00:02Here at the San Diego Zoo, we're celebrating Karen's 16th birthday, where she's invited five of her fellow orangutans to
00:09hang out with her on exhibit today.
00:11We had a birthday party planned with some decorations that were donated by a teacher and her students collected funds
00:17by recycling cans.
00:19And they donated all of the decorations for us for Karen's birthday, so they decided to have a princess party,
00:25hence why it's all pink.
00:27Karen's pretty special. She was born in 1992 with a heart problem, and she was one of the first orangutans
00:34to have open heart surgery.
00:36So we actually had a human heart doctor come in and operate on her heart in 1994 when she was
00:41two years old.
00:42And she recovered fine, and she's 16 today, and moving along, happy, healthy life.
00:48Inside the shredded paper, they're able to forage with seeds, and we put some raisins in there, some popcorn, and
00:53some mixed nuts.
00:55We have all kinds of spices that we can use on the popcorn, and today we chose to do a
00:59little bit of honey and cinnamon popcorn for them.
01:02The orangutan population in the wild is critically endangered.
01:06The best thing that we can do is just become better conscious consumers, knowing what items we buy at the
01:13store that don't contain palm oil.
01:17It's probably the best thing that we can do right now to conserve this species in the wild.
