A long term Nauiyu resident says he's toured a potential relocation site, with the site's owners saying they'd be happy to handover the land.

00:02Since 1998, floods devastated the community of Daly River Nau U. There have been calls
00:08from residents for long-term solutions to regular flooding. Andy McTaggart has lived
00:14in Nau U for more than 50 years. He was there in 1998 and again when floods hit in 2006.
00:22With 350 residents still waiting to return to Nau U after the latest floods reached a
00:29similar level to those of 98, Mr McTaggart says signs from government are positive that the
00:35community could eventually be moved to higher ground. This is the furthest we've ever got in
00:4130 odd years of asking for something. Before we didn't even get a response back. At least we've
00:47had a response and people have come and talked. Mr McTaggart says in this past month he's shown an
00:53area of land about five kilometres from the current township to representatives of the government's
00:58flood recovery unit who say the work towards a potential relocation has begun. The block was
01:04acquired by the Catholic Church when its Daly River Mission was established in the 50s.
01:09If the community makes a decision to relocate from where they are now to higher ground and they want
01:16to use our land I'll be very happy to give them our land. And the bishop says the church does
01:22not
01:22want to dictate terms but would like to see consensus around the town's future.
01:27The most important consideration for me is that the people of the town have an agreement. Now it is
01:35possible some may want to move and some may not want to move and again there has to be negotiations
01:40of how to balance all that. The government says residents of Nau U will be invited to contribute
01:47to future town planning as soon as possible. With crews on the ground assessing the flood damage,
01:53residents hope they'll be able to return home as soon as possible.
