The K&C Masterpiece debated whether Jamie Benn will return for another season, if the Stars got a better outcome by sticking with Jake Oettinger compared to other playoff goalies, and how different roster scenarios stack up in the 1st edition of Dallas Stars Overreaction or Reality.
Transcript
00:00This past Thursday, Barenix, stop it. Dallas Stars overreaction to reality. This past Thursday should be the final game Jamie
00:11Benn has played for the Stars.
00:13I believe so. It didn't look like a good product on the ice. There were some moments of just, what?
00:23And that's not how you want to remember Jamie Benn.
00:25Now, unfortunately, that might be the last play we get from him.
00:29Right. Is that, that feeling of that. But I think it should be, especially if you're looking to be a
00:36better team.
00:37He has a lot of cachet with the team and the fans and everything. But can a better player or
00:44two be on that line and maybe get more production out of that line?
00:50And that's the question that Jim Neal has to answer this offseason.
00:54Alec, what say you?
00:56Reality, it should be. The Benissance is fun while it lasted because we simply did not expect much because we
01:06were kind of having the same conversation this time last year.
01:09So whenever you saw some of those flashes of vintage Ben, you're like, oh, cool.
01:15You know, wasn't really expecting much.
01:16So it's fun because you were forced to watch it.
01:20It doesn't mean I agreed with it.
01:22It doesn't mean that I wanted it to happen.
01:25There's just so many. It feels like every veteran or young player that you have tied up long term, they
01:31have no movement clauses as well.
01:33So I kind of just want to clean out whatever I can clean out easily and try to supplement from
01:40there.
01:40And he's one of the most expendable pieces.
01:43Dallas Stars overreaction or reality, whether Ben returns or not, the Stars must have a new captain next season.
01:51Uh, yeah. Reality. I mean, if we're moving on from Ben...
01:55Even if we're not.
01:56If we're not moving on from Ben, it's not going to happen.
01:58But reality is...
01:59Doesn't that seem like a bad idea?
02:00Uh, yeah, but...
02:02It's just the... that's kind of the way hockey is.
02:05You know, they're just very traditionalist in that manner.
02:09Or they're just like, well, we're going to keep this thing going as long as it can.
02:12Because they want that dude to win with the sea on his chest.
02:17Yes.
02:18But I agree with you, but that's mostly because I think he should not be on the skates next year.
02:24Alec?
02:25What say you?
02:27Another reality.
02:28It's got to be somebody else because whenever...
02:31It's just got to be disheartening for any fan base when you're talking about in a playoff run,
02:37somebody that should be a healthy scratch being your captain.
02:39Yes.
02:40Alec, too, didn't you hear?
02:41We heard...
02:42Now, we heard from Robert Tiffin last week.
02:44Like, Minnesota was goading him into fighting them.
02:48Goading him into...
02:49Let's charge it up.
02:51And then he said no.
02:52Yeah, that is pretty wild.
02:54And when you need that injection from somebody, it's got to be that guy.
02:59And if that's all you can offer at the time, then that's got to be the thing.
03:02Especially if you're putting yourself in the penalty box for other dumb things.
03:06Might as well go in for fighting.
03:09And when you can't do, find a way to contribute.
03:12And he couldn't.
03:13What were reaction or reality the Stars can win a Stanley Cup with Jake Ottinger as their primary goalie?
03:23I think that's reality.
03:24I think it's reality.
03:26Okay.
03:26We've seen him at what we thought was his best.
03:31And it's really good.
03:32Is that still there?
03:34That's the thing that I just don't know.
03:37But I do think that it's a reality because I think he's got the talent to do it.
03:41The sharpness just faded this year.
03:43And I think that what he said after the season, I didn't accomplish any of my goals.
03:48That's frustrating to hear.
03:50But I think that he needs to now go on a journey, if you will, Kevin.
03:56A vision quest, perhaps?
03:57A vision quest.
03:58That's a good one.
04:00He needs to go really take a deep soul search and say, why did I let not being the Team
04:06USA goalie affect me so much?
04:09Okay.
04:09That should have been a forced driver rather than something that put him down.
04:13Oh, you think it was a limiter instead?
04:15I thought it was.
04:16Oh, fascinating.
04:16I think it was something that he was...
04:18I think for a section of the season, it was bam.
04:21And then the other part was, he just kind of...
04:25Well, now that the Olympics are over and those fluky goals were still getting through, I thought it was a
04:30problem for him.
04:32All right.
04:32Alec, overreaction or reality?
04:34The Stars can win a Stanley Cup with Jake Ottinger as their primary goalie.
04:398.93 save percentage in this series.
04:422.83 goals against.
04:45Reality, I think they can.
04:46Man, I've seen teams win cups with good goalies before.
04:51You know, everybody...
04:52In playoffs, you always get way more critical about your goaltending because, of course, it's the easiest thing to point
04:59out.
04:59They should give up zero.
05:00Yes, they always should.
05:01Every single playoff game, they should pitch a shutout because that's how it works in the NHL.
05:06No, it's not.
05:06I've seen it happen with okay goalies.
05:09I like what Corey's saying because I think his quote today about how he didn't accomplish his goals,
05:15and he mentioned the Team USA thing.
05:17For Jason Robertson, it didn't seem to bother him.
05:20Yeah, that seemed to be the one where he was like, I'll show you.
05:23Yeah.
05:23But also, he's in contract season.
05:25True.
05:26And I don't think he was the reason his coach got fired.
05:28Oh, yeah.
05:29I agree with that.
05:30Yeah, so I think that that's something that should motivate you going forward.
05:34And you say, how about I go get a Vezna instead?
05:36Yeah.
05:36You know, like, and I prove you wrong in this situation.
05:39That just seemed to slow him down.
05:41So whatever is like two steps below whatever Aaron Rodgers decided to do a couple years ago,
05:46that darkness retreat, whatever is like two steps below that, let's do something like that.
05:51Reset.
05:52We need to go into next season just with different goals, honestly, because if your goals are just
05:58going to beat yourself up throughout the season, we need to take a different mental approach.
06:02So as long as the brain works, we love that phrase around here now, as long as that's intact,
06:07you can, he just needs to tune that and get honed in on the mental side of it again.
06:13I believe this is the 13th season that they have done it this way.
06:18But overreaction to reality, the NHL should change its playoff format prior to next season.
06:24As much as us fans think that, there's no way the dude who's running the league does.
06:29I think you're probably right.
06:30He loves the idea that you are getting maybe now what he would have loved more is more game sevens
06:37in this first round between two.
06:40Why couldn't he get as many as the NBA?
06:41Yeah, that's like that's what he ultimately wants is for game sevens to exist between two really good teams.
06:47A wild and a wild and stars game seven that long of a series.
06:52It's going to keep people tuned in longer.
06:54I understand why he's doing it.
06:56He's doing it because ratings drive the money in their business.
06:59Don't you think if they keep scoring 15 goals per game that the wild and avalanche series will drive people?
07:05For sure.
07:06They'll be like, oh my gosh, the sport's changing.
07:08That's the greatest thing I've ever seen.
07:10They made the net bigger?
07:11But yeah, I think that fans don't want it.
07:15And we've been in the unfortunate situation of it.
07:18It's worn us out every time.
07:19Our path has been so difficult because we're not in the right division.
07:23We have a stacked group there.
07:26It's really tough.
07:27But I don't think it's going to change anytime soon, Kevin.
07:29Alec, NHL should change its playoff format prior to next season.
07:35Reality, they should.
07:36And it's unfortunate that they're not going to.
07:39They're not even going to blink about it because that's one thing that they really do have over the other
07:45leagues right now.
07:46They can say from the moment the postseason starts, you're getting chaos.
07:50You're getting best on best the moment it starts.
07:54You can't really get that because in the NFL, you're going to have the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, you know, hobbling
07:59in with eight wins, you know, in a playoff game.
08:02And they're going to lose by two and a half possessions.
08:04You're going to see that in NBA basketball.
08:07We've seen some awful playoff games already this season.
08:10The NHL loves that.
08:12They want that high octane energy and they want chaos and they want upset.
08:17You know, they want people to be mad after the first week of the playoffs, which sounds counterintuitive, but it
08:24drives ratings and it gets conversation going.
08:26So it's going to stay that way.
08:28Dallas Stars overreaction or reality?
08:30Glenn Gullitson is the right coach for this franchise.
08:34Now two and eight in the playoffs.
08:36Overreaction.
08:37Maybe one day he'll prove me wrong on this, but I thought things were kind of weird this year.
08:43There were some moments that I was like, he navigated through well.
08:47Good job, you know.
08:49But there's nothing that tells me right now he's a championship standard coach.
08:54That's the reality right now.
08:56He's got a long way to go before he gets there.
08:58But hopefully he gets, he finds his core that fights for him on a daily basis.
09:03But right now, Kevin, I'm going to have to say that's an overreaction.
09:06Alec, what say you about Mr. Gullitson?
09:10Hmm.
09:12This is tough because at the point of, at the point of the hiring, we're all kind of like, meh.
09:19You know, the names compared to him out there, you're like retread.
09:24Really?
09:24Yes.
09:25That's what we're going to do.
09:26And then he impressed me early on in the season, you know, calling out his team and
09:30the media and everybody seemingly waking up overnight.
09:33Seemed like the messaging was there.
09:35I mean, the power play, we've talked about that at length.
09:38That's what he's good at.
09:40And it was very good.
09:41Special teams in general was just good physicality.
09:43Seemed like it got turned up a little bit.
09:45And then you get to the playoffs where it matters the most.
09:47And it seemed like nothing really worked.
09:50And there was a lack of effort in terms of adjustments.
09:53It felt like in the playoffs, too.
09:55You finally put some of those trade deadline acquisitions to work and you switch the lineups when you feel like,
10:02at least morally, you're already defeated.
10:04So, in the playoffs, I don't think so.
10:08And that's what matters to me.
10:09So, I'm going to say overreaction.
10:11Overreaction or reality?
10:12Jason Robertson will be on the stars next season and far into the future.
10:24Um, and there's a bonus question with this one.
10:27Reality.
10:28Okay.
10:29And here's one of the reasons why.
10:31Kevin, after the game, did you see the picture after the game?
10:34Jim Nill goes and congratulates the group on the other side after their game.
10:40I don't think so.
10:41There's a picture out there.
10:42And they were like, is this normal?
10:44And then all these posts of people saying Jim Nill is the class of the class.
10:48Like, he is just that good of a dude.
10:50A player that arrived here said, whenever I got to Dallas, he drove me and my wife around showing off
10:55the city.
10:56And then, you know, like, that's just who he is.
10:58And we've talked to him plenty of times to know.
11:00Like, it's always a pleasurable talk.
11:02I think he carries himself in a certain way and there's this level of honor that he likes.
11:07And I think having Jason Robertson be part of this team for a long time.
11:10Fascinating.
11:11I think is part of that.
11:13But I also look at it and I look at it a little differently.
11:15I'm like, I want somebody faster.
11:18So, maybe Jim Nill's like, no, I got a good character guy.
11:21I want to keep and hold on to him.
11:23I'll get other faster players to go around him.
11:26Alec, overreaction reality.
11:28Jason Robertson will be on the Stars next season and for far into the future.
11:34Bonus!
11:34Oh, no.
11:35You would trade Jason Robertson in three first-round picks for Connor McDavid.
11:38I'll address the bonus first.
11:40Easily, yes.
11:41Wow!
11:42Three times on Sunday.
11:44I'm doing that.
11:45If I...
11:46You talk about it.
11:47Easily, eh?
11:47Yes, you talk about it.
11:49He is in the conversation for future greatest of all time.
11:53Right.
11:53And at least for my age group.
11:56He's the greatest I've ever seen.
11:59So, I would do that in a heartbeat.
12:01But will Robo be here?
12:03Yes, he will.
12:04Well, because I think Jim Nill operates in the same way that Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones
12:09do at some points.
12:11That's my guy.
12:12I found him.
12:13I take a lot of pride in that.
12:14You're getting a second contract here and you're going to stay here for a long time.
12:18This one, I think, is very warranted.
12:20Especially after this season.
12:21I saw all the changes that I wanted to see out of Robo.
12:25So, I think it makes sense.
12:27Obviously, another $12 million, I'm assuming, salary going towards one single player.
12:32That stings when you've got a lot of big contracts on this team already.
12:36But, I think in the long term, it probably is the right decision.
12:40And I think that if Robo wants to be here, which I think he does, I think he's going to
12:44be here long term.
12:46I do like that idea.
12:47If Gullitson was the reason that McDavid came here, he was like, I want to go to Dallas
12:52to be with Glenn Gullitson again.
12:54I mean...
12:55He'd be like, oh my gosh, Jim Nill was playing chess.
12:58So, three first rounders and Jason Robertson for Conor McDavid.
13:03Is he worth that?
13:05That is what you have to decide.
13:07The answer is yes.
13:08Ooh.
13:11Especially if you were going to lose Jason Robertson anyway at some point.
13:14Which you might not necessarily.
13:16You could, though.
13:17You could.
13:18All right.
13:18Again, Kevin, I ask you this question.
13:22What are the three great motivators?
13:25Contracts can be one of them.
13:26No, you're right.
13:28One of the things I pointed out before, though, is when Jason Robertson signed his new contract,
13:32the very first year of that contract is when he had his best regular season ever.
13:37He also had a grudge with America this year, so...
13:40Oh, man.
13:41All right.
13:42That was two motivators.
13:43That notwithstanding.
13:45One more for you.
13:47The America grudge.
13:48You give me a lot to think about.
13:49So, Thomas Hartley, before this season, going into his contract year, he had a plus-minus
13:58of 28, plus 28 two years ago, plus 32 last year.
14:05Signs his new contract worth an average of $10.587 million per year.
14:11In this season, he's a plus-three.
14:14He was a minus-10 in last year's playoffs, and this year, he had zero points in the series
14:19and was a minus-six.
14:21Overreaction or reality?
14:23Signing Thomas Hartley to that massive extension was a massive mistake.
14:28Overreaction.
14:29Hope.
14:29I don't know about that.
14:31Hope.
14:32Okay.
14:32I want to get him in a non-Olympics year.
14:36I want to get a lot of these guys in a non-Olympics year back and see how that happens.
14:39I could see that.
14:40But that's what I'm holding on hope to for now.
14:43Alec, overreaction or reality, Thomas Hartley, and giving him that massive extension was a
14:51massive mistake.
14:53I want it to be overreaction.
14:56What?
14:56I'm kind of with Corey.
14:59You know what?
15:00I'm going to say overreaction.
15:01I'm going to steal Corey's line of thinking.
15:03I was going to say reality, but give me a season where that is the one and only thing
15:08where he is focused on, and then I'll readjust my line of thinking.
15:14I don't know.
15:15It has all the makings of what I was just talking about.
15:18The, I found this guy, we're going to go ahead and pay him before the rest of the league
15:22discovers him kind of thing, and you move just a little bit too quick on that.
15:27I think you did move too quick on it, but the deal is done.
15:30I think he's a good player, and I think he's the right kind of player for this team, so
15:36I'm going to give him one more year before I make assumptions.
15:38We're the KNC Masterpiece right here on 105.3 The Fan.
