00:00Sardinia is making strides with this artificial island that's helping recycle and save birds at the same time.
00:06Non-profit organization the Mediterranean Sea and Coast Foundation, also known as MedSea,
00:12created a micro-oasis made out of 2,000 jute bags containing mussel shells.
00:17The surface layer of the island is made up of crushed shells and mussel-connected fiber.
00:23The island is approximately 66 feet long and 22 feet wide.
00:27Now, the island has attracted nesting endangered migratory birds that were at high risk of becoming prey to wildlife or
00:34stray animals.
00:35These birds can now nest on Musselshell Island thanks to its position in the Mediterranean Sea as they migrate from
00:42Africa to Europe.
00:44Some of the bird species include Sandwich Tern, Rosegate Gull, and Blackwing Stilt.
00:49The MedSea report notes that every year, 25 million migratory birds are killed by poachers in the Mediterranean Basin.
