00:00Atheism is the lack of belief in a god or gods.
00:02We'll focus on monotheism here since it's more prevalent.
00:04We do not claim to know for certain that god does not exist,
00:07but are simply unconvinced that he does.
00:08We view god as an unfalsifiable hypothesis,
00:10much like elves or goblins.
00:12Since god is not immediately apparent to any of our senses,
00:14evidence for him is needed if we were to give the idea of his existence
00:17any credence at all.
00:18The primary assertion of atheism is not necessarily that there is no god,
00:21but rather, there is no good evidence for god,
00:22and until evidence of a god is presented, we will be atheists.
00:25The beauty of nature is not evidence for god,
00:27unless the ugly aspects of nature, such as disease,
00:29famine, rape, and death are evidence against god.
00:31Atheists view nature as lacking conscious planning,
00:34and thus see both its beauty and its ugliness as incidental.
00:37The Bible, the Koran, someone's personal sense of god,
00:39these things are not evidence, but articles of faith.
00:41Faith is the opposite of evidence.
00:43In fact, the very definition of faith is belief without evidence,
00:46which is what many atheists are really against.
00:48But even these non-evidence-based beliefs wouldn't be a problem
00:49if they didn't influence societal opinions and attitudes
00:51and negatively affect public policy and our political discourse.
00:53With that said, it should be noted that not all atheists
00:55have qualms with other people's religiosity,
00:57but many do take issue with it for the very reasons I detailed moments ago.
