00:02Oh, hey, hi! I'm Chris and Chris, and welcome to So Cool Science! Science you can do right at home!
00:10My face seems to be trying to escape, and I'm going over today's science file.
00:17In today's science file, it says...
00:20Can toothpaste get rid of pimples?
00:25Well, that's an awesome question. I say, try this.
00:35You will need a pimple and some toothpaste.
00:39Today, I'm going to answer a question that you have probably wondered.
00:43When I sit at this desk, I don't wear any pants!
00:47Haha! Just kidding! I have no eye-like weird pants.
00:51Well, you know, except for now.
00:53Well, anyway.
00:55You probably wondered if toothpaste could cure a zit.
00:59Well, you're in luck because I happen to have a little facial friend that we can test this out on.
01:05So, let's get going.
01:11Okay, get yourself some toothpaste.
01:14Paste, not gel.
01:16Well, you know, unless you want to, you know, set your skin on fire.
01:22Alright, you're going to get a small bit of toothpaste on your finger,
01:25and then you're going to dab it on the area where you've got a zit.
01:34Ooh, it makes my skin feel all tingly.
01:38And now, you're going to hit the bed!
01:42And then in the morning, you're going to wash the dry toothpaste off your face.
01:46And check that out!
01:47Whoa! The zit is actually smaller than it was last night!
01:51That's pretty wicked cool!
01:53So, how does the toothpaste shrink the zit?
01:56And how do pimples form?
01:58Well, don't look at me.
02:00Take a closer look at this.
02:03Pimples start when sebaceous glands, which secrete an oily sebum meant to keep our hair shiny,
02:09either overproduce sebum naturally or to unblock glands from dirt, dust, or dead skin cells.
02:15This creates a perfect environment for bacteria to breathe.
02:18These bacteria infect the skin pore and your body fights back,
02:23pushing the bacteria out of the pore and into an eruption known as a pimple or zit.
02:28The toothpaste shrinks the size of the pimple by pulling moisture out of the skin cells
02:33and thus drying up the area, shrinking the pimple or zit.
02:37The best way to get rid of pimples is to cover the pimple in benzoyl peroxide.
02:41This will dry out the skin and kill the bacteria.
02:44Never pop a pimple, no matter how big it gets.
02:47This will only spread bacteria, which will make more pimples.
02:50Or worse, you could push the bacteria deeper into your skin where it could enter your bloodstream.
02:56Some people think that pimples are caused by eating a diet of greasy foods.
03:00However, this is not true.
03:02Pimples are usually caused by hormonal changes in the body,
03:05which is why people going through puberty often get tons of pimples.
03:09When adults get an overabundance of pimples,
03:12this may be a sign that there's something wrong with their endocrine system.
03:15So now you know more about pimples.
03:19You know, using toothpaste to diminish the size of your zit is why science is so cool.
