00:00The property manager I hired, has been great. He's done a couple of repairs I asked for,
00:04and I've given him a list he's working on. He usually sends photos of wildlife or sunsets to
00:09his clients every week, which was kind of making me want to get up there. On the Friday after
00:13Thanksgiving, my brothers-in-law went to my vacation home. They used an angle grinder to
00:17cut through the chain on the driveway gate, damaging the gate in the process. They tried
00:21to get in through the front door, ruining the lock set and gouging the door badly.
00:24They finally got in through the utility floor door and a locked internal door.
00:28They also broke into the barn, I'm not sure why. When they went out through the front door,
00:32they were met by sheriff's deputies and David. David gets notifications from the camera system
00:37when there's activity. He saw what was going on and called the sheriff's department.
00:41According to David, the brothers-in-law tried to bluff their way out of it, but the deputies
00:45didn't buy it. Breaking into an empty house is a pretty serious thing up there, it's usually
00:49substance addicts who ransack places and hawk everything. When my brothers-in-law were arrested,
00:53they freaked out, saying how they were going to beat the hell out of me, etc. Not smart to say
00:58that in front of cops. David and the sheriff's office tried calling my wife and me to see what
01:02we wanted to do, but we were spending the day with her parents and had left our phones in the
01:05car so
01:06we could be in vacation mode. So, they booked the brothers-in-law on everything, which is exactly
01:10what I would have asked them to do anyway. My brothers-in-law called their wives from jail,
01:14who, of course, freaked out. They called my parents, tried to call me, they're blocked,
01:19and tried to find a lawyer up there to arrange bail, not easy to do in a rural area on
01:23a holiday
01:23weekend. My older sister has zero cash and maxed out credit cards, so if they made bail,
01:28my middle sister would have had to pay for both husbands. I know they were still in jail as of
01:32Saturday afternoon. We didn't check our phones until late Friday on the way home from my in-laws.
01:37There were a ton of calls and messages from my mom, dad, David, and the sheriff's department.
01:42Talk about ruining a great day, I was in such a good mood until I looked at my phone.
01:45My wife read through the texts and listened to the messages, reading them out to me.
01:49By the time we got home, I had some idea of what was going on. I put my brain back
01:54into thinking
01:54mode, tried to get past my anger, and failed. I called David and got the rundown on what had
01:59happened and how bad the damage was, which resulted in even more anger. I ended Friday by calling the
02:04sheriff's department and telling them there was no misunderstanding. My brothers-in-law had
02:07absolutely no right to be on my property, and I wanted to press charges. I didn't call my parents
02:12back. I barely slept. I waited until Saturday afternoon to call my parents. They were both
02:17pretty rattled about it all, my mom in particular. My sisters had browbeaten them into telling me I
02:22should tell the cops it was all a mistake and that I wanted the charges dropped. I flat out refused
02:26and
02:26told them there was no way I'd do that until I spoke with an attorney and was fully paid for
02:30whatever
02:30it will cost to fix everything 100%. My mom was crying hard.
