00:00Tim, do you think it should expand, or do you like the number where it is right now, the NCAA
00:04tournament?
00:06No, we don't need to expand this tournament.
00:08It is perfect, okay?
00:09Don't mess with perfection.
00:12This tournament is tremendous.
00:15What we need to do, Dan, is we need to move the calendar.
00:18I think you and I have had this conversation about football.
00:22And since you mentioned it, I'm going to throw this out.
00:24I want to applaud Greg Byrne, the athletic director of Alabama, who yesterday you may have read, said, we've got
00:33nine conference games now.
00:34We do not need an SEC championship game anymore.
00:38It ran its course.
00:39It's now outdated.
00:41We don't need that.
00:43And the reason he said it is because he believes, and I agree with him, that they need to expand
00:47the college football playoff to 16, and I believe eventually to 24.
00:52And that is the direction that they're going to go in.
00:55By having a conference championship game in football, you now have moved the calendar further back, which in football we
01:04don't need.
01:04We need the calendar moved up.
01:06College football needs to start in early August.
01:09It needs to end at or around New Year's Day the way it did when you were playing because that's
01:15when the college football –
01:16that's the history and the tradition of the college football championship, and it's the history and tradition of the players
01:22and the fans.
01:23But in order to get a playoff in that would amass 16 teams and finish on time and not get
01:29in the way of the NFL playoffs, where from a PR standpoint, it's lost.
01:35We lose college football over that long layoff that we have between semifinals and finals.
01:41In basketball, we need to do just the opposite, Dan.
01:44We need to expand and move back the calendar.
01:47We shouldn't have a meaningful college basketball game until after Thanksgiving because when fans are watching college football, they don't
01:55want to watch basketball.
01:56Some of the most important games in basketball that help these teams get in the tournament, they're played in November,
02:01you know, in places like the Bahamas.
02:05What are they going to do next, have a tournament in the UAE?
02:08I mean, we don't need that.
02:09People aren't watching.
02:10So we need to move the calendar back in basketball, start it after Thanksgiving, and this outdated view that we
02:18have to have the tournament concluded in time for the Azaleas to blossom at Augusta National is a joke.
02:24We can move this thing back in a couple of weeks and have the basketball's regular season should get more
02:31attention.
02:32The playoffs, the tournament, is already engulfed the regular season of basketball.
02:38I mean, we need more attention served to the regular season so the fans know a little something about these
02:44teams.
02:44How many times do you get the brackets, Dan, and you go, okay, who's good?
02:47I have no idea.
02:48I mean, that's why people can't accurately predict or have a feeling about the tournament because they haven't watched as
02:55much, the casual fan especially.
02:57But viewership is up across the board for the regular season.
03:01They're having record-breaking in gradings this year for live college basketball and live football.
03:07But we need to move the calendar forward in football.
03:11We need to move it backward in basketball.
03:13And listen, the championship is on TBS today, not CBS.
03:19So what's the rush?
03:21I mean, you're going to tell me that we can't live in a world where the Masters is taking place
03:26while the NCAA tournament's going on?
03:28That's garbage.
03:29That's an outdated dinosaur thought process.
03:32That's an outdated dinosaur thought process.
