China emerges as popular medical tourism destination
Transcript
00:06Every day, some of the most complex surgeries are performed here.
00:11Dr. Li Zilun is preparing to operate on an aortic aneurysm,
00:15a ticking time bomb in the body's main artery.
00:18It's an increasingly common case in aging societies around the world.
00:22This was a very challenging case.
00:24Li walks us through a case from a week ago, repairing a leak caused by a failed graft.
00:30And then we implant the cover stand to eliminate the aneurysm.
00:37Actually, the outcome was pretty good.
00:39The patient will be discharged today.
00:42Handling complex cases like this, combining international techniques with domestically developed tools,
00:48is helping draw patients from around the world.
00:50Our government is encouraging the innovation.
00:54So lots of physicians, including our vascular surgeons,
00:58we are actively involved in the innovation.
01:01That helps to increase the effectiveness and safety and also bring down the cost.
01:07As global demand for medical travel grows, China is positioning itself as a new destination.
01:14Official data shows Guangdong province saw a 20 percent increase in foreign patients last year.
01:19Those coming for inpatient treatments rose even faster, up 76 percent.
01:24China is developing pilot zones for international medical tourism.
01:29And this hospital is part of the first batch in Guangdong to be designated by the Provincial Health Commission.
01:36Patient numbers are now going up.
01:38And the key is to turn that demand into a seamless experience,
01:42from treatment to payment to everything in between.
01:46Dedicated international medical centers like this aim to reduce waiting times and offer premium care.
01:52I think it's fast.
01:53When the patients come here for just about, I think, less than one week, you can solve the problem.
02:00Dr. Xiao Hai Peng leads the hospital and its growing international partnerships with leading institutions like Harvard.
02:07Not just for China, for the whole globe.
02:10We are facing healthcare challenges.
02:13Emerging infectious disease and chronic lung infectious disease.
02:19And also the aging population.
02:21Also the shortage of healthcare workforce.
02:24China is pitching its solutions from AI-powered workflows to increased investment in research and global engagement.
02:31In recent years, the innovation in resident medicine is dramatically growing.
02:38An example of my hospital in the past few years, we have 140 innovators.
02:46And seven of them are internationally needing innovation.
02:51Here in Guangdong, regulators are drawing clear boundaries.
02:54International services are limited to self-paying patients or those with commercial insurance.
03:00And must not come at the expense of public healthcare.
03:04China's healthcare system has come a long way with technology and service now reaching global standards.
03:10It's now opening up to international patients.
03:13And in turn, raising the bar for innovation and care at home.
03:17cumin,
03:17Zain.
