Sam has been in Toronto for four years and has avoided his hometown, Coubourg, ever since his transition. He’s going back anyway, for his father’s birthday. Because you can only postpone awkward family conversations so long before they start haunting you in real time.

He’s nervous for good reasons. The old split didn’t go smoothly, and he’s not interested in “harmless” comments that magically find the exact bruise you’re trying to keep covered.

On the train, he runs into Katherine, an old high school friend who’s still dealing with her own past baggage. And yes, there are feelings there. Not the cute kind either, more like the kind that resurface at the worst possible moment and demand an answer.

Close to You is a small, tense homecoming story with relationship heat and family friction. It’s not exactly a perfect movie, but it’s got a pulse.

Sam lebt seit vier Jahren in Toronto und sollte eigentlich schon lange gelernt haben, wie man zu Hause „normal“ auftaucht. Trotzdem fährt er zum Geburtstag seines Vaters nach Coubourg. Nicht, weil er Bock auf Familienromantik hat, sondern weil er Angst vor allem hat, was damals schiefging: diese blöden Sprüche, die alten Wunden und das ständige „Wir meinen es ja nicht so“.

Im Zug trifft er Katherine. Highschool-Kontakt. Vergangenheit inklusive. Sie kämpft auch mit ihren eigenen Geistern und hat Gefühle für Sam, die nicht einfach im Schrank verschwinden. Romantik, aber mit Kratzern. Das Ganze wirkt manchmal wie ein Film, der zu genau weiß, wo er weh tun will, und manchmal auch, wie er sich dabei etwas zu sehr an die eigene Stimmung klammert. Trotzdem: nah dran, menschlich unbequem.
