00:07Good morning, everyone.
00:08Welcome to Washington, DC.
00:10I'm going to take you around the city,
00:11show you some monuments and memorials.
00:14Cheers to a good time.
00:16Cheers to a good time.
00:20So we're looking at the north front of the White House.
00:23Oh, look, there's a former first family
00:25out front of the White House.
00:26You see the former first family?
00:28You don't see the bushes?
00:30Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
00:41Right now we're driving along the National Mall,
00:44which isn't a shopping mall, ladies, right?
00:47On your left is the United States Capitol,
00:50and there's a lot of monkey business
00:51that goes on on Capitol Hill.
00:53And in the context of animals, a group of baboons
00:55is called the Congress.
01:00Yes.
01:00Hi, Danny.
01:02Oh!
01:02Do you guys want to know what we're doing here today?
01:04Yes.
01:04We're here to meet Nick, the legendary Washington, DC
01:08tour guide.
01:08So we're going to swing around to the White House.
01:11So I bring a lot of people to the house, and they say,
01:13wow, it's so small.
01:14And I say, wow, where do you live?
01:18Nick the DC tour guide is the real deal the best in the city
01:24he's so popular with the locals and visitors alike that he's earned the
01:27nickname the tour guide oh I love a legend on the show me too I know when
01:34the people get on the bus and they first see me they're like hey are you the bus
01:37driver I say no I used to be I'm the tour guide I drove the double-decker tour
01:41bus and my mentor pulled me to the side and said really have a shot of being a
01:45great tour guide because you could teach history you can't teach personality 3 2
01:501 so I've been taking people around this city for about 17 years now Nick will
01:56always tell you that this is not a job for him he loves what he does and he is
02:01self-taught never been to college a day in my life but I made sure when I chose to
02:05do this the knowledge and the facts were there and tour guide is his world that's
02:11a hard job to like give tours every day that is hard I couldn't do it he's like
02:15constantly entertaining constantly have to have knowledge lady freedom weighs 15,000 pounds
02:21heaviest woman I know all right you laugh you live longer so I try to bring humor to the tour
02:27now off to your right you're gonna see this red brick building with a gold cap on it let me
02:32know
02:33where you can see it that's a Starbucks I just try to lighten the crowd so that's my my superpower
02:42I
02:43guess you have the best tour guide in the city just in case you did I appreciate you Yana
02:49interestingly enough Nick was born and raised in Washington DC and today lives just across the river
02:55in Arlington Virginia with his longtime partner Vivian what are you cooking about the frozen
03:01chicken they've been together for 11 years and share a bustling home filled with five incredible
03:07children I have four children from a previous relationship my oldest is Jeffrey he is 18 he's
03:13about to go to college I have a 17 year old Vivianna Nina she'll be 16 in September then I
03:20have Joelle he is 14 and then I have Nico and Nico is Nick and I's child biologically
03:28think that's enough yes okay two scoops of ice and pour it in there this man came into our lives
03:34um when the kids father didn't show up and he was he's their parent he's their father Nina what you
03:39getting nails done for no dates right it was hard at first trying to be that dad because they have
03:47a dad
03:47but I think the people that are put into your life they come into your life for a reason
03:51and I love all of them
03:56I work about 12 to 13 hours a day every day no days off but gotta pay bills and feed
04:02the kids and
04:03buy the kids cars and paying for them sisters it's a lot I can sleep when I die it's all
04:09right
04:09I got a job to do right now working a night shift yep again tough live at work and I
04:15visit home
04:16I think he feels like he has to do everything because he didn't have a father figure in his life
04:21coming from where I come from we weren't rich of course just being in that environment I started
04:26kind of getting into the streets and I got into some minor trouble growing up I got called and
04:31um that was my wake-up call at that point I knew like that's not the path that I wanted
04:37to take
04:39so I just want to make sure as a parent I'm able to support them in anything they're trying to
04:44do
04:44love you too when Nick you know goes to work every day it makes me feel proud however I am
04:53you know a bit
04:54sad because he is constantly working then I'll help you in a second Jeffrey it does affect your
05:01children um they do want to see him more they do want to do more activities with him they want
05:06him
05:06to show up at the end of this week Nick and Vivian will take their oldest child Jeffrey to college
05:10orientation marking the beginning of a new chapter as their kids start to leave the nest
05:15my greatest fear it's my worst nightmare trust me when you get there it is the best no no I
05:20want
05:21them to live in my basement forever so with Jeffrey going to college um it's a it's a bittersweet moment
05:26because after a while Jeffrey's gonna have his own family and be doing his own thing and the kids are
05:30gonna move on I think the fat five could help Nick how to make room for like conversation
05:37prioritize family Vivian's planning a going away party to honor this new chapter and to remind Nick
05:45to slow down because time is moving fast oh yeah let's help DC's devoted tour guide reflect on the
05:54past while showing up for the present yeah let's go tour guide so we're gonna check out Jefferson for a
06:01minute his memorial is off to your right it is made out of marble so don't take it for granted
06:06yeah interesting fact he's actually a tour guide here usually around this time so that's why that's
06:11why you brought us here yes Jerry you're so smart that tour guide be our tour guide I think it's
06:15him
06:15we call him the forgotten founding father but without George Mason we don't have a bill of rights
06:24because he wrote the first what have we learned before you say goodbye can you tell us about this
06:39monument absolutely so first and foremost at the top you have the committee of five John Adams Thomas
06:44Jefferson Benjamin Franklin Roger Sherman from Connecticut and Robert Livingston from New York
06:49that was like their fat five there you go right this was dedicated 1943 April 13th that was the
06:56200th anniversary of his birth 1743 Franklin Roosevelt laid the cornerstone 1939 look at you with all the
07:03facts how does one fit so much information in a brain a lot of reading a lot of research a
07:08lot of
07:08studying now I see why you are the tour God I'm trying okay I was hoping that it was tour
07:13God like G-A-W-D
07:16but it turns out it's just like the tour God but not your God please leave him great reviews five
07:22stars on y'all don't panic we're very friendly should we get the show on the road absolutely
07:28what do we do with them are talking about them like they're not literally behind you
07:36it's funny and we did get a bus for y'all just around the corner it's right there
07:55it's just about right here yes I like your spot we're here our neighborhood is so cute we're home
08:03we made it welcome to my home nice to meet you honey this is like the Brady bunch there's kids
08:19everywhere it was my number one dream to always have five children I still wish I did I asked Nate
08:30probably once a month if he wants to have another child I keep trying but just I can't seem to
08:35get
08:35pregnant I know I've said it too many times that I need to stop objectifying you but you are beautiful
08:39and your candy apple red hair is so stunning I love it thank you so much okay so kids tell
08:45us what
08:46needs to happen what do you what do you wish yeah why are we here break it down I know
08:50some of his
08:51outfits he came out the house looking like a yellow mustard bottle the outfits for sure like I would
09:02love to see him in some nice khakis a nice polo what else to go okay Nina she said some
09:07of his dad jokes
09:08need to change everybody's having a good time everyone's laughing it's a good environment but
09:18I see that Nick is sort of fading away in the background I have a question are we loving the
09:22beard are we obsessed with the beard I like how it is you like how it is I remember one
09:26time he came
09:26home without a beard so the Nick that we just met had all the facts was talking was sharing this
09:37Nick
09:37in his house is not saying anything this isn't the full family right we're missing one yes what
09:43kid what is your home he is okay you're the one leaving quite soon yes are you feeling ready oh
10:05you don't call me sir I'm your age are you barely okay you're going away really soon where are you
10:12going you name college Ferrum College yes are you excited to leave home a little bit tell me why
10:17I'm because I'm going to college for football but you are quarterback or something linebacker good for
10:23you I don't know what that means are you also doing good in the educational component yes I'm doing good
10:28on my educational like my goodness me should we see more of the house yeah let's explore give us a
10:35tour
10:35so this is the living room what's in here what's happening it's books okay we've kept do we need
10:42these books we do not I think we declutter I'm right there with you sock baskets winter clothes and
10:52crafting stuff are you a crafter I am a crafter what kind of crap I do a lot of party
10:57favors I make shirts I'm a
10:59shot glasses I do buttons where's all the craft stuff because I know there's gotta you gotta have
11:05stuff don't judge me okay just wait till you get to the craft room okay we'll work our way over
11:10there
11:10y'all gonna be baffled why okay a mess it is a mess smells nice this is the chaos you
11:23fight fast and
11:24loose with the words crap room this is a dumping ground that just so happens to have creative things
11:30in it it could be a hurricane sometimes what the fuck is that I had a girlfriend that was a
11:39scrapper
11:42scrapbooker is that what turned you gay she had a room similar to this look at me now walking around
11:51Nick's home there's not a lot of room to live in this house right now I want to take all
11:58of the
11:59clutter out so that I can bring the family in you can't do the things you need to fill your
12:03own cup up
12:04in this house actually that's true there's plenty of all right can we see more absolutely let's go
12:16kitchen tell me more what's working what's not working dishwasher doesn't work you don't use it
12:29you know the kids are the dishwasher I want to be on the kids side for one moment because my
12:33mother
12:33father did the same thing we had a dishwasher and they never let us use it please can we
12:37start allowing I think it's brown people for me we do paper plates and paper forks and paper not so
12:47why are there dishes paper plates are for picnics actually I don't even use paper plates on a picnic
12:52paper plates are not the vibe okay you mentioned that this is where the magic happens who's in charge
12:57of the magic who does the cooking here I do okay and then Viviana helps me and I always cook
13:02chicken
13:02too much chicken chicken on Monday chicken on Tuesday chicken on Wednesday so one day I got tired of
13:07chicken she said I'm gonna make something different like what is it she over the oven she said ta-da
13:11I
13:12said what is it she was like it's chicken with bacon wrapped around it I get it no chicken okay
13:25oh
13:30oh my god there's so many books is there anything in this freezer is it plugged in does it work
13:38it might be a
13:39little empty tube oh your favorite chicken breasts and then an even larger bag of drumsticks that I
13:45think is stuck to the inside of the freezer this is the bedroom okay my side of the bed okay
13:56her
13:57side I could have guessed that this was your side yeah right it's a little reminiscent of a different
14:02section of this house yeah there's no way on God's earth that any fun time is happening in this space
14:10Jeremiah they've got a fridge freezer in the bedroom there's no romance in this space there's
14:14nothing romantic about it at all what do you need solvents for in your bedroom we don't okay
14:23it's gross who wants to have sex here when's the last time do you remember like the last time all
14:29of
14:29you sat down at the table together as a family you have a beautiful dining table like I know it's
14:35hard
14:35with their schedules but is it realistic to like once a week or once every two weeks where you guys
14:40could
14:40have like a proper family meal together well I think it's possible but not possible because
14:46like Nick gets off at work at like four and goes back into work then Viviana goes to do like
14:53a late
14:53you guys could do a dinner a nighttime snack I'll keep it like dessert night a dessert night oh yeah
14:58I love dessert night yeah I know we used to have a dessert night where my mom used to make
15:03root beer
15:04floats yeah we used to do a lot but all of it stopped because everybody became busy yeah I think
15:09there's
15:09definitely a lot of love in the family but everyone seems to be living their own lives they want quality
15:14time so I think it's about being a little more mindful and a little more present when you are at
15:20home it's gonna become possible honey it needs to become possible again because he's about to go off
15:24to college that's sweet it's sad but it's also beautiful to have someone to miss right yeah yeah
15:35much bolder than I expected so now that you would wear on an evening out this is the yellow hoodie
15:42I wore she said I was oh and I got these yellow shoes right that gives me so much hope
15:49and she
15:49called me the mustard bottle but oh yeah so that is an outfit you feel good in yeah jeans hoodie
16:00you're a casual streetwear guy then I got regular little t-shirts and things Nick seems excited
16:05about clothes but it's so clear he's still dressing like a 20 year old because he doesn't really know
16:11who he is today he needs to step it up just a little bit it shows you have style you
16:18just choose to
16:19wear a uniform yeah well because he's busy honey I get it I get it but to be fair even
16:25if he's busy
16:25his wife wants to look nice every now and then just like sometimes yeah oh moisturization station
16:36is right here we talked earlier with the kids right we saw that you were quiet do they often
16:44express their feelings nah no nope yeah why we're not really in the same moment on the same page to
16:53do so
16:53what about when you have like one-on-one time with yeah that's what I got to create so you
16:57have time
16:57for that no I'll be so exhausted but you know I got to find the energy to do that stuff
17:02got it got
17:03okay then what was your childhood like my mom worked a lot because she was a single parent you
17:08know so she had two three jobs so dad wasn't there nope and then mom worked all the time right
17:15that
17:15work ethic kind of thing I'm not blaming her because I like to drive but I got that from her
17:22this makes a little more sense to me like your journey to fatherhood because what I know is that
17:28somebody who normally doesn't have models they have to go one of two ways they mimic the models
17:32they have or they try to do the opposite right was that sort of the reason you stepped in but
17:36I
17:36wasn't going to deal with her and not make sure the kids are straight but why so that would mean
17:41I
17:41didn't love her so I love her I mean I gotta love the kids and I didn't always love them
17:44it kind
17:45of grew on me of course so now and I really be like concerned about them and about their well
17:50-being
17:50and things like that Nick is a great stepfather he's clearly trying to give his kids everything
17:55that his father didn't give him oh he still needs some help in really figuring out how to show up
18:00for
18:01them hey hey hey we back so I want to know if you're ready to start this week absolutely you
18:09need to say
18:10goodbye because we're about to get on that tour bus to get out of here I just really love this
18:28family
18:28and I want this house to be a place that when Nick gets done working 14-hour days he can't
18:34wait to get
18:34home because it's gonna fill his cup up in a way that no other place could I need my reinforcements
18:39all right come on let's go in I only want people that are interested in getting rid of stuff oh
18:44okay
18:44all right let's get a box come on you know what y'all boy ready to throw his stuff away
18:52no one uses
18:53what bring it in we're gonna give it back Michelle you're gonna keep this how many Grinch waffles you've
18:59made one and that was like last Christmas we can throw that away she just likes the Grinch I'll be
19:04the design Grinch
19:30it looks like a pork sword a schlong meat stick a penis let's say it three two one
19:35it's phallic it looks like a penis looks like a penis I wish you get your gay brains out of
19:41the
19:41gutter this is just simply a fan JV it I don't know holding it like that is better I am
19:46gonna say this
19:47though girl we're here for Nick and it's about family yeah it is even though he has it put together
19:53on the outside yeah it sort of gave me the sense of like some deeper things well the chaos of
19:57that
19:58the household oh yeah is pretty insane but he's so open he's like give me everything you got yeah
20:04in many ways Nick has been in his own survival mode I just feel like he needs to take a
20:09beat
20:09yeah he's on the Express train he's working in the morning he's got like an hour and a half in
20:13the
20:13afternoon and then he's going back to giving tours yeah Vivian and Nick have been in a process of work
20:18kids work kids Nick needs to really lean in really communicate and really show up for himself and for
20:24his family from what he said he clearly doesn't have any models I really want him to understand
20:28where he was in his past the work that he's done and where he can go yeah but he's ready
20:33for it
20:33he's ready to the tour God to the tour God what did you say to the tour God tour guard
20:40God okay one two
20:45three five six seven eight let's go do a death drop on your fan I have to tell you I'm
20:59really good at so
21:00many things but I'm not good at fades so we got help today oh my god good deal look how
21:04cute he was
21:04there's just a cute soldiers all over this place there's such hot guys in DC they're just like
21:08everywhere your hair is still turning my touch sure my god this hairline is just stunning the
21:19greatest gift that a parent can give their kid is their time and their attention and also modeling
21:24for them better ways to take care of themselves so by Nick slowing down a little bit taking more time
21:30for him to connect with himself he can connect with his kids a lot better you're aging like a fine
21:36wine
21:36honey like a fine French wine we don't have to reinvent the wheel or do anything crazy but I do
21:42think let's take it down at least like that okay and then you know what will be really hot I
21:48do want
21:48to tint your brows I definitely want to yes we're gonna tint them darker because do you see how like
21:55strong your beard is but then your brows are kind of disappearing on me I ain't got no brow my
21:59mom
21:59ain't got yeah but you do have brows you do but and if we tint them it'll like pick them
22:02up stronger
22:03like it'll be pretty it'll be nice it'll be very mask actually a brow tint never hurt nobody unless
22:08you use way too much and get all over their skin and give them super proud and then it has
22:12hurt people
22:12but we won't do that here don't worry about it you know also my esthetician besties here I want to
22:18give you a great facial have you ever had a facial I had one it's been years let's wait a
22:21minute you
22:22just have the prettiest skin I just want to buff it a little bit we're gonna exfoliate those lips a
22:25little bit honey we're just gonna give you a little polish honey okay I'm gonna get our barber and
22:29then we're gonna get started he's so sweet his name is team so we'll do a little low taper I
22:41was
22:42thinking like I kind of like it when it like follows the head shape a little okay so more of
22:46like a drop a yes I think it's a kind of like we're fine okay it's like a little more
22:50like glow you know
22:52what I mean I want to make it really like so fresh and so clean you know not a problem
22:56in a time of
22:59straight men are not encouraged to connect with each other or have like a safe space to talk about
23:03their feelings this barber shop is giving me that it's like when ladies go get a manicure go see your
23:09barber make a friend at the barber shop so cute your hair looks great light is so clean yes go
23:16get your
23:16hair washed you'll feel so much better God everyone looks so good in here absolutely so Nick what would
23:23be your like goals with your touring career well I've always had a vision about this like comedy
23:29adults only tour so little more grown-up language yes little more you know adulty stories yeah do you
23:38have a name it'd be like a hysterical history tour something like that historical history tour like
23:45Hamilton it inspired me when they had that line son of a whore I want to be able to say
23:50whore on the bus
23:51yes but I got to watch my language you know because I got to keep it professional yeah I love
23:56that idea sign me up should we brainstorm some like slutty jokes like the stories about Lincoln being a
24:03raging homosexual they did say that but I don't think that's true honey I love a fact when he was
24:10already established in Springfield he had this one guy who he lived with for like 10 years it's giving
24:151800s b-b-bot honey that's what they say it's true honey he was so stressed out about the war
24:23honey so
24:23he just started I'm so sorry sorry I hope you're enjoying your haircut I'm so sorry I wasn't even
24:32talking to you honey there's this nice gentleman over here trying to get his hair cut and I'm talking
24:35about Lincoln's the hysterical history tour is so cute by him taking more control of his destiny with
24:42his career he could hopefully make more money and then he could have more time to spend with his
24:45kids I do think it's important for you because like you are just on all the time like your job
24:50just so involves you being on and performing these moments of like chilling out and calming down are so
24:57important for you because it really is so true like when you take better care of yourself I feel
25:00like you can show up better with your family this is much needed I appreciate you oh my god it's
25:05my
25:05pleasure honey oh that beard looks great I think it's one of the freshest fades in Queer Eye history best
25:12for last oh that skin is coming alive honey stunning can I just say how annoying it is that men
25:26can put
25:26in like such little effort and look that much better okay Nick are you excited to see the new you
25:32I'm
25:32ready to see the new me honey can I just say I've never seen a hotter tour guide in my
25:37life okay
25:38here's the new in three two one oh yeah I'm back right do you see the difference in your bro
25:45see the
25:46difference I can see him now a little more I'm glowing like I just came home a quick facial and
25:51a little
25:51haircut get this man to the tour guide Emmys he is so cute glowing from the inside hot but regal
25:59at the
25:59same time oh like hot but sir all at once my name Abraham where we Lincoln let me take a
26:20good look at
26:21it first yeah yeah yeah what an improvement oh yeah and I do prefer the shorter beard I do you
26:28know
26:28what here's the thing I don't understand you have a gift you have the gift of style it is such
26:34a blessing
26:35you're choosing not to use it man I mean I just you know I'm working at the company they want
26:41you to
26:41wear the company shirt yeah but I do like to wear my own clothes but but when are you wearing
26:46it there
26:46you go nowhere when did you start caring about clothes when I was younger because we didn't have
26:52clothes heavy downs you know pass the clothes down I really didn't get to the fashion fashion aspect of
26:59it until I got probably about 25 30 okay so I started making enough money to buy nicer clothes okay
27:05would you like to have opportunities to dress differently to you clothes do still excite you
27:12no question about it still gets you going oh yeah okay good Nick doesn't really have time to dress
27:19outside of his uniform but it's something that brings him a lot of happiness it's one thing in
27:26his life that he can truly control so let's step it up just a little bit not just for Vivian
27:32but also for
27:33himself so much of what you had in your closet was street wear and I love that the issue that
27:39I'm
27:39having is that the stuff that is great gets lost because you've got so much shizer in there I totally
27:45agree with you just said there's a lot of that you don't need in our house and so let's get
27:50rid of
27:50that let's give you some newness okay but mix in your newness with the stuff that you already had so
27:55it still feels like you should we give it a go let's get it okay so first things first is
28:01something
28:01actually I found in your closet this I'm kind of obsessed with you've not worn this right just
28:08once tell me how you styled it my work shirt under it okay okay okay um some denim jeans okay
28:14I might
28:15want to see how you can wear this in like regular life too I hope are you against that not
28:21at all you're
28:22fine with people knowing that you're a tour guard they know okay I want to use that I also want
28:28to
28:28find a way to get you in a trouser I want to see what you look like with street wear
28:35mixed in with
28:36something slightly more sophisticated and I think that that's what Vivian was saying yeah I think so
28:52I would love for you to try it and then see how you feel it's a slightly baggier version all
28:57right
28:57cool I might see some pushback when it comes to style from Nick he does seem to really gravitate
29:03towards street wear if he can go as bold as he has in this closet I know that we can
29:10push him so much
29:11further will you join me thank you will you just stand right here and take a look at yourself in
29:17the mirror pants are super comfortable I tell you that much I want to know what you're thinking you've
29:28gone quite quiet um it's different but I mean when you look good you make anything look good
29:39but it was different I was my shades and it would have been I was literally about perfect I'm gonna
29:44give you two things you say right that don't yeah I don't know how tight or how bend you want
29:49that but
29:50just will you pop that on how about we do it that way first and then I'll try to front
29:56yeah I like that
29:58look actually with the hat I think he's trying not to give in to me and let it be known
30:05that he is
30:06feeling this look because it is quite different from what he typically wears you've got a smirk on
30:15your face you know you look wicked that's a smile as he continues to look in the mirror his smiles
30:21getting bigger and bigger and he can't hide it riding in the coop I could wear this out of work
30:27for sure all right the next one might be slightly more of a push we'll see I kind of love
30:35that he's
30:35open to try anything yeah that was good having somebody that had baseline good style that just
30:41wants to experiment that's so joyful for me all right Nick you ready all right oh it looks nice okay
30:54you tell me what's the element that is a little bit off for you the bulkier loafer if it was
31:04kind
31:04of a little smaller loafer maybe okay yeah okay let me try the magic glasses I'm gonna whip out a
31:14bikini
31:15soon I'm just like okay that here's your glasses the glasses really makes it better no I like it
31:19it's cool when you add accessories or any component to a look it just adds another point of interest
31:26is this something you wear a hat with I'm thinking the brown hat with the brown sleeve or the or
31:30even
31:31the blue go ahead if we want to add shades if we want to add a hat it makes it
31:35more and more clear
31:35that you've really considered your luck do you think that this could be a version of you going
31:41forward for sure yeah I feel swaggy I feel good you look fantastic this final look is a perfect balance
31:51of who he was before we came here and who he could be going forward I know that this is
31:57the most
31:57styly like fashionable version yeah but I think you can go there it works I think that he's gonna really
32:04start to change his entire wardrobe even without me I think that he's one of those rare cases where
32:10we planted the seed and he's gonna water the shit out of it it's swaggy thanks mate I appreciate it
32:49after you guys all right okay Jeffrey's heading off to college he's not going to be around as much I
32:55want
32:55them to have a beautiful graduation dinner and hopefully start a ritual of making a meal together
33:00hey how's it going Anthony good to see you thank you so much for having us very good how are
33:06you
33:06all right well tell you what let me take you all into the kitchen and introduce you all to Chef
33:10Sonny
33:10okay thank you Chef Sonny I want to take a minute and introduce you to these gentlemen my name is
33:15Chef
33:15Sonny hi quarters thank you so so much for letting us use your kitchen we really appreciate it thank you
33:22chef thank you all right so I was trying to figure out what to make that wasn't chicken because I
33:28feel
33:28like four out of five of the kids are like so over chicken at this point I wanted to have
33:32a tradition
33:32that was nice and simple very big in pop culture right now smash burgers are having a little moment
33:38when all else fails make a burger and since I love crispy edges let's make a smash burger and the
33:44purpose of
33:45a smash burger is that it's really nice and thin and what we really want to get is those crispy
33:49edges
33:50I'm using the fattier cut of beef than usual so this is an 80 20 blend so it's 80%
33:55meat 20% fat
33:56it's gonna create that nice little crust on the outside you got some pepper you can crack a little
34:00bit of pepper as much as you want amazing and then you each have a bit of salt yes chef
34:05chef Jeff huh
34:06chef Jeff man you know that's my name right there I just made that up that's been my name if
34:13you give
34:14your kids positive memories they're gonna be excited to come back and visit having Nick prepare
34:19something for his family having his kids partake in helping him with that as well just such a
34:23beautiful thing roll it up very loosely in your hands so you don't want it to be too too compact
34:30wow not that it's a competition but like oh it's a competition his are pretty good he could beat me
34:37and John Madden but he can't beat me in the kitchen there's a difference see how you slice your tomatoes
34:42I love that you're figuring out how you want to cut it no he's waiting till I finish so he
34:45can peek
34:45over here I recommend thinner slices yeah I know I kind of did it too chunky that's okay my intention
34:52here is just to have them cook together but very quickly they're trying to figure out who's gonna make
34:56the better burger man cooking together all right yep so these are your presses right put the meatball
35:06on yep put the paper on and then press it down the thinner the better it's about a minute and
35:12a half on
35:13each side and then you can go ahead and grab your cheese and then you can grab your second one
35:17are ready
35:17to continue it smells like fast food in the best way you think this is something you can make for
35:23four
35:24kids maybe five whenever the fifth one's visiting from college absolutely having something like
35:29this that's kind of like it's rituals right it's creating memories for them I think it's important
35:34for them to be able to see that as kids okay finish line and we assemble all right you use
35:47all my
35:47tomatoes they're about our tomatoes Sharon is caring Jeffrey you got some thick tomatoes I'm gonna go
35:54ahead and cut this one these are beautiful though the buns are perfectly toasted the cheese is melty I
36:00see crispy edges hey chef Jeffrey asks Sonny the executive chef at $17.99 to come in and start like
36:08taste testing tell us what you think about it oh he wants to know if there's a winner this is
36:13turning
36:13into like a full-on competition you're the judge chef you know what whatever gets them excited to make
36:21this dish again I'm here for it and did you try his one right now yeah moment of truth
36:33it's more crisp I had more tomato in here there's more balance than this burger you think that burger's
36:38more balanced because he took Nick's tomato that was cut thicker and he was upset about it but that ended
36:44up working in your favor yeah right yeah there might be a winner but you're gonna have plenty
36:49of time to master your smash burger while he's away at college so when he comes back you can really
36:53show
36:53absolutely yeah I'm gonna work on that yeah you guys crushed it all right thank you amazing thank you
36:57chef this is a great experience all right y'all want to follow me I got something planned for you
37:14it was a little competitive yeah they got through it so you and I are gonna head out now enjoy
37:19your
37:19burgers all right Nick and Vivian move through the world with such grace and poise and charisma the
37:38house should reflect that I want you to walk into this house and feel like you can engage with the
37:43family and laugh and have fun and tell jokes I want to open up that kitchen so that when Vivian
37:48or
37:48Nick are in there cooking they can be talking and laughing with the kids and I want to add a
37:53level of
37:53sophistication that I think they deserve is this true you've never been to an Ikea before no it's my
38:11Ikea has changed so much they even have fridges now we should get you one for your dorm if it
38:18fits
38:19I'm helping Jer pick out some pieces for the new kitchen and I recognize that we're helping Nick but
38:24this week is a family affair and what a crazy coincidence that we bumped into JVN I mean what
38:29are the odds of that happening I wanted to come surprise you guys Jeffrey is going to college and
38:35he needs to get his stuff for his dorm room together so I'm here to hook him up so we're
38:38shopping for
38:39your college stuff we have to get him everything he needs this is ready for college what's speaking
38:47to you this is giving butch don't you need some cookie cutters I've actually really wanted an apron
38:54okay let's get you an apron and he needs a strainer a colander yes I do need alarm clock every
39:00door
39:01needs one of these watch the cinnamon rolls oh I like the license plate well I'm glad that we're
39:13finally having this moment together it's absolutely because you know for me like we kind of already
39:17started our conversation our lesson before we left the house exactly because I I realize you want to
39:23learn how to show up more yeah memories are everything and if you're not creating them you
39:27don't have them yeah working a lot don't have time to go to every game so I'm just trying to
39:33be more
39:34available I walk into your house those kids are smiling they laughing they joking what's going off
39:41to college yeah you know you did a great job it was all Vivian for real she made sure that
39:46boy went
39:47everywhere he needed to go and I was just there making sure that anything she couldn't provide
39:52she knows she had my help but um so what you're doing right now is you downplaying me I mean
39:59that's
40:00that's the reality though like that's not the reality and you can't downplay yourself
40:09Vivian is a great mother obviously but you can say point-blank equally I was a great father to me
40:16what you don't have to say she did more she showed up all I did was this you don't have
40:23to
40:23listen what you did uh something I gotta work on I guess I mean I get credit where credit's due
40:30I just
40:30don't give myself the credit I deserve so I gotta figure it out being able to relate to Nick as
40:36a
40:37black man who's also a father who also has had abandonment issues myself I understand what Nick
40:42is going through by raising kids that aren't biologically his it's what I dealt with and I
40:46want him to know that he can overcome this my youngest son that's a doctor came into my life
40:51at seven years old and I'm not his biological father but to this day I'm dad all right I was
40:58sitting there down playing like am I doing enough am I all right because I didn't have the best
41:01relationship with my father so so how did you counter those thoughts of are you doing enough
41:07one day I had to wake up and say to myself no no no no no no you did it
41:13because the same way the
41:16people the model that you didn't have had a choice not to be there you made an opposite choice
41:24you made an opposite choice every single day for your own child and for children that weren't
41:30biologically yours you are smart the fact that you provide and never give up the fact that you are
41:35funny and witty and kind the things I'm sharing is the reason that I love you already appreciate that
41:42a lot of times people think that like when it comes to fatherhood especially that you have to like
41:46it's like these big grand things I don't remember all the big things like I played games and yeah
41:52my father didn't show up to my football games but what I do remember is the orange slices my mother
41:56used
41:56to cut up and I don't know why that memory sticks out in my head but when she used to
42:00have orange slices
42:00in a bag coming off the field that was impactful to me yeah you know as much as we would
42:06love to say
42:07we're going to sit down every night and have game night and do these things it's just not the
42:11reality when I got to get to this job and this job yeah sometimes it's as simple as one little
42:15bag
42:16of oranges or something I like that because it is those small moments like when you say you know
42:22what I'm gonna have this bowl of cereal with you it's saying I'm gonna tell you why I love you
42:27yeah
42:28I'm gonna tell you why I appreciate you let's create the time boom that's it and no longer will
42:33you feel like you're not present that's real some that's real talk right there did he solve all of
42:52your life problems it seems that way great time shall tell I invited Tani and Jer here because I
42:59wanted Nick to hear from other dads that were all going through the same things it's hard to be a
43:04parent it's not even hard to be a stepparent and I think it's a conversation that a lot of dads
43:10don't
43:11have with each other and it's really nice you know to sit with other men who are raising their
43:16children and care which is who Nick is you're such a strong foundation for that family and I think it's
43:22important you know that I just really can't wait to get around the kids in the family and be a
43:27better
43:33father yeah is this the most nervous you've been yes it is oh yeah I really wanted Nick and Vivian
43:51to
43:51walk through this house first and alone because it's important for them to understand that they're
43:56the foundation of this family I won't make you wait any longer okay I'm excited oh my goodness
44:21whose house is this oh man this is great this is not our house this is our home that's why
44:42it was a house
44:43his home look at the fireplace some screen from the 80s yeah the fireplace it looks beautiful too it's
44:51amazing yeah oh thanks Jeremiah it's a lot to take in this is amazing oh the breakfast bar is gone
45:03more space
45:07nice this is not real look at the cabinet organized within all that I gave them a whole new kitchen
45:17with plaster walls by the way with a stainless steel backsplash which is I like to say kid proof easy
45:24to
45:24clean we have a new sink we have a new stove what do you think I'm gonna do all new
45:30appliances a dishwasher
45:32that works for the record yes because I ran it today but those kids are the dishwasher well I can
45:38only go so far dishes no more plastic yes I'm trying not to cry oh you're supposed to cry cry
45:46for me
45:46because I'm trying not to cry appreciate you man I'm so happy to do it for you guys honestly the
45:54house
45:54it's meant to be a place to come together to dine to talk to have conversations this house now is
46:01built around the moments that this family needs from it last time we were in this craft room I tortured
46:07you
46:08so come check it out oh my god oh my goodness look at all this space look at all the
46:21organization that

46:43live in this room
46:44now do you guys want to see your bedroom that's what I'm excited about okay all right no way oh
46:52oh wow wow what yeah this is not a hotel room it's so spacious it felt so tight when we
47:02could not
47:02move we shrunk the room with all our stuff got a king-size bed in here this is crazy we
47:10have to
47:10keep it this way serious business look at this lamp yeah that's dope that's the first thing I know it's
47:18right yes super cool I can't wait to try out the bed oh well on that note I'm gonna go

51:15keep talking like Aunt Pat I love that Nick is understanding the difference between providing
51:21and being present in their lives the bond between parents and children is not just about these big
51:26moments or presents it's about the little moments those moments that you find that you say I love
51:31you hi mom what do you want that's not the spirit we just finished Nick's house but family made me
51:44miss my family

53:12out
53:12here celebrating Jeffrey on off the college and it's the great kid that fat five both this family closer
53:20together they gave me the best advice be myself don't be ashamed of expressing myself and most
53:28importantly understand that I'm I'm enough I love y'all appreciate y'all let's eat some ice cream
53:38there is no playbook for parenthood clearly but if you just show up and keep trying you're gonna do
53:43all right all right hi Mooshu I miss you hello hello my angel how are you tell my kids very
53:54well I think one of
53:55them's awake now thank you for all the sacrifices you've made and all the things you did thank you
54:01baby you're welcome that fat five helped me take care of my fat five my five kids so this is
54:07a blessing
54:14when we started a lot of people were experiencing fear and we're ending this journey with a lot of
54:23similar feelings I think a big epidemic in this country is this notion that we are alone in our
54:30experiences you might have different struggles but we're all suffering that's what's so beautiful
54:37about this show because whether we're in Atlanta or Philly or Washington DC or Kansas or Tokyo at the
54:46end of the day when you walk through someone's door it's about them it's about their unique individual
54:50experiences and in some ways I feel like we've done so little like there's so many more stories to tell
55:00anything can change if a person experiences real love and it's pretty incredible to think that I was
55:07part of this thing that brought hope to people or made them feel less lonely or inspired them to do
55:14better
55:20it's so cool
55:32you
