperson for his part condemned the attacks against civilians and stated that drone attacks targeting people and property
09:18are unacceptable.
09:19He noted that in Berlin, in South Kortofan, the conflicts have left 47 dead and several injured since the beginning
09:26of the week.
09:27In this context, the spokesperson called for an immediate ceasefire and for safe, rapid and unobstructed humanitarian access to be
09:33guaranteed in all areas of the country.
09:43And Djibouti heads to the polls with Ismail Omar Goulet as the clear front-runner.
09:48The current president is seeking his sixth consecutive term after having led the country since 1999.
09:53On the eve of the elections, Djibouti has already distributed ballot boxes and ballots throughout the country.
09:5978-year-old Goulet is expected to score a landslide victory over an opponent with no parliamentary clutch.
10:05Under his leadership, the country has established itself as a strategic military enclave.
10:09It is home to the only permanent U.S. base in Africa, the largest French presence on the continent, and
10:14detachments from China, Japan and Italy.
10:24And General Min Ong Leng was sworn in as president of Myanmar during a vote in the Union Assembly, which
10:30comprises the two chambers of parliament.
10:32After being elected and approved by the Electoral College the previous day, he was officially sworn in as head of
10:37the Southeast Asian nation.
10:38The ceremony marked the beginning of a new government dominated by members of the military following the dissolution of the
10:44military junta that had held power for more than five years.
11:03The Russian government announced the liberation of two strategic localities within the zone of the special military operation in Ukraine.
11:09In this context, the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed the successful control of territories in the Sumy region and the
11:15settlement of Dibrova, Donbass.
11:18Furthermore, military officials detailed that these advances were achieved in under 24 hours due to decisive offensive actions of the
11:25southern group of forces and on the battlefront.
11:27Currently, the Russian Defense Establishment reported that during the final week of operations, Ukrainian forces suffered losses exceeding 1,045
11:35combatants, along with the destruction of armored vehicles, anterior pieces and active electronic warfare stations.
11:49Now for our second break coming up, don't go away.
12:02Welcome back.
12:03The European Union increased Russian liquefied natural gas imports during the first quarters of
12:082026 driven by energy infrastructure damage taken from the conflict in the Middle East.
12:13In this regard, the firm Kepler stated that imports grew by 17% to reach 5 million tons, with an
12:18estimated cost of nearly 3 billion euros.
12:21Specifically, this increase is attributed to the purchase of Russian liquefied gas sourced from the Jamal Arctic project.
12:27Meanwhile, this trend coincides with global supply disruptions caused by the conflict in the Middle East, which impacts key energy
12:33routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
12:42And tensions in the Middle East exposed Europe's energy vulnerability.
12:46The suspension of gas shipments from its main supplier has placed the continent on high alert.
12:51Amid this crisis affecting the entire world, Qatar, one of the main suppliers of gas up until now, has decided
12:56to suspend its production of liquefied natural gas due to the violence occurring in the Strait of Hormuz.
13:00This decision has put Europe on alert as it relies on external suppliers such as Norway, the United States and
13:06Qatar.
13:07Average gas prices on the European exchange rose 59% in March compared to February exceeding $600 per cubic meter
13:14for the first time since January 2023.
13:21And the Chinese government has authorized major state refineries to utilize commercial oil reserves amidst the global energy adjustments triggered
13:29by the conflict in the Middle East.
13:31Consequently, Beijing has permitted these state enterprises to tap into their entire commercial stockpile totally 1.4 billion barrels of
13:39crude.
13:40In this regard, authorities estimate a release of approximately 1 million barrels per day between April and June, a figure
13:47supported by industry forecasts for the current month.
13:49Nevertheless, while the nation's commercial reserves handle imports of at least 11 million barrels daily, they remain distinct from the
13:55Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which currently remains untouched.
14:20The Israeli occupation forces have escalated their combat aircraft strikes against Lebanese territory across various points of the country.
14:27Local media reports visible columns of smoke and destroyed buildings from every civilian infrastructure despite the two-week ceasefire agreed
14:34upon by the United States and Iran.
14:37Furthermore, within less than 24 hours, Israel violated the troops causing large-scale destruction along with civilian casualties under pretext
14:44of targeting the Lebanese resistance, Hezbollah.
14:46However, following global condemnation of the onslaught, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced orders to commence negotiations with Lebanon after
14:54Trump requested a limitation on the attacks, according to U.S. media reports.
15:05In Lebanon as well, a new Israeli attack was captured on video showing the exact moment when an Israeli bombing
15:11interrupted an online university class.
15:13In the video released by journalist Malek al-Ruqi, the sound of a massive impact can be heard, followed by
15:18the screams of a young student.
15:20The attack struck the young woman's home directly, causing the death of the university student's mother as a result of
15:25the explosion.
15:26This student's personal tragedy adds to the growing number of civilian victims who lost their lives in their own homes
15:31over the past week.
15:40And the southern suburbs of Beirut have suffered massive destruction following 26 waves of Israeli attacks targeting infrastructure in civilian
15:48areas.
15:49Israeli attacks have focused on the Dahieh area and residential neighborhoods, causing buildings and homes to collapse in the capital.
15:56To date, hundreds of civilians have been reported killed or injured, and it is estimated that more than one million
16:02citizens have been forced to free their homes.
16:04Israel bombed Beirut in southern Lebanon as part of the new escalation implemented by the Zionist regime.
16:18Iranian news media confirmed the death of former Foreign Minister Kamal Qaharasi from injuries sustained during U.S. and Israeli
16:25airstrikes.
16:26Local newspapers reported that a former official died at his home and his wife was killed during a raid on
16:31their home.
16:31Kamal Qaharasi was Iran's ambassador to the United Nations and the country's Foreign Minister between 1997 and 2005.
16:38During the administration of reformist President Mohammad Hatami.
16:42Due to the bombings on February 28th in Iran, several high-ranking military and political figures died, as well as
16:47dozens of civilians.
16:57And following the two-week ceasefire agreed upon between Iran and the United States, the new leader of the Islamic
17:02revolution, Ayatollah Sayyid Mujahid Khamenei, has urged the Iranian people to remain vigilant against potential aggression.
17:09Furthermore, the Ayatollah emphasized that despite the current military silence, the population must intensify their presence in the streets to
17:16defend the sovereignty of the Persian nation,
17:18hailing the masses as the true victorious heroes.
17:21Concurrently, he reaffirmed that while Iran does not seek war, it will resolutely defend its territory, calling for total national
17:27unity across all sectors.
17:36And after the U.S. threatened Iran once again with an attack, Pope Leo XIV condemned the aggressive actions being
17:42unleashed by the elites in the Middle East through his ex-accounts, saying,
17:45God does not bless any conflict. Anyone who is a disciple of Christ, the Prince of Peace, is never on
17:52the side of those who once wielded the sword and today drop bombs.
17:55Military actions will not create space for freedom or times of peace, which comes only from the patient promotion of
18:01coexistence and dialogue among peoples.
18:03The Pope added,
18:04Absurd and inhumane violence is spreading ferociously through the sacred places of the Christian East, profaned by the blasphemy of
18:11war and the brutality of business, with no regard for people's lives,
18:14which are considered at most collateral damage of self-interest, but no gain can be worth the life of the
18:20weakest, children or families.
18:22No cause can justify the shedding of innocent blood.
18:49Palestinian authorities rejected the new Israeli expansion plan to construct 34 settlements in the occupied West Bank.
18:55In this regard, the expansion proposed by Israel represents a violation of international laws and the clear implementation of a
19:01racist expansionism aimed at driving the forced displacement of Palestinians.
19:06Along these lines, Palestinian authorities accused the Israeli government of attempting to ignite the region to increase the escalation of
19:12violence, thereby forcing Palestinians to abandon their territory.
19:16Simultaneously, Palestinian movements condemned Israel's actions, declaring that these measures seek to judaize the West Bank, while asserting that the
19:23Palestinian people must remain steadfast in defending their national land rights.
19:34Well, like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
