00:00all right let's talk about jock peterson is the jock peterson experiment necessary a waste of
00:08time or an investment that will eventually pay off now there's a few different reasons this came up
00:13first of all it was jared i think two days ago that pointed out that two years ago jock peterson
00:21had a 900 ops against right-handed pitchers just throwing that out there and he got crushed in the
00:28comments people were just like oh yeah because he's so awesome now and it just went on and on
00:32and it gave me another perspective of how much people just despise jock peterson no and what he
00:39has done or not done for this season thus far and then to start the season jock peterson went oh
00:46for
00:4616 and he started to get booed yesterday and then he came back and had a home run it was
00:56the or on uh
00:57saturday yeah saturday no it was yesterday sorry all those losses got confused in my head and then
01:04he got booed after a strikeout in the fourth inning and then skip saying hey we feel like he's getting
01:10close we want him and we need him to produce we're better when he produces there's no doubt about it
01:15hits the home run the rangers only run of the game so jock peterson specifically is it necessary a waste
01:22of time an investment that'll pay off something else entirely what say you um i think
01:32i'm still on the give it one month and then i'm done okay like that that's the what we established
01:40was one month is what i'm going to do now whether that one month is going to be a waste
01:45of time is
01:45going to be seen in that month and you won't know we'll find out yeah uh were you there the
01:52um
01:53and so i'm i'm gonna give it that one month my feeling going into it is it's a waste of
01:58time anyway
01:58you have the guy already in mccutcheon to do the job but i understand what they want a they want
02:05to
02:05prove that the signing wasn't a waste of time they didn't just go waste a bunch of money by signing
02:10that player b they also want to have the option of going to mccutcheon or or peterson like you
02:18ultimately if both of them are swinging well you're good this does help your team skips not lying
02:24about that our team's better when he is yes because he can do a lot of different things
02:28has is he done does he lack focus does he need everybody to boo him so he goes up there
02:34and hits a
02:35home run so that he can yell keep talking s to all the people as he's rounding the bases
02:40maybe he does need that maybe that is what he needs in order he might because he gave a quote
02:45that i thought was a little whiny yeah like you remember the bryce harper home run whenever he
02:50hit that for the tvsa and i was like he just mf'd everybody in that place he walked around going
02:55you
02:56hey you everybody and i think that's like there's something about jock that he just needs this i don't
03:02know if he has that internal motivation anymore to be that or if he has the hands to do it
03:08anymore
03:08i see and i think i'm more the physical tools than the other part but here's the first wave of
03:14feedback and holy moly from the 972 they said screw jock peterson why are we putting ourselves
03:22through this jock peterson has been a big swing and a miss and right now his contract is an albatross
03:29from the 972 jock peterson needs to go from and then said not he is too conceited and not a
03:36team
03:36player whatsoever from the 806 jock is a failed waste of time and it goes on and on and on
03:44and on
03:44and on but keep that feedback coming in because we'll loop back around to that he's never produced
03:50for us fact that and that's a real thing he's he hit 173 since he's gotten here like total
03:57and that's honestly it feels lower than that but there's this misnomer last year that he's he
04:04finished the season strong false false false so you take a look at the breakdown it was just a
04:11handful of games for march and uh july so let's skip over that in april horrid
04:21115 batting average and you're like that's an old-timey stat fine 414 ops it was one of the worst
04:29months and i'm not making this up it was one of the worst months for an everyday player in the
04:34history of modern baseball for the month he had 61 at bats and one rbi and then in may he
04:46was better
04:46i guess but still awful 167 batting average 688 and then what we seem to keep clinging to
04:54is august and then two years ago because in august he was really really good and i think that's where
05:03the narrative came from that he finished out the season strong but the season doesn't end at the
05:08end of august skip ahead to september 194 with an ops of 550 so while he was absolutely tremendous
05:17in the month of august he really really was he was terrible again in september and the start to
05:24this season has been absolutely terrible and even we talked about with charity he goes look this is
05:30going to be an important run of games because he's going up against a whole bunch of right-handed
05:35pitchers and i know he hit the home run and rock on to that but that's not going to be
05:41enough now
05:42there are secondary stats that say maybe he is on the cusp or he is getting close here is an
05:49example
05:49he also walked in the eighth inning so another thumbs up in that category his average exit velocity
05:5697.2 miles per hour hard hit percentage 75 both of those were in the 99th percentile league-wide
06:06through the first six games so that argument can be made he is one of the most unlucky players
06:12in major league baseball to start the season and i think if not for the baggage of last year
06:20maybe you would consider that and i think jock peterson kind of feels that way as well because he was
06:26asked
06:27about his struggles and he said quote i think a lot of people blow things out of proportion there's still
06:33opening day paint on the field you guys can view it as you want but we're like eight games into
06:38the
06:38season so there's a long way to go and oh if if you had if you'd had a good season
06:46last year no what
06:47nobody would say a word right now eight games in but it's the carryover from last season yeah and
06:53kevin you know chris young talked about the volatility of last year's lineup and how you had
06:59dudes who could either hit home runs or strike out five times like that's what the feeling was
07:05was you were going to have that's why doles garcia jonaheim are no no longer here they say
07:10that this team should have less volatility in it kevin look at peterson's career it's it's a roller
07:17coaster yeah there's no true consistency in his career at all and so that's the other thing about him is
07:25this is the player that he is he'll have you know good moments where he's a really hot hitter
07:30and then he is just non-existent so again the you're acting like the new season is a fresh start
07:38for you and rangers fans that's not the approach that rangers fans are taking it to the approach
07:45that the rangers fans see it is since you got here you've been a 174 hitter with a 602 ops
07:53yikes that's that's that's your rangers career right now and so so for for that it's not like
08:02that's just simply not good enough at all you have 69 strikeouts to 37 walks that's that's what
08:09rangers fans are upset about not how early in the season it is and that you haven't produced yet
08:15it's the fact that you're a year and a few games into this season and you still we're still trying
08:21to
08:21figure out what the answer to that question is that's the frustrating part as a rangers fan
08:25yeah and i'm trying to think about the best way to phrase this because this might be an unfair
08:34statement and y'all might tell me hey i think that's unfair but i think it bothers a lot of
08:40rangers
08:41fans it bothers me that he opted in to the other 18 or 19 million dollars in his contract when
08:49he had
08:49a god-awful historically terrible season but on the flip side what would you do exactly i would do
08:56it also do the same and then the other thing i would say on the flip side is well the
09:00contract
09:00was written that way for a reason you know like maybe jock took what he felt was a bit of
09:06a pay cut
09:06coming here knowing that the option would kind of protect him and and that's the thing we talk about
09:11it all the time you don't want a double standard when like we give the rangers a pass for doing
09:16x y and
09:17z and maybe screwing over a player but you don't want to give jock peterson a pass but i think
09:22that
09:23rubs some people the wrong way because that's why you can't dfa him or i cannot envision a world in
09:29which they dfa him anytime soon i'm not saying they shouldn't or his production doesn't warrant it
09:35but with the owners being maybe not as free spending as we would like i feel like it's the
09:42most polite way to put that you're gonna get rid of 18 19 million dollars in contract and then go
09:49back to the owners and say but we really need a closer yeah we're gonna get it this time i
09:54just
09:54don't see a way in which they're like well i know you pissed away that money but this time it's
10:00going
10:00to be different at least not with this ownership group there are probably plenty of other teams are
10:04like no problem but with this ownership group it does not feel like that's going to be the case and
10:09so for everybody who wants him dfa'd or whatever the case is i think that's why that's not going to
10:15happen now the other question becomes but does that mean he needs to keep playing and does that mean he
10:21needs to keep being fifth every time you trot him out there in the batting order i have to admit
10:26and
10:26i know managers would love nothing more in the world than to set the exact same lineup for 162 games
10:32and i
10:32get all of that but every time the lineup comes out jock peterson is sitting there at fifth
10:36in the middle of the lineup i'm like wow why i just that part i don't get because they feel
10:44like
10:45if he has a one for four day one is going to be a home run with runners on that's
10:50their right that's
10:51their their feeling right i don't know what data proves that because in most instances won't they
10:57roll data out to say hey yeah take that for data yes i do love that and it just feels
11:03like they keep
11:04going off of well everything would be better if this happened everything would be better with
11:09this lineup if jock peterson was hitting fifth and he was back to two years ago form and really
11:14crushing the ball sure i agree i'm sure you agree and alec agrees and all rangers fans agree that is
11:20not a strategy everything would be better if i pooped rolls a hundred dollar bills man that would be
11:26sweet guess what that is not the case not gonna happen anytime soon i don't think so i gotta make
11:31another plan yeah yeah i mean look would i share my that kevin that's the question or would i just
11:38be
11:38like no that's a good question flush it right down the drain i thought maybe we would get some feedback
11:44that said the investment is going to be worth it especially when we brought up some of those second
11:49tier numbers that show he's in the 99th percentile of hitting the ball hard and hopefully that will turn
11:54around from the 512 waste of time he's done from the 214 waste of time from another 214 waste of
12:01time 150 percent of the time another 817 waste of time and it just goes on when you break the
12:10record
12:10with 0 and 41 yeah when you do that in the past kevin people aren't going to forget about it
12:16they're
12:16going to be like that's what you are and you need to show me that you're anything other than that
12:21yeah
12:21kevin so the start of the season hasn't now you hit a home run early the other day yes your
12:27only run
12:27that's your old that's the only thing you've done well do it again yeah you know do keep doing that
12:34instead of being the volatile player that we're talking about you be does it does it become even
12:38worse when he becomes like the poster person for the rangers bad offense because like that's probably
12:45not fair to other people yes for sure there are but it feels like jock peterson is the guy like
12:50when he struck out obviously an important situation yesterday man my timeline was flooded with get rid
12:56of this guy get him off the team and then he hits a home run and we don't hear thankfully
13:00jock hit the
13:01home run so we scored a run it was just left with this offense sucks and i don't like jock
13:07peterson
13:07yeah pretty much that's the feeling
13:09you
