00:01Oh, hey, hi! I'm mad scientist Chris, and welcome to So Cool Science!
00:07Science you can do right at home!
00:11I'm just sitting down to this gruesome mad scientist buffet!
00:15Oh, uh, yeah, and going over today's, you know, science file.
00:20Today's science file says.
00:23Why do we get grossed out?
00:27Well, that's a gruesomely gross question. Try this.
00:37You will need some food and some scary props.
00:41Pour some boiling water into a brain mold.
00:43Put three packets in one packet's worth of water.
00:46Now stir this up and be careful.
00:49Now add some milk to give the brain a more fleshy look.
00:53Now stir this up and pour some of this into a pie plate and place this in your fridge.
00:59Carve a pumpkin and then pop the top.
01:01Gut the pumpkin's insides and then carve a face on the front of the pumpkin.
01:06Make sure the mouth is open and round, a lot like this.
01:10Now pour some salsa into a pie plate or bowl.
01:13Then set this out for your guests to enjoy with some chips.
01:17Now get a plate and a clean skeleton and order some Chinese chicken and fried rice.
01:22Fill the main body cavity with the meat to give it a rotten body look.
01:27And then add some fried rice on top of the meat to make it look like maggots eating away.
01:32And there you have it!
01:33A gruesomely gross mad scientist buffet!
01:38Oh yeah, by the way, do not do this with a skeleton that has paint on it.
01:43You know, because you want to gross your friends out, not kill them.
01:46Ha ha!
01:47So, why do we get grossed out by organs, rotting flesh, and upchuck anyway?
01:53Well, don't look at me!
01:55Take a closer look at this!
01:58Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
02:00Just like the fear of animal predators evolved to save your life, being grossed out evolved for the same reason.
02:07Except being grossed out is meant to save your life from microorganisms that could cause severe illness or even death.
02:14The reason we evolved to gross out mentality, such as bloody body parts,
02:19is because blood can carry pathogens, such as HIV or malaria,
02:23as well as other viral and bacterial infections that could possibly cause death.
02:27The reason we get grossed out by rotting flesh and maggots is because rotting meat has a lot of bacterial
02:33growth,
02:34that if eaten would make us extremely sick.
02:37The reason we're grossed out by vomit is because it helped our ancestors survive predators.
02:42If one egg was vomiting while a predator came along,
02:45it's beneficial to the entire group if the entire group is also vomiting as well.
02:49This makes the predator go away.
02:51This is why today some people get sick when they see others vomiting.
02:56You might think that humans are the only animals that get grossed out,
02:59but all animals get grossed out by something,
03:02to keep the animals from coming in contact with microscopic pathogens that could cause illness or death.
03:08In fact, when simple roundworms were placed in a petri dish with bacteria on one side,
03:12the roundworms went to the other side of the petri dish.
03:16So now you know why we get grossed out.
03:20You know, grossing your friends out with a gross buffet is why science is so cool.
03:29WAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
03:31I'll try some sort of because I'm trying to open it up.
03:31How long will you feed your friends out with a kitty?
03:31I'm not sure you do.
03:31But I'm sure you guys are taking a bite of a cute cat.
03:31I don't know if you do the best.
03:32I can use this cat on the other side.
03:32With a little bit of distance to the bed,
03:32you'll see you on the left.
03:32You can get the cat on the other side.
03:32You can get the cat on the right.
