Damage caused by widespread flooding across the Northern Territory’s Top End is still being revealed with waters continuing to rise above historic levels in the submerged Daly River community of Nauiyu.

00:06For Daly River, today is a really difficult and significant day.
00:11Obviously everyone in Daly was evacuated to Darwin and is safe here in Darwin, but their
00:16homes are inundated, there is not a building in Daly River that is not underwater, many
00:22of which are underwater to the roof.
00:23The Daly River breaking records, with the highest flood levels it has ever recorded.
00:30Authorities suggesting it could be some time before the damage at Nau U can be assessed.
00:36Further north, recovery for some flood affected communities has begun, including the small
00:42community of Darwin River.
00:43The back of a local pub, now a donation centre.

00:49It is.
00:49It's been pulled together by two local women and an outpouring of community generosity
00:56to help residents from almost 40 flood-damaged homes.
01:00We're locals and you know you've got to come together, don't you, in times like this, when
01:06you see especially friends and family going through what they're going through, you know.
01:12So it's the least we could do.
01:13Our most urgent need at the moment, I think, with families starting to be able to do clean-ups,
01:18is we need more storage tubs of all sizes.
01:21People are packing into them what they have been able to salvage.
01:24We've got donations of clothes, hygiene items for the number of houses in the region that
01:30were devastated by flash flooding on Monday.
01:33We've heard stories of chest high water rushing through homes, fridges floating down rivers today.
01:40Across the territory, you know, a number of communities are still recovering from flooding.
01:45In Catherine, more than 2600 homes have been reconnected to power and more than 80 people remain in shelters.
01:53At the latest, the emergency department in Catherine should be open tomorrow, if not sooner, and the rest of the
01:58hospital will be staged.
01:59The Chief Minister is travelling to Canberra this weekend to seek federal assistance.

02:12bearing in mind we're not in recovery phase yet.
