00:00historically bad start for this boston red sox team tied for the worst nine game record which
00:07again just nine games but that's all we have to go off of right now it's early right and yet
00:13it's historically bad right yeah well it is historically awful is what it is i they have
00:22scored two runs or less in nearly half of these of these nine it's embarrassing yeah and they have
00:29to do something that we're looking at them to be like can they do this where they have to go
00:34on and
00:34you know like an unbelievable run or let's say over their next nine games where they're like
00:38seven and two where you go all right for people to kind of jump back in and start maybe believing
00:44and going all right we're not gonna go crazy about those first nine because they were so hot
00:49over these last nine games they have to do something that do we expect this team to do
00:55and i don't think nobody expects them to get on but i feel like and maybe it's recency bias or
01:01whatever and and we're looking at this as as being worse than it is but i feel like you know
01:06last
01:07season they had a a similar poor start but but there was light at the end of the tunnel like
01:15you were
01:15looking at that team last year and going all right well rafael devers is gonna hit the baseball
01:22alex bregman is gonna hit the baseball like i curtis you agree like you you at least felt that
01:29there was gonna that it wasn't gonna stay that way i i don't feel that way you're spot on and
01:34here's the other reason roman anthony was waiting in the wings yeah you you had a team that was going
01:40to be getting bolstered by those guys that we had been talking about for five years you read about
01:45meyer you were obviously the first was what what date does roman anthony make his debut that was the
01:50early season talk the whole time so no matter how badly they played there was an upper there was a
01:55a well-founded feeling by red sox fans that they would get better and this year i i honestly think
02:03it is more likely that jason veritek is the manager of this team before the end of the season
02:08that it is that cora gets an extension as the manager of the red sox at the end of it
02:13because i don't know how much cora wants to do this yet i mean i maybe i'm just an easy
02:17mark
02:18like i thought he was that i got just maybe it's pete abraham's cologne i just was all in on
02:24the
02:24socks at spring training i was taken by the optimism the quiet confidence the professional
02:29approach cora was we all noted how happy and easy seemed and you're watching this and it is a disaster
02:38and then last year when we kind of talk about last year just kind of looking at their schedule for
02:43last
02:43year after they started one and four they then they ripped off and they went they won five in a
02:47row
02:48so that kind of like changed people's look after that five game winning streak so they're gonna have
02:54to have one of those five game six game winning streaks where as of right now fans are gonna
03:02feel a little bit more confident in what they're seeing i mean that's unlikely in this series that
03:08begins tonight so i mean that's a that is right currently an excellent milwaukee team right you
03:15are going to have to fight and claw your way into at least winning this series and greg i think
03:21what
03:21feels differently right now is that you could look at the reds and say okay that's a pretty good team
03:27you could look at houston and say all right once again maybe just a great offense there
03:33the padres were one of the worst offenses already this season and they came out here were able to
03:40do what they did against you yesterday like in what was supposed to be a rubber match where you can
03:44at least put up a fight there and try to win your first series like losing to the padres that
03:50way is
03:51dreadful in terms of where you are so far and then the other thing when you know when you go
03:56on some of
03:57these losing streaks and you go okay i starting pitch is good but our bullpen's falling apart or we're
04:02hitting the ball all over the place we're just not able to get us starting pitching to to to do
04:08well
04:08there's nothing that you do well like you're starting pitching stinks you're hitting stinks
04:14other than minus crochet you're starting pitch yeah yeah yeah other than a bray you and they play quick
04:19games i'll tell you what's terrifying on a side note is that you were locked into ranger suarez for five
04:26years right all right why did you give the five-year contract to him like how terrifying is that
04:35prospect and that's a brez bot decision like all right here's the one guy that we felt is like this
04:42is the guy we need to go after in free agency and he's going to be you know technically our
04:48number two
04:48pitcher even though we don't want to go lefty lefty but he's the guy that we feel like is supposed
04:53to
04:53have be uh the next best pitcher after garrett crochet so you think breslow said i don't want
04:59alonzo i want ranger suarez um no i i think maybe he wanted both of them but if he had
05:06his druthers he
05:08would have taken to me like i don't think we'll ask him well we i think we ask him because
05:13i would
05:14say this somebody wanted ranger suarez yeah dave dombrowski didn't no no dave dombrowski i'm talking
05:20about him somebody wanted him somebody said he has this weird thing where he wants good players
05:26i don't know if it's somebody said we're gonna give this guy five years in a hundred and what was
05:31it
05:3130 million or something along the 35 years you're locked into him for five years right somebody said
05:38we're gonna give him that so if you're telling me it's not breslow then it's either cora or henry
05:44what's a worse situation and i feel like curtis might have a good answer for this
05:48that you don't understand the market and your front office just can't execute these deals well
05:55or ownership is saying it doesn't matter this is how much money you get to play with and you can't
06:00go outside of these constraints at all that's a great question i think sadly it's both like i think
06:06that breslow was the 10th guy they interviewed for that job all the good gms didn't want to come here
06:10because of what you just described in terms of their willingness to get at the top of the market
06:14spend six-year deals for the best players there was no interest of doing that here
06:18and i think the ownership was very cautious this offseason to not set the market on players
06:25as you're entering a season where you're looking to lock out those guys at the conclusion of it
06:30i think both of those came into play and i also think cora making it no secret that he wants
06:36to be
06:36gm at some point is kind of a direct shot at breslow like imagine if somebody walks in today and
06:43he's
06:43like you know i i want to work on the morning show but eventually i'm just going to replace greg
06:46like that's what i want to do like well that wouldn't be taken too well and greg would have
06:50them fired rightfully so but like i just i don't know it's the worst combination of an ownership
06:55group that's fearful of long-term contracts and a general manager slash president that really
07:01probably wouldn't have this job if it wasn't for the ownership's approach to payroll
07:04good morning and this and when you you know when you look at it come there was sixth in payroll
07:10which is weird when you look at their payroll in 2026 what are you looking at i'm looking at i
07:17believe this is bet mgm's uh site they are sixth with their payroll for this year is 263 million
07:24and obviously the dodgers are at 415 and the mets at 374 and the yankees three so you're
07:31what's the yankees the yankees uh 337 so you're the red socks the red socks are 263 so you're 70
07:39million less than your biggest rival yes that's not competing no no so that's the point it's like
07:43well they're six but then you look at the the distance between them and the yankees
07:48okay
07:48you
